In this unique video, I examine the possibility of what could be a next iteration of the 600i Touring for Origin in Star Citizen. Instead of just explaining what I might change, such as I have done in other Architect reviews videos, this time I actually model those ideas into virtual reality. Come check it out!

@ephalanx1

Just to add some perspective on windows in games. When you have a glass area you have to worry about rending what is behind that glass adding to the load on your client and also what information the server needs to send to you. So that is why outside of the cockpits they try to cut down on that. Also keep in mind we dont know what space is needed for game play - collisions and the like.
@mr.fabulousmegardev6256

This is probably what's going to cause the most friction between making a beautiful ship, versus what the game engine allows us to beautify without sacrificing FPS/stability. It's really a shame our computing technology is limited by potato-PC users :P
@ephalanx1
@ephalanx1 5 лет назад
Mr.FabulousGardeV yep - unfortunately this is the case with many many games. Only so much that can be done. The fact that they are this far with much of it is quite impressive. These are flying FPS huge levels with moving parts in them!? Wow. What other game has that? But I digress. I mean if they only had to worry about a single ship then they could probably do that but game devs always have to cut corners with any game they do. Thank god this isn’t console we’d be worse off. Another thing that kills this sort of thing is networking. Networking isn’t there in terms of latency and transferring all that data efficiently so you have to scale it back. It’s all good. We also didn’t have electric cars back in the day. Took them awhile to really get here.
@jbirdmax
@jbirdmax 5 лет назад
Is that why there’s literally zero difference in performance when I switch to third person and start panning the camera all around? Rendering the reflection on the glass is far more expensive than showing what’s on the other side. That’s why none of the glass surfaces in Star Citizen have a reflection and appear invisible.
@ephalanx1
@ephalanx1 5 лет назад
@@jbirdmax No because you are already accounting for the pilot area and the areas in your ship that aren't culled due to a wall that you cannot see through even still you probably have your entire ship loaded up into memory because its all within LOD0-1 at the time based on distance and they dont want you hiccuping having to load the next room state as you walk into it. As the main player your client is responsible for rendering everything within certain distances. These are pretty large, 100-200 meters, etc before the lod is dropped to the next level. But the issue its not really for your rendering that area, its the other players seeing your ship at a distance. If they have all this area where they can see into your ship, they have will need to worry about rendering that as well. Its more expensive for everyone else outside of the ship. I'll have to find a tut that explains it better. Also I'm not saying this is exactly every reason for why this is done, just one potential reason. Yes the glass and reflections are also performance concerns but that can be handled sufficiently with the GPU nothing has to go back to the server for coordinates or object states that are changing constantly even at low LOD states (which are pretty paltry but still a drag that you can remove by just blocking off these areas - whos in the room, where in the room, are the lights on, etc.) Does that make sense?
@danilooliveira6580
@danilooliveira6580 5 лет назад
this doesn't really apply, there is a huge glass flow in the middle of the room, and there is another are of the ship that is completely open. a small window wouldn't make much of a difference, specially since there are other ships that do have windows on the rooms (if I'm not mistaken)

Yeah, the 600i got quite big. It's 90 metres to a constellation's 60 or so, and much wider for good measure. I'd love to see some inbetween variants. Also I'd love to see a 'luxury' warship. Much as that sounds like an oxymoron. But the 325p exists, and constitutes a 'luxury' fighter, so... You know. Stranger things have happened. XD
@Spartan536
@Spartan536 4 года назад
@Morphologis, I would replace the cactus looking plant with a vertical aquarium, but that is just me nitpicking. As for using more glass, I have a solution, derived from the Anvil Carrack just with more opulance as it's Origin. Keep the glass floor like you have it, it's beautiful, but when the weapons systems are armed they will be closed off by exterior extending armor panels that look like the interior/exterior walls respectively. This would scream opulence and security, something someone owning or operating an Origin spacecraft would expect as standard for the money. Using this approach to all of the glass areas outside of the bridge would also allow for some of the best panoramic vistas of any ship and would set the 600i apart and be a pinnacle of opulent engineering.
@ikkeheltvanlig

