Carl Rütti (b. 1949) is a Swiss composer and organist. His organ suite Vita is based on the life of Saint Fridolin. About this movement, Rütti writes: “When Saint Fridolin was looking for the island he’d seen in a vision, he loved to be by running waters, where he built several monasteries in honor of Saint Hilarius. ... Once the river even helped him in a miracle: After king Chlodwig’s death, the farmers around Säckingen again tried to dispute Fridolin’s right to the island, and fixed as place of arbitration a waterless spot of the river Rhine. In fear, Fridolin cut some trees in order to change the river’s course. In the morning he discovered the miracle: the river’s course had changed to the spot of the island where the arbitrary place was fixed. He heard his enemies on the other river bank praising God and begging Him not to punish them for their boldness.”
