I just binged your videos from allotment beginning to now and I have to tell you how much I admire your work ethic. Such an amazing accomplishment! And yeah, get yourself a place to sit down and admire your garden.
You can put weeds into a plastic container add water and weight it down to make liquid plant food. This is a good way to use weeds because it returns the nutrients of the weeds back to the ground, or plants that you want. Keep in mind you need to delute the resulting slurry in water as it is very concentrated.
What about sweetcorn and beans in the potato bed? They’re supposed to grow well together with the squash that you’re putting in there already. 3 sisters planting🙂
The slugs snapped two of my sunflowers and Ieft them too. Now I have new shoots growing out of leaf nodes. My first sweet pea flower today. Yours are amazing.
Love your vids as always ❤️ I have a cocker spaniel puppy and when I put your videos on she sits quietly staring at tv hehe. Thanks for sharing your progress with us, you're amazing ❤
I think weeding the paths are going to be a weekly ritual. Homemade compost will always have weed seeds in (I think that why it recommended to use during the winter)
Your plot is really lovely 😍 I got a plot last year and spend hours a week weeding. It was filled with comfrey and other weeds to keep up with. It took too much time so this year I got a battery driven grass trimmer and it was definitely the best investment I made on my plot! It takes just minutes a week now to cut everything down 🤩 It takes all the comfrey and weeds to!
Nettles have so many uses make tea/wine use for fertilizer I use to control slugs and steam use in food tastes like spinach you can make a anti pain balm as always happy gardening Richardx
For the weed seeds in your compost, you could try to have them germinate and spout in a bucket, then pull them when they are tiny, and bag up the "clean" soil so you can use it later. Would that work ? ps : love your videos and what you have done with the plot
Definitely something to think about next time!! And for when I’m making my own compost 😊 those little weeds have been a right pain! Thank you so much for watching 🥰💖🌸
Seren, dont waste the onion stems/leaves if your pulling them fresh, used the bulb but shred all the green stems and freeze in a bag, come winter they are a great add into fried rice or stir frys , saves buying spring onions, this principle also applies to shallots and garlic
You could pop some more leeks in after your potatoes if you can stomach more. Plot is looking fab Seren, what a difference to when you first took it on! Yay for the parsnips, I didn't even have 1 from my multiple sowings 🤣
I had a lot of trouble with parsnips. First time growing and I did ground sowings in two places from chitted seeds and none of them grew. The only ones that grew were 4 I planted in a container. So at least I'll get something. I agree, might be worth leaving that sunflower. The top of one of my sunflowers got completely eaten by slugs but the side shoots have grown back really well.
You can use newspapers with a bit of soil on top until you get wood chips, with the beds you can cut comfreys leaves to cover and feed the ground … if the sun don’t get to the soil it want grow and you fed the worms👩🌾🐞🐝
Well done , the potatoes and onions look wonderful. Hope you enjoyed them. In fact, the whole plot has come on brilliantly. You could always call the bottom the wildlife area until you get some time to attack it. Look forward to the next video. Thank you for sharing 😊
All but two of my Brussel sprouts have had that grey bug on them too, idk what it is 😢. They were on a sorrel too but don't seem to have spread, whatever they are.
Oh no that’s a shame 🥲 they really creep me out! 😅 I know you can brush them off or hose them off… but I’m too much of a wimp to do that 🤢 I think they are some kind of aphid 😶 Thanks so much for watching! 💖
There’s still time to throw some herb seeds into spaces in your beds. Basil and parsley will grow relatively quickly. Maybe even cilantro/coriander in more shaded spots.
Thanks Seren, a lovely update, it is amazing how quickly things grow once they get the right conditions/weather it's just a shame the weeds do too ! I know you have the pots with the reservoir, but how did the tomatoes manage in the greenhouse if you were away over a week, did anyone water for you ? Btw, it's a good job you like Pink, it looks like you may have caught the sun ! 🦩 😉
You could leave the green matter as mulch in the pathways as long as nothing will reroot, has gone to seed or is a pernicious weed (although I know you have a problem with bindweed and mare's tale). If you don't cover the soil with something, Mother Nature will do it for you! I envy your sweetpeas but may have to live vicariously through you as mine aren't growing in our cool weather! 😃 You might want to check our Danny's YT channel at GrowUp as he recently found a connection for his greenhouse guttering to go to the water catchment system. Charles Dowding has grown potatoes in the same spot for a decade with no issues and says crop rotation is not necessary. You have made such an amazing transformation to your plot! Congratulations!
