An Honest Protestant's Response to "Jon Adams Ministries" - The Cameron Bertuzzi Announcement

"Jon Adams Ministries" published a critique of Cameron Bertuzzi who announced that he is entering RCIA on a journey into full communion with the Catholic Church. In the comments under "Jon Adams Ministries" video, an honest Protestant whose handle is "Lousy Protestant," posted what I believe is a solid critique of not only Jon Adams Ministries' conclusions, but also the serious problems within the many, varying, and the ever-growing number of "protestantisms" out there. In this video, after some initial comments, I read, word-for-word, the 2-page comment from Lousy Protestant. It's excellent.

There is a glaring and obvious connection between the schism 500 years ago and the cultural schism today. Both are based on ego, a lack of humility, unwillingness to submit to truth and authority. 500 years ago this led to a divorce from church, and today a divorce from reality/humanity. Protestants need to wake up and get back in the game and protect/defend mother church from the modernist onslaughts.

Thanks so much Kenny; what an insightful articulation from "Lousy Protestant." I am a retired Army chaplain and I joined the Catholic Church this year because of similar reasons. Even many who remain seem to be "Catholicizing" their experiences such as Francis Chan's struggle with the Eucharist. Hank Hannegraf's conversion to Orthodoxy was not a fluke, in my opinion. The hunger in the Protestant church is real. I pray for Cameron Bertuzzi and all of our brothers and sisters whom God is calling home to His Church.

@@crossbearer6453 thank you so far - it’s been eye opening and I have to come to some simple yet profound conclusions on a host of issues. So for instance - the conclusion last year was to return to a classical Protestantism and many make that pit stop. It’s closer to the ancient church but I’ve also seen many make that jump only to realize that wasn’t it either - so I am family man with professing children and well it’s complicated. Hi Kenny, I am a former Evangelical. One of the major contributors to my conversion was exactly what Lousy Protestant noted. In practice, every Protestant is their own pope. When we moved to a new city, we had to church shop to find a “Bible Church” that had correct teaching. And by correct teaching, I mean “teaching that agrees with my interpretation of the Bible.” I only realized this when I went to an online forum to get ammunition to disprove Catholicism. I quickly found the Catholics on this forum had much better answers to all the questions raised. It was eye opening to see actual Catholic responses rather than what Evangelicals claimed Catholics believed.

I made the decision to convert last week before Cam announced. I just heard Sam Shamoud did as well. This is my second conversion. The first was in 2017 out of Jewish atheism while believing all gods fictional. Yeshua showed up then. This time it was Blessed Mother Mary. In both cases, I never wanted it prior to it happening. The Protestant church exhausted me. The Word kept me fed til Mother Mary could come, take me home & feed me properly in The Church. Trading a pulpit for an altar table with the Holy Eucharist will be true banqueting with God! 🌸🙏

Thank you for this. I converted in 2014. At the time my youngest son was in an evangelical seminary & tried to convince me I was wrong. I just prayed for him. As his studies progressed to the early church fathers his views started changing. I knew then it was just a matter of time. It was difficult fo him to convert, he became a pariah at school, & none of his professors would write him recommendations for graduate school. In addition his wife did not share his beliefs. He waited for her. I was able to attend their initiation into the Catholic Church, one of the happiest times in my life. I told him about Marcus Grodi & The Coming Home Network. They wrote recommendations for him. He’s now a PhD candidate at Catholic University of America pursuing a doctorate in Philosophy. God is Good❤️ You showed up in my recommended vids so I listened & checked you out, then subbed 😊 God bless you 🙏❤️ PS You might want to check out The Coming Home Network an apostolate to assist Protestant pastors & others coming into the Church. It certainly shook the core of their belief, meaning of those that reacted in such way, maybe even for the better, besides, Cameron did make his homework before making the decision to become Catholic, in Protestant logic, that would make little to no sense, but that's why I think it is certainly not an emotional thing, you have to be very humble and open especially knowing that there will be some backlash, maybe from friends and family, the pressure is also real but in the end when you embrace the fullness of the Truth that is founded in the Catholic Church, it all falls into place. I wish all the blessings in Christ to Cameron and his family who supports him on this way.

