Part 1: • An Awesome Antenna For... The Hourglass antenna, design from John Stanley, K4ERO. Very good performance even though band conditions were far from optimal. Definitely a keeper! Nice work on making the antenna. Have yet to hear anyone using CW on 2M. I did hear some 2M AM activity actually. Need to check in with that group again. Wish more activity was out there on 2M SSB like most have mentioned. I just put up a long boom 14 ele 40ft above ground. QSO this morning 28mi away towards a direction that has hill in the way. Always been tuff on FM Vertical that way. Was able to go to 1 Watt on Yagi and worked 100% copy for other station. They we're running 8 ele 25ft above ground. Keep enjoying weak signal modes on 2M. I have and still am 😀 73

Hello Gil! Nice antenna and I hope to build one. I have a Yaesu ft-857d and I live in North Fort Worth with Fort Worth to the South and Dallas to the east. Maybe I will find some hams that work 2meter SSB and CW! What guage wire did you use and what length did you end up with? Thanks!

You might have to put one in the doorway to beam toward Italy.. but it would be fun to build another and phase them for a two element vertical phased array.. although horizontally polarized I guess... which would make it pointless. Better off with a two el Yagi Yuda array. lol. Thanks Gil! Kick A&# rig btw. 73 OM

A tiny CW 2m radio would be nice. If the goal is to increase CW in the VHF band, having the tiny radio encoding and decoding Morse code would create a lot more interest. Once there's a small keyboard and monitor, or a VPN or WiFi server that allows a phone or tablet to be the user interface, then it's a matter of more software to add a digital mode. JS8Call is interesting to me on 2m because it works so well with weak signals that knife edge refraction could expand range significantly beyond line of sight.
@RadioPrepper
@RadioPrepper 4 года назад
Do you find people using JS8Call on 2m?
@radioastronomy2001
@radioastronomy2001 4 года назад
It would be interesting to see if JS8Call works over 2m EME. I am too lazy to build the antennas.
@Liberty4Ever
@Liberty4Ever 4 года назад
@@radioastronomy2001 - I've thought the same thing. JS8Call via EME should work, even though the JS8Call protocol is optimized for problematic HF propagation. I've been watching for two people to do that. It would allow very long range communications whenever the moon is in the sky. JS8's ability to pull a weak signal out of the noise might even allow a more reasonable antenna, maybe a portable Yagi, to be used with a 50W mobile transceiver.
@Liberty4Ever
@Liberty4Ever 4 года назад
@@RadioPrepper - Jason, KM4ACK, did an experiment where he used an attenuator to determine that he and a friend 45 miles away in mountainous terrain could communicate on 2m with JS8Call using 1/8 watt. That's impressive. As I recall, they had decent antennas but nothing too extreme. Not a rubber duck, but not an 11 element Yagi either. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DMbjZKXRXRk.html

This 50 ohm feed point into a Delta..... Basically a 1 wavelength loop is a 100 ohms. I read the paper and no design equations. He did mention that a Delta with twice the length in the vertical sides as to the base gives you the 50 ohms.,.. I never heard of that. But if true we can get rid of the 4 to 1 balun. OR does the antenna look like two 100 ohm loops in parallel...... somehow?
@RadioPrepper
@RadioPrepper 4 года назад
I don't have the paper in front of me but wasn't there something about phase inversion in the middle? Not sure but it certainly does work!

@@RadioPrepper It is a collectible as far as I'm concerned. My first HF rig (1989) was a Yaesu FT-747GX, which wasn't any special radio, but I would love to have it back. I got into CB in the early '70's, and use to go into a local HAM store after school. I was amazed by the microwave oven-sized radios with their glowing tubes then, and even more so now. Truly a big part of history. Thanks for the videos.
