Giuseppe Castiglione was a missionary artist and Imperial Painter in the Qing court who served three generations of Chinese emperors for 51 years. His cross-cultural style skillfully blended Western realism with the rich symbolism of Chinese art, granting him a place in China’s art history.

Some of the paintings in the video might not be by Castiglione. The famous portrait of Kangxi (beginning of video), for example. Also worth mentioning is this 1699 portrait of Kangxi. It's in a Europeanized style, painted 16 years before Castiglione arrived in China. Supposedly, Castiglione's first recorded work in the hybrid style was made in 1723, during Yongzheng's reign commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kangxi_Emperor.jpg

It's really beautiful when Western art and Eastern art mix. Are of Indo-Europe and the Sinic-World developed in such isolation to each other, but when they come together they're absolutely stunning.
@ChristianJiang
@ChristianJiang Месяц назад
Well if you’re using broad categories like this, then you’re actually going to see way more contact between the indo-European and the Sinic worlds! Take the Tocharians for examples, who are Indo-European and lived very close to the Chinese. To this day, a lot of words in Chinese actually come from this Indo-European language, cf. 蜂蜜 (honey), which comes from Tocharian and is therefore related to European words such as “miele” (Italian), мёд (Russian) and “mead” (English)! Even 狗 could be related to English “hound”! This, and many other links.

The Jesuit mission to China in the eighteenth century was absolutely amazing - China was introduced to the latest western music, art and science. It is reported that a baroque orchestra was sent to China and the emperor was so totally captivated by the music that he ordered them to play on and on and that his own Chinese musicians learn the techniques. This is the era when the latest astronomical and chronological discoveries made in Europe were introduced to China and is on the record that the traditional Chinese calendar was "reformed" by a Jesuit priest - the traditional calendar that is still used in the Chinese world today!
