Why does EA have a history of really tasteless marketing campaigns? It's especially ironic given that their original mission statement aspired to fulfill a classy, positive vision of what gaming could be.

The problem with EA is that it's no longer run by electronic artists. It's now run by stuff suit corporate executives who know less about gaming than the couch I'm sitting on. On top of that they consult marketing departments who know even less about gaming than they do.
@FaintAcrobat
@FaintAcrobat 9 лет назад
Larry Probst, EAs Executive Chairman has been in the videogame business since 1982 so he already knows more about the industry then you or anyone on this comment section does combined. Their CEO, Andrew Wilson, has been at the company for 14 years and worked on the biggest selling videogame franchise in the world, FIFA. Peter Moore, the COO was the president of SEGA of America before going to Microsoft, becoming the VP of the gaming division helping in pushing the Xbox forward and overseeing the launch of the Xbox 360. In 2007 he went over to EA as the head of EA Sports. These are industry veterans that know their shit. Hell, Probst has worked in the industry since before you were cum.

FaintAcrobat I still stand by my statement. EA is still not run by electronic artists anymore. That is abundantly clear. Larry Probst may have been in the business a long time, that just means he's now completely out of touch with his target consumer. Regardless he's still the clueless corporate executive I mentioned before.

metgredko I think a big problem here is share holders, every CEO has to justify him/herself to share holders, these shareholders are not all gamers but they are all investors and all investors care about is the bottom line. they chose to invest EA because it was (and still is) making a lot of money. however they often pressure the CEO to get better returns (and such release games with tones of DLC) or to cut risk (such as release a game before it is finished - you get to see if the market will buy it and if they don't well you did not waste too much money on bug fixing).
@LordBloodySoul
@LordBloodySoul 9 лет назад
Matthew Walton Yeah. If EA shall survive this era, they have to step back 15-20 years and regain the standards of old, evolve them and rise to their heights once more. However, that will take the tarnish of pride these stuff suit corporate executives have and they will never give it up if it gains them money.

@unamed1142
@unamed1142 9 лет назад
What happened is that their owner turned into a money grabbing 5 year-old with no regard for quality or dignity. FIFA games are all identical and bring down the progression of the Interactive medium by two years each game. The Dante's inferno marketing alone sent the medium back by ten years and sparked ALL of the religious opposition to video games as well as increasing the parental opposition by tenfold, thus slowing down the progression of the Interactive medium to a tenth(WITH ONE GAME). The actual game Dante's Inferno was seen as proof by most people that games couldn't be professional by belittling a well known piece of literature. This sent us back ANOTHER decade. They prevent any creativity arising by constantly buying out smaller studios that provide quality games(something that EA despises in a game, it being worth buying) which brings us to a rut that we cannot escape from, this rut is designed to allow low quality games by EA earn millions while innovation is stamped...

Devin Dykstra No, it’s actually far worse. Thanks to EA, for the first time in what feels like a long time, governments are actually gearing up towards imposing regulations upon the industry. Because we can’t regulate ourselves. But the government doesn’t truly know how our industry works, and they will do more harm than good. It may not be much longer until our favorite past time gets looked upon in the same light as gambling, and we see a decline or and outright crash. And should that happen, it will be entirely EA’s fault. It was they who pushed the line on what they can legally get away with. It was they who treated their customers like cattle, only good for filling their wallets. It was they who ruined what should have been a great game and turned it into a hot button topic. And it was they who only offered up hollow apologies, sloppy fixes, and empty promises that they will not stoop to that level ever again. And that’s only the one game. I haven’t even mentioned the other stuff like SimCity and Dante’s Inferno.

@DragoniteSpam
@DragoniteSpam 10 лет назад
Well, it goes both ways. There are good AAA studios, and bad Indie games. We just have to decide which ones we want to focus on. And on that note, given how much they've wrecked in the universe of video games and how bad their products are anyway, people really need to stop focusing on EA. Unfortunately they're apparently such a powerhouse that may not happen for quite a while.