You are 100% right about people in Protestant ministries being held there by money and relationships. I was a Regional Director for the largest prison ministry on Earth when I converted to Catholicism. I was in a very well payed position and had built many friendships there. It kept me there longer than I should have. I exited when I was told by someone in national leadership, who did not know I was then a Catholic, that Catholics and Catholic churches are not allowed to volunteer for the ministry. That "we wouldn't want Catholics showing up at anyone's door." However, Catholics in the Northeast make up a substantial amount of annual donations to the organization and that was still welcomed. When it did became known that I had converted I was, what can best be described as, shunned.

Thanks for your comments...and for all your other videos, especially your collaboration with Matt & Ken in the "On the Journey" Series. I'm from the Reformed (PCA) tradition, currently in RCIA. The faith and courage you and Cameron exhibited in your respective conversions are truly remarkable. Your examples have encouraged me in my on-going journey to full communion with the Catholic Church. I think Lousy Protestant is spot on. Doctrinal disagreement was one of the things that got me scratching my head. From the point of view of Scripture, it seemed contrary to so passages, Jn.17:20-23, 1 Cor.1:10, Eph.4:3-6, Phil.2:2 & Acts 4:2. When I was told by my pastor that different views on the Lord's Supper were fine, that it was a "second tier" doctrine, I couldn't help but think of the Ephesians, "tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine." It took a good bit more reading of the Catechism, early Church Fathers and the Reformation, though, to fully understand the issues. One good resource is Dr.David Anders at Called to Communion. For example, in one article he examines differences between contemporary evangelicals and Calvin on baptism and the right of private Biblical interpretation: www.calledtocommunion.com/2010/06/how-john-calvin-made-me-a-catholic/

At one time all Christians were United in belief in: Eucharist, confession, the cannon etc which led to unity in: marriage/divorce, openness to life/no contraception etc. Now “Christian” churches after 500 years of continued schism (countless denominations) reflect the culture, not the church left by Jesus.

The historic state churches of protestantism and also those with a higher ecclesiology that split off from Anglicanism had a view of being in continuity with the historic Church. Though they were wrong, they still took it as quite necessary for that to be the case. This is obviously not the case with evangelicals, and we see that as protestantism has split, each new sect has a slightly different ostensible reason for being that is different, and often contradictory, from its predecessors.

As a protestant I so agree with the comment of ‚lousy protestant.‘ I don‘t know what to do, to be honest. Thought about learning about eucharist and Mary. If these ‚little‘ subjects are cleared I‘ll be off and running 😂. Let‘s see…
@BensWorkshop
@BensWorkshop Месяц назад
OK. The Eucharist. Read Exodus 12. Then John 1:29-34. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. That should be enough (let me know if you need more) to lead you to the idea that Jesus is amongst many other things, the new Moses leading a new exodus from slavery to sin. He is also the Passover Lamb who takes away the sins of the world, and as it says, we must eat the flesh. Read John 6:22-70. (Bread of life discourse followed by eternal life discourse) Read 1 Corinthians 10:14-22. You need to partake of the Body and the Blood (As Saint Paul says). Then read the 3 synoptic Gospel accounts of the Last Supper. This is My Body. This is My Blood. No where does it say symbol. Also see Saint Ignatius letter to the Smyrneans. Very clear about the real presence. Also, it isn't a new sacrifice but a representation of the original once for all sacrifice. Same is true with the Jewish Passover. On May, start with 1 Kings 2:19-20. It establishes that the Queen in the Davidic kingdom is the mother of the king, not his wife. This pattern is followed throughout the Davidic kings, of which Jesus is the final and ever lasting king. Also Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant. See What did the Ark of The Old Covenant contain? See Hebrews 9:4 having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; So... it held the manna, food from Heaven for the journey out of the slavery of Egypt, A symbol of the priesthood and The Word of God. What did the Ark of The New Covenant (Mary, Mother of God) contain? She contained The Bread of Life (Jesus, see John 6) She contained the High Priest (Also Jesus) see Hebrews 4:14 "Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. " And she contained The Word of God, made incarnate. (Also Jesus) see for example John 1:1-4 for example. The Ark of The Old Covenant was so Holy that when someone who was not a priest touched it they died. See 2 Samuel 6:6-7 And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there because he put forth his hand to the ark;[e] and he died there beside the ark of God. Do you think something which only foreshadows the New Covenant and The Coming Of The Lord Our God in The Flesh is more or less Holy? From there a lot of your other questions have obvious answers and I shan't bother writing a full book in RU-vid comments. However you could buy Jesus and the Jewish roots of Mary by Dr Brant Pitre. Hope that all helps.

