The video is intended for AECC English (+3 2nd semester) students of Odisha. The chapter discussed here is from 'The Widening Arc: A Selection of Prose and Stories,' an anthology for Degree students published by Kitab Bhawan, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. It is a thought-provoking exploration of the concept of education and what it means to us.

Ma'am can you explain the meaning of "It will be said that, in giving these instances.....forgotten most of what they have been taught", in the last paragraph. Since it wasn't covered in the video.

Hello. Thank you for the pertinent question. The lines that you refer to talk about possible reactions to Nicolson's views on an educated person. Others who read his views might say that he talks, not of real education, but of culture, which is generally accessible and needs no formal training. Nicolson cites instances from literature and music, which are nothing but elements of culture. Someone who has lost touch with what (s)he had been taught in formal education cannot be called educated, but (s)he can be called cultured if (s)he is aware of the contemporary musical/ literary tastes and their traditions. Harold Nicolson disapproves of the thought that if one widens one's knowledge through culture, it does not amount to real education. That's why he sarcastically says that the English language doesn't have a less harsh word than 'culture' for experiential knowledge (= gained from observing one's own and others' cultural practices) that shapes a person's learning continuously, even when (s)he has moved away from all that (s)he had learnt in the classroom. I hope this makes things clear.

Hello. I understand your concern. In the classroom I do use some Odia to explain things in a better way. I record videos solely in English because I believe that continued exposure to the language is important for a learner like you. We learnt our mother tongue by listening to it, whether or not we understood it properly. Similarly, you will acquire this language. Have confidence in yourself. Practice reading, writing, listening and speaking in English. In recorded videos, there is also the advantage of pausing, going back and listening again. All the best.