I personally think, that them buying companies and stabbing them in the back thus destroy good franchises sucks much more then their marketing. Seriously Origin, Pandemic, Bullfrog...all died because of the buying and backstabbing them later on. No more, new Ultima, Wing Commander, Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper, SpellForce....thank you EA for ruining studios and still holding the rights to them ...Electronic Arses.
@ElectromagNick
@ElectromagNick 10 лет назад
Not to mention that, a while back, they funded a sequel to Bethesda's best selling football game only to stab them in the back, cut the funding, and steal the intellectual property and physics engine to create a little thing known as Madden, now worth, was it billions of dollars? Giving absolutely no royalties to the creators of the physics engine and the other major assets they stole to create the franchise. Yeah. Real dick move, EA.

This is, in my opinion, the main problem with the game industry. People see games as a product, like any fruit or toy, instead of as a form of art. They make them not to make something beautiful but to make money. Thats why we have so many CoDs. There is no real solution to this since in the end companies will always be more inclined to what nets them the most cash in the easiest manner so they will never change.

Inventor Raccoon I understand why they have all the bugs, the worlds are so huge and you can do so much stuff that they can't really test it all unless you want them to sit on the finished game beta testing it for a couple of years. My favorite part of their games is the depth. You don't really see that much in today's games that are made to be played through once or twice and then traded in when the player buys a new game. I mean the really good stuff that is buried deep and you can tell that the game company spent a lot of time making the game and decided to throw in a bit of fun.

+stardude692001 "Except that Skyrim bullshit am I right?!?!" I'm just imagining one of those nostalgia-nazis sputtering out between long labored breaths from within their basements. Bethesda is a great company. With great games, but the "older" community (basically from Oblivion and/or Fallout 3 backwards) is utter and total elitist garbage. Granted I don't blame Bethesda for it but I figured it must be said since you brought them up. I do agree though that they are very consistent with good content provided the community weren't such asshats. Thankfully with their games becoming more approachable to a larger variety of people the elitists' voices are starting to get trumped by the newcomers to the developer.
@stardude692001
@stardude692001 9 лет назад
Ant the Gord There is a line. I find it hard to get into the fallout games before 3 and though I played morrowind I found Oblivion to be a much more fun game. I don't like Skyrim because of the way the menus are laid out, it feels shallow. I will admit it is a good game but not one I like just like how I will admit that about Marrowind. Looking at the three is like looking Shogi, chess and checkers. I think chess is the most fun of those three as well since it is easy enough to learn the rules but complicated enough that I can use strategy rather than blind chance. And No it is definitely not a good thing that the core audience is being ignored for a chance at larger profit. It's never a good thing no matter what the medium is, like when Queen, Boston and Kansas got pushed off of pop radio so they could make more money off of Disco.

I know by this point a lot of viewers only know EA as the hated company they are today. But what he said about EA's beginning is true. The founder of EA, Trip Hawkins, always seemed to be seeing the industry about 10 years down the road. He looked at the simple space shooters and maze games of the era and knew in his gut that we would have amazing experiences decades later like The Last of Us. The 80's were actually a pretty magical time for EA. They used to put their games into big vinyl record-sized sleeves (like the M.U.L.E. case mentioned) because they wanted them to be viewed in the same way as music and other forms of art. Hawkins left EA in the early 90's to form 3DO, which itself was a couple of years ahead of its time and suffered for it. EA was never really the same after he left it. The accountants took over and it has all been about maximum profit at all costs since. I do understand that they are a business and need to make profits but it seems like they keep hurting themselves for it when they really don't have to.

They will not seize to amaze us at just how low one can stoop to make a quick buck. This company is not salvageable. I sincerely hope it consumes itself in its unsustainable, reckless chase after all the money in the world, and on its ashes, better companies rise. Let EA milk dry all of their precious little whales, stretched thin among rising scumbag competition. Let them lose it all when gambling for worthless digital rubbish finally becomes illegal. Let them realize at the very last moment that all of the quick buck opportunities are gone, and they have nobody to back them up, and nobody to sell their shit to anymore. Let them fall. The problem is that EA really sees its audience as such: Immature 13 year old pimple faces that won't ever move out of their mom's basement. And bluntly, their games even reflect that attitude, not just their ads. Look at their portfolio. Then tell me which of these titles would actually fit a mature gaming population that care about character depth, an intriguing story line and subtle bits of information that you might only really grasp after playing it a few times through, with different angles only becoming evident as the player understands the various viewpoints of different actors, or at least different angles to view a problem? None of their games offers anything that's deeper than a kiddy pool. Hell, most of their games are essentially the same as the game released a year earlier with the main difference being the year's number slapped at the end of the title.
@redspindle8231

+0x777 Well, I only agree partway. A game doesn't necessarily need an engaging storyline to be good, and sometimes shoehorning story in can hurt the game. Just look at NFS in the last 14 years, sans Hot Pursuit 2010 and Most Wanted.

