An afternoon flight at Algodonales, reaching another personal record - with a question for the pros

The was the second flight on my second day at Algodonales and taking of from the western take off (I cannot remember the name of it!).
I got to 1800m AGL (1000 ish meters above the ground, depending on the ground).
I am still struggling with my nerves when I get high. I feel it especially when the glider pitches and turns in turbulance while I am thermalling.
I am getting used to the height and movements of my glider, but it is still pretty scary for me at times.
I think I am flying too far back in the thermal, in the turbulance at the back of the thermal. The question is, do you extend your into wind leg on purpose, or is there another technique you use to stay in the front portion of a thermal when you are thermalling on a windy day?
As allways, thanks for watching and see you again soon.

Just come back from Algodonales its a great place to fly, very turbulent though but you can get good heights to escape most of it. My last trip challenge was to maintain lots of height above terrain avoiding all that washy air. There is a lot of channels where the air flow is disturbed and there can be a lot of sink to. Its a challenging place to fly or it can be very easy where it gives a false sense of security. I love to get as high as possible into the upper airstream and just sit there looking out at the landscape. Enjoying your videos cheers

I loved flying algo.. I'll admit to being a little scared of the height!! 1800m is really high. I feel like I should be more used to this height now

Its a great place 4 times there, its not for the faint hearted I don't think so. 2135m this time people were a lot higher. I got wacked a few times on the way up from levante. Its an interesting climb out from launch especially the house thermal on the corner and wind is south west a bit. If you were not scared you would not be enjoying it, each time gets better and the fear is less, So they Say lol. I have some vids of Algo and more up soon on my channel if you get a chance to check them out. cheers

Hi Jacques, I think that you're doing fine, getting used to height when thermalling can be daunting if you've done mostly ridge-soaring flights, or (like me) you're moderately afraid of heights. I find that to deal with the height issue, don't look down (sounds obvious, but when I get nervous it's the first thing I do..) I then remind myself to look at the horizon, or the wing, and focus on the task, i.e finding the best lift. If I keep bashing through lift and falling out of it repeatedly, thinking it's a really small tight thermal, I wait for the moment that I start to climb again, wait a second or two, then change the direction, and it usually works - I then know that I was turning on the edge of the thermal, falling out the side or back of it repeatedly. Also if you're falling out the back of it, it will feel very turbulent, so when you find it again, push into wind longer than you think, wait for the vario to slow down - falling out the front is not as rough, and you can turn downwind and chase a thermal that you've lost, if you've mentally mapped out where it was. Not a pro, but have figured a few things out for myself.

Great video. I'm waiting to learn thermalling but im exactly the same with height. Ever swear word possible. I do hope one day this will be overcome. When I flew from Ouideniz I was like WTF I'm I doing up here. So the thought of thermalling to gain the height (s*#! ) - Keep up the videos. 👍 Happy Flying

I like this idea. If things are getting turbulent, I'll fly into wind a little and see if I can find the front of the thermal. This will be my next learning point... When I finally get in the air again

I'm always thinking about falling out the back so tend to skirt the windward side. Not because of the turbulence, but because it's harder and slower to find the thermal again, and if lots of sink you may never get back to it again as you're sinking behind it. This is in stronger wind of course. Not a pro yet, but have done some high flying in the rocky mountains 2500m-3000m is commonplace.

Yeah.. The more I think about it the more I reckon I was stuck in the back of the thermal. I think I'll lengthen my up wind leg a bit more often on windy days and possibly search for the front of the thermal. I haven't plummeted after flying out the back of the thermal yet... At least I don't think I have

Would have been a good start to head off on an Xc to the mountain out ahead of west take off.

You know, I only realised that Algodonales you town was downwind when I looked at the video recently. Next lesson is to look at a map before I take off 😅😅

Sorry for the late reply... I'm still working out how to find unanswered comments... I went to Algodonales in October and flew with a company called paragliding guide.
