Shubaddi doo di doo di sha-la-la la! This video is all about demystifying the enigmatic figure, Avata Star Sue, for audiences outside South Korea. This highly recognizable flash character's games were hosted on many girls' gaming websites, embedding herself in the minds of 2000's kids across the globe, despite the inaccessibility of the language to many. In this video I thoroughly investigate the Avata Star Sue franchise; all the games, all the webisodes, and everything else I can get my hands on. Full disclosure: s*** gets weird.
!!! The webisodes section contains the following content warnings: Restrictive eating (33:50), racial caricatures (41:10), inappropriate/leering depiction of fictional minors (I'm not time stamping that).
Time stamps:

How do I know Sue? 1:53
What does English-language internet have to tell me about Sue? 3:15

Avata Star Sue: The Web Series - 20:25

When I was little, I was able to understand the farming game. It took a few tries with my 0 Korean language knowledge though. First, you cook the potato fully, start with one type of potato to put in the machine. On the bottom you press the color of the potato you're stuffing into the machine to have the matching french fry container. You put in the number of potatoes the machine asks for, then pull the lever in the top right corner and fries are deposited into the container. This took a lot of trial and error for child me.

I’m not super great with Korean but I’m learning it, and I just wanted to mention that as far as I can tell, “sexy” (direct loanword) is a pretty common style description in Korea and its implications aren’t exactly the same as in America. It means more like a “cool, sleek, and mature” style than specifically sexual, even though it can also refer to more standard sexy styles as well.
@RanAcid
@RanAcid 6 месяцев назад
I'm Korean and I second this, but I also must add that this had been the case in 90's~00's and Koreans have been learning more about the sexual, inappropriate nature of the word. Although the word still has more casual usage than in English, it's slowly been removed from any children-oriented or family-friendly content :)

Oh my god im korean and these were such a big part of my childhood, it's so great seeing western audiences enjoyed them as well!! Here's some extra context from a native speaker just for funsies: 4:20 Actually the pre-teen girl that turns into a magical girl with some type of wand or device(or 마법소녀) was an still is a very popular trope, especially in kid's anime back in the day. Sue could've very much been inspired by Creamy Mami, but my bet is that she was just part of the magical girl trope lol (the ages of these kids in other magical girl franchises were also mostly around 10 and 11 like Sue, it's weird looking back on it but for some reason it wasn't out of the ordinary back then) 8:33 12:54 These are pretty notorious even amongst sue games for being hard LMAO your timing skills have to be pretty much impeccable for you to beat them🤒🤒 I actually recommend watching someone else play instead as that will give you more enjoyment and less pain 10:44 oh god these ones🤦‍♀️ The misogyny, fatphobia and blackface etc etc with a couple of these games and webisodes... oh man😒 These were made back in the early days of the internet but obviously that's no excuse, I recommend skipping them entirely ngl 15:04 The warning that pops up here says you have to put in two types of chocolate. The game is based off a popular sweet called 얼초 that has a layer of strawberry and a layer of milk chocolate, which is probably why that shows up. I used to make so many of these things when i was young, stores still sell 얼초 actually but with banana flavor added now! My god sorry for rambling for this long but I loved this video so much, it brought back so many memories💗

I cannot express how awesome it is to know a Korean person’s experience with the same character! I played Knock off Sue games without realizing it, so it is extremely satisfying hearing both the relatable common western experience as well as the native speaking Korean experience. It adds SO much to this piece of internet history and I genuinely appreciate it, especially considering how many flash games are being completely lost to time.

There was also another character for IBravo called Ong's sisters and an animation series called 개구쟁이 옹스 a reboot called 과자나라 옹스 and some games and a snack called 옹스짱 but I can't really find more information about it. You just unlocked so much nostalgia for me with StarSue! Fun fact: the website actually used to feature Sue a lot more prominently (more so than what Internet archives tell you), so much so that you could think it was her official main website. Star Sue used to be filled with so many flash games (most of them the knockoffs you mentioned), and so did its (now defunct) kiddie counterpart MiniWinx (that was basically StarSue, but more focused on Winx Club Dress Up Flash games amongst others including Sue herself). Back in 2010, the StarSue logo even featured Sue herself.

