After making a video on my history with mechanical keyboards, dozens of keyboard companies started contacting me wanting me to promote their keyboards. I declined all of them except one, who sent me their keyboard in exchange for an honest, unpaid review.

Low-profile mechanical keyboards have never really been on my radar but now im intrigued. As someone who values having a portable setup, having a nice mech to take around would be great since rn i just take a cheap bluetooth keyboard around with me. I really like the aesthetics of this one, but i think i should take a look around since im pretty out of touch with mechanical keyboards lol. Good stuff as always keep it up!

Really love your reviews on keyboards and your opinions on them. I also really like the fact that you use different microphones when type testing unlike other youtubers. Thank you for this review. I've watched nearly 30 of "honest and unbiased lofree" reviews and you are the only one who pays attention to the smallest details. Most of the reviewers evidently impose self-censorship on themselves thinking that if they lose with criticism no one else will ever send them anything to test. And there is something pathetic that, after an "honest" review, its author recommends his discount code.. So he participates in the affiliate program and has a vested interest in getting as many people to buy the product as possible. Most of them direct their only word of criticism toward the cable. This is safe ;). But no one has noticed problems with the precise assembly of the case.

I've always been interested in purchasing a low-profile keyboard considering I enjoy typing on my laptop but I have never gotten around to doing it considering there isn't really that much of a market for it (which goes to show considering the quality of low-profile keyboards haven't reached a point yet of amazing quality or variety). That said I'm intrigued by the Lowfree as it does seem like a step up from most crappy low-profile keyboards.

I'm happy with the typing feeling of my black version (with the tactile switch). The bottom case of this keyboard is literally a paper thin aluminium sheet, it is very easy to teardown by removing the screws on the side and all the dents/ bends can be quite easily removed with some minor bending by hand. Obviously, they are just saving cost here and is quite disappointing. Also, on my unit they do not remove some of the bottom foam in the cutout holes, it would really be better to just take it apart and check.

Note, the keyboard has 1 price, but they charge an arm and leg for shipping, so the "real" cost will be closer to 200usd + import duties (and they also charge vat, even though they are shipping it from Shenzhen). I bought mine during black friday, with a 23.85 dollar discount. Shipping was 37.50 + whatever import duties I will end up having. The cost, for me, with blackfriday discount, will probably be over 200 usd. Which puts it not very far from a HHKB. I hope its VERY enjoyable. If I had seen your review before I bought it, I might have not gotten it.

16:08 Thanks for bringing up the issue with identical key profiles on all rows. I was considering that but now I won't. Because that's the exact worry I had. When all rows feel the same, it becomes very hard to hit the correct key when looking at a game screen. This is why I will avoid XDA profile. You also mentioned making many typos. This has a few reasons: Short travel distance activates the keys quickly. There are not enough gaps between the keys, so double presses are common. And the key surfaces are indistinguishable due to the same keys on all rows. Those three reasons are usually mentioned for typos on these kinds of keyboards. I prefer Cherry Profile. It is angled but not too tall. XVX profile seems very good too, which is angled but wider tops and doesn't have the north facing LED interference issue unlike Cherry.
@jKazej
@jKazej 9 месяцев назад
Identical key profiles have some benefits as well, ie having no distinction between rows will allow you to use them on keyboards that have slightly unusual layouts without having mismatched rows. Personally having used a DSA set for years I didn't have any such issues. It's more of a YMMV than an a fault that will happen to everyone.
@MyAmazingUsername
@MyAmazingUsername 9 месяцев назад
@@jKazej Definitely! I have a Logitech MX Keys, which is all super-flat laptop-style keys. I make tons of typos on it (like 1-2 errors per sentence) but the overall feel isn't terrible. One thing I really like about uniform key profiles is that you can rearrange them to other layouts such as Colemak, which helps when training yourself in a new layout. The only issue is that the F and J home-row keys have "bumps" and will feel weird if rearranged. I have seen a few uniform sets that actually offer optional "home row kits" that restore non-bumpy F and J keys and add new bumps to a few other popular layouts such as Dvorak and Colemak, but such kits are suuuuuper rare. In fact I think I've only seen one. I guess uniform profile also feels more natural for people who use proper typing posture, since that reduces the error rate.

