Tried Yuzu early access again yesterday, and it did come a long way only 6 mos ago. Luigis mansion is so smooth now and i can run skyward hd. Just waiting on it to be able to actually upscale to 4k-8k without glitches and its perfect.

Man, I've got an incredibly high-end PC - my 6800 XT is twice as powerful as the PS5 I've got coming in the mail next week. The Steam Deck is more exciting than either of those. I've wanted a system like the Steam Deck since I was a little kid. Seriously, my whole life I've looked forward to this. I've been ogling the GPD Win handhelds and the Aya Neo, but the high prices for the performance on offer didn't quite do it for me. The SD absolutely fits the bill. I've reserved the 512GB model and it might actually supplant all my other gaming handhelds.

For people who wants to play games on the go that aren't on switch, and there's thousands of them, Factorio, Paradox Games, Football Manager, Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy XV, Nier Automata, Nier Replicant, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro, Guilty Gear Strive, Borderlands, Mount and Blade, Control, Red Dead Redemption, Witcher 2. The list goes on you get the point.

Streets of Rage 4 and Remake, Forza Horizon/Motorsport, Assetto Corsa, Dirt, King of Fighters, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Code Vein, Yakuza. Those are some I can see myself playing in that thing. Still I do not want to play RTS, city builders, and FPS on this thing.

@@ArchAngelKnights The steam developers have said that it is basically a PC, anything you can do on a PC you can do it on it. This means even using other game libraries like origin etc.. you can even play WOW on it or FF14... like bruh this is insane

I have to disagree with Alec here, I absolutely see the market for this. Will it be as big as Gaben thinks it will be? Who knows - but being able to play local hardware in my bed is vastly superior to streaming. But I think this will also be more appealing to those that don’t use their Switch as often, and I know that Alec is a massive Switch user

I'm not even a PC user and I agree completely. This really is a great idea in terms of middle ground. I'd trust steam to deliver the best possible handheld over someone like Nintendo who needs to appeal to everyone. Valve can focus more on more "serious" gamers, and that population continues to grow.

They’re underestimating how many PC gamers have worse PCs than the Deck. It’s way cheaper than the Switch long term. No $30 yearly online fee, no Switch tax, waaay better hardware AND input (big god damn plus), access to 3rd party marketplaces (includes buying steam keys outside of steam), no store lock-in, easily use SD cards that are laying around everywhere (cheap), access to potential large steam libraries people already have, access to PlayStation and Xbox exclusives, etc. that’s worth $399USD to me. The only downside I imagine is no physical game carts, no optimised game install size for portable and very few first party games. Also I don’t think we should still be explaining portables as gaming on the go. Most Switch is played at home. Even the lite. Portables are just easier and comfortable for a lot of people in the same vein as console gamers hate the idea of sitting at a desktop to play.

Yeah, it's one of the best features in my view. I play a ton of Doom Eternal, and with my Elite 2 I perform just as well as on PC(Nightmare difficulty all the way). Only having two paddles for my PS4 copy is a little limiting, but the full four paddles on the Steam Deck means I won't have to ever press the face buttons. Super-rad. To be clear, I own Doom Eternal on every system but the Switch, heh. I'm proficient on each system, but worst on PS4.

Switch isn't a bad name. It capitalizes on its gimmick. Names that suck are when they did "NEW 3DS" and then effectively had "The New 3DS". That was epitome of lame.

I'm a PC gamer but has been traveling since 2015. This is 100% for me. If I download windows and add GFN I can finally finish metro Exodus in 60fps 1080p with ray tracing on maxed out settings. + Could just dock it to a monitor for keyboard and mouse

@jackthegamer hahaha ha no dude. This thing has a powerful graphics card, 512gb SSD, and 16 Gigabytes of RAM. A laptop with equivalent specs will cost no less than 1200 US dollars. I dare you to find a laptop with 16 gigs of RAM, a 512 or more SSD, and a decent graphics card for less than 1000 bucks. I'll be waiting

this is for me, love the idea of playing some of my 700 steam games on this, sadly I'm in a country that doesn't allow reservations. This would be my Slay the Spire machine right now for example. I'm not intersted in any cloud streaming services, takes too much bandwith.

