In the late 80s/early 90s, metal heroes were huge here in Brazil. I've watched most of them and definitely recommend Juspion (a phenomenon here), Jiraiya, Metalder, Jiban, Janperson (this one I've just finished) and the Space Sheriff Triilogy, of course.
Metal Hero is the most underrated and underappreciated franchise in tokusatsu. They are so different and really incredible. And more realistic in different aspects.
I grew up in France where Japanese shows and anime were and still popular today. During the 80s. Gavan, Sharivan, Captain Sheider, Spielvan, etc...were popular. While many kids like Sentai or Kamen Rider, being a loner, I appreciated the Metal Heroes the most because they worked solo.
I think people really undersell how influential metal heroes, and Space Sheriff Gavan, were in cultivating the modern aesthetics of Tokusatsu. In the early 80s, Toei was still clinched in the old 70s style of making Henshin hero shows. Rubber tire monsters and off designed ishinomori heroes screaming stuff like "skrander wings" and shooting missiles out of their hands was still the norm, even after star wars changed how Sci-fi looks. Gavan utilized this and brought in slick stylish designs to their characters. Also due to being a Japan action club baby, it amped up the action to a massive extent as well as solidifying a sense of realism (as goofy as that sounds) to tokusatsu. There's a coherentness to gavans attacks and his enemies no matter how wacky and weird the story gets. You can see this greatly impacting Super Sentai, almost as if Hirohisa Soda looked at Gavan while making Goggle V and going "what the hell are we doing?". His bio-change-flash trilogy (or as I like to call it the invasion trilogy) lifted heavily from the space sheriff trilogy as well as pulp scifi to create and solidify what would be super Sentai. There's more Buck Rogers in changeman than there is Goranger. I always liken tokusatsus evolution very much to kung fu movies since the two have extremely similar decade patterns and, if Ultraman is comparable to King Hu and Kamen Rider is to Bruce Lee, Metal Heroes is Jackie Chan.
Episode 2 of Juspion/Jaspion is one of my favorite tokusatsu episodes of all time!! It begin in a ghost space ship and ends on a snow planet. The giant monster of this episode appears in the intro, in the first scene and is truly badass. Also, the story has a totally grim atmosphere and the end is kinda sad.
Yes!I have a Japanese neighbor who lent me a vhs with Metalder and Maskman on it...blew my mind.I knew it was VR troopers right away.I really wish we could get these subbed I'd love to watch them all.
Well, it was a syndicated show back then, unlike Power Rangers which was non-syndicated. So it allows for more serious storylines and villains (I mean, the villain of VR Troopers is a human who can assume a monstrous form!)
Sad you didn't mention the amazing Laser Blade sequences themes from the Space Sheriffs. The guy who made it also did similar themes for some mecha anime, Dangaioh and Godannar. Both have used a variation during battle sequences. I personally love Sharivan's the most out of the original, but there was a rendition in one thing that I only saw a clip of, that was definitely my favorite. The clip involved a new Gavan using IIRC the original's laser blade, and did a combo of using Cosmic Harley, from Juspion, and Gavan Dynamic.
God, I feel like i'm old now. I've watched Space Sheriff Gavan back in the late 80's. Followed by Spielvan (which is to me personally have a good storyline).
I didn’t even know the Metal Heroes existed until the Gokaiger/Gavan crossover 7 years ago. Until then, I always thought VR Troopers and Beetleborgs were adapted from random shows. I did know a good handful of info, mostly from the Space Sheriffs, over the years but I enjoyed how much detail you went into. It really helped me sort things out in my head with the shows between the Space Sheriffs and BFighters
Yeeessss, finally Metal Heroes. So badass yet underrated series. I mean c'mon, it's 80s. That screams badass. I wonder if you gonna do review for some series in this franchise. I like to hear your opinion.