How heavy do the switches feel? Is there a lot of resistance to press down or does it feel smooth?
@Qichar
@Qichar 5 месяцев назад
I have this keyboard, and I love mine. Mine is the version with the black keys and tactile switches. Possibly, they have addressed some of the build issues because I don't have a dent on the bottom of mine. And while the keyboard is quite light, it doesn't feel cheap to me. Frankly, I love the way it looks. As for the typing experience, this is very subjective. I don't like low profile mechanical keyboards as a rule, but I rather like typing on this one. Of course, it is not quite as smooth and wonderful as typing on my daily driver, which is a CIDOO V87. Because the travel distance is considerably smaller on a low-profile keyboard, the problem becomes making the activation force high enough to prevent accidental keystrokes from registering. As a result, I find this keyboard's required force to be slightly higher than I would like; my hands get tired more quickly than when using my CIDOO V87. Still, I own maybe a dozen different keyboards and this one is my second favorite typing experience. It sounds great. The reviewer was obviously trying to avoid saying the word "thock," but this keyboard is surprisingly thocky, especially considering the low profile. It's also a very creamy thock, which I personally prefer. I think this is achieved by having shorter stems on the keycaps, which means while the travel distance is the same (standard low profile), the tops of the keys are noticably lower than if you use standard low profile keycaps. The shine-through XVX keycaps I got to use with this board therefore sound slightly worse (lighter, more hollow) than the stock caps. I love they way it LOOKS with the XVX caps, but I ended up removing them and going with the stock keycaps despite them not being shine-through and having an odd lighted horizontal line in the top quarter. It's strange and awkward when the LEDs on the keyboard are on. All in all, it is my second favorite keyboard, and it is very Mac friendly. I got it to pair with my M1 Macbook Pro because it is light and compact. For this use case, it is ideal. Most of the time when I buy a new keyboard, after a few minutes I am thinking about returning it, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Lofree Flow. I'm holding on to mine, even if there might be better built low profile keyboards out there.
@VladK-1
@VladK-1 5 месяцев назад
I'm also an owner of the black tactile version of this keyboard and I agree with your opinion. Surprisingly it feels noticeably heavier than Boba U4T on my Keychron Q3 even though according to specs it should be vice versa. It feels and sounds decent right out of the box (you cannot imagine how much time I spent modding my Q3 and I'm still not happy about its stabilizers and overall sound). The Phantom tactile switches feel pretty smooth (I have noticed slight steepness only after watching the video; I guess nobody press the keys so slowly during normal typing and, frankly, my hand-lubricated Boba U4T switches have even more steepness when pressed so slowly!). I have 3 switches out of 88 which have significant spring ping sound (noticeable on the backstroke; I've swapped these with keys that I use rarely so it's not a big deal). No other build quality issues though. Regarding the key remapping, I needed this feature and was considered getting NuPhy Air72 v2 instead...however, Windows PowerToys was good enough solution to remap the keys for my needs. On Mac there is Karabiner software with even more sophisticated functionality.

I don't know if you have mentioned it in the past, have you considered using a split keyboard? I am currently working on a 34-key split (wireless) keyboard, and even when unfinished I find it to magnitudes better than what I could ever hope to feel on a regular keyboard, and will be even better when I manage to add tenting for it.

@WyvernDotRed
@WyvernDotRed 9 месяцев назад
On keyboard programmability, on my Linux systems I've been able to remap my keyboards however I like with sezanzeb's input-remapper project. As this service starts on system startup it works from the login screen through even other TTYs, so it's seamless in this way. I suppose that the same could be achieved on Windows with AutoHotKey scripts, though these take more effort to write and might not work on the lockscreen. Ofc. this leaves the BIOS and other machines on the default mapping, if present the Fn key can't be remapped either, neither have been an issue for me.

The main reason why is that I don't have much interest in it as long as I can't do video editing to the same extent I can on windows or macos, as all video editing software are already a complete pain and on Linux DR is essentially crippled.

This review is so strange, because my experiences are completely different to yours. The linear POM switches I have are fantastic and super smooth and plush with no 'steppiness' to them. Also added some O rings and I have to say the typing action is as good as you can get with a low profile keyboard.

@Livakivi
@Livakivi 9 месяцев назад
I don't really think its the best solution, you still can't rebind stuff such as the FN key, and certain programs or games block AHK from working. Its also an additional layer of software-level input remapping, and its going to be your OS setup dependent, in the sense that if you use it on a different device, or if you just decide to use a different keyboard for a bit, there are going to be conflicts. Though, there pretty much is no better solution at the current point indeed.

I kinda of feel like you're not really the target market for this keyboard and that it kinda matters here. To me this seems like it's good for the writer or programmer who works in various places or for the college student with a few bucks to spend on a keyboard. I have two keyboards, my first is a full-sized Cherry brown and the other is a tenkeyless Gateron brown. I like both keyboards but think that they're really impractical for taking anywhere. While the build quality might be lacking somewhat, it seems really well placed for putting in your backpack and enjoying a nice typing experience at a library or cafe.
@Livakivi
@Livakivi 9 месяцев назад
I feel like even if I was, nothing would change in terms of what I'd have to say. I agree that I'm perhaps not the intended target audience based on the marketing, but at the end of the day it's still a keyboard that's (presumably) intended to be used as a tool. For myself, I'd prefer that tool to have practical features such as programmability and good value for it's price that justifies getting it over other competitors, as if it's lacking in those aspects, it will still bother even the people within their target audience. When I worked at an office, I used to carry the hhkb or my DIY keyboard with me daily as well, and I feel like if I went back in time and had this keyboard, my review on it would be exactly the same. It's also why I brought up NuPhy Air as a similar competitor.

I like your keyboard stuff and this was interesting, but i just need mine numpad and every available physical button for my workflow, so this product isn't for me.

@@LivakiviI actually like it since it's easier to find something when I rewatch a video or just try finding something specific in general. Though it must be a hassle to make them. Love your vids btw, I've managed to start learning japanese and have been at it for 2 months now thanks to you.

You're one of the few keyboard reviewers that actually reviews the keyboard and doesn't just make a whole video saying it thocks good.

Aluminum has a similar weight to carbon fiber and plastic. Carbon fiber is still lighter, but Aluminum is not heavy. I have a whole chair made out of aluminum, you can pick it out and fling it around as easy as a plastic kids chair, so the weight doesn't really determine if its plastic or aluminum. The dent in it does make it seem like they didn't use a thick enough gauge though.