Wow, thank you for a video that reflects the Spirit and love of Jesus. I've been listening to lots of Catholic videos because I consider them my brothers and sisters in Christ from whom I can learn, but have come across such shocking vitriol and hatred against us Protestants (one even saying that demons keep us Protestant and that many of us are possessed) that it has put me off instead of drawn me at all. There needs to be more dialogue and union among us Jesus followers. I still have loads of unanswered questions that keep me Protestant, heart and soul.

The disunity is by far the main reason for me to also go to Catholicism (I've yet to be formed, which will also be this easter). Unity requires there to be an authority determining what is or isn't binding on the faithful. In theory of course God would be able to provide unity amongst men without such an authoritarian system in place, but in practice it is evident that Sola Scriptura and Semper Reformanda (always reform) from the get-go leads to disunity.
@KennyBurchard
@KennyBurchard Год назад
The DNA of Protestantism is divorce, fracture, splitting, dislocation, and protest. The impulse simply drives it to do what it is programmed to do over and over and over and over and over again. 500 years of history have proved that this approach to reformation is not, and never was the answer to the prayer of Jesus - "that they may be one." When you have more versions of Protestantism every day, there is no other way to see it; it is a war against the prayer of Jesus.

St. Vincent of Lerins “With great zeal and closest attention, therefore, I frequently inquired of many men, eminent for their holiness and doctrine, how I might, in a concise and, so to speak, general and ordinary way, distinguish the truth of the Catholic faith from the falsehood of heretical depravity. “I received almost always the same answer from all of them-that if I or anyone else wanted to expose the frauds and escape the snares of the heretics who rise up, and to remain intact and in sound faith, it would be necessary, with the help of the Lord, to fortify that faith in a twofold manner: first, of course, by the authority of divine law [Scripture] and then by the tradition of the Catholic Church. “Here, perhaps, someone may ask: ‘If the canon of the scriptures be perfect and in itself more than suffices for everything, why is it necessary that the authority of ecclesiastical interpretation be joined to it?’ Because, quite plainly, sacred Scripture, by reason of its own depth, is not accepted by everyone as having one and the same meaning. . . . “Thus, because of so many distortions of such various errors, it is highly necessary that the line of prophetic and apostolic interpretation be directed in accord with the norm of the ecclesiastical and Catholic meaning” (The Notebooks [A.D. 434]).

Yep! By swapping out Peter and His Successors with a book that every person is free (in actual practice, even if some Protestants disagree) to interpret 100% for him/herself, Protestantism has a mixed bag of remnants of the Church Jesus is building (with access to the Gospel), and manifold and ever-increasing and disparate versions of christianity. They have exchanged ONE shepherd (Peter) for shepherds-unending and ever-changing, and ever-contradicting one another with absolutely no way to stop the chaos. It is wired to self-destruct. And that is happening. We are watching it every day.