+0x777 That's not entirely true and you say like you didn't play many new games of them. That's some deep shit, just one problem, EA doesn't give the faintest e-ff about it's customers. It's objectives are quite clear, make as much profit as posible with the least effort (time and money). They know what they're doing, if they did care about their customers then they wouldn't mess the poor bambies who seek help from customer support and get threatened later with a perm ban to their account if they continue to pursue their dilemma (which is called blackmail btw which is a crime no matter whatever their TOS contains). And lastly, the reason why EA treats it's customers like poop is because the customers let themselves get treated that way. For example the relationship between EA and it's customers is akin to the relationship between an abusive boyfriend and an abused girlfriend, EA abuses it's customers, milks them for every penny they can get (proof is those truckoloads of DLCs, pay to win multiplayer as well DRM) and those bambies keep coming back, buy another game,play, get horrified at how much it sucks, go lick yours wounds for a little while then restart all over. So, in conclusion, it's not just EA's fault, it's also the customers fault for being idiotic enough to buy their god dam game expecting for a positive change. If people want EA to change (zero chances by my standards) thn they got to start deciding with their wallet. - To all people, as well retards who buy stuff from EA only to complain later, and repeat the same thing over and over. Grow an e-ffing brain or don't complain at all.

Perception is a key idea here in EA's big issues. Their marketing and money bag divisions are definetly repulsive, but if we look at the company as a whole through those terms, it does no one favors. I would actually like to know who was on the marketing team for EA during those radical marketing events. I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same people.

Like, EA is doing nothing with their power, yes, they cannot risk invent new, but they need upgrading old. Which they aren't doing. Giraffe only focus IS bad in long term. Yes, OOO DAT GRAFICS OMG GOTTA BUY, but then they are dissapointed and go out of the possible buyer list. Which, in theory, decreaces the sale of next games. Gabe Newell suceeded firstly with developing an a legendary game, then getting money of sales with an a tool which was developed to be a thing to run internet on a mod of HL, which is CS, TWO MEN developed a game that evolved into the game in the eSport list. With that in mind a thought of 1990-2004 was the middleage of gaming. PS: Sori for my bad english, it's not my mother(/father)land language.

I get the vibe that EA's management is simply very ineffective. Surely the people who build the games have heart for the business, but those aren't the same people who market that stuff. I think the people who marketed the games simply only gazed at ten minutes of gameplay, took the most shallow idea they had and tried to sell that to the audience. If they'd have worked together with the people who designed the game from scratch, they'd know what the game is all about, what it tries to be and how the audience should perceive that. I'm not saying that the designers should do the entire campaign for the game, I'm merely suggesting that the marketeers should have a good conversation with the developers before they start campaigning. After all, nobody knows the gaming community better than the people who develop the games.

After playing Dragon Age Inquisition I can see how EA may have the budget, but not the "magic". I compared DAI to Witcher 1 & 2, although these games would be grouped as similar; you can see and feel the difference. DAI doesn't look bad and got me to spend many hours on it, but I just never felt like I was in its world. DAI makes you feel like a boss in a gang, go over there you four and F*ck that guy up. If the situation ever got too hot, you ran like a coward and left your posse behind; don't feel bad though, you don't have to deal with the guilt of having them perish for they will magically teleport to your side after you run far enough away from the action. The Witcher series by contrast pulls you in and makes you feel that you are not only in the game's world, but you have influence in it. Your choices shape the near and distant future of the story, which gives you a sense of ownership over your adventure. The combat feels like a live-and-die by your sword (and magic) situation, not a mob beat down. Plus the Witcher series (especially the third game) has that re-imagined look at classic monsters and myths, the specters aren't your typical misty ghosts, vampires look like actual man-sized bats, etc. Now I hear terrifying rumors that EA wants to purchase my Oasis-of-good-game-developer CD Projekt Red !!!!!! NO ! We can NOT have that. I wish Project RED would let us know how much money they would need to NOT get in bed with EA; I know for damn sure I'd chip in and send money to them.

