So do you know of any seed company that sells the editable Cranberry Hibiscus seeds that still has some in stock? I found seeds for the Roselle no problem but tried several companies last night and they were either out of stock or the ones they had in stock, listed as "Cranberry Hibiscus", did not have the words edible in the description and I want to be sure I am growing an edible type.

@@Tie.you.Up.orTie-you-Down i harvested green bell peppers and it tasted really good and sweet. It wasnt that really big when i harvested it, not as big as what you can get from the grocery stores. I started planting the seed around April 10 because I was up North. Probably if I planted earlier, i would able to get full size of bell peppers. I seen my neighbor here with so many plants of bell peppers and she got good sizes of peppers just like from the grocery stores. Anyway i make my own potting mix (peat moss, cow manure and perlite). I also use organic granular fertilizer and bone meal. I also watered my plants with fish fertilizer when they were still young.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, your successes and failures and gardening journey. I have never gardened a day in my 52 years and somehow ran across your channel last summer. I am just "down the road" from you (in IRB/Seminole). You gave me so much inspiration and courage to just "go for it" and start a small garden. I did just that, last August. As you can imagine, for someone with zero experience, my results were all over the place.. However, learned so much. Regardless of crop success, it was the BEST and I am HOOKED! I love that you’re honest about both success and failure. There are a number of gardening ‘rules’ that aren’t hard and fast because they’re affected not just by microclimates, but also gardening style, and seeing how things work (or not lol) for you is tremendously helpful. As someone that has grown over 30 tomato plants in a short season cold climate, I can tell you that most tomatoes are fine down to about 40degrees, though they’ll def slow down to a crawl. Too many days of those temps will also do some initial stunting unless you use something like a low tunnel or wall o’ water to warm them up a little. Also many of the Russian variety tomatoes have better cold tolerance. Black Prince may be a good heirloom to experiment with on winter season. That was always a star performer for me previously, though I have no idea how it’ll do here. It’s cold tolerance may make it heat intolerant. Might be worth a shot next winter, though. I believe it’s an indeterminate but it’s a reasonably well behaved one. lol Let me know if you want some seeds. I have plenty. 😊

I use the same seed trays from Epic, they are absolutely amazing and durable, and easy to clean. Can lift a full and watered tray with one hand and it won't buckle!. And because they don't cause plants to get rootbound, you dont have to worry about holding off on transplanting. I forgot I had a sungold seedling in the back of my garden, and it was in a 4" epic 4-cell, and it was able to produce 3 little tomatoes lmao. Also, I am also starting watermelons literally today!

I just found this video and I agree with you about "breaking the rules". I heard it said over and over and over again that carrots should not be transplanted but instead be "directly sowed". I can 100% say, that's bunk! I did it and it worked out just fine. I sowed seeds in plug trays and then proceeded to plant out those plugs and every single one has grown just fine. Also, I hate thinning plants by cutting or pulling and discarding them because I think that's a waste. I break apart my carrot plugs and separate the carrot seedlings and transplant them too and haven't lost not one. Something else I saw on UF/IFAS'S website was that it's not possible to grow asparagus successfully in FL. Of course I found that out after I planted my asparagus seedlings, yes grown from seeds, and was eating asparagus on mother's day the following year so, people should definitely have fun with their gardens by breaking the rules. I believe the rules are a general guide for us and less hard and fast you must do it this way type thing. The beauty of a garden is the freedom we have to have a blast by experimenting so we can find out what rules are right for our microclimate.😊

I've noticed that I don't have very good luck with GMO seeds, but have great luck with hybrids. For instance, I tried to grow lemon thyme and lemon basil, both of which had alot of pest issues and really struggled to thrive-whereas the traditional basil and thyme did great. However growing sungolds and San Marzano tomatoes, sungolds did fantastic and had almost no pest/disease issues, but the San Marzanos had a harder time with pest pressure and disease overall.

