Ed Colyer Brand new to Virtualbox. Brand new to Ubuntu and anything Linux. Just learning. Age 79. Retired USNavy many years go as an Aviation Electronic Tech and ITT electronic engineering tech instructor. I WILL watch this again I think. BUT, you made it very understandable for this OLD GUY. Thanks a lot!!

Hey Joe, Great Video. I just finished watching the video, even though I've been using different VM products for a while. I use both VMWare Products and Virtualbox because I find the commercial stuff to be good for certain situations and the free stuff to be ok for others. I know this is an introduction Video, I did want to leave a tip for more experienced users who may watch this. There are a set of tools called OVF tool (I think it's called ) that allows you to convert virtual machine formats between different products. I've been able to go between VirtualBox and VMWare Fusion (Mac equivalent to workstation ). Just keep in mind the conversion doesn't always work cleanly so it's sometimes better just to convert the virtual hard drive and import it into a clean VM setup of the product desired for use.

Thanks Joe...I have subscribed to your YT for over a year now.... informative videos... thank you.. I have moved my entire office network to Mint...One comment on snapshots, they can take up a lot of space on one's hard drive.... remember to get rid of snapshots that are no longer required.. I had an issue with VMware with this..:)

OK. I learned a lot. My head hurts. First, I found out how to make sure which Linux distro I'm running, either Linux Mint 19.2 or 19.3. I found both the terminal command: lsb_release -a, and the GUI method: System Settings - System Info. Next, I went back and not only removed the virtualbox-6.1 package, but also there was a virtualbox-dkms package. Then I reinstalled Oracle's VirtualBox. It is working now. Now, the only problem with Zorin OS Core, is that there is no graphic interface, only a command line interface. But, it isn't a problem with VirtualBox, it must be booting up Zorin. No problem, that, I can figure out. Thank you for your patience with me on this, Joe. I'm currently booting up in Windows 7, and it seems like much more a conventional Windows bootup, so, I'm sure VirtualBox is working just fine. Now, at what point do I install the Extension Packages? I don't think that you pointed that out, at least not in this video. OK. I downloaded the Zorin OS Core .iso file locally, and it booted correctly.

Joe, Great video as always!!! Just have one question. I have version 5.0.26 installed with guest editions on my Linux Mint 17.3 OS, with I5 processor and 128ssd. I installed Lubuntu and Windows 10 on VB. Both run great and superfast , and everything works fine except I get no sound in either of these OS. So am I missing drivers for the VB in order for the sound to work? Tried different sound options in Lubuntu but still nothing! Windows I am not sure of Changing sound options. I am thinking it is VB?

Double check your sound settings for the VM's. It interfaces with Pulceaudio and there should be no need for drivers on either the VM or host.

Thanks Joe, I checked settings again and both are set for Pulse and ICHAC97...I did restart VB and now I actually get a message in Windows that NO Audio Device is installed. Tried to go into device manager to update driver and it says there are no drivers for this device...by the way I Snapshot the VB Windows machine. Yes I tried changing to Intel HD but still no luck. I also tried Alsa in Lubuntu but still no luck. I didn't mess with any options until I realized there was no sound in either of the two Virtual Machines. Not really a big deal except I am trying out different distros to figure out which is better for my friends low powered laptop. Short of reinstalling VB I don't know what else to try! P.S. I installed VB (i know its an old version) through the Software manager and extensions through website

The OS is installed on a virtual hard drive. It's just a file that is formatted to look like a real hard drive. It can be confusing but you'll get the hang of it pretty quick once you start using it. :)

Great video, Joe. I have been using VMWare Player for years, I have been considering moving to Virtualbox. I see that they are super similar, so for now I will probably stick to VMware, but it is nice to know I won't be lost if I ever do decide to move. FYI, you can download Win 10 for free still (ISO) from MS directly and despite what one would think - you don't have to pay for a license to use it - it rarely nags you and everything is basically functional (there is an article out here on the details). I hate using Windows 10, but it is nice to know I can use if I HAVE to (basically still just for quickbooks) via my VM. Take care!
@dixielandfarm
@dixielandfarm 8 лет назад
That's the downloadable free upgrade from Windows 7. As for a standalone, like I have, since it has never been registered, I'm not quite sure what is going to happen - they may or may not turn it on where an license is mandatory - or they will leave it like it is now and it is functional enough for a VM...

