Thanks, your instructions helped me repair a stuck plunger in an old two-tone Rittenhouse door chime. I found a Rittenhouse C8806R Oakmont chime on ebay, and knew that it wasn't working from the photos. Your step-by-step approach was enlightening, and it works great. The most work I had was honing out the cylinder in the solenoid using a wooden dowel and 1000 grit sandpaper and lighter fluid.

Regarding the red tipped hammers that strike the tube gong, I was missing one, it had snapped of years ago I guess. I drilled it out, and then got a plastic golf tee and whittled it down and pressed it in with a small hammer. Worked perfectly!!

Thank you for the video. I just finished repair of an identical 1940s chime after gaining confidence from watching your video. However I found it saved time for me to avoid unsoldering the wires and instead gain access by removing the back of the case instead of the front. Otherwise the other steps you suggested worked fine for me.

Hi David, The potential problem with leaving the wires connected to the Terminal Strip is - when working on the unit, the wires could be stressed and break off where they are soldered to the Terminal Strip - This would make the wires short, then that would have to be dealt with - Chris

Thanks again so much for making this video. I was able to successfully repair my circa 1940 NuTone door chime! Would not have been able to do it without your videos, this one in particular. Replaced two plunger tips and gave it a thorough cleaning. Someone had clearly oiled the assembly somewhere along the years and it was really gunked up. It's been something I've been meaning to look into fixing since we bought our house 3 years ago and am so happy to have it working again. Really appreciate you.

Thank so much for the helpful video. From this clip, I now know that my Nutone K-28 is missing the left plunger's tip: just "ding" but no "dong" :( . I will look for a solid black wood (ebony) chopstick and work from it. :) - An

Nice vid ! Now I have to take a look at my doorbell . Lighter fluid is naphtha , one of the least destructive solvents . Here in LA,Calif. they outlawed naphtha but you can still get lighter fluid .

Hi LRoy: Interesting that you can't buy naphtha in your area. Where we are located (S.F. bay Area) it is commonly available in automotive paint stores. - Chris

Great video! It also appears that you didn't replace the rubber grommet on the 2-way plunger in that last step?
@northsideservicecompany3567
@northsideservicecompany3567 6 лет назад
Hi Jim: Wow, nothing slips pasts you guys. . . You are correct - I removed the grommet because it was to thick and it prevented the plunger from coming out far enough. I'm looking for another solution - I need a grommet with thinner shoulders and a larger opening - Chris

Can't thank you enough for the fantastic cleaning video of the NuTone Model 2 Note chime. Mine has been in the attic for 43 years and the wires connecting it to the electric supply have been waving at me in the living room wall for just as long. I'm so excited that there might be a chance I can restore it to use. HOWEVER, I seem to be missing the little red pins at the end of the chrome plungers. Perhaps this is a model that didn't have them originally, though I doubt it. How do I replicate those little pins? Tiny plastic tubes the size of pipe cleaners? Thanks. Gary

Hi Gary: If your Chime Power unit is like the one in this Video - it certainly had plunger tips. New tips can be made from plastic, fiberglass or carbon fiber rods. - Chris

Really well done video and explanation. I have a Nutone K27 E110 and recently the front door bell won't ring, but the rear one still works. Is it common that, in this case, the top or front doesn't work? What are the chances that the one solenoid is the problem? Also, what kind of solder did you use? Is there another way to secure the wires besides using solder? Since it may need periodic cleaning, it would be nice to not have to desolder then resolder over and over again. I love the sounds this old chime makes so I'm hoping to do what you did to restore it.
@northsideservicecompany3567
Hi user-hy4tk9wmj6: You really can't say any problem is "common" when you are dealing with a 70 +/- year old Chime. Before trying to guess what the source of the problem is - some testing will likely revel why the "Front" is not working. All you need to do it switch the wires between the "Front" and "Rear" terminals and try the pushbuttons. If the "Front" now works, it's not the Chime - it's either the pushbutton or wiring or both. In the past 25 years or so, I've never had a Power Unit like your with a bad coil. More commonly, the plastic tips fall out of the plunger, so there nothing to strike the Tubes. Since the the Solenoids would only need to be cleaned, maybe ever 2- years - soldering is the best choice. Using some standard 80/20 lead solder. Any other method of attachment would be incorrect - Chris

@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thanks Chris! May I ask what temperature soldering iron did you use? What wattage of soldering iron do you recommend? I don't have one and I'll need to buy one to undertake this project. Do you like the Weller brands?
@northsideservicecompany3567
@@TPaul-ts5sh I use a Hakko FX951 Soldering Station - set at 750 degrees. For this type of work, I use a larger, chisel tip that has lots of thermal mass. I started off with a Weller WES15 Soldering Station (I still have it) it always worked very well - Chris

Excellent video! I have a couple questions: Do you recommend using 1 inch diameter dowels to tie the chime hanging strings for this type if chime? Also, what do you use as a power source when you bench test this type of solenoid?
@northsideservicecompany3567
@northsideservicecompany3567 5 лет назад
Hi echanos: The exact diameter of the dowel you use differs from chime to chime, not all of the tube hanger loops are the same length. Most use either 1" or 3/4" dowel. I use my bench top AC Power Supply during the repair of the Chime - I use the correct type of NuTone Transformer for final testing - Chris

Hello thank you for the informative video. I have a question. I'm hoping to hook up a video door bell actuator yet maintain my chime. The video door bell actuator requires 16VAC my current service to the chime is 10VAC. 16VAC is a big jump up, can these solenoids handle that voltage?
@northsideservicecompany3567
@northsideservicecompany3567 3 года назад
Hi Jason: Yes - These Chimes can easily work on a 16 Volt Transformer - Chris

Hi jose: The NuTone K16 is a fairly standard 2-Note (ding-dong) Door Chime - Your Ring Camera needs to be installed as the Ring Instructions show, when you're connecting it to a mechanical 2-note Door Chime - Chris

Will cleaning my plunger stop it from humming?
@northsideservicecompany3567
@northsideservicecompany3567 5 месяцев назад
Hi m4[anther: No, No, No - Your Chime Power Unit is humming because it's partcially turned on - Disconnect it immediately - Before you burn up one of the colis (this is an irreplaceable item) - The reason it is partcially turned on is usually a bad Pushbutton on the Exterior of the house - or from a wiring problem - or, if you recently add a wifi Door Camera and it's not installed correctly - Chris
@m4panther
@m4panther 5 месяцев назад
@northsideservicecompany3567 I disconnected the front DB and it still hums. Rear chime is fine. Could the transformer be the culprit? Or a short ?
@northsideservicecompany3567
@northsideservicecompany3567 5 месяцев назад
It's not the Transformer - If it were the Transformer, the Rear Chiem would do the same thing - It seems like it's a wiring problem - Time to check the wiring - Chris@@m4panther
