Hello everyone, hope you’re all well and have had a good month so far!! Apologies for the lack of uploads recently! (no I haven’t given up with RU-vid or given up the allotment plot lol!) I’ve been so busy with work & my business lately I haven’t had the time to edit & upload anything! 🥲 Short video for you today, but promise we’ll have a proper catch up in the next one! (I actually filmed this one on October 2nd, a lot has changed since then 🫣). Longer video & October tour coming up on Monday 👀 Hope you have a good weekend! See you next week! 🥰💖✨

Seren if there's someone nearby that is raising chickens, those carrots will be a good addition to the chicken feed. Some people make a pesto out of the carrot leaves. Haven't tried it myself but some people love it. The parsnip leaves, dried, are good for making veggie stock or flavouring soups. I have made green tomato relishes, some with hot peppers added. That manure looks quite "green" so I suggest you put it somewhere to decompose more before adding it to the beds. First thing is to plant a few bean seeds in it to test for "Grazon" which is an herbicide that ruins veg plants. You can tell by the leaves that curl up very tightly.

Next season bury the carrot seeds with radishes and chives. The chives help keep away the carrot root fly and the radish is in and out in 4 weeks giving the carrots a hole to grow in to. Great work on your plot too. From NZ.

Hello! I've always found with tomatoes that they need to have a little bit of 'blush' on them before taking them from the vine in order for them to ripen at home. I don't think I've ever seen a totally green tomato ripen after being picked! I've loved seeing your journey with the allotment so far and I've just gotten my own (very overgrown) allotment :) xx

I have had success just hanging the tomato vines in the greenhouse when I removed the plants. For next year I have bought some Longkeeper variety, will be interesting

I just saw a video where they turned an old compost bin in to a raised bed for carrots. They dug a hole, put the narrow end of the bin in the ground so that only a couple of feet were above ground and filled it up. They said carrot flies cannot fly higher than 18 inches so having such a tall bed for them could help prevent. Dunno if you still have all those old bins, but I wanted to share 😊

Hello Seren, are your potatoes 'Pink Fir Apple' variety ? Small, but the flavour will be worth it. Cover your carrot planter next year with the really fine insect exclusion mesh that looks like net curtains, can be bought on Amazon etc, and that will keep the adult flies out. Real shame as you had a huge harvest of carrots for your container. Happy gardening and enjoy your dahlias until the first frost. Best regards, david

Seren, I wouldn't have eaten the carrots either. It's okay to compost what you don't want. Yes carrot root fly can overwinter in the soil. Also, my research told me it actually is not recommended, particularly if you are in a group of people with impaired immunity, to eat veg that has been nibbled by rodents, in your case because you don't know exactly what nibbled it. You rationale is completely valid. Dahlias should continue to bloom until the tops freeze if you have enough daylight hours. They are lovely paired with the snapdragons.

I have some friends who take green tomatoes, remap them in newspaper and store them for a month or so and they ripen in time for Thanksgiving (in the U.S.). They do say however that they don’t taste the same as a freshly picked tomato from the garden, they are more like tomatoes from the grocery store.

Fried Green Tomatoes have a similar texture to fried eggplant. I was not a major fan of them due to my dislike of tomatoes, but I was pleasantly surprised. Considering they are both nightshades.

I wouldn't eat those wormy, aphid infested carrots either. You could use the compost from that container on the garden somewhere, but definitely not for carrots. Since you don't have a compost hot enough to kill the carrot fly lavae, I would take them off the allotment and put them in the rubbish. Ah, the things we gardeners are faced with! Anyway, great to see another video of you in your plot ❤

I think the stuff that was growing with the carrots that looked like parsnips may have been leaf celery(?) not sure what it's called in English but it's a variety of celery that makes mostly foliage and not the big stalks, it's used for garnishing soups and stuff. Not absolutely sure but it kind of looks like it and in my garden it grows like a weed and I have no idea where it comes from

Small container = smaller potatoes. But that's a good harvest I think. Pink Fir Apple are a great potato (assuming that's what they are) - main crop but eats like a new potato. Apparently they store well too without sprouting so you can save a few for next year. I think a 30 litre container or bigger is best if you are going to grow potatoes in containers. For me my pink fir apple were easily the best of my potato harvest this year.

I ripened my tomatoes in a large paper bag with a banana in it too. Must’ve been 100 tomatoes and only 3 or 4 rotted.

I'm from the southern United States where fried green tomatoes are really popular, and they hace ZERO appeal to me too. Also, when storing tomatoes that aren't ripe, a few things: Make sure they aren't in a warm or humid spot. (It's not as much of an issue for tomatoes that have started to color up to be warm, but you don't want that for green ones.) There needs to be good airflow, like with anything else you don't want to rot. Also, if you can, store them in the stem end. Tomatoes ripen from the blossom end going up, so that end will get soft sooner than the rest. Be careful not to drop or squeeze them as the bruising will cause them to rot.
