I recently had my first baby and had a crazy oversupply! My baby would choke on my milk 2-3 times every feed, by the end we were both covered in milk, and my breasts still felt full. Here's what helped me! - Stop pumping/expressing before feeds; baby is the only one to remove milk, even if you're super engorged - Feed on only 1 breast for 3 hours, then the other for the next 3 hours, etc. (block feeding) - Haakaa ladybugs are okay, haakaa suction cup is not (it's actively removing milk, even if it's less than a formal pump, telling your breasts to make more) - Pump 1x a day, fully emptying both breasts (optional - I wanted to avoid getting mastitis, and the feeling of truly emptying all the milk felt amazing) Doing these things helped me to have softer and more comfortable breasts. I do still leak milk, but only just before/during a feed. Now that my oversupply has been mostly addressed, I phased out pumping in the mornings and now use the haakaa for each feed. I store about 12oz of milk per day this way. My baby remains satisfied from feeding on one breast per feed most of the time, but occasionally will spend a couple minutes on the other as well (even after I've collected a few oz from it with the haakaa). At this point I desire storing away the extra milk, but if I didn't, I would stop using the haakaa and go for just the ladybugs. I hope this is helpful for someone. I felt so lost with all my extra milk, and it was so painful. I also had (still have to some degree) intense neurological pain from the oversupply that ran down my arms and legs and caused weakness, and with my baby choking so much every feed, I knew I had to do something. Block feeding may not work for everyone but it really helped me - I started to feel relief after the first day doing it.
Wow thank you so much for sharing your experience and all this info!! So so helpful. Will definitely give some of these things a try. I'm so glad that you were able to figure it out! Sounds like you're doing amazing - good for you for making it work and finding the best solutions for you and your baby! 👏🏻
You're so welcome! I sincerely hope it helps you. I certainly do not have it all together (i.e. I still have some pain while nursing at 1 month in even with a "good latch"). I wish I could've read a RU-vid comment about oversupply so here it is! I forgot to mention also, I have tried nursing my son in more upright positions, but he usually becomes frustrated and unlatches, so that was less helpful for me. We love the football hold 😃
Built to Birth really helped me mentally prepare for birth too! I’m just loving your content as we are starting to think of baby #2. Motherhood looks so good on you, Beth💛
So interesting to listen to your experience as I would like another soon. I only have the one (15 months) but I read something before about when they both need your attention to sometimes actively tell the baby out loud you'll be with them in a moment as you are just doing x/y/z with Viv. The baby won't understand anyway and it will let Viv hear that the baby isn't always coming first and that you are there for her attention just as equally as with Jude.
I’m soooo obsessed with all your videos! LOVED this one! I’m getting ready for my first baby and I’m only 10 weeks far along right now. Your channels is goals and you’re personality is so captivating. One tip that I’ve heard and thought was really good when dealing with 2 is sometimes saying to baby “wait a sec now I’ll go help your sister” just so that the older kid can also see that it’s not only with her that the attention is being divided. Love your channel ❤️❤️
I have a 17 month old and a 2 month old and I definitely agree with you! Especially the reality that sometimes one of them has to wait for my attention. I wish all the best for you and your family though! This time of our lives with babies is so precious ❤️.
Advice in the UK is not to use retinol whilst breastfeeding. I was gutted as love using retinol and couldn't for the whole time I was pregnant and breastfeeding x
Congratulations again😊 I’m there with you, I have a 13 month old daughter and a month old daughter, trying to figure things out everyday. I feel bad for my oldest daughter because I want to give her the time she wants but I know she is good and I’m so surprised how patient she is been. I just need to keep trusting God, keep asking him for strength and wisdom on this new journey Keep the good work mama 😊😊
I’m 30 weeks with my second baby right now! Love these videos. It’s been helpful to get my mindset oriented towards the newborn days again and also adjusting to two
I’m expecting my second baby and will also be doing a homebirth this time around, I’ve been loving your content, it has helped and encouraged me a lot. Thank you ❤
Loved watching this and am so thankful for the advice. Currently pregnant with my second and Lord willing my first and second will be 14 months apart. ❤
SO MANY CONGRATS! Thanks so much for sharing! I love hearing about your home birth experience and how empowered you felt. 10/10 spinning babies was great for us as well. Re: the oversupply, I know you said you’re using a Haaka when he eats. Idk if you’re using the traditional one or the ladybug one that is more like a catcher, but w my first I’m pretty sure I gave myself an oversupply by using the traditional suction haaka w every feed. After consulting w an LC when my son was 6weeks bc he was struggling w the let down, she recommended cutting down to once a day. That, combined w the regulation that comes around that 6week to 3 month time frame really helped. Hope it improves soon, and in the meantime, enjoy that full freezer! 😂
Thank you sooo much! And I think you're right - the Haakaa collects so much so I've started using the ladybug in it's place to avoid stimulating more production... definitely need something tho because the breastpads don't cut it if I don't want to be soaked hahaha. I'm sure I'll experience more regulation soon!
