An Awesome Antenna For VHF 2m SSB CW, Part 1 Build.

The hourglass antenna looks like a great design for horizontally polarised VHF operations in SSB, CW or digital modes. Its vertical shape makes it easy to fit anywhere and it is not too long to fit inside a regular car. Efficiency is near that of a Moxon, about 5db, but with a bi-directional, almost omni-directional pattern. Much bigger than a Moxon, which I consider to be portable, but nevertheless it could be dismantled for transport. It is sort of a double Delta Loop. The feed-point has a fifty Ohm impedance, which is another great advantage as no matching is required. Get extra content and help this channel: / radioprepper

This is a fantastic channel. I just wish that the UK Ham operators were more like you. Here in the UK experimentation seems to be dead. All the equipment is purchased and not constructed. I am one of the few constructors left, I built my station all homebrew right from the PSU through to the antennas. Favorite bands - 160, 80 AM and SSB from home, 17mtrs ssb when mobile/static mobile. VHF and UHF is all but dead unless you are at the top of a mountain. There are however many VHF stations in Ireland still operating. Thanks for putting these videos online, My complements to you and your family.

By now, you've probably seen that Peter Parker, VK3YE posted a video of his 2m hourglass antenna. He did some overnight beaconing and had many contacts, and at least one was over 400 km. I too wish modern VHF radios were all mode radios instead of FM and maybe some digital audio.

Thumbs Up! Seeing that the cross members are epoxied into place, shortening the wire will result in a wider gap at the feed-point. I suggest to cut a vertical slot in the 'mast', top and bottom along with a centered hole in the cross members. Secure each cross member to the mast with a nut and bolt which will allow the boom to slide up or down according to slack in the wire. Those binding post to BNC adapters are invaluable when it comes to experimenting.

I was going to relocate the lower cross member but finally had to cut only 4cm, so didn't have to... My cross members bowed a little and the wire is as tight as a guitar string, but it works!

Hey Gil, just found another 2 meter X antenna build on RU-vid. Look for VK3YE. He also said ARRL had this antenna featured in an issue. That's maybe where I saw it first. Keep building and I'll keep watching. 73

Great videos keep up the good work. . I was involved in a shootout with various types of antennas and one was this stacked delta loop. I was going to say it didn't perform well and we were testing omni antennas but just realized the loop was fed horizontal so need to do a recheck on that design. It is a bidirectional so without a reflector and talking in one direction it wouldn't be best option. It can be rotated 90 deg for vertical easy enough for terrestrial work.

Excellent video Gil, I’ve never come across this interesting design. It’s going to be my next antenna build- I’m halfway through a slim Jim made with 6 strands of solid 1mm house wire, twisted with a drill. Inspiration taken from your laddder line build. Have a good Sunday evening 👍🏼

A slight tweak should rectify this no doubt (shorten) - wondering how much you're gonna have to cut off? I'll be watching the results.

How does this compair to a biquad antenna for 2m that is fed in the middle where they cross. The hourglass antenna looks great and is bidirectional and great for Florida where most qso's are north and south . I am thinking of PVC pipe and 1/4 inch aluminum ground wire for elements with lmr400 coax up on the roof. For a budget setup. AA4CP Chuck Port Salerno FL USA

I think I've seen this for 6 meter, maybe somewhere on the internet (RU-vid?) This is compact and easily transportable for field use. Nice build. Spray it with spar varnish for weather resistance. Waiting for the next.

You might want to separate the wires where they cross over...put one on each side of the center post and isolate them a little....!

In my opinion you should use fiberglass elements not made from wood. I fact wood is easly to modifite but there isn't water proof. 73!
@RadioPrepper
@RadioPrepper 5 лет назад
Probably but I will at least clear-coat it. This one is also not for a permanent installation.
@Steve-GM0HUU
@Steve-GM0HUU 3 года назад
Although wood is not normally the best material, I did read one article that suggested wood was OK for this type of antenna - on the basis that the high voltage points (at the ends of the 4 dipoles) are not secured to the wood.

Thank you for this Video. Very interesting antenna project. I will have an idea for a modification, turning the lower horizontl part for 90 degrees. Perhaps the result ist a more perfect all around characteristic? Will make a simulation at MMANA ... vy73 from Hamburg/Germany, Dietmar, DL4HAO

I had a KW 711A 2m all-mode 20 years ago. NOthing ever on CW/SSB. Now I have a Yaesu 736R with four-bands all-mode. SOTA/POTA has really kicked up the interest and usage of weak modes on all frequencies here in the US, so I expect to make contacts this time around. Hasn't happened yet, but I need more antenna (and more time to play radio).

Back in my Coast Guard days, stationed at the LORAN (Long Range Aid to Navigation) installation on French Frigate Shoals, we had a radioman who built antennas to maintain his sanity. It didn’t work... he got to the point where he translated every sound into morse code alphabet. A door would slam and he’d say... “That’s an E”. He also had the maddening habit of constantly repeating things like “Let me call you hinges, cause you’re something to a door” or “I want to roll you in powdered eggs and look for the wet spots”. We had a 16 millimeter copy of “Gone With the Wind” and he would lip synch every word spoken by Prissy and Scarlett. Rumor was he went insane when he got home after that 12 month assignment... (his house was on a busy street, with car horns beeping 24/7 and he couldn’t make sense of the letters he was deciphering. He thought the car horns were sending coded messages.)

That's what Morse does to you ;-) LOL. Sometimes I do hear letters... I guess that's how it starts...

I had the mfj 6 meter version of the 2 meter radio your thinking of. I loved it. Incidentally I wish people used 2 meter SSB. Also, I have a great design for a compact 2 element 2 meter Yagi if anyone is interested I'll pass it along. The boom length is only around 1 foot and its that short because it uses a folded dipole for the fed element and that allows a 50 ohm feed point when the radiators are that close. Its roughly 7 dbi which is as good as you can get for 2 elements. The front and back have about the same radiation pattern with a bit less off the back but off the sides its near nothing.

Ham for 10 years. Not so active last 4 years. Never hear CW on 2M. Did meet new ham near by and did get sked for 2 meter CW. Yes. Problem is all mode 2 meter transceivers are expensive. Other problem is people not learning CW. Is a shame. The 2M QSO was a lot of fun. 2M rag chew. 80M is a challenge for most HAMs. 20 and 40 meters hop away from your city. So 10 years later finally a 2M QSO. I need to get set up on the digital modes and look for people that way and try to set up SSB or CW QSO.

Yes, fortunately old ones are affordable I guess we need to call more often on 2m CW..