I'm completely new to VirtualBox and virtual machines in general. I have a Windows 10 computer and have installed VirtualBox and the extension pack. However, I don't see how to add a user to VirtualBox! I'm really confused. You tell us we need to do it, but not HOW to do it. You open a dialog box, but don't show WHERE we need to click to get it to pop up and I don't see any VirtualBox menus on where to do it. An online search hasn't resolved the mystery either. Help! How do I add myself as a user to VirtualBox?? I haven't created a virtual machine yet though. What am I missing??
@EzeeLinux

Linux users need to add themselves to a group on the machine called 'vboxusers' and on Linux Mint you access the groups with the users and groups application in settings.

If I install Linux Mint 19.3 in a Virtual Box on my Windows 10 desktop (has 16GB RAM, 256 SSD, 7 cpu with GTX 1070). How much of a performance hit will I incur running Linux in the box? My understanding is that running Linux in this manner will be in emulation mode. How much slower will Linux be running as opposed to Win 10? Eventually I will dump Win 10 all together and devote my entire desktop to Linux after I become efficient with using Linux. Also I do not want to dual boot and screw up my computer using the Win 10 update feature. I'm 75 years young and I want to exercise my brain...."use it or lose it" :). I find your Linux videos fascinating. Thanks in advance.

Joe ... A suggestion (maybe) for a video is to show us how to access / connect to Windows machines on a Linux machine. You might have that, but I haven't searched yet, but I am just providing feedback from your reply below. Like, in my situation, I have a Linux machine on a Windows network. When, in Windows, I use File Explorer and click on Network to immediately see all of my other machines (wife's and a win7 file server). Windows (immediately) shows all of the machines that have identified themselves on the network. But, in Linux, problem I had below (also could be) that I had to use Nautilius and type "smb://Gbox" to see my machine. Is that how it always is? I don't get any Windows machines being icons for me to click onto. Why can't I just click on left side on the "Network" icon, then click on "Windows Network" subfolder to see all the Windows machines as icon? Then, I'd click on them and type my credentials. Do they appear that way normally? Or, do I have some setting that is not correct? In my Linux machine install, I just get an "Empty Folder" that comes up, when I click on the "Windows Network" icon in Nautilius. If not, then do I need to create mount points (?) or shares-like to see the other machines? Because once I type in proper network credentials for my Gaming-Box, then Linux auto-created a share in Nautilius (looked like a CD-eject button with it) to let me click and immediately go to Gbox. So, that might be something you could walk-through, unless it is already covered in a prior video. Because most people will (most likely) use Linux on a Windows network. Again, thanks for best Linux-learning channel (I think) on RU-vid. You and Chris Titus inspired me to go back & really devote myself (again) to Linux, because I DID NOT have the best experience with Linux in school. But, I performed enough to get my lab assignments done in Gedit and GCC, which was all I needed for my grade. I'm a good student, but I wish that I would have had Mint to learn on. Okay, thanks, I do appreciate reply.

Thanks for the video... I am fairly knew to all this type of stuff (virtualization etc...) I just downloaded VirtualBox and I wanted to try and learn some OS' like Ubuntu, Mint, etc... I have a couple of questions though, how safe is this? meaning if I screw something up in the VirtualBox will my actual OS (Windows 8.1) suffer damage? or the HD or the RAM, etc... I don't know, can something bad happen? Also, how many OS' can I have in my VirtualBox (not running at the same time though) I mean just installed and ready to "launch" and will having these OS' hinder the performance of my laptop? if so, how detrimental will it be? I have a simple Asus Laptop with 16GB of RAM and an Intel I7 3630QM and if it matters it also has a 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 635M... Thanks for the help and I apologize for the stupid questions!!! >_

