An Amazing Day Fly Fishing Poppers on the St Croix River

Today I take you down a section of the upper St Croix River while fly fishing poppers for big smallmouth bass. Once in a while, all the stars align and you end up with 'one' of 'those' days; this video was just such a day! First the wind was blowing downstream, which never happens, but made for an easy day just drifting along. Second the fish were hungry and looking up for food … which meant the popper fishing was out of this world. I will also introduce you to a fly I have been using and recently learned to tie … the results were impressive. Please hit the like button and if you haven't yet subscribed please do so as well.

What a great day on the water, kinda warm here in Missouri lately,but can't wait to try the pucker lip popper. GOD bless you Jeff and your family. Looks easy to tie once you have a shape for head.

Once again another great video Jeff! NICE MUSKY! One thing I do with eyes on my flies., I superglue em, let dry, then cover with a UV resin and zap it. Works best if the foam head already has indents to accept the eyes. Not sure how all that important eyes on a fly really are. On a streamer more so than a popper as a popper eye's would be above the water anyway. "Georgia Sheriff" made me laugh😂 When you were talking about your friend this came to mind: James 1:19-20 "So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God." Jason, What a great verse....will keep it close at hand for sure. You did hit the nail on the head with Tim and he is indeed much like my father was....slow to anger, etc.....I am NOT wired that way. As for the eyes....yes, your method is how I have and will continue to attach them....but tried this first fly without super glue and knew immediately that it was not good. I have yet another video that will be out in the next week or so...and it was also a crazy and hectic day, in a good way....catching big smallies on topwater. I have designed my own frog/pucker lip fly that did the job on our own lake just two nights ago....thanks for the comment.... jeff

Jeff, in your experience on the St. Croix, when(period of time) have you noted smallmouth migration occuring? Many years ago i stumbled on an article where biologists out in NY state conducted a 25 year study of this, albeit on a lake. The results fairly quickly became predictable. As the noted time of migration typically occured within the 10 day period following the Autumnal Equinox. Curious as to what you may have observed in all your years on the St. Croix. Thanks
