AN OLD FRIEND A NEW COMPANION! | Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 2 Reaction 

Despite how different the style is, Frieren is actually directed by the same guy who directed Bocchi the Rock. In-fact, Bocchi and Frieren are his first and second directing jobs respectively, and the guy just knocks them both out of the part in entirely different ways.

Something I really appreciate about Frieren is that the animation doesn’t NEED to be technically special in any way, and it is sometimes, but the REAL strength of the animation is how artistically and illustratively special it is in its shot composition and color composition. So good.

I love that the writer didn't put too many words into explaining everything that's happening or that has happened. "It didn't have to be magic." "But you chose magic." While we see a flashback of Fern having a beautiful moment with Heiter because of her learning magic. The show didn't have to say out loud that they both like magic because of their loved ones. They themselves "somewhat" like magic. But each of them had heart-felt moments they will never forget because of magic. What magic can do and has done for other people is what makes them pursue magic. That's why we have a seemingly mundane spell like one that cleans and removes rust from bronze statues. And the anime shows us without explicitly telling us that it's for cleaning statues of Himmel or of their adventuring party.

13:15 A lot of anime nowadays are basically 'what happens when the main character completes every side-quest before attempting the main quest?' And then you get super-OP main characters like Eminence in Shadow and Faraway Paladin. But Frieren is the opposite - the main quest is already over. If anything, we're watching a sequel to the first game, or a DLC or something. But along the way, we get to watch her do every side-quest she missed.

Like Hiluluk said "No! A man dies when people forget him..." So Heiter reminding Fern her parents can live on with her as long as she keeps the memories of them alive as well is beautiful. It also plays into Frieren's memories later on.

If you pay attention, all the little and useless spells she picks up are used, primarily for her friends and allies. They don’t always come right out and say it but it shows that Frieren, despite how she acts, deeply cares and listens to those she spends time with.

Every episode ends with the song asking "are you alright?" NO I'M NOT ALRIGHT I'm crying my eyes out T_T

I swear, it was this episode that showed me we're having a slowburn adventure of Frieren falling in love with Himmel postmortem. They're just so god damn precious together, but Frieren just had to be an Elf

Notice how time is measured by how many years it has been since Himmel died. That's how impactful his death was to Frieren.

You know, it's funny that you're going through a series that really is at it's core about someone that is grieving their loss of a dear friend right as I had lost my Uncle. My dad and I joke and talk about him in a light heart as that's how he'd want to be remembered. So this series even more now just hits so close to home it brings me to tears. Cherish what you have people.

There's a small detail in this episode that warms my heart. The two odd job spells that Fern points out are a spell to clean statues up and a spell to make grapes sour. On their own, those are funny little gimmicks to show that magic can be used to small things, and going around collecting them is a funny little hobby. Later in that episode, she cleans up a statue of one of her companions, and there are many statues of them throughout the world. Later still, you learn that another companion, Eisen the Dwarf's favourite food is sour grapes. They're small spells and meaningful details.

It's ability to subtly move the plot forward is masterclass One detail this episode that I didn't notice my first time viewing. When Freiren tells Heater "She can be called a proper mage," she is actually elegantly telling both him and the viewer that Fran broke the rock before they outright show the hole. Because in Ep 1, Heater told Fran if you can't break the rock, you can Never be called a proper mage.

I can confidently say that I cried for every single episode of Frieren. I’m so glad you decided to watch this because it’s really revived the whole Fantasy genre in my eyes.

Frieren is great, you will either cry of sadness that one character passes away or you will cry of happiness for the wonderful memories of them.

I love this series since the manga. It shows so little expressions on the face, but at the same time you'll feel so many expressions in it. It's just, amazing

When you've lost so many friends... When you're the sole survivor in many group photos... When you're still getting out there and having regular adventures... This anime just hits different. Glad you're enjoying it.

I love how this has gotten me to rewatch Frieren from the start

thats the reason I love the themes of this show. Memory. Memories are happy, fluffy, and joyful. But they are also sad, angry, and any other unpleasant feeling. We look back and often the memories we remember best are our failings. The things we failed to do, were to scared to do, the things we missed, where we just screwed up. And thats what I find so beautiful about this show. We almost never see that theme, and it is so wonderful to see it explored so thoroughly here. So get ready for some feels. Some deep, happy, sad, wonderful, and powerful memories.

I love how himmel is clearly the main character and this is frierens sequel spinoff. But we dont get to see the "original" if that makes sense.

Alicia is usually the first to pat herself on the back but she is doing a good job predicting what's going to happen and understanding the show. Never took the time to watch the show myself so I appreciate you reacting to it.

I inmediately fell in love with this anime to the point it's already my favourite. I'm so glad you're going to react to it.

This is basically the grandmother of all "found footage" movies. The one that started it all. Everything that came afterwards, be it Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity or whatever, all traces back to this movie. I know the "don't show what happens and let the imagination do the scaring"-kind of horror isn't everyone's cup of tea, but back then as a teenager this was the most frightening movie to me. I never gave much of a shit about slasher movies or movies where the makers obviously mistook "horror" to mean "gore". Stuff like this right here or the Thing, or Lovecraft stuff is what gives me goosebumps.

Hey don't know if you already know, but every name in this show is a german word wich in some way represants the character. For example "Frieren" means to freeze/ to be cold, "Heiter" means cheerful, "Himmel" means sky/heaven and "Fern" means far/distant.

I knew that you'd love Frieren the moment I got the vibe of this anime, so glad that you're reacting to it

Alicia's closing comments got me thinking. I think this show values our learning to understand what an event or action means to a character rather than that character's reaction to the event/thing. And that's pretty cool.

I never noticed Himmel's pose for the statue in the brief cut-back is Boa Hancocks "ultimate looking down on you" pose. He's literally pulling a "you will do this because I am beautiful"

Man, I just realized that the guy whose tomb in which they found the grimoire supposedly on immortality is called Ewig. "Ewig" means "eternal" in German. But what about the other characters' names? Himmel is "sky", which goes well with his hair color, and the meteor shower. Heiter means "mirthful", and we see him laugh a lot and enjoy life with good alcohol. Eisen means "iron", which is appropriate for an iron-clad dwarf. Frieren means "to freeze", maybe she's an ice magic specialist? EDIT: And Fern means "distant". That's a nice touch of the author to have looked up actual German words instead of German-sounding ones for the sake of "exotic" names.

Don't worry, the big magic moments are coming. But you're right, they are not usually the focus of the show, which is mostly about the little things that happen in between the big moments.

I feel like heiter stopped drinking so that he could stay with fern, who had just lost her parents to a war, as long as possible, and when frieren showed up he took the opportunity to entrust fern to someone she will never have to lose. Heiter was a good man.

As someone who has gone through a lot of loss in life at a early age. This anime hurts. I feel the same way frieran feels. Regretting that you didn't learn more about them. Didn't spend any time listening to stories because you didn't understand how little time you have with someone till they're gone. I had to hold back tears watching this while doing stuff. This anime is so good yet so painful (⁠╥⁠﹏⁠╥⁠)

You should definitely watch "maquia: when the promised flower blooms" it's an amazing movie all about a young girl who takes in a baby and has to learn how to be a mother. I think you'll absolutely love it.

Not to mention that the almost every single character is a lovable baby.😊 The other cool detail is that every single character and ability is named for a real life author and their works.

Even though the season is not over yet, I think this might be one of my fav anime of all time. I could tell early that it was going to be good, but now it's over half way it just keeps getting better. It's so refreshing not having everything be so similar to everything else. No isakai, or the whole show being about when they will "get it on" or something. Just really great characters, animation and story telling.