I would really enjoy a synthesis of both your designs. Your vision of the use of the room, and her darker more exclusive look, narrow spotlights above each seat for reading, and a combination of the fish tank with plants beneath the stairs, wrapping up along the backside of the fish tank for a dramatic exotic image. I think that would make for a very contemplative space that inspires awe and intrigues while having a very relevant use
@commanderroddi7742

I think that the Touring module is pretty well done. One thing I thought could be cool would be to add some sort of "Screen" that would simulate a window (maybe with a camera) to let people view the outside in their room (not the same as a window, but would work nicely, I think) and make the bottom floor a more "quit" or calming gathering area (which you managed to get that feeling of a relaxing lounge, maybe it may have some soft of coffee bar? while the rear area with the bar, pool table would be a "louder" area with musing basting, somewhat like a bar/club area. Just a thought. Great work.

Amazing work Morph! Excellent ship choice for this video and great job to you and your GF going the extra mile and mocking up your changes. It really elevates this architect series. Love the glass bottom floor expansion and a bigger plant or aquarium is exactly what I was hoping for. The spaces that still bug me the most are the empty space in the bridge between the back of the captain’s seat and the bulkhead and the crew quarters with the giant empty space in the middle. The back of the bridge could be used for tactical or engineering stations or maybe a small seating area for guests of the captain. As far as the crew quarters, either expand the rooms or add an activities space or something in the center. So much more could be done in this ship.
@chrictonj9503

Very well presented. Thankyou. Adding books makes me think of Jules Verne's Nautilus. Large viewscreens in the cabins would provide both a "window" (that could present more views than just whatever is to starboard or port) and an information display (I'm thinking course, weather at destination, the day's schedule and menu, mail, news, etc.).

Morph, You done real good bro, real good. It would be interesting to see a new rendition of the Star Runner as it has volumes of "wasted spaces". Moving the servers into the scanning area (perhaps expanding the suite), moving the Crews mess/lounge area into the old server room area. Reconfig the old mess/habitation area into a split level - Capt Berth up/2nd berthing area or medical lower. Add 3 additional bunks in each berthing space. Combine command and control (CIC) into the fwd hall with the bridge. Reconfig the 2nd bridge hallway into usable space-remote turrets & drone deployment control areas, with escape pods opposite. Engineering can occupy some of the lower level tunnel space to increase the engineering suite and a drone/droid storage & repair station. Another project is the SW Old Republic ship X-70B. The designers did a 600i on it. Massive ship with enough volume for 3 decks of ship utilization, wasted for 1 deck. It is supposedly a spy ship with stealth and amenities. Helluva ship designed by a great designer, but no naval architecture background. Big ship with a tiny crew...and tons of empty spaces.

Very nice rework. Love that you actually constructed something instead of just using words to explain it all. Always nice to be able to see if what I am envisioning the words to mean is what the actual designer is envisioning as well. Would have loved to see a window instead of that giant bookcase though. Not enough room for all the classic books that rich people may want to read, but too large overall in my opinion. Would feel more like a library than a lobby meeting space if it was fully stocked. Put a window for half of that wall and then leave the other half as the bookcase.

9:23 Morph, one of your fish appears to be escaping back there... In all seriousness, I love this take on the Touring Module. The seating area flows a lot better, the lighting features add both utility and personality, and I like your thoughtful take on the stairway placement. My favorite feature, though, is definitely the expanded floor window - the way it covers the entire seating area looks fantastic, and it fits perfectly with the idea of a Touring-focused ship. Like the points you made on your first 600i video, I would love to see CIG take some of these ideas into consideration for a rework of the ship.

Like you mentioned, as a lobby, it's redundant. What I would do, put some recessed seating around the walls, remove the glass planter, and put an elevated dance pole, Build a DJ nook under the stairs and to the side of the planter. and then make the center area a dance floor. Perhaps even keep the glass floor. Maybe do some kind of grid shape to it, similar to disco squares but maybe hexagons instead? Also, make some nice colorful lighting for a dance party. This would also have the effect of making a disco lighting glow on the exterior of the ship where the glass floor is. ... Maybe extend the DJ nook around the right a bit to make a small drink service. .... ok double checking... Have the dancer platform elevated enough that you could make the bottom part of the DJ nook with a cutout to look out into the space and have a small bar to the right of that. To the right of the bar, 1 or MAYBE 2 elevated round tables with rounded sofas roped off. The bookshelves would be recessed sofas for general seating. The lighting and speakers can easily be put into the ceiling overhangs and upper ceiling. Anyways... that's my idea.