I'm going to say. That letter was written by someone driven. I don't understand why someone would want to be anything other than that. I mean, the things that are bestsellers are the games that bring something new to the table (with the proper marketing). Epikification Probably around the same time they monopolized the entire sports game genre and realized that they could make more money by churning out poor-quality games as fast as possible while exploiting everyone involved (the consumers, the athletes and even their own employees). Any time I've heard an employee at EA talk about working there, it's a horror story. They take bright-eyed young devs fresh out of university, steal their innocence and crush their dreams. 14 hour days, no overtime, impossible deadlines, a blatantly abusive management and an utterly hostile work environment (EA is all too ready to point you to the door for any gripes). EA is run like a sweatshop and controlled by people that view their employees and customers with the same gentle grace of a 19th Century Southern plantation overseer.

Not even a 19th century slave owner. See, even when black people were considered property, they were still valued because they were extremely expensive. It's directly after slavery was abolished that you're thinking of, where black people were technically free but they couldn't find work anywhere except for farms, and they were paid so negligibly that they had to owe their employers impossible amounts of cash, forcing them into basically the same thing as slavery except this time, they were literally thought of as worthless because they could be replaced for free if they died.

I have to agree, EA Games pretty much went Jimmy Kimmel on their buyers, albeit I do live with my parents, I'm not a 12 year-old in the basement, I'm a 20 year-old with 2 jobs and graduated valedictorian from my school, and if EA reads this. Show your buyers some respect, we're adults, and not only are you treating us like children, but committing federal crimes doing so! Selling an M-rated game directly to minors, as the Dead Space 2 "Your mother will hate this" ad campaign was not only, as many people on the comments section here mentioned, tacky and distasteful, but was in direct violation of the M-rating it had clearly received by that point. I know I'm being hyper-legalistic, and honestly, I believe that with the proper sit-down and discussion for it, even games as horrible and taboo as Dante's could be used as teaching tools, not only for design, but to encourage people to sit down and read the Divine Comedy, for one example, or Dead Space 2 and 3, or Spec Ops: The Line to teach children the real-life horrors of PTSD and other brain disorders, and help explain to children of soldiers why they're fathers or mothers are different now that they're back and having to re-adjust to civilian life. I'm probably just being hopeful, but I can see even horrible games being used to help teach subject matter in a way that will probably get through to more kids than a book or a movie will. I know I went all over the place and I apologize for any bad grammar I may have used, but this is my two cents, take it as you will.

I risk starting a flamewar by posting this, and i know the marketing on Dante's Inferno was really, REALLY bad, but i still think EA's marketing on Dead Space 2 was the worst. "The game your mom wouldn't want you to play!"? Excuse-me, Mr. "I have great ideas about marketing" marketing team, but i don't need my mom to aprove the games i want to play. You need MY APPROVAL to get me to buy your game. I'm a grown man, with my own job, with my own income, i play games because i like them, not because someone told me not to. I buy games with my own money, if i like them, otherwise i use my money on something more useful, like a gift for my mom on mother's day. Of course she wouldn't like violent, gory games, so we have an unspoken rule: I don't bother her with my games, and she won't bother me with her new age spiritualism and channelers (Which i don't like, BTW). I played Dead Space 2 despite this terrible marketing, the only thing the ad achieved was to annoy me. On the other hand, I've never played Dead Space 3 due to the terrible choice of adding microtransactions in the game. A single player story driven game! That killed it for me. Despite making a donation in the Humble Bundle Origin, i've still not played this game. EA's like the Midas king with a twist: Instead of turning everything into gold when EA touches it, it turns everything into a well known organic compound mixture...

FaintAcrobat Yes, I do actually. It's simple psychology. Micheal Bay makes terrible movies with no substance other than explosions and sexual jokes, so therefore I laugh at him and refuse to watch the things he makes along with discouraging anyone I know from watching said productions too. Same with companies like Activision and EA. There is no substance and it seems what they do are deliberate insults to the gaming industry. Like selling half of a game(or less) at full price(or more) and then selling the rest that was chopped off in other severely expensive segments. What Activision did to Destiny is a prime example of this. So stop your flaming and take a look around at this industry along with the consumers of it. If EA doesn't get better soon and stop focusing solely on money to instead focus on quality, they will collapse horribly and I will support their downfall, just like any other corrupt and exploitative company.
