Join International Spy Museum Historian and Curator Dr. Andrew Hammond in conversation with General David H. Petraeus (US Army, Ret.) former Director of the CIA. Petraeus has recently written Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine with historian Andrew Roberts. A sweeping examination of war, the book provides a penetrating analysis of what can be learned from the past-and anticipate in the future-in order to navigate an increasingly perilous world.
Hammond will explore with Petraeus how he brought his impressive experience to bear on this incisive study of 70 years of conflict. Petraeus, who is a Spy Museum Honorary Board Member, served over 37 years in the US military, culminating with six consecutive commands, five of which were in combat, including command of the Surge in Iraq, command of US Central Command, and command of coalition forces in Afghanistan. Following retirement from the military and after Senate confirmation by a vote of 94-0, he headed the CIA during a period of significant achievements in the global war on terror, the establishment of important Agency digital initiatives, and significant investments in the Agency’s human capital.
Petraeus graduated with distinction from the US Military Academy and is the only person in Army history to be the top graduate of both the demanding US Army Ranger School and the US Army’s Command and General Staff College. He has earned numerous honors, awards, and decorations, including four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, two NATO Meritorious Service Medals, the Combat Action Badge, the Ranger Tab, and Master Parachutist and Air Assault Badges. Petraeus is currently a Partner in the global investment firm KKR and Chairman of the KKR Global Institute, which he established in May 2013.

As a 21y 7m retired Army NCO I found the conversation informative. Everyone is human; with all the baggage that comes with it. Everyone is fallible and none are without sin. Rank is no guard against that, in fact it makes it easier to fall into. The visibility and politics at the field-grade level generates tighter constraints that thin to that of a high-wire performer, and is far easier to fall from.

i think the issue with Patraeus is that his actions are not in keeping with someone of that stature and responsibility in our defense and intelligence sectors. He shared classified information with his mistress and received a slap on the wrist, meanwhile CIA whistleblowers received prison time for sharing less sensitive information. Now he is cashing in further on his service doing the speaker, guest, expert role on TV. There are better examples to look up to that's for sure.

General Sir, you are awesome! You have a great sense of humor. And so much knowledge in your field. Thank you for all you gave to this great country. My mother (RIP) always had a 'thing' for General Bradley, he was from her era. And I kinda feel that way about you too!!

I'll just put this here because of the feelings that have been expressed and will be in future comments. A lot of people will have a negative reaction to the interviewee in this video and many of them justified from the viewpoint of those people. However, I do think it is valuable to let the man speak, and for us listen - not as some way of honoring him or the opposite, but as a way to understanding his thinking and learning from it, so that we can ourselves use that knowledge to avoid the kind of things that resulted in him becoming as controversial of a character as he is today.

"...On November 9, 2012, he resigned from his position as director of the CIA, citing his extramarital affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell, which was reportedly discovered in the course of an FBI investigation.[19][20] In January 2015, officials reported the FBI and Justice Department prosecutors had recommended bringing felony charges against Petraeus for allegedly providing classified information to Broadwell while serving as director of the CIA.[21] Eventually, Petraeus pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information.[22] He was later sentenced to two years of probation and fined $100,000 for the unauthorized removal and retention of classified material he gave to Broadwell..."

@@alacazaba she didn’t get off easy, she got away with it. Dave collecting that retirement means he gets called on active duty and punished under UCMJ. Since the Uniform Code of Military Justice’s inception in 1950, the code has allowed the military to court-martial certain military retirees. While court-martial proceedings against retirees are rare, the threat of a court-martial is very real.

Total bs presentation and guest. No hard questions! from the hosts to the guy arguably more responsible than anyone for the LOSSES in our two forever wars! This guy is in EVERY conversation looking for what the hell happened that caused us as a country to LOSE BOTH GWOT wars. It's obvious isn't it - Gen P was an academic general in wars that required warriors capability and mentality! All his academic thoughtful informed actions were precisely why we lost - this guy is exactly what he appears to be - an academic and he have come nowhere near national security spears. An academic consultant, maybe, but a warrior leading troops and brutally, ruthlessly dealing wit ha ruthless, brutal enemy. If you want to know how to lose wars, go ahead, buy his book. Early on in the presentation, he invoked Hal Moore, our Vietnam commander who "won" the first major battle of Vietnam - we did NOT win, we got waxed the following day!

The Fall of the "Mighty" General David Petraeus: A Comical Recap of Blunders and Scandals 🎬💥 1. The "Surge" of Disappointments in Iraq (2007-2008) 🚀💣: Hailed as a hero for the Iraq Surge, but in reality, the country descended into a hot mess, breeding ISIS and chaos. Well done, General! 🙄#IraqMessUp #OopsSurge 2. Afghanistan Fiasco (2010-2011) 🏴‍☠️🐪: Petraeus claimed progress, yet the Taliban came roaring back. If success means retreating while the enemy parties, then bravo! 🎉 #PetraeusPretendVictory #TalibanWins 3. CIA Director Turned “Office Romance” Drama 🎥💔: Can’t manage classified documents if you’re busy being love-struck! Sharing secrets with your biographer girlfriend = career meltdown. How spy-worthy of you! 🔑💌 #ClassifiedAffair #LooseLips 4. From Hero to Zero (2012) 🎩🔻: The guy who was supposed to know all about national security compromised it because, well… pillow talk! Great work proving that intelligence isn't his strong suit. 🤦‍♂️ #SecurityFail #AllForLove 5. Plea Deal Humiliation (2015) 👎📜: Guilty of mishandling classified information - as if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, he walked away with a slap on the wrist. Some warrior, huh? 🥴 #DishonorInUniform #GeneralFail 6. The “Petraeus Doctrine” that Didn’t Age Well 📜🧓: His counterinsurgency strategy sounded fancy but turned out to be all bark, no bite. Basically, it’s a doctrine for a war nobody won. 🙃 #DoctrineOfDuds #AcademicFluff The Legacy? A trail of wrecked countries, questionable ethics, and failed strategies. But hey, at least he’s got a good ghostwriter, right? 📚✍️ #EpicFumbles #HeroToHasBeen

🎭 The "Scholar-Warrior" Image-Or Just a Mirage? He was praised as a brilliant strategist and intellectual. But the reality? Maybe those wars were not to be fought. US lost a lot of credibility for fighting wars for the heck of it, and worse- didn't finish them. Anything after Korea is for nothing. Look US handling Ukraine now it's disaster waiting to happen. US will again lost interest there, let them in their own misery and lost. And US will have less friends again. It's possible that US will leave UE also, if that happens, you will not be welcomed back for a long long time.