I’m Protestant and not particularly enjoying the harsh comments. Instead of attacking the branch of Christianity which introduced literacy and work ethics to the world, we should unite. Learn from one another. I’m curious to know what we need to work on, apparently it’s converting to Catholicism. But I need more positive criticism. I respect the Church. I love Catholic writers, art and architecture. You don’t get to hang out in this world for nearly 2,000 years without doing something right.
@cw-on-yt
@cw-on-yt Год назад
Krystle: Actually, I think I can give a non-snarky, and hopefully positive, criticism, like you've asked for. These, I believe, are the things which Protestants, in general, could benefit from (other than "converting to Catholicism," as you say!): 1. Develop a Biblically-based objective principle for identifying the difference between non-negotiable doctrines (what Catholics call "dogmas") vs. things which are mere matters of indifference. Early Christianity clearly had the capacity to distinguish the two: They could tell mere disagreements about topics where God had been silent, from heretical rejection of things that God _had_ revealed. But what about us, today? We all agree that Protestants differ from one another in soteriology, ecclesiology, sacramentology, and sometimes even Theology and Christology! Well, that's bad enough; but, we don't know _how_ bad until we know which of the disagreements are on non-negotiables (dogmas), and which ones needn't prevent us being members of the same church. In fact, we could be more precise: There are some views which are required to be a part of Your Church; some which are not required but are commonly held. And then there are some views which make a member of Your Church "not in good standing"; some which are outright _heresies;_ and some which constitute de facto _apostasy._ To serve as a fully-functioning rule of faith, the Bible needs to give us a model for distinguishing between these levels of acceptability/unacceptability. But most Protestants don't even _try_ to define their church's non-negotiables by a Bible-based objective standard! Instead they just pick _whatever we already agree on_ and say, "That's the list of non-negotiables" ...or, sometimes they look at the denomination-name on their sign and say, "Well, X has to be non-negotiable since, if we allowed Y, we would have to change our sign." These are not, to say the least, well-founded, objective, Biblical standards. 2. Develop a procedure for Church Discipline which allows the Matthew 18 (or 1 Corinthians 5 ) system envisioned by Jesus (and used by Paul) to be more than a "dead letter" in the modern Protestant churches. Whenever there is a dispute between two Christians (especially if each is calling the other a heretic over some doctrine dispute; but also over more personal matters like adultery, marital strife, people refusing to care for parents, etc.), Jesus gives the responsibility to "the Church" to have the final say of adjudication. (In 1 Corinthians 6, Paul is even scandalized when Christians bring such matters before pagan judges in secular courts!) In modern Protestantism, this model is a "dead letter" because Protestants don't have a clear idea/process how to "take it to the Church." Who in the Church has the authority to adjudicate? Surely not just everyone. Surely not just the lead pastor. And if two Christians in two different churches have a dispute, mustn't both churches temporarily unite their judicial structures, to resolve the issue? (Let's presume, as Jesus Himself does, that not every dispute can be resolved at the "two or three witnesses" level.) I think these two items are absolutely critical. One cannot really claim to "be a church" unless one can do what Jesus clearly expects a church CAN do. That includes adjudicating with authority both about WHAT is/isn't Christianity (or, at least, orthodox Christianity, acceptable Christianity, sketchy Christianity, bad Christianity, and not-Christianity) ...and also about WHO is/isn't Christian (or, at least, a Christian we'd let teach Sunday School, a Christian who needs to be in Sunday School, a Christian who's really off-the-reservation, and a person who just isn't a Christian at all). Without those capabilities -- without, in short, doing what a church _oughta be able to do,_ not as a fluke but with well-ordered practicality -- we're just kidding ourselves calling ourselves "churches" and "Christians." I mean, yeah, maybe we are ...but how the heck can we know? When we have no principled basis for distinguishing the truth of the matter? It's notable that the Catholics _do_ have both of these features. They may be awfully lax, sometimes, about using them -- some U.S. politicians come to mind -- but the fact remains that _everyone knows_ certain things which Catholics _have to_ believe. (Does anybody doubt that Catholics are required to assent to the dogma of the Assumption of Mary? Nope!) ...and similarly, _everyone knows_ that a Catholic who gets too far off-the-reservation can be tried for a canonical crime (they call it a "delict") and have various punishments (I think they're called "interdicts") imposed, such as not being permitted to receive communion, not being able to teach their opinions, etc. Catholics even have marriage tribunals for discerning the truth of whether a marriage, as-originally-contracted, qualified as a real, valid Christian Matrimony by God's definition. I know people complain about procedural difficulties with these, but my point is: They _actually have a system_ for such things. That suggests that they're taking their obligation to _be a legit church_ seriously, by the Matthew 18 standard. So, those are some things Protestant churches should work on, IMHO. If the whole Protestant world finds them impossible to implement, we should be asking ourselves "Why is that?" I hope that's helpful. Respectfully, CW NOTE: Full Disclosure: I grew up in Baptist and Baptist-esque non-denom churches; I participated as a church musician in various evangelistic outreach efforts, and worked as a musician, bandleader, and arranger for Baptist, Methodist, and a few other conservative Protestant churches. Like some others here, I dug into church history to get some troublesome questions answered, and ended up convinced I should become Catholic. But I still speak Christianity "with an evangelical Protestant accent," so-to-speak, and am very thankful for the Baptist ministers and Sunday School teachers who taught me to love the Lord and the Scriptures. It is in _that_ sense -- that sense of camaraderie knowing my own roots -- that makes me say "we" in what I've written above, not "you," when referring to Protestants. (I didn't want anybody to think I was denying having become a Catholic; but I also didn't want anyone to think that I was taking potshots at my Protestant upbringing, for which I am endlessly thankful, or at Protestants, with whom I still feel a strong alliance and familial connection. I hope that makes sense.)

