An American .357: Ruger SP101 4"

You’ll never wear it out. With the solid time-proven construction Ruger is famous for, this 4 inch Ruger SP101 #5771 is a lifetime gun. POUs could include practice revolver for your other 5 shot wheel guns, home defender, recreation, or ranch gun. For instance in the SouthWest, loaded with CCI birdshot the Ruger SP101 5771 would be great for snakes. It features perfect sights, good grips, solid triple lockup, excellent accuracy, a fully lugged barrel, and a good trigger. Shooting this Ruger is fun; this is one of the guns we wish we could test forever. The 4 inch barrel will provide more velocity and a longer sight radius. Value is better than the Smith and Wesson alternatives and it seems the quality on this latest SP101 (originally reviewed here in 2009!) has improved. The SP101 8 shot .22 provides excellent competition against the HOF S&W 617 .22 revolver as well Slight downsides would include the ugly grips (others available) which will rub on your speed loader. But overall the SP101 in every form is an HOF revolver, recommended without hesitation.

Totally reliable, accurate, ergonomic, and fun to shoot, the Ruger SP101 4 inch barrel called my name in the gun store. Thanks to Gunnies for the loaner. Because we are again reminded why this series is one of the greatest revolvers made in America. Any owner of it has my respect. -nutnfancy

I hike Oregon all seasons, mostly the Cascades. I wanted a pack gun that wasn't to big and it had to be at least .357, with a barrel long enough to keep the velocity of the .357 but wasn't so long that it sucked to carry. It also had to handle harsh weather and be tough enough that I could trust it to work even in case some unintentional abuse. The 4" SP 101 was made to order and I have loved it ever since. In my opinion this is the ultimate backpacking gun. I will say that the grips that come with are not the best definatly if you get one be prepared to get something a little better.

You'll find a lot of people griping about the SP101's trigger as difficult and/or gritty. It tends to be, out of the box...but I found no need to replace springs or have a trigger job done. All you have to do is dry fire it at least 1500 times to seat the springs and wear down any microscopic high spots. People handling my SP101 have consistently marveled at the smooth DA trigger and the breaking-glass, zero creep SA trigger...all from a bit of dry firing that the manual specifically recommends. BTW, I'm rather profoundly disabled and have the use of only my right NON dominant hand, yet I can comfortably shoot 158gr full house .357 Magnum loads all day with acceptable accuracy in my 2.25" variant. Now I DID replace the standard grips with a Hogue Monogrip, but since I'm in a power wheelchair and carry in a shoulder bag, concealability isn't a problem, and I can access it as fast as any healthy person wearing a holster. I can even do a quick one hand eject-and-clear, reloading with my preferred Safariland speedloaders. Ruger's SP101 is simply a wonderful weapon, and augmented with a speedloader or two can provide all the capacity needed in a CCW sidearm.

I have retired now from behind the counter....managed the biggest gun shop in Tucson....and I swear by my Ruger GP100 and my SP101. When I carry the hand cannon GP100 it's in a shoulder rig...the SP101 snub, spurless, DA only, on my belt, open or concealed, with full loads 357 mag. Here in Arizona, we have some brutal conditions that vex so many firearms, but these two revolvers have not and will not let me down.

I carry my 4.2" sp101 357 every day in a triple k holster and 2 speed loaders. The shorter grip makes it easy. I'm a bigger guy though so the weight doesn't bother me. I shoot/practice with it often. No complaints at all.

Still loving my SP101 3 inch 357 after all these years. I think it is the perfect size. You just cant beat it. I do not carry it as much as my LCR 38+P, but the SP101 is SO much more nice to shoot. It handles 357 like a champ for its size.

CT Smith yeah it's a beautiful gun blued. I like the bronze color on Doodles snubby but for a real gun like the 4" GP 100 I'm thinking a flat black duracoat to match my Hogue grip. Don't know . like I said the blued version is sick and it will be a tuff decision to shoot a flat finish over it. if it doesn't work I'll just get it re blued.

