Max Reger (1873-1916) composed the Phantasie für Orgel über den Choral: “Halleluja! Gott zu loben, bleibe meine Seelenfreud!“ and two other choral fantasias in just ten days of September, 1900. Throughout the work, the musical elaboration is in every way connected to the images of the text. The six stanzas of the chorale melody are provided with varied accompaniments determined by the ideas expressed in the text.
(1. Vivace; Maestoso; fortissimo. Theme: Praise and Worship)
Halleluja! Gott zu loben, bleibe meine Seelenfreud!
Ewig sei mein Gott erhoben, meine Harfe ihm geweiht.
Ja, so lang ich leb’ und bin, dank’, anbet’ und preis’ ich ihn.
[Hallelujah! Praising God remains my soul’s joy! Eternally may my God be exalted, and my harp dedicated to him. Yea, for as long as I live and breathe, I will thank, worship and praise Him.]
(2. Quasi un poco meno mosso; Mezzo-forte. Theme: Doubt and Disappointment)
Setzt auf Fürsten kein Vertrauen! Fürstenheil steht nimmer fest;
Wollt ihr auf den Menschen bauen, dessen Geist ihn bald verlaßt?
Seht, er fällt, des Todes Raub, und sein Anschlag in den Staub.
Put no trust in princes! The salvation by princes will never last. Would you build on a man, whose spirit soon forsakes him? See, he falls, the prey of death, and his schemes turn to dust.
(3. Quasi andante; pianississimo.)
Heil dem, der in Erdenleben Jakob’s Gott zur Hilfe hat,
der sich dem hat ganzergeben, dessen Nam’ ist Rat und Tat!
Hofft er von dem Herrn sein Heil, seht! Gott selber ist sein Teil.
Salvation comes to him, who in earthly life has Jacob’s God for help, who has yielded himself entirely to Him whose name is Word and Deed! He who trusts in God as his Savior - See! God Himself is his portion.
(4. Allegro vivace; forte. Theme: God is here with us)
Er, der Himmel, Meer und Erde mit all ihrer Füll’ und Pracht
durch sein schaffendes: „Es werde!“ hat aus Nichts hervorgebracht:
er, der Herrscher aller Welt, ist’s der Treu und Glauben hält.
He, who through his creative „Let there be!“ brought forth Heaven, Sea and Earth in all their splendor out of nothing: He, the Ruler of all the world, upholds the faithful.
(5. Andante sostenuto; piano. Theme: God's comfort)
Er ist’s der den Fremdling schützet, der die Witwen hält im Stand,
der die Waisen unterstützet, ja sie führt an seiner Hand.
Der Gottlosen Wege er kehret in des Todes Nacht.
(6. Molto espressivo; pianissimo. Theme: God is love and peace)
It is he who protects the stranger, who maintains the widow, who supports the orphans; yea, they are lead by His hand. The ways of the godless he sweeps away into the night of death.
Er, der Herr, ist’s, der den Blinden liebreich schenket das Gesicht;
Die Gebeugten, Kranken finden bei ihm Stärke, Trost und Licht.
Seht, wie Gott, der Alles gibt, immer treu die Seinen liebt.
It is the Lord who lovingly gives sight to the blind; the crippled and sick find strength, comfort and light with Him. See how God, who gives everything, faithfully loves those who are His.
(7. Fugue: Allegro brilliante e vivace. Theme: God is Lord and King)
Er ist Gott und Herr und König, er regieret ewiglich.
Zion! Sei ihm untertänig, freu’ mit deinen Kindern dich!
Sieh, Dein Herr und Gott ist da. Halleluja! Er ist nah!
He is God and Lord and King; He reigns eternally. Zion! Be humble before him, rejoice with your children! Behold, your Lord and God is here. Hallelujah! He is near!