All you'd need is a localized artificial gravity-field dampening sleep/escape pod. 8:40. Agreed. Nothing would say high-class and sophistication like the ownership of an antiquated book filled library against the backdrop of a paleolithic cave art wall on a spacefaring yacht. First off, I agree with you on the 600i Tourng's lack of windows in the passenger rooms, that would really have helped a lot, but maybe with the future of Render to Texture technology you could create a live feed and turn a wall into a digital window of the view outside (or some other scene completely). Secondly, I do like your take on the lobby. Your skills as an architect and understanding room purpose and flow really show through your design. The only comment I'd have is that you didn't take into consideration the thickness of the hull when you designed the floor window. That really does constrict the view through it, although the much larger window in your design would definitely combat that nicely.

Jesus man. You did beautiful work. CIG would benefit drastically by at least bringing you on as a consultant. Additionally, all of us would benefit. Please keep this up.

This is great and I wish CIG would adopt some of these ideas into the ship. I'd love to see your take on the rear habitation area, I really love what you've done with this space, and I'm betting your design for the rear area would be spectacular given what I've seen here.

This is absolutely beautiful, the only thing I can think of to add is a backup system for the windows, like a emergency bulkhead in between the glass layers(assuming double layered glass) Incase the outer layer is breached, but that is unrelated to interior design.

In design, you've got to remember Mies: Less is more. This big stair in the middle, taking all the place and only serving for circulation have to leave to proper user space.

Lovely redesign, these different views really are beautiful, but also informative as one actually learns things about spaces, materials and more. As for me I would want a lot more natural materials, I like things as they are, my home is a lot of lacquered steel, wood, raw linen, unpainted plaster. To me it creates a very warm environment that does not pretend to be more than it is, but by doing it well (not there yet for sure) I think that often looks a lot better than clean designs which to me always feel a bit cold and not very homely. A ship like the Origin 600 or 890 should really be a home away from home. Of course with the 890 you have the space to create a lot of different settings within the same ship which is also really appealing. The 600 has some space for that as well, like in the upper area I would keep it more clean to make the view the main focal point, but that downstairs ara I would go with those natural materials to make it feel warm and more cozy.

After viewing both CIGs and your design, I think you did an amazing job... frankly Id love to see them inherit some of your ideas. Its VERY impressive you took the time to model it out yourself! Talk about going the extra mile! I feel like this video will never get enough view to justify 10 hours of work, but I found it super interesting and I hope you do more.

The changes I would make to your design specifically would be in the lower lounge, adding a second sofa opposite the first backing up against the stairs and glass column. i would also add windows in the cabins on the upper deck as that is one of my majoy gripes with the in game design. In terms of my own redesign however i would take a more drastic approach to the ship; firstly i would put and engineering station and a science station on the bridge in both variants, consolidating the operation space and filling out the bridge a bit more. Next i would move the module to the rear of the ship with the center section bow being taken up by a recreational and dining space on the upper deck for crew and/or guests and crew quarters on the lower deck, the crew quarters would be similar to the upper deck quarters on the current touring module, the upper deck would also have a cieling window looking out into space. The rear section is interesting becasue it is technically three levels in comparison to the front and mid sections that are only two levels; starting off with the connection corridors between the mid and aft sections, the lower corridor would attach to the mid section in the center rather than the left side and swiftly go down a set of stairs to a permenant cargo bay with vehicle elevator and engineering rooms flanking on each side. vertical cargo pads would line the walls except for a space to the right of the corridor which would house a second elevator leading from the top floor to outside. the connection corridor on the upper level would be identical to to the one on the lower level but going up to the top floor of the module. it is here we go into the exploration module first; the top of the exploration module would be a dedicated scanning room with a holographic globe above a glass floor, on either side of the globe would be a scanning station and at the back of the room there would be a large panoramic window with a wide workstation desk just inside. To the right side of the corridor is the second elevator that leads down to the cargo bay however between the scanning room and the cargo bay is a general purpose lab(exploration isn't just about scanning, there are different sciences to it as well) this lab can be adapted to be used in a number of ways depending on the owner's preference. The Touring module is a bit different but still follows the design of the ship; the top deck would house a cosy lounge and bar with panoramic views behind and above the ship, the mid deck would house guest cabins (one fore with a programable screen wall like in the 890, and three aft with rear facing windows) again these cabins would be similar in design to the ones currently in the the touring module. Plants and/or a fishtank would take up the center of the space between the cabins and on either side of the room would be bathrooms. the cieling of this room would be glass around the central ornament to allow guests on the top floor to view fish and/or plants beneath their feet. i hope this gives a clear picture of my idea, sorry i'm late to the party, it took a while to think up. thank you @Morphologis