I hope this does well, I really do, but for me this is a pass. For now anyways. I want to see how well it sells and the long term support for it before I actually get it. I’m afraid it’ll go the way of the steam controller and steam machine, both of which I wanted but was never able to get, and when I did have the money for them they weren’t selling them anymore.

Its a input device that got a bunch of programmable buttons that ecah has a little lcd screen on the button. So it displays what function the button has. So when you say open photoshop it can switch to photoshop tools. Or even folders that you can click around in to get to all the different tools. You can program macros so you can do complicated functions over and over with one button press. Its really useful.

The most important question imho is which is better for specific scenario - many kids on same place going to play video games. This or Switch. I am not familiar with Switch games, but for example Valheim from Steam. You are on vacation with your parents, there other kids , you all play valheim, you play together ingame and offgame. I am interested in this and cant wait to see what will become in future.

The beauty of the such device isn't just mobility but also the ability to mod games which you can't do with cloud gaming services even if they ran perfectly. Also, this handheld would be a beast of an emulation station that can run RetroArch. Imagine playing all your PS, N64, Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2, Wii and others at 60 fps on a proper handheld.

You can download a OS and then run it through that. It's just a laptop with a different shape.

As a person who adopted the ps vita at launch and learned 3 months later it was a triple a door stop, I see the market. Honestly it can play jedi fallen order on high settings at 720P whats its possibilities at 1080P on displayport? This could be the buy of the century for people who cant afford a high end gaming desktop or even mid tier due to crypto. Steam sales are now a thing on a handheld console pc hybrid.

If path of exile ran well on one of these devices it could be a lot of fun because i could see myself plying it on a portable device, that said they are releasing a mobile path of exile product at some point in the next year or so ; I do agree a lot of pc games i play i don't really want to play on portable , the halo master collection could be a lot of fun too

Perhaps it comes down to living situation. I don't always have access to the main TV and I don't have room for a desktop PC. I just have my laptop and consoles. A handheld like this is just right for me.

I personally think that this can be a successful product, i think this really has a chance to interest people that are usually primarily console gamers for Pc and Pc gaming. Steam is such a huge platform with insane amounts of great games but Pc gaming can be intimidating for a lot of people with hardware requirements and the need to build your own Pc but this product basically solves this and i personally always loved handhelds

There's definitely overlap in the potential market segments between switch buyers and steam deck buyers. You have 9yos at one end and Linux users at the other end. Somewhere in the middle there are people tossing up between these two consoles

I always thought the name for the Steam Deck was inspired by Shadowrun and Cyberpunk deckers and the cyberdecks they use. Kind of an ambitious name for their platform since decks were pretty ubiquitous with anyone who was a real tech or gamer in the Shadowrun/Cyberpunk worlds

I haven't owned a PC for 13 years, only have consoles and I often feel like some games are out of reach for me because they don't come to consoles. This appeals to me for the accessibility of steam ecosystem without having to spend 1000s on a PC. I like the portability and the option to dock it as well. Will see how much it'll cost in the UK, but I'm deffo interested.

I think an important thing you guys didn't mention is that the Steam Deck is open-platform, meaning that you could legitimately install whatever you could on a PC, meaning you could install GamePass or a whole slew of emulators on this thing. I personally think that's a pretty important aspect of the machine that makes it a lot sweeter of a deal since Valve aren't locking you too just Steam; they're letting you do whatever you want with it.

As an expediter I spend a lot of my down time at truck stops. My phone, e reader, switch, and other handhelds get a ton of use, but I still prefer PC gaming. This looks like the perfect compromise for my particular use case.