I use Linux Cinnamon Mint. I have VB running a Windows 7 guest after a little fiddling. It's the inverse of your example setup here. My source was the deb that came from the Oracle site you showed, and I added the extensions. I use a Mac Mini, so I'm not sure about changing anything in the bios as you can when booting a regular PC Big problem though: Can't access USB flash drives nor Linux HDD files nor USB printer or scanner. It does see the USB keyboard and trackball just fine. I looked and saw to add my user name to the Vbox user list, which I did via the Terminal. I can drag & drop files from the Linux side to the Windows side and back, but that's unwieldy when I'm writing stories or my novel. I'd need to access the same folders from the guest that I can on the host. I'm already added to vbox users. So, that's not my problem. But, maybe I have to do the same thing in Windows? I set up a VB Shared folder. It shows up on my Linux desktop, but I don't see it when I'm in Windows. Until I can find a way to fix that, I'll have to stick with Wine and PlayOnLinux. (This "guest"- "host" thing reminds me of Westworld!)

Does putting Linux on a virtual machine have the same problems as putting it on a dual boot system? My current intention is to put it on a separate drive without a dual boot. Which is the better alternative. I want to learn Linux, and put Widows in my rear view mirror.
@EzeeLinux
@EzeeLinux 5 лет назад
It depends on what you want to do with Linux. If you're just learning, A VM is a nice place to start because it's easy to get rid of if you don't wanna fool with it anymore. Linux on a separate hard drive is still a dual boot but at least you're not working with partitions as much. Be careful. :)
@theolamp5312
@theolamp5312 5 лет назад
@Joe Collins - When I said put it on a separate drive, I intended to disconnect the other drives when I install Linux, so that it wouldn't see the MBR. Or, will Linux see the MBR when the other drive is re-connected. The detail and help of your video's are invaluable. Thanks, Ted

Do they not give you some useful info in the part where you say blah, blah, blah? Usually, VB will give you a Cameroon to run. If not, re-install VB and see if it works right the second time. I'm not sure what is going on but it can't hurt to try and if that doesn't work the next place to look would be the VB forums themselves. Just searching you error messsage on-line may bring you the right answer. Just copy and past into you browser and see what comes up.

@@EzeeLinux Useful? Well, maybe. The first time I tried to boot Zorin OS Core, they did say that they tried a "Camaroon", something that they grabbed from the repository? But, I forget the name of the file that they said they would try. Two more things that may be causing the problem. One is, prior to running the latest Oracle VirtualBox version, I installed the repository version. I did an apt-get remove virtualbox and it seems like my repository version was uninstalled, but, I imagine, just like Windows, there are always bits and pieces of the old program still installed on my computer. The second thing is, I tried to upgrade to Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3, and don't think that my computer upgraded successfully. I see that several people on EzeeTalk had difficulties with this Upgrade. I again, followed your steps in you video. In the end, it could not find the multimedia or language files to Upgrade. Linux kept telling me that there may be something wrong with my Internet connection, but, it is beyond me. Not to worry, this is about my general experience with Linux. You just have to have 20 years of experience under your belt in order to install anything that isn't from the repository. Well, similar to Windows I guess. But, Linux is too steep a learning curve for a veteran Windows user like myself.

Why to use dhcp when you can use static ips and find your computers by name just setting the hostname inside /etc/hosts?? .)
@EzeeLinux

My router gives static leases. I switch distro too often to bother setting static IP's for the machine. :)