Spielban is pretty fun especially with you consider the main villain is played by the wonderful Machiko Soga. In case you don’t know she played Queen Hedrian in Denziman and Sun Vulcan, and Witch Bandora/Rita Repulsa in Zyuranger/Power Rangers
I think an important context to consider when talking about the variety and experimentation of Metal Heroes as a franchise is that it wasn't a franchise as it aired. It was never designed as one or marketed as one. After the "Space Sherriff" series ended Jsupion was intended as a new IP and while there were some sequel shows the Metal Hero stuff was broadly meant to be new shows. It became the "Metal Hero" franchise first among fans, due to broad thematic similarities and staff sharing between the shows, and then eventually Toei adopted treating it as a franchise and the fan name of Metal heroes. But Metal Heroes being a franchise is completely a retroactive thing. Not to say it's not great and there's not a development of it to comment upon. But the lines of what Metal Heroes could be was a bit looser because it was never intended as a franchise as it aired.
Many of the Metal Hero series are in Toei official channel with English captions so go watch the ones you can find so far from what I've seen they uploaded: Space Sheriff Gavan Space Sheriff Sharivan Metalder Jiban Beetle Fighter Kabuto Juspion Winspector Jiraiya Blue Swat Jiraiya
I recommend B-Fighters, cause if you like Kamen Rider You definitely love this series, because all the Heroes is Wearing a Suit of Armor Modelled after Insects like Kamen Rider Does.
Shotaro Ishimori had Writing all the original Goranger of comics seriously at first... However, you do not know that it became a gag cartoon Comic on the way.
It wasn't. As far as I can tell it's some sort of old fan theory that took shape and gets recycled about the toku community as a fact, but there isn't any actual evidence to back up the claim. There are no statements from the creators of Robocop citing Gavan as a source of inspiration. They do talk about the works of Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama, but his style is very different and he had nothing to do with Gavan.
Honestly: A good point is Saban's Beetleborgs. It's hokey, it's stupid, but it's fun and insane and worth every second of time you spend watching it even if only to see what the reoccurring cast of haunted house monsters does.
Another piece of info. But the Philippines also have their on spin off of the metal heroes. The Zaido: pulis pangkalawakan also known as Zaido: The Space Sheriff. Here's the Wikipedia link if you're interested en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaido:_Pulis_Pangkalawakan
"20 years have passed since Dai Sawamura, also known as the second Shaider, destroyed the clan of Fuuma-Lear. The descendants of the said clan, now known as the Kuuma, have emerged to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting universe. Gallian, a descendant of Dai, has a mission to search for his cousins to form an elite group of space sheriffs known as the Zaido. -Anonymous" That's the imdb description haha
Cool seems even better than the big three tokusatsu series. From what I gather this is the 4th biggest tokusatsu series, it must have been too good to be made with the current dwindling talent.
Watching Metal Heroes and then Recent Kamen Rider series made me say "They dont do Tokusatsu shows like these anymore", Heroes have long Human form fights, being transfered to a surreal world but still come out victor, Suits that actually looked like it protects the wearer, and the Question "Are Humans deserve to be protected even if they end up worst than the monsters you defeat?" Thats why Im a Huse fan of the Garo series, yes its mature, but the elements is present, yuo dont need a continues power ups to even the odds, just think of a way, Thats how some metal heroes have overcome obstacles.
Well actually from what I read they still consider those last two part of the series especially since they are part of the Metal Heroes Playlist on the Toei Television World RU-vid Channel.
I havent seen anything metal heroes except the time they crossover with super sentai. But ive always been curious about it. Blue Swat and the rescue ones peak my imterest so i may have to check those out eventually
There all really fun and unique, Metalder has been my favorite might slightly be biased as I’m also a big fan of Kiakaider which it’s based from but it was a fun series with a really memorable villain group. Janperson and B-Fighter while still being subbed are both fun as well
@@MrFalconnpunch Gaims crossover os the only kikaider ive seen. But of i can dind ishinomori's original manga, i would love to read it. I just read the gorenger and kame. Rider manga because theyre finally available in english and ohan theyre good. I want more ishinomori manga available in english now.
@@itsgaimtoduel695 while not physical the Kikaider manga is available digitally on comiXology it’s a personal favorite of mine. The anime adaption is also pretty good Made a video about both the anime and manga a few years ago as well as Metalder
