What is YOUR best tip for any aspiring cruisers?

Knowing different languages is fantastic. John helped his friend deliver his yacht from Ireland to France. John had been learning French with Babbel and was able to order in restaurants for the 3 of them. He felt so proud of himself.

I think there is a myth that only "one" boat will do. Many boats can serve our needs. I think the boat's readiness is important.

Brilliant podcast! And such an honour to be quoted on the always wonderful FTB channel. I love, and subscribe to, the idea that a very well-sorted older boat may indeed be a smarter purchase than a brand new boat kitted-out to the nines. Look at all the troubles RubyRose are having with their new catamaran, even following his ridiculously hyper-granular oversight of the build in Vietnam! Go figure. Cheers! Bill & Janis, SY MISS FOXY.

GOAT=greatest of all time,absolutely loved the video as always,very pertinent information that crossed off pretty much every topic on a vessel except coming in to docking in berths or fueling wharf in adverse conditions and dealing with any miscommunication there such,this is mainly one of the most stressful times of a skipper and crew due to potential damage to the vessel and crew feelings. Ive really warmed to you both over the years,being slightly younger and much less experienced than you both I live my dream vicariously through you,hopefully my ducks will be in a row sooner than later,much appreciated,Dirk.

Personally I think even if your income is rock solid, you should never buy a boat on credit - at least, not completely, and definitely not through a lease-to-own construction. If you've seen a boat going for 50k, and you've got 35k of your own money, then sure, go to the bank for the rest and make it a priority to forego shiny new doodads and gadgets until you've paid the bank for the chunk of your boat they own. This, of course, assuming there's no major works to be done on the boat. On another tangent, advice for purchasing: don't get hung up on the latest and greatest. Sure, that nice 2016 Dufour 36 looks great, and potentially is great, but you can pick up a 1980's Westerly Corsair (same length) for fewer boat bucks, and have a (in my opinion anyway) comparatively better boat. My personal "sweet spot" is late 70's to early 90's - because back then most boats were built like the proverbial brick house, with fully tabbed in interiors, and more fiberglass than you can shake a stick at. Westerly and Amel being (again, in my humble opinion) 2 of the best value-for-money brands you can get.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 3 месяца назад
I tend to agree on borrowing money, because you just never know how much you're going to need to spend once you're on board. If you start off in debt it will only get worse. Also, boats built in the 70s to late 80s are as strong as tractors. And get better with age! Esper was built 1988, and I think you can add Oysters to your list. 😉🤓 Liz

Thanks for including our comment. My husband was in the Irish navy reserve and got his yacht master before we bought Wave Dancer. We had hired a yacht before buying to check it was a viable option for us with our young children. On 2007 we bought her & kids were 2, 6 and 9

i'm from colorado and you see a few dozen youtube sailing channels and you say "oh this boat is affordable". I paid for a RYA coastal yachtmaster fasttrack course. 7 weeks living on the boat and sailing everyday: definitely a good crash course and if you want to deal with boat life stuff. some days good weather, some days terrible force 7 and 8 upwind sailing. also has let me reevaluate what size boat is comfortable living aboard: also with 3-5 crew on a 40ft you realize its bigger and easier than you think, not like an RV of the same size.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 3 месяца назад
40ft is a luxurious size for doing an RYA course. All mine were 34-38ft! Any of those courses are invaluable for giving prospective cruisers a taste life afloat. Glad you got to do it 👍👍

The other upside of racing is that you will go out in all conditions--competitive racing classes go out in rain, cold, high winds, larger seas... best of all, on someone else's boat. Racing classes also generally have very high safety protocols which translate directly to cruising.

Although adding proper personal gear to yourself and your crew is vitally important, the same goes for the boat to make it seaworthy. However, adding various equipment (expensive) to compensate for lack of experience is tempting for the inexperienced wanna-be cruisers. That will be an economic barrier (i.e., I need more money to get going). I suggest a more frugal gadget purchasing approach and instead build real-world experience - step-wise to be confident in what is essential.

Couple tips that stand out for me, is "Go with the flow", this means, if the tide is against you or weather, don't go. Its actually one of the things thats appealing about this pastime if waiting for nature, don't cross the laws of nature. The other is, when something goes wrong, well thats to be expected, but if something else goes wrong, pause, find protection, problem solve, there is often a relationship between the 2 events that cannot be anticipated. A possible disaster is looming.

Great video! What I don’t get is “the everything breaks on a boat” saying. As a homeowner for 25+ years. I have replaced or repaired every system in our house. Never mind the cars! In my experience everything will break if you use it, no matter what it is. I do not see the deference. Except maybe the marine tax. Thank you for your efforts

Hello guys, I have been following your channel since 2019. Just before that, I discovered that in the USA, you can buy used sailboats at affordable prices, which motivated me to pursue this dream. In Uruguay, sailboats are scarce and generally very expensive, so I began saving money for this. Unfortunately, the pandemic and other family priorities made me put this dream on hold. Now, my circumstances have changed, and I am once again committed to this venture. I am currently negotiating the purchase of a 34-foot wooden hull sailboat, ready and authorized for navigation up to 60 nautical miles from the coast. My plan is to live aboard at the marina while I learn to sail and make improvements to the boat, then start by sailing near the marina. As I gain experience and confidence, I plan to embark on longer trips. My question for you is: how many incidents do you think can occur at the dock compared to active navigation, considering that at least for the first year, my budget will be tight?