Retired LEO in NC. Love revolvers!!! However we see usually 4 perps involved in crimes here. Even officers who practice several times a year hit 20 - 30 % of the time, that translates to an empty gun and several bad guys still on their feet. I am sticking with my Glock 9mm and 40s. More rounds to fight with. I miss the days when I felt safe with my old wheel guns. As a nostalgic guy I hate giving up wheel guns. Still carry some if I am in a "safe" environment. The way crime is progressing here who knows how much longer that will last. Hoping to move to Idaho in the next 18 months and leave most of these problems behind

My daily carry is the SP101 Model 570. Its the spurless hammer model and is double-action only. I carry it in a DeSantis 127 N3 in the waistband holster. The holster was made of the Smith J Frame but the Ruger fits in it perfectly. I usually carry 3 Saffariland J-C7 speedloaders giving me a total of 20 rounds. Again, these were made for the Smith J Frame but work well with the Ruger. My carry load is the Hornady American Gunner .357 Mag 125 Grain, XTP. The gun is a pleasure to shot even with these loads. I own a Glock 19 but prefer to carry the Ruger simply because its more comfortable and it doesn't dig into my side like the Glock tends to do.

I carry one of these in this exact configuration iwb. I had a hard time finding a holster that would work this version but I found one, even though it's a universal holster by Quest (that's what the label on the holster says on it.) Most of the holsters that are widely available for the Sp101 are for the 2 and 3 inch models. Just remember that when purchasing one of these.

P226 Enhanced Elite in a Stealth Gear USA IWB Mini chambered in 9mm, running Federal HST 147gr. +P. Two flush-fit Mec-Gar 18 round mags. Nothing better than walking around with over 35 rounds to keep you safe. I just got my CWP in February '16, but I couldn't be more happy with carrying it. Did it sag my pants? Yes. Did Perry construction suspenders fix that? Yes, and bonus, my pants are more comfortable now. I even where the suspenders to work now without my gun, which still goes with me in the car. I'm comfortable all day long, and we've already hit 85 degrees here in NC.

Great review! I carry the sp101 .357 in the 3 inch barrel for my EDC. I don't mind the weight or limited round count because I am experienced, well trained and trust my awareness and judgement on engagement. Love this gun! Can't wait to get the 4 inch version in .22 for plinking! I carry a tactical mini pack slung over my shoulder across the chest and the pack sits on my lower front left torso. The pack has a pouch on the back that the revolver sits in perfect so I can just slide my hand in and pull it out easily for self defense and don't have to be burdened by the weight on my hip. Use a Galco belly band as a back up!

My "woods gun" is a Smith 60-18, J frame Model 60 with a 5" bbl. same concept as this gun: light, and easy to carry, and on the very edge of what can handle full house .357's. In the woods, hiking or during deer season, I have that gun either on my belt or in my ruck stuffed with 180gr Buffalo Bore hard cast lead. On the street, it's either a G26 or a Shield. But, I would not hesitate to take the 4" SP101 on the trail.

The 4.2" thing is for marketing in Canada, where 105mm is the minimum length to get out of the "prohibited" category. 4" is only 101mm, whereas 4.2" is 106mm. Even NAA makes a 4.2" Mini Revolver for Canada. If you are going to market to both, why even bother with a 4", and then have to re-tool to make 5mm longer barrels.

Yea... I carry the same gun as tacticaldoodle. 2 inch SP101 with 357 Hornady Critical Defense. I live in the country though and I usually also carry a couple rounds of snake shot which I have had the need for before. In the country the need for a 357mag may arise with critters. If I lived in the city I wouldn't carry it because of the limited round capacity. I probably have ~1000+ rounds through it (I reload) and can consistently hit a 4" plate at 15 yards in DA. Mine has trigger/action work done to it.

On the note of this as a carry option, I just got a 2in SP101 back in february. Mine (and looking at the pics on ruger's site all the current .357 mag versions) has the tapered cylinder previously only done for distributor exclusives. Also as Nutn noted, there are no real sharp edges anymore as perhaps there were on previous versions (referencing his original review of the 2in version) For a ruger trigger I was really happy. Heavy, yes, but smooth with a crisp break (though there is noticeable grit on the return). So all I ended up doing to it was putting a wilson combat spring kit in there and now it is something like 4.5lbs single action and 9-10 double.

got one of these, love it. We live in the rocky mountains, carry it for black bear protection when I dont want to pack bigger magnum. he dosn't mention how short the grip is. its the major and only downfall. Loaded with full power h110 handloads and a few speedloader strips, its a great packin gun

Put it up against the GP 100. The mother of SP 101. At 15-25 yards, what's the difference?? Using 357mag.

Shooters can never be as accurate as the capability of any firearm. The SP101, my first carry back in 2002 and it is still in the collection.