I do think it’s kind of sweet that the dieting episode had a message about the negative impacts that unhealthy dieting/dieting when you don’t need to has on people and how you don’t need to diet to be happy; a message I wish was shared more to little girls. I was unfortunately a victim of peer pressure and a lot of the “young girls have to be skinny or else they’re ugly or a comedic punching bag” messaging in TV shows, and it resulted in me developing an ED during my middle school and early high school years. So this is kind of heartwarming for me.

About the game Sue Hair Dresser, i've cracked the code on how to finally make her happy. Basically on the first level, you might have noticed that the game shows you a pic of what Sue wants, for a couple of seconds. You might get the haircut right, but the problem is the hair color. She never asks for one dye, she always wants a mix of two different hair dyes to be happy. And the hairdye mix she wants barely ever looks like the pic at the beggining of the game. For example, the first pic shows that she wants black hair (which is impossible to achieve), when in reality she wants a mix of the brown and blue hair dye. You can't quite get what the game showed you, so you better settle for the next best thing. Though i doubt it, hope that helps!

14:07 For Sue Delivery Meals, these are common Chinese-Korean dishes served in Korea. The hearty broth is jjajangmyeon, black bean noodles. The pale broth for the shrimp noodles might be kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) but not entirely sure. The red broth is definitely jjampong (seafood noodles). The sliced vegetables are pickled radishes called danmuji. The confusing last dish is actually sweet and sour pork, tangsuyuk, and that's sweet and sour sauce! I don’t know if anyone in the comments mentioned it yet, but Sue had branded candy! I live in a part of Russia that’s really close to Korea and we actually got quite a few Korean candies here, Sue brand one included. The ones I’m most familiar with are DIY chocolate mushroom kits, where you pour chocolate into molds (like in the flash game!), stick a cookie stem inside and put them in the freezer to set. There’s a Sue version and a Bean version, each including a paper doll/sticker sheet to dress up the character. I used to really like those as a kid, they were neat and as an avid GGG fan I loved to have a piece of Sue merch. They are actually still available at stores.

Trick to the ramen game: add the noodles first, then water, then add the green onions and eggs while the water is boiling. The flavor packet can be added whenever, but i recommend adding it before the water. Serve it to the customer before it burns. Edit: So apparently you can add both the ramen and the flavor whenever as long as you add the rest while the water boils… Happy Cooking!

isn't it pronounced just as "sue" for english speakers? because when koreans write the term super in hangul, it becomes (슈)퍼 (shu/syu) which in english is simply just "super". so by that logic, isn't it supposed to be pronounced as su for english speakers since it is derived from the word "SUperstar"? sorry if the comment came out a bit condescending, I'm just a bit confused 😅

I was not ready to be hit with this much nostalgia, full-on core memory unlocked. I remember as a kid I would play a handful of Korean dress up games and remember Sue but never knew her name and hardly understood what I was doing half the time because of it being in Korean but but her flashy design did stand out and for years I would remember her just never her name. Until now, so I'm happy to finally learn the lore of Sue. xD Also I remember that hair-dressing game and thought it was a normal hair-dressing game where you could do whatever you want but again I didn't know Korean. And I remember kinda when I got a game over of Sue looking pissed at me and I was so confused of what I did wrong, 6 year old me just wanted was a regular hair-dressing game and didn't knew it had to be done in a correct way.

I love Avata Star Sue finally someone outside of Korea who knows it too! 08:48/ 10:30 I get that Sue + Bin are a couple, also Cho Hui + Seok and Lia +Jun. But Eri + Wook seems so random as Wook had a crush on Lia. Also Simi + Hyuk are so weird for obvious reasons sorry. 13:24 This game was my favorite. Here‘s a tutorial for every haircut: For the first haircut cut bangs and the remaining six strands once each. She most likely wants it to be dyed dark blue (mix blue and brown), green (mix blue and yellow) or simply brown. To style the hair choose the big rollers. For the second haircut cut bangs and leave the six remaining strands as they are. She either wants it to be dyed purple (mix blue and red), dark red (mix red and brown) or honey blonde (mix yellow and brown). To style the hair choose the small rollers. Optionally you can add the pearl hair clips to finish it up. For the last haircut cut every strand as short as possible. She always wants it to be dyed honey blonde (mix yellow and brown). To style the hair choose the flat iron. Optionally you can add the rose to finish it up.