This has lead me down the road to Eastern Orthodoxy, though I do not discredit the RCC, I find that the EO has many of its own unique characteristics that can be proven through much study. Most Protestants do not even know their own religious background, so to see someone actually turn to catholicism and then proceed to bastardize him, is not surprising. I see a lot of “he was not firm in his Protestant faith to begin with” too which is dumb.

I wish I had time to address everything in this video. But I don't. So I'll just address two points. 1. It's not helpful to compare theological differences at different points in time without understanding the culture Milieu. It can lead to conclusions which aren't as clear-cut as it may seem. Theological diversity of some aspects within Protestantism doesn't negate the value variety may bring into that diversity. So I don't see the "disunity" as being problematic but of points of emphasis - Baptists focusing on scripture while Penticostism focusing on the works of the Holy Spirit. If the core beliefs are the foundation I can live with different emphasises in worship style or whatever. I'd like to point out that the Catholic church history isn't 🌹 and happiness or even unity. As far as theological viewpoints, not all Catholics are the same - if you wanted to use a liberal verses Concervative scale. I'd say the Greek Orthodox Church is more consistent (but someone more learned can of course can correct me on this sentence if I'm wrong). 2. Conversion stories are always joyful because someone is affirming your belief systems. Nothing particularly wrong for feeling that way. The problem is it doesn't necessarily get balanced by the wider RU-vid videos of all types of conversion stories: Christian to Muslim or Muslim to Christian or atheist to Christian or Christian to atheist etc etc etc. There are a large number of Catholic to protestant stories out there too. So while a conversion brings joy (rightly so) it doesn't prove the validity of their new found position. It's theological ideas not conversions which affirm or deny gospel truth. Some last words. I'm not anti Catholic so don't try that rant. I'm fine with Cameron conversion. I'd stay away from condemning it as much as I'd avoid affirming it. It a neutral sum argument (as much gain as lost therefore neutral nothing gained or lost in the end) from my perspective.

Hello Victor, I am going to give you a very quick and friendly response to your comments. To your first response. Catholics have 21 rites within the Church. Which does open us up to diversity. Even with all of our diversity, we have one thing that unites us all. All 21 rites are united by the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Your second response... You say that Cameron's decision to convert to the Catholic Church should be opened up to a more balanced audience in the comment section. May I remind you that Cameron's RU-vid channel is a Protestant channel. So if anything, you would expect the scale to weigh more to the Protestant side. My humble opinion... We all need to pray for Cameron and his family. I am sure that this decision wasn't easy. The most intimate part of our being is the love of our God, and how we are to properly honor Him, and worship Him. This decision not only affects Cameron, it also affects his family. Their whole world view has just changed. Cameron did not make this decision easily. He publicly did the hard work. You talk about conversions should be about theology, and not on emotions, well I totally agree with you. Cameron clearly followed where the theological evidence led him. He had access to some of the top thinkers from all of these camps. Again, everyone should be praying for him instead of judging him. We all need to stop acting like this is Catholics vs. Protestants. We are not on teams. This is much bigger. This is finding the true Church that our Lord started 2000 years ago, and for Cameron, that is the Catholic Church! God bless you my friend! ⚘️

