An Overview of a 1950's NuTone 2-Note Door Chime Power Unit Assembly

NuTone actually made more 2-Note Door Chime Models in any given decade than they made 8-Note Long Tube Chimes.
These 2-Note NuTone 2-Note NuTone Chimes came in a wide variety of designs - including Bar Chimes and Long Tube Chimes
Many of these Chimes share a common Power Unit design -
In this Video I show how this type of NuTone Power Unit is assembled and I detail the dimensions of the design - which helps in restoring them to be functional again

Ha! I cleaned the plunger and tube on my 1955 model (same power unit), with some isopropyl, and it worked like a charm. Before the chime stopped working entirely, it only rang one chime. What a delight to have "Dinggg-Donggg", rather than just "dink". Too bad that after 15 years here, I'm getting ready to move. Oh well, thank you for the video!

Thank you! After watching your video, I serviced the exact same power unit with confidence yesterday. NuTone Movel K16 8J3. That doorbell hasn't worked for the last 20 years. But now, good as new! I didn't have lighter fluid handy, so I used my wife's fingernail polish remover.

Hi VideoDoesNotLie: Well Done in getting your vintage NuTone Chime working again. - As a note, finger nail polish remover is basically acetone - I'm not sure the effects it would have - especially on the varnish coated wire used for the Chime's electromagnetic coils - Chris

I recently replaced a 1950 Nutone like that with an electronic one. It still works, if you would have any use for it, you can have it for the postage.

Is that piece the transformer, or just part of the chime box itself. I want a new ring video doorbell but not sure where the transformer is to my Nutone 5763 from the 1970s.

Hi sandy: it is not the Transformer, it is the Power Units Assembly for the Chime. Your Transformer is mounted remotely somewhere in your house. - Chris

Do you service these? Like if I were to mail you mine, you go through it and send it back to me? I have this exact unit, appears to be completely intact. Also, do you know how I could test it? Like is there a device that would supply 16v to the unit? Or does the transformer take in 120V and convert to 16V? I have photos as well.

Mine buzzers somewhere when not ringing - should I be concerned?

Hi James: Yes - Be Very Concerned - Constant, low-level buzzing or humming means that the solenoid is being constantly energized. These solenoids are Not designed for continuous operation. You Should Disconnect the "Trans" Wire Immediately. The most common source for this problem is a bad outdoor Pushbutton - Chris

@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thanks - I did that and also checked to see if the original wiring was correct. You guessed it - it wasn't. The back door was wired wrong to the transformer. Now I got 2 camera's hooked up and no humming. I did put in a bigger transformer to handle the bigger load and 2 resistors on the NuTone. Thanks for your help.

Great video and very helpful! Any advice on how manufacture the replacement tips for the plunger unit? Or something I can purchase at the store that will suffice? Thanks much.

Hi Steve: I use small diameter fiberglass rod which I sand and taper to fit the plunger - You can also use plastic rod Different type of materials use for the tips will alter the tonal quality of the Chime - Chris

@@SteveCheung9 NuTone use wooden tips in the 1930's. Wood tips will soften the sound noticeably - if you use wood - it needs to be a hardwood - Chris

How you identify nutone doorbell transformer the house was build in 1958 ?

Hi Hinh Cao Dalat: That's a difficult question - Just because you have a NuTone Chime, doesn't mean they used a NuTone Transformer or that the Transformer hasn't been change at some poi in the past 62 years. A whole house search may be required (including attic and basement) to find the Transformer - Chris

I have what looks very much like this chime mechanism, we just bought the house and I am not the original purchaser of the device (I do not see a name at all on it.) My problem is the dooorbell chime box buzzes when the common wires are connected. I have them disconnected and of course we have no doorbell. Can you help? or guide me to a video showing repair for buzzing door chime box?

I have the exact same model assembly as shown in this video. Took mine apart and turns out the rear side spring was too long, the plunger was missing tips altogether and the front side spring was slightly crushed at the end. Do you happen to sell parts for these? Looking to get new springs and tips for my plunger.

Thanks for this video, I have this chime, by any chance do you know what are the power specifications of this chime? I'm thinking of getting a smart doorbell but if possible I want to continue using this chime

Hi Rekha: Your NuTone 2-Note Long Tube Chime uses a 16 Volt AC Transformer rated at a minimum of 15 Watts (VA). If you're going to add a WIFI Door Camera - You should continue to use a 16 Volt Transformer but increase the power to at least 30 Watts (VA) - Chris