Seren please put suncream on. Your back looks a bit burnt. Amazing plot. You have achieved so much. When you tackle the overgrown area you can pop in another bed or 2?
Tomatoes need consistent moisture, so far yours are ok. Paprik peppers are grown by very few people, so you're the exception. I found that pop bottles filled with water, quickly turned upside down and pushed into potted plants keeps the moisture in. There are bottles with pointed spouts you may have available, they're the commercial version, but regulate water a bit better. Comfrey, one of the most versatile plants for gardens.
Hello again Seren ☺. What about grassing the paths and getting a small narrow lawn mower? Thatvwaybyou coukd mower the weeds too 🤔. I think you can seed in September but you'd have to check. If you check out Emma's allotment plot - at plot lot 37 (I think) - their paths are grass. Don't despair it's early days for you ... Sending love & light 🦋🌻🐞🌹 xx
You’re thinking of Jessie at Plot 37. They mow & strim regularly, but Seren needs a lockable shed for such tools. Bare ground looks very nice, especially scraped flat of all weeds, which can be composted after a day of shriveling on an area of sun baked bricks or stones.
Seren, I have a long gravel drive, and an area of gravel at the back. I have used white vinegar, with water, in the ratio of one to four, with a bit of washing up liquid for my weeds. It has killed them. I do not have a sprayer, but used a watering can which my husband used for weed killer. Might that save you weeding your paths? Your allotment is marvellous, well done. I have a small bin, like a kitchen bin at one end of my grrenhouse. It is oblong and catches the water from the greenhouse.
Isn't vinegar bad for regular plants and animals living in the soil? I personally wouldn't do it close to areas where you want to keep the soil healthy...
All looks fabulous! You will have time to sit and enjoy...don't worry. I have a hammock on mine. I'm 62 and arthritic, it's a right laugh getting in and out of that!😂 I have grass paths and a grassy orchard area. It looks lovely, but it's hard work. Wood chip would be easier! 😊
Your heavy basket WAS impressive, you did indeed make your harvest look pretty! Such nice specimens. Your tomatoes may be squeezed for food & water in their pots, a tray underneath would help conserve. Finally, I will like red blossoms for us both lol All my dahlias & nasturtiums are red, so sexy next to anything purple haha
Great plot tour Seren 🎉 Id be careful about bringing the chilli's and peppers from home ..You need airflow round plants and overcrowding will set them back 🙂
Love watching the garden evolve. Those sweet peas are gorgeous. Maybe time to consider a microphone thingy cos the alotment is more often than not so windy. If possible ❤❤
I'd net your carrots to protect from carrot root fly i know they say they can't fly that high but they get blown in the wind and they will get that high, Lucky you 3 more parsnip's than me 😂 i've sown 3 lots now and now resigned myself to the fact i'm not going to get any never had a problem before 🙄
Home made compost always has viable weed seeds in it because the heaps don't get hot enough to kill them. The only thing you can do is not put plants that have seeded on the heap. Personally I just regard the weeds as more material for making compost!
Was watching another youtuber with an allotment, he recommended sprinklng a circle of crushed dried chilli around your plants to keep slugs and snails from eating your plants.
Cover the back of the plot with thick black plastic sheet that will kill back every thing over a few months giving you time to concentrate on the plot great work
Do you really think you will get any pumpkins outside? The weather never mind what the climate lunatics are telling us is not any warmer it is colder the last few years. I have a terrible time moving my plants inside at night in july(!) to keep them growing even though the climate is " burning up". The fall will come this year as well and things will stop growing. I can bring in tomatoes but not much else. I love your updates and want more because you and the plot is wonderful but can you also show some tempature with your updates, I grow outdoors in containers with a kitchen to bring them indoors when it gets cold.Havent your night temp also been every night 12 ?
