@ercvstr When an atheist declares positively worded statements like 'there is no scientific evidence for a Creator' or 'science proves there is no Creator' or 'everything has naturalistic explanations', he is being dogmatic. Atheism as a notion is not dogmatic, but often as it is filtered through the individual's worldview it takes on dogmatic characteristics. So atheism as a cultural epistemology tends to develop dogmatic principles designed to exclude itself from notions of Burden of Proof etc

Masterful handling of the new atheists during the question section. Armstrong clearly has dealt with them before.

What a liar she states that "NOBODY before 16th 17 Century believed the creation story in Genesis 1 literally" Maybe in her convoluted world that is the truth

I enjoy Armstrong's take on how the belief and relationship with God, should be artfully done with care and that compassion should always be part of it. If this is her stance on religious practice, then I am confused by her defense of Islam. Islam does not have the message of compassion. Quite the opposite. Muslims who perform the Salat are cursing Jews and Christians five times a day. And Islam is political. Armstrong blames religious violence on this very flaw.

@TheMrDeist Ever hear of analogy? And atheism is a religion -- a belief system that there is no god, but a belief system all the same, since there is no scientific proof that there is no god any more than than there is scientific proof that there is.

@nishbrown To say that there is no god is a claim. Prove it. And personal insult is not what I would call "rational argument". If you can't egange in a respectful dialogue with people you diagree with, don't do it at all. You discredit rational agnostics like myself. I find atheism as unconvincing as theis or desim. If I mistaken, point out the mistake; but if you cannot do that, striking out against me personally only discredits you.

@TheMrDeist That no more true that it is to say that we really need government for the state to function; we just need democracy. "spirituality" is the soul of religion; and without religion there is no "spirituality" -- even if that religion is so minimalist as to consist of nothing more than the dogma that we don't need religion. It's still a religion; but an absurd and silly one.

@mm1979dk Your personal invective is the only "insult to intelligence". If you can't fault her argument, abstain from condemning what you don't understand and therefore dislike.
@7349yt
@7349yt 14 лет назад
@TheMrDeist You're quite right, atheism is not a religion it is a spirituality. It only becomes a religion when enough people practice it, develop doctrines around it, and start persecuting others. it would be more accurate to say that Marxism and Nazism are atheist religions.

@nishbrown Whose "fundamental definition"? Which new bible, prophet or furher gave us this "fundamental"(ist) definition?
@nishbrown
@nishbrown 14 лет назад
@7349yt You miss the fundamental definition of "belief". The burden of proof lies with he who makes a claim, not he who denies it. Your fail comes off as astounding humor to those of us who know what we're talking about. Thanks for the laugh.

If we can have spirituality and morality without religion then it would help get rid of the attitude against belonging to a certain religion and sectarianism which leads to violence and war.

She criticized John Shelby Spong for being a literalist? Nice. Yes, I saw the rest of the lecture, she herself is a wonderful speaker and she is very studied on many things. Maybe I should actually read A Case for God. I've read A History of God and 12 Steps to a Compassionate Life, both of which I thought were very good.

It's a shame for universities and UN for trusting her with her bamboozling. The lecture is an insult to intelligence. Listen to her and you will learn how to delusion yourself and others. See how Daniel Dennet debunks her claims. It is pure show business, like arts and sports and she admits it, what more can one expect? This does not belong to university.

Thank you very much Karen Armstrong, This world is a better place with your help... I did find it very interesting that when you answered a question about God at 52:39 in the video. You referred to God as He and His... I struggle with this same question... We all see or refer to God as a Man ... Thank you again,
