In Part two Shawn provides a detailed walkthrough of creating a custom schematic symbol in KiCad V4.07. Using a datasheet for a 7555 timer as a reference, Shawn creates Pins, assigns Pin labels, and lays them out according to his project. Not every part requires custom symbol creation and by utilizing Digi-Key’s symbol and footprint library you can create your schematic and layout your board much faster.

For version 6.0 things once again have changed a bit: From 2:04 to 5:30 you can substitute in the following: 1. Go to Tools >> Symbol Editor and press ok to load the library 2. go to "File" >> "new Library ..." >> "Project" and create a new Library for the component 3. click the new Symbol button and continue at 2:19 4. ignore everything from 3:35 to 5:30 At 7:40 the new way to create an active low pin is with ~{NAME} At 9:30 click to start drawing, click again to stop At 10:00 click the "Specify a new location for the symbol anchor" Button on the right At 10:25 click Save

You should be aware that the KiCad 5.0.0 windows version of this symbol editor is different. Anyone following this needs to Create a new Library and then right click the new Library in the left pane and select add new symbol. If you try to create the symbol without the library created it will force you to pick a library that is already available.

This is my third time watching this video and I still learned something new, the tilde (~). Because of your tutorials I have become very comfortable with KiCad. I just pushed my own boundaries by taking, an included symbol, and made minor modifications to suit my needs. I turned a switch with a lamp into a switch with an LED without creating a symbol from scratch. Yes, I made a copy to modify and kept the original intact. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Something that wasn't obvious to me as drawing a polygon such as a box changes from program to program. You click once to start the box and then move the cursor. It's not "click and hold". This isn't immediately obvious in KiCad because clicking and holding still draws a selection box, so it seems like it's working until it doesn't keep the box you drew.

it's hard to follow the steps he takes with the icons in kikad. I have linux and I don't have what he has. I read Help where it says that the editing of symbols must be done from those existing in kikad, i.e. "derivatives".
@TranscendentBen
@TranscendentBen 3 года назад
With all of Kicad's changes over the years, the symbol editor STILL has the 'feature' that when you click OK in the Add Pin dialogue at 7:30 the mouse cursor jumps back to where you placed the pin. I can see where some would see that as convenient, but it breaks the User Interface that I've known for 35 years (since the original Macintosh). Who controls where the mouse cursor is, the user or the program? I find it disconcerting, and I know of no other program that does such a thing.

'This slightly chaotic process' - you're not kidding! I came to your channel out of exasperation with the hopelessly structured videos on YT about kicad. I started a project on 4.something earlier in the year and recently updated to 5.0.0. I got lost around 2 mins on this vid then realised you're using an older version. Your context menus are different to 5.0.0. Never mind I can work that out but beginners won't. But seriously what we need is a long step-by-step video on the generic github library. How to d/l it - clone or zip - what's the difference? Where to put it. How to use it and how to mod items from it. I feel this should come between part 1 and 2 because beginners will always look for ready made symbols/components first. The github library is probably the best generic library I've seen in any prog (and is the reason I switched from DesignSpark). Also it's quicker (and easier for beginners) to mod an existing model than starting from scratch. After that we can learn creating models from scratch. We only want to create from scratch when we absolutely have no choice but to do so. What's really important with custom libraries is to save them in such a way that they're retrievable in the event of a hard drive failure. I learned this the hard way - two fucked drives in a week and 100+ hrs up the Swanny. IMO it's best to save custom libraries in, for instance, Onedrive or Googledrive so they're continuously saved in real time.
@jessermejia
@jessermejia 5 лет назад
@@piggybladder it sounds like you need a github tutorial.. getting into git will clear up your downloading questions.. and also provide a place for you to do version control so you won't lose things in the event of hard drive failures. Look for Shiffman's github for poets videos

I totally disagree about the ERC being more trouble than it's worth. It only takes a few seconds to identify the pins correctly, include the correct power flags, etc. Imagine going to the trouble of making a board that had a fault, only to realize later that ERC would have picked it up. Best to start good habits early.

Just a Warning to everyone, If you want to follow this tutorial, be sure to download the old version of kicad. Apparently, the developers like to start over with completely new workflows and layouts and code with each version. Despite updates provided in the comments, Thank you BTW, I still can not find where, how to edit Symbols, but, I have 7 kicad programs open and none of them have this function. I am ow going back to download Kicad 4.07.

As a beginner, I don't really want to be 2 videos into this series and only taught how to make a symbol for the library. There are heaps of free libraries I can download, with the 555 timer in it, including it's footprint. I want to be designing schematics and making PCB's, not designing symbols. This series is wasting my time and I'm moving on.