sue, at least in the webseries, is canonically 10, as the primary intended audience for it was younger children (as mentioned in the video, the franchise was created by a large snack manufacturing company in korea - and of course, the exposure of snack-related content for impressionable children would mean huge increase in sales). but when turning into her magical idol self, she takes on the appearance of an older girl, seemingly late teens to early 20s, probably because of the chokehold that a korean idol, lee hyori, had on all sorts of media at the time of its initial release. she had a huge influence on basically every trend during that era meaning girls would dress more "sexy" and "mature" in comparison to the prior trends for femininity, being soft, cute, and more "childlike". realistically, makes no sense whatsoever that she looks so old post transformation, but then again she's just some kid who has a magic wand and do a hannah montana transformation and no one recognizes her. for the sue games franchise, i think some games are set in an alternate universe (e.g. the frozen chocolate game where she's broke so she needs to sell frozen chocos for a new dress), whilst others are either at least semi-canonical or maybe a bit further in the future

We loose things to history all the time, and if no one bothered to gather all the information like this then Sue as a phenomenon would probably be forgotten in 20 years. This is my first time hearing about Sue, and it’s so interesting being able to identify exactly what magical girl series she took very heavy inspiration from. You already mentioned the Creamy Mami and Sailor Moon inspo in the video, but we could take it much further. A lot of the plotlines of the webisodes are what were common in 80’s mg anime (which started with Creamy Mami, but I could see influence from Minky Momo and the rest of the Studio Pierrot anime of that era). The webisode designs are clearly very much influenced by the designs of Ojamajo Doremi as well as early Precure. I’ll definitely be looking more into Sue now, I love falling down the obscure Magical Girl rabbit hole!

If you want to watch someone crack the comically difficult Sue games, there's a Korean youtuber named SUNBA who actually has a whole gaming playlist dedicated to her. The videos are hysterical if you know Korean, and still funny if you don't. God, the little ghost girl scene brought back horrible memories lol, I remember watching it and being so freaked out I covered my eyes and ears and asked my mom to turn it off lmao. Also, hard-agree with you on the weirdness of the webisodes. I was too young to be suspicious or weirded out so I kind of accepted them as 'oh I guess those things are supposed to be funny...?' 🥴🤢 I definitely saw some kids in my kindergarten/elementary school absorb that message and re-enact it during recess... um, not a good time. (also known as Magical DoReMi) Sue is really clearly designed as a doremi copycat, she has nearly the same design, magical wand that does whatever she wants, and especially considering how in that very same early 2000's magical girl anime, one season focuses on the witchy protagonists making sweets every episode as a patisserie themed season. super interesting! if anything I would suggest you check it out as it is probably the most wholesome series ever.

As racially questionable as a couple of these webisodes are, I’m honestly a bit impressed about how “progressive” a few of them are. Seeing episodes where Sue shames her classmate for turning down a girl based on her looks, Bin understanding and laughing it off when Sue ends up being bad at domestic chores, and even the episode that shows how bad it is to diet excessively (especially framing societal pressure as a bad thing)? For this era of the internet, I’m genuinely surprised.

(I am also a fan of TheRightOpinion's videos and those breach the 2-3 hour mark easily, and I just love knowing I am going to spend the next few hours immersed in whatever it's going to get talked about.) However I do realize that longer videos take a lot more work, so do what is best for you! Thank you once again for a lovely video, I enjoyed it lots! I also played these games as a kid and I became a pro at the gardening one xD. Those pests had nothing on me!! Weirdly enough if you spend some time on the harder ones like the chocolate factory and the potato ones, you can actually get the idea by fiddling around with the items and seeing what gets a response and such. Unfortunately, the chocolate factory also requires timing, which...well, no amount of translation can fix xD.

zomggg please make a discord server! I would’ve loved to help out with translations and cultural context. I grew up on Sue so it would’ve been great to do a little revisit but this video is still a really great nostalgia trip! :)