incredible work, and a super interesting video! as a mechanical design engineer, I see the manufacturability behind these ships and absolutely love that you think about that too. and as a space engineers addict (because what else would an engineer do in his free time) I'd LOVE if you did some space engineers stuff :D

Great work! I personally think that CIG don’t always take the best decisions concerning ship interiors, and they should probably count on people that create interiors or living spaces for a living, or at least are professional interior designers. They do a great job, but they often show a lack of logic or common sense, like the absence of privacy in the “dormitory” of the 600i, or the great loss of space with the Phoenix’s jacuzzi, the total absence of modifications between this model and the other Constellations concerning the whole cockpit + crew living space, creating a “WTF” feeling, like “I think you forgot to redesign at least 2 rooms inside this ship! Or the fishtanks just over you head when you’re a guest in bed, and to finish, the big glass allowing everybody to see what you do in the big bedroom... I love CIG and Star Citizen, but those examples are quite frustrating I would say, and I only talked about a few...

The three cylindrical occasional tables could have incorporated shelves or niches for books to more directly tie them to the "library" feel of the room. Also some "old world" style star-maps or charts could have been used as artwork to further announce the "purpose" of the space. Great work by the way! I'd like to see something like this rework for the crew accomodations.

@KuraIthys
@KuraIthys 5 лет назад
Oh yes. Everything about those crew quarters is just... Wrong. From the interior layout, to the way it connects to the rest of the ship (single most difficult place to get to in the ship) The crew area doesn't provide cooking facilities, which suggests the crew are using the main area, yet getting from the crew area to the main lounge area in the rear is one of the most convoluted journeys you can take in the ship. Especially in the exploration variant that lacks a staircase. (And of course, in the touring variant, depending on how you're using it you can just pretend the crew area doesn't exist, and assign the main cabins as crew quarters.) Really, given that the crew area is designed for 4 crew members, and given how large it is, it would be so trivial to use the exact same cabin design as seen in the touring module. Especially since the cabins have their own bathrooms, you'd have no need of separate crew bathrooms, which renders that whole area usable - with maybe only the large crew lockers and escape pods still being relevant. Fit 4 cabins in there and a small hallway and you'd already improve things a huge amount, and there's more than enough space to make that happen.

Such a beautiful ship. My biggest gripe with the 600i is the crew quarters being one big room that’s shared with no privacy. That space would be cool to see an alternate iteration. Second is it would seem that the 600i Explorer was secondary to the Touring. It seems to lack exploratory features other than the globe.

Really cool idea. Just one addition to your design. There should be a button to hide the bottom window or make it opaque. Just because there can be situations where the outside view would hurt the overall look, for example in a hangar, and some people might also feel uncomfortable sitting on top of a glass floor.

@Cythil

Fantastic! I see you came to the same conclusions I had about the space and what I think would make it better. I especially want the glass floor to be bigger as I think is, and aquarium/terrarium pillar, are the centrepieces of the space. Adding a bit more utility to the walls is something I approve of to. All this make the space seem a lot more usable while at the same time feeling very spacious and luxurious. Not Spartan. I do wonder how the window looks from outside the ship however. Now the original window do not look that pretty from the outside so I can not think it would look that much worse. But that is always a consideration to be had. In the end I think they should explore the floor window more to see what they can get away with. My experience of design is that is generally good to go to the extremes just to find out what you can actually do. You know when you gone to far and can scale back from that. But you never know what that boundary is if you do not try go beyond it.
