At 06:00 the boat shook to the sound of thunder: we had just experienced an earthquake at anchor.
Roughly 90 percent of all earthquakes and 75 percent of all active volcanoes on Earth occur along the Ring of Fire, and we have been sailing in this seismic minefield for the last ten years. We've experienced a few earthquakes first hand, but never before at sea.
In 2022, we arrived in the Sunda Islands where we have seen more volcanoes than anywhere else. In the podcast we try to work out why people choose to live in such a risky area.
Back in 2019, we sailed to one of the most famous volcanoes in the world: Krakatoa. We made two video episodes about the experience:
Krakatoa: Part 1 - • Landing on an active v...

Have you ever been on a boat during an earthquake, tsunami or when a volcano has erupted? We'd be interested to hear your tale...

Yes many times. Most recently, got an alert on my phone of a threat of 3 meter tsunami in Okinawa as a consequence of the earthquake in Taiwan in early April. In the end it was only 10 centimeters … Thanks for a great podcast. You may not be scientists but your informed laymen and have lots of experience. I also spent a lot of time with fishermen in the tsunami stricken area of Japan in 2011. Some chose to move their boats and others

We were of a fleet of rally boats (about 35 boats) sailing down the West Australian coast on Boxing day 2004. We heard the PAN PAN regarding the tsunami but didn't understand the implications. Fortunately, there was no loss of life and minimal damage where we were. Having arrived at Bunbury we all went ashore for a BBQ. It was then that we noticed the tide coming and going in 30 minute intervals. Our dinghies would lifted on the rising tide to meet us at the bar, then be washed 500 metres offshore. Little did we know the wider consequences of what was happening and the huge loss of life that occurred. Given the uncertainty we all decided to abandon the BBQ and return to our yachts. It was just as well, as a micro, localised storm hit the harbour within the hour. 60 knot winds saw several boats drag. Not a problem except when the tide departed and left 4 yachts high and dry. Members of the fleet quickly assembled ashore and waited for the next incoming tide. All 4 boats were refloated with only very minor damage. On our yacht my wife Louise and our daughter ran the engine at full throttle to offset the wind gusting down the harbour. One of the most bizarre days on the water we have ever experienced. As mentioned we would learn of the impact across SE Asia and as far as Sri Lanka over the coming days. When we sailed along the top of Java in 2022, the effects of the tsunami were still apparent. Equally in 2013 we sailed past Gunung Sangeang which is an active complex volcano on the island of Sangeang in Indonesia. The volcano had erupted in December 2012 and would again erupt a year after we sailed past in May 2013. It was a very angry volcano and we watched very carefully as we went past (there was an official warning issued and the residents had been evacuated). We breathed a sigh of relief when we were clear.

Weather I live in Scotland the last two weeks, I have been able to dig my garden so wet. I really loved you outlook on risk I have worked at sea and the last few years in construction. H and S is so over done I am surprised we get any work done. Plus the big thing you are close to that could blow it's top at any second scary.

Interesting stories! I had various experiences with earth quakes and a terrifying one with a volcanic eruption, but never on a boat, must have been truly odd and scary! Wishing you many more years of happy & healthy life sailing! Cheers from 🇨🇦

Thank you. Yes, it's a strange sensation being on the water when that happens. Can't explain it 🤔

IMHO, Living a life risk-free would be boring. Thank you for your fascinating discussion of earthquakes, tsunamis, and the Wallace Line. I enjoyed and learned a few new things. Happy Mothers Day to all the Mothers around the 🌎. Thanks for sharing.💐

Spot on. We need a little risk, although I prefer it when I have some kind of control over those risks!

I was born in Los Angeles and now share living in Tuscan home and SoCal. When I was 8 months pregnant LA was hit with a severe earthquake that took down part of a freeway and hospitals amount others. I had been ironing the night before and the ironing board flew across the room and landed on my stomach. Baby and I survived. A few years ago - another bad quake hit while we were on our boat - in a marina. Our last and neighbor vessels started swaying BADLY and our mast hit the others.

Krakatoa was so big in AD500 that it Joined Sumatra and Java , She erupted and caused the Dark Age around AD 536 . I was Anchored near the island of Isabela in the Galapagos back in 2015 i think , there was a earthquake in Ecuador and Tsunami Alert . we had an Anchor watch , and at around 3am the water Swirled around , but no real wave . The current in the Wallace Line Sweeps most Animal and Plants Trying to cross it , out to the Indian Ocean ,

I woke up to swirling water this morning. I normally put this down to currents but knowing what we know now, maybe it's something else...

Just checked to get an accurate count. Approximately 230,000 people were killed in 2004 when the Sumatra Andaman earthquake caused the Indian Ocean tsunami.

Fun fact about the 2004 tsunami. As you probably know the Thai for ice is narm king, literally "hard water". Well our Australian ABC sent a young reporter to the devastated part of Thailand. He must have asked what the name of the village was, but all the locals could talk about this hard water that wiped them out. So we had the very embarrassing video clip of the young reporter, one leg propped up on a log saying "This is so-and-so reporting to you from the destroyed village of Narm Keng". Hilarious in the midst of a pretty terrible moment.

Bali "only" has two active volcanoes: Mt. Agung & Mt. Batur. 🤓 Look up "Sundaland", this is the dryland during the ice age when sealevel was much lower. Basically all the sea between sumatra, java and borneo was dry and asian animals could roam to all those islands. Sulawesi, and lombok and towards the east were mostly remained isolated. 19:17 "This is the fastest way to get high" had to take a second there..

I was watching you from a year ago on a podcast Ocean Cruisers, you talked about boats you wanted but there is a OK very costly boat on the market. I think it is named after a sail you love, what do you think of this boat. Just love to ken if the cash no object which new dream boat would you choose. Sorry hard question but you have seen it done it lived through it so?
@followtheboat

Personally, and this is just personal, I would stick with the known blue water cruiser manufacturers like Oyster. It does depend on what kind of cruising you plan to do though.

Please explain how molten rock & metal at earths core can hold a magnetic field to influence your sv's compass. Hold a fridge magnet in a candle flame and observe how well it sticks to your fridge afterwards. The deepest hole ever drilled into the earth is 8 miles (Kola Deep, Russia), So how does that identify a molten iron core.