Joe, can you help / suggest what to do? Okay, I'm really "eating up" your content on Linux. And, I've done Vmware in past, but I got into Virtual Box from your channel. And, gosh, I love it. I think VB is better than VMware ... and that's hard for me to say. It's simple, fast, and really easy to understand & use. Okay, I installed Linux Mint 20, and I love it. On my machine, the full-screen works pretty dang good -- not gaming good, but learning Linux good (no great). Yet, here is my problem. I am fighting to get my Linux in VirtualBox to be seen on the network -- no more, for it to see other machines. I am in Win10, and I turned off my AVG's firewall and all virus checking, and I did same with Windows Defender. But, Linux can't see out. I've got it on Bridged. And, I uninstalled VirtualBox and reinstalled, which seemed like things worked better second time. Maybe some stuff didn't get installed first time. But, this would really help me move along in Linux studies. If not, I can do other things. One of the other things is learning permissions, but I hit a roadblock too because I was trying to get Samba going right. Samba seems easy enough, but how it is working on my network -- makes it feel clunky. But, I was practicing learning Samba, and I did get Win-machines to see the Linux box by turning on SMB 1.0 in Windows features. And, I had to really monkey with Samba, because it's not that easy. Also, I wish there was a simple Samba graphics tool to help. Just click, click, click and shares are what you want. Maybe also tell us of a simple Samba share GUI. Maybe, I might just go bare-metal on a machine to learn Linux, and just remote from my Lazyboy over there to the machine. I am in living room on big Tv (not small monitor), so it is a great environment to learn. And, your tutorials are helping lots of people see a way away from Windows. Yes, I love Windows, but I hate the FOOTPRINT. Kills me. But, with Linux, I can have small memory & small drives. And, world is my oyster. So, if you can help or anyone help, do let me know. But, maybe, I'll figure it out by time I get replies. But, that's hardest thing so far is getting the network right with VIrtualBox.
@PoeLemic
@PoeLemic 4 года назад
Maybe, let me monkey with it. But, have you had problems with seeing your Linux VM on VirtualBox from network or from your VM seeing out onto your network? Like I said, it's frustrating because when I open Nautilius, and click Windows Network -- there is nothing. So, I don't get it. But, let me fight the fight and see if I can solve it.
@PoeLemic
@PoeLemic 4 года назад
Okay, Joe, I think that I figured it out. I did two things that helped: 1) fully uninstalled VB (again), rebooted, and reinstalled it. I'd done it before, but I did it again. Also, 2) turned off Windows Search, because someone said that it can interfere with things ... Don't know if that was part of it, but directory listings are super fast now; and, my Explorer used to take few good moments to open, but now that has been stopped. But, it seems to work mostly this time. Seems like something was wrong with the Internet Driver or something. So, seems to work now.

@@EzeeLinux Joe, thank you for a very quick reply. [Let me take this comment to the topic where you might see it quicker.] And, in the past, I didn't know that you really read all of these comments and tried to help people, like you do. I was more impressed with a newer video where you explained your approach. Anyway, let me take it to a new chain.

My main computer is an Apple. For several years now Virtualbox causes severe crashes on my host system. Luckily for me I have Parallels Desktop for Mac, that although being a paid alternative has greater optimisations and speed.

Downloaded 64bit virtualbox after downloading the extensions. Installed vb with gdebi as 64bit, but the extension manager shows only 32 bit when configuring the settings. Also the number of CPU won't let me change from 1 core to two (shows that I have 8 cores available; physical cores equal 4). Rebooting. I shall return.
@EzeeLinux

You need to turn on virtualization in the BIOS for your computer. :)

What @Joe Collins has suggested is the right approach. Please feel free to ask me / us if you get stuck anywhere. Once Virtualisation is enabled in BIOS of your Laptop/Desktop system, you should be able to see 64 bit versions available for your guest OS.

Hello. I am just few minutes into the vid. and it looks like you are installing it inside of Linux/Ubuntu operating system, rather then in Windows. Is the installation same for both of them? I do not thinks so. It would be useful, if you put that fact(Installing on Ubuntu) into the headline, so the people do not waste the time. Thank you.

I installed ubuntu 16.04 to my VirtualBox and boy, i hated the distro. removed the distro from VirtualBox after about an hour. Used to love Ubuntu above all else, 10 years ago. Now, even though better systems expand from Ubuntu, I can't stand the Unity and all its irregularities.