Celery certainly is a diva. I broke the rules last year, started them from seed late in the season but didn’t thrive. They didn’t die either so I ignored them other than watering. They grew under the canopy of pepper plants and thrived well into the heat of early summer. This year I accidentally sowed celery in my Towrr Garden aeroponic system and they germinated beautifully. I removed them from the Tower, planted them in grow bags and they are thriving. On a separate note I love the seeding pots you are trying out. Bought mine last year and love the quality. I assume you’re referencing the blanching that means wrapping the stock while it’s growing rather than the blanching as in boiling it for a short period of time. Now I don’t blanch mine because they are so tightly packed with other plants that the stalks are not getting much sunlight anyway, but if you had a lot of room in your garden between plants, it might be beneficial to do that, so that they maintain a good taste and texture

Please share what you do to ward off the squash vine borers/ pickle worms. I'm south of Sarasota and west of 75, probably just on the fringe of zone 10a. I get great germination and plant development. the male flowers come in extremely plentiful, but as soon as female flowers start and fruits begin to form the little green worms appear and I don't know what to do about them. I spend hours picking them off by hand and squishing them. I don't even wear gloves for this anymore. I kill them with my bear hands. I want to stay pesticide free, so I just end up losing the battle. This is my first year gardening and I've had some successes, but all my squash/cucumber types have failed. I only harvested about 3 cucumbers, 6-ish zucchini, 1 yellow squash, and zero of two other varieties of squash. But I love all squash types so I really want to grow them successfully! Please help if you can :)

There is an organic spray called spinosad. It’s really the only thing I spray at this point and I only spray the fruit and that does the trick. If you would rather not use anything, your only other option is to cover the plants in insect netting and hand pollinate. I like spinosad, because you only have to spray it once a month and it’s an organic product that is basically a bacteria that causes the worms or softbodied insect worms to stop eating, which essentially kills him in a couple days.

It’s a dwarf cavendish. It’s definitely better to grow in ground if you can but it’s been doing really good so far, in the pot.

I have a very similar climate to yours so I got you right : You really add nitrogen to a soil to get beets forming a root? What's about radish ( i remember you advised to grow daikon instead of radish but I don't like it) ...Also add smth with nitrogen too? P.S. my big problem is lack of sun so I put growlights of 30 watt on my balcony and grow veggies in pots.
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a 5 месяцев назад
I’m sorry I didn’t understand all your questions but yes, I did add a nitrogen, heavy fertilizer like Alaska fish fertilizer to my beets and that has done the trick surprisingly. If you don’t like daikon radishes, maybe try watermelon radishes they’re a little more typical of a radish, but they seem to handle the heat a little bit better.

What kind of tomatoes do you grow in pot? Also what lettuce stays in hot Florida?

I like dwarf and determinate types of tomatoes grow in containers because they typically have a max size that they get to. Right now I’m growing Slietz. As for the lettuce, I’m very favorite one is Salanova

East Central FL here & I've been gardening for about 10 years now. This is my first year planting onions. I started them in late October/November & they are hardly growing. I've fed them twice now with high nitrogen. Any tips or advice? I planted around 100 plants and 10 of them look decent but I feel like they should be much bigger & healthier looking than they are.
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a 5 месяцев назад
If they’re not growing and you are fertilizing them, I would think that it might be a sunlight issue because they do like full sun at least six hours. You can also feed them more frequently to help speed them up. I like to use fish fertilizer every week or two.
@user-jo2or5pm3q
@user-jo2or5pm3q 5 месяцев назад
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a what kind of fish fertilizer do you recommend? They're in a spot where they get 8+ hours of sunlight a day, so that's definitely not a problem! Thank you so much for your response!

I just started planting fruit trees in my garden, peach, apple, Guava. Do I have to spray any of them for pests??? Thanks!
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a 5 месяцев назад
I spray mine with spinosad after the fruit form to deter worms, then monthly until harvest. After that, I normally don’t do anything else. Sometimes I hand pick off weevils during the summer, especially when they were young.

Congrats! Place them in the coldest room of your house, laid out flat and cover to make sure they are dark (Cotten towel or paper bags) for 2 weeks. Basically you want it dark and cool. Don’t wash them since the dirt will help protect the skin and allow it to thicken. Then after 2 weeks, I usually put in the fridge in a paper bag since we don’t have places like root cellars or basements. Storage usually prefers it humid and cold. You could also preserve them like canning or freeze drying. It’s harder for us down here to keep them long term due to our warm houses.