@@rosiegirl2485 I appreciate your response but I hardly said anything expect: 1. Slamming protestants because they have diversity isn't an effective argument. So I wasn't addressing Catholism but just the poster's cheap shot at Protestantism. I did point out Catholism has diversity but I wasn't making that an issue to denigrate the Catholic church but to just show that the poster's argument wasn't legit (ie so the Protestant church has diversity and so does Catholism this doesn't negate either). 2. That Cameron's conversion doesn't have any significance in confirming Catholism over Protestantism. I just think the celebration of his conversion as a sign that Protestantism is wrong is foolish. My faith is in Christ alone. I don't base on faith in what other people may believe or disbelieve or do or don't do. So Cameron's personal beliefs and journey doesn't validate or invalidate what I believe. I'm not going down the road that Cameron's really smart so I have to agree with him. My faith in grounded in the Bible not him. No I can't support Cameron's conversion to Catholism. If he'd changed between Protestant denominations I'd still not support him. It's entirely between himself and G-d and his family. His new church family should support him. I won't reject him for it but no high fives either. It's not how changing from one's denomination to another works. I never condemned him over his decision though I don't agree with it either on theological grounds (I never addressed this later issue at all). I rewrote my reply to help you better understand where I was coming from. I feel like you read the first reply than made assumptions I never said or implied. I'm really not interested in having a rant about the Catholic church and it's theological differences from Protestantism. Brothers and sisters shouldn't fight about which room as better. We both have to be faithful to G-d and follow the Bible everything else pails in comparison. (Please apply grace - my grammar and spelling isn't perfect.)

I am Lutheran from birth, I see a lot in the RC church that I feel is missing in a lot of Protestant denominations. I also find troublesome things in the RC Church. My best friend lost her faith due to the scandals of the 70's and 80's, and has not attended Mass since. I believe there should be a strong council to make policy, but find the Idea of 1 man being the voice of and policy maker for the world..........that has not always worked so well, but has on occasion been terrific. I understand Cameron has a large channel, but I am tired of hearing about his conversion EVERYWHERE! I truly wish him good luck, and am glad he has found what he was looking for.....but to hear about it on almost every YT channel one would think it's the most newsworthy thing to happen in decades! I liked what lousy protestant has said, and agree with him, I see the protestant churches going woke, and trying to re-interperate the Holy Bible. I have seen disgraceful videos of trans people dancing around the altar with young children watching, I am so close to converting because I am ashamed of things I have seen. (I guess this stems from growing up in a time when we said Prayers in school, and said Merry Christmas instead of "Happy Sparkly Season" People have forgotten our country was founded with a separation of Church and State for sure, but still founded on a STRONG religious belief system......just freedom to CHOOSE what you believe. Now we just erase and cancel history. I wish Cameron and his family all the best and much happiness, but can we stop treating his conversion as unique or like its the actual second comming?

It’s not just one person making policy in the Catholic Church, the Pope makes policy with the cardinals, bishops and other Catholic theologians. While some in the Catholic Church are trying to distort its teaching the catechism is clear and has an answer for almost everything! Anything man touches will be corrupt the Mass and a personal relationship with God are at the center of catholic life! I don’t forget the Catholic Church complied the Bible before the Reformation and removal of several books !

The Pope spends most of his time doing anything but making policy. Most Popes serve their whole papacy without changing dogma.

@@lois2997 I could see that. He really shouldn't be placed too high above any of the other Bishops unless a dispute has to be settled.

I don't see why you need to be divisive with statements like "all kinds of Protestant faiths" and "into the fullness of Christian faith, which is Catholic". This is unhelpful to us all being brothers in Christ and it's unhelpful to Cameron, too.

It is not divisive to acknowlege the reality that Protestants have created (and continue to create) all kinds of new protestantisms every day because of Sola Scriptura. This incessant dislocation from the Catholic Church is the divisive thing. Catholic Christianity IS Christianity in its fulness. I was a Christian before I was Catholic. So is Cameron. He is doing the right thing by ending his protest (that is how to fix disunity) and coming into the fulness of the Faith by entering the Church Jesus founded.

Protestantism is the division in itself: it isn't one Protestant Faith vs. Catholicism; there are hundreds of different Protestant theologies that are antagonistic or contradictory vis à vis each other, let alone Catholic dogma and doctrine. *That's* the actual division.