It all looks good, but I’m thinking that something is off about the specs-to-cost ratio. One warning sign I see is the battery life: 2-8 hours per charge. That tells me they cheaped out on certain parts to keep the price low. If they cheaped out on the battery itself, who knows what else they cheaped out on as well to keep that cost down? I for one don’t want to get into a similar situation as joycon drift on my switch lite since this thing also doesn’t have detachable controllers. I don’t want something that could potentially easily break and force me to pay out more money.

I'm a console user, I don't have a PC (don't really have the space) but see lots of stuff on PC that I would love to play. This device could absolutely fill that void for me, maybe not on the move but just at home either docked or in bed or whatever, so personally there's a lot of appeal here for me.

I wanted a switch but I want to play all the old Nintendo games as the last Nintendo device I had was a GB Colour. With the Steam deck I can wipe the steam OS and put windows on it (Gabe said you could) then I can run emulators, have game pass, and still use steam.

Seeing as its valve I'm gonna buy it whenever it hits a good sale. Considering indie games will forever be good I fail to see the downside to this device, you get your massive steam library with it, steam sales, portability and endless indie support and it seems pretty open so that means emulation , multimedia etc. Lets be honest the main reason Switch loses versus this is that on steam sales I can get 10x the games for the same price, Nintendo and their non-existent sales can get bent.

It's not even Nintendo's pricing. People don't like it but they're still buying it all. The issue is more their fetish with exlusivity. To play their games you need their console, and their consoles barely play anything but Nintendo game. So a lot of people buy one, play one or two games and the it gathers dust somwhere. The steam deck has much more games available, and best of all, it's more or less future proof. Indie games will continue to come out for years to come and as long as they release for the pc you'll be able to play them on the deck. Not sure how long it will hold up with AAA titles tho.

You're getting an insanely mobile laptop for $400-600. Laptops with these hardware specs are normally over $1000 starting. The price on this is actually amazing that they could get it so low.

Having complete access to the steam library is massive, and I dont think someone would understand unless you've personally been on steam for years or have a close friend who does. For an existing steam user there is zero additional cost on games, only the "console" itself. For a new user, every extra game they get will then be available on their steam library forever, able to play them if they upgrade their PC to something that can play games. It seems perfect for something to buy for your child when they enter middle school, as they need a PC for school work and will want a games console that they can play at home and at their friends' house. And once they grow up, get a job, and buy their own gaming PC, all their games will be ready to play. It will also be the first hand held with the fantastic steam sales and humble bundles available, so even for new steam users it will be a highly cost efficient entry into gaming. If I had the spare cash, I would get it, because I commute a lot and would love to have a handheld with all my PC games and save data on it.

I want a Steam Deck even though I rarely play games on the go, but as a Linux user it would be interesting to experiment with the hardware and software. Valve has hired extremely talented developers to work on game compatibility, just imagine how much effort it takes to make a AAA game like Cyberpunk 2077 and Resident Evil Village to be playable on a completely different platform that it was originally made for. The feat of basically successfully reverse-engineering DirectX and Windows is just mind-boggling.

Steam Deck 2.0 will definitely be integrated with cloud streaming support I believe. It does not come with 5G support I believe.

its a cool idea and is a great option for many people, but idk if its for me. despite my huge library, any major graphically intensive AAA game that came out in the last 4 years would be unable to run at 60fps on even medium settings, and thats a tad too low for me in a post PS5 era. now, if they have plenty of stock, good reviews, and no switch pro in sight in a year, i will probly seriously consider it. actually, if i can squeeze out high graphics at 30-40 fps, i'd even be willing to consider it sooner, but it doesn't seem like thats the case for now.

The barrier to entry for PC gaming is fairly high from a financial standpoint, and due to recent events more people are in tighter financial situations. So this is coming out at just the right time. It's performance to price is pretty remarkable, and there is no way Valve isn't taking a loss on the hardware. There will be a market for this across the spectrum I think. This isn't a Switch, this is a compact gaming laptop that doesn't break the bank.
