Yiddish novelist Isaac Bashevis Singer once told San Francisco-based NPR talk host Michael Krasny that “Jews suffer from every disease except amnesia.”
Four of The New Yorker’s leading writers, Calvin Trillin, Patricia Marx, Adam Gopnik and Jeffrey Toobin join in conversation with Krasny, author of the bestselling book, Let There Be Laughter: A Treasury of Great Jewish Humor and What It All Means.

Some Jewish Russian refugees arrived at Ben-Gurion International, and a reporter asked them a few questions about what it was like in Russia, like how was the food, the housing, life in general. The Jew that was interviewd said, well you can't complain. Naturally, the reporter asked, so, why move to Israel? Because here you can complain.

My favourite Jewish joke: A Hasidic man goes to his rabbi and says "Rabbi, you'll never believe what just happened to me; my son left home and became a Christian!" And the rabbi says "unbelievable! My son also left home and became a Christian!" So the man asks the rabbi "well, what should we do about it" and the rabbi says "we should pray to G-d and seek His guidance." And so they pray and G-d answers and say "you'll never believe what happened to me"

SashaB11910G what do you mean?
@SashaB11910G
@SashaB11910G 7 лет назад
This is clearly a Christian joke. It assumes the Christian narrative to be both true and superior. It does not make fun of the Jews - it mocks them. It has in fact a distinct smell of age old Christian antisemitism. A Jewish joke would be making fun of Mary getting knocked up and claiming that a spirit did and of Joseph for believing it.
@Dan_The_Dude
@Dan_The_Dude 7 лет назад
SashaB11910G I never interpreted it that way. I mean, i first heard it in a video of two Hasidic men roasting their boss at the at a Jewish TV network. I do now see that it does kind of imply that Jesus is the son of G-d (I was raised Christian, and I'm currently a conversion student; I guess Jesus being the son of G-d is just kind of imbedded in my brain lol). I still don't see how it mocks Jews, or how it would be anti-Semitic. I am willing and happy to learn though, so if you're willing to explain how I'd greatly appreciate it.

A young man decided to leave the Shtetl and go to New York. Leaving his Mother behind off he went. When he got there being on his own he would go and eat dinner every evening at the same diner and order the same menu of steak. Each day he would cut off the first bite and then devour the rest. The owner couldn’t make out this process , apologetically he went to the guy and asked him why he cuts off the first piece. His reply was “when I left my Mother she wished me all the Blessings , but if I eat Treif (non kosher) may you choke on the first bite so that piece put to the side.

Sylvia and Irving, Jewish couple from Queens, it’s their 49th anniversary. Irving plans a big evening, he buys tickets for great seats at the hottest Broadway show, makes reservations at a three Michelin Star restaurant, and even rents a limousine. At the end of the night, in the limousine headed back over the 59th Street Bridge, Sylvia says “Irving, forty years we’ve been married now. After all this time, is there maybe something you’d want different or do different?” Irving thinks for a while and says “Sylvia, you’re my wife, I love you, we’ve been married forty years, but sometimes, when we’re making love, I want you should moan a little.” Sylvia thinks for a while and says “Irving, you’re my husband, I love you, we’ve been married forty years, for you I’ll moan.” So later that night they’re making love and Sylvia says “Now Irving?” “Not yet Sylvia.” A little later “_Now_ Irving?’, “Not yet Sylvia, I’ll tell you when!” A little later Irving shouts “Now Sylvia, now!” And Sylvia says puts a hand to her forehead and says “Oyyyyyy, the shopping I have to do!”

A joke that may not be Jewish, but i don’t think it would be offensive: a jewish family changes areas and the only school nearby is a catholic school, so their boy goes to the Catholic school. After a week, the boy comes home with a perfect A in his maths test, even though in his previous school he was not very strong in maths. His mom is amazed and asks him: “wow, how did you get this A in maths?” The boy answers: “well, as soon as you enter the school, you see this huge statue of a guy nailed on a plus sign, so I figured they take their maths extremely seriously’

In one of the showers at the kibbutz there was a hole in the separating wall, through which the women could peek into the men’s side, but they could only see the men from the waist down. Once when the women were taking their showers, one of them said to another “I think I can hear your husband on the other side”. The other woman peeks through the hole and says “No, that’s not my husband”. The first woman also peeks and says “you’re right, he’s not you husband!”. A flasher jumps out in front of a little old Jewish woman & opens his raincoat, she takes one look & says " you call that a lining?" Teacher asks a 5 year old Jewish kid "What is 2 + 2, the kids asks "What are we doing buying or selling?" Sadie meets her friend Rachel pushing her twin babies in their pram, Sadie peers in to the pram & exclaims what lovely babies! Rachel reply's this ones the doctor &that ones the violinist" A little old Jewish man in a retirement Home asks a little old Jewish Woman "Would you like Super Sex she thinks he is suggesting "Soup or Sex" & replies "I'll have the Soup!"

Could it be that the influence is actually from the Dutch days? Dutch and Jewish humour are s closely related and the general NY chutzpah is definitely Dutch.

Yiddish is largely in part constructed of Old German. Ashkenazi have resided in that part of the world many hundreds of years so I can see some blending. Hence,the Kugel,the brotchen etc....

I'm not a Jew, I just stumbled on this, but the last guy on the right who mumbles and then says, "Ah, uh, ah, uh" at the end of every joke, is that a Jewish thing?

No that I know of. Altho some of that style would certainly be used if the character in a joke was a schlemiel (a klutz, the guy who's always spilling the soup on you)

Why is the stage right guy trying to attack humor as politically incorrect? The reason good jokes are good is they require intelligence both in telling and listening . The dull humor comes from political wokeness ( in telling ) and ignorant / dumbed down audiences .

Egyptians are the humorians of the arab world, famous for their humor. you cant just automatically say jewish humor comes from suffering. first of, btw, for you eurocentrics, you are speaking of ashkenasi humor, not jewish humor, per se....dont know if morrocan, iranian, bene israel, or turkish jews are known for humor (or not.)....but we also know that jews were literate, born to kvetch and born to argue, factor in high intelligence, it could as well be . that....the Brits are pretty darn fun....me thinks we make too much of fetish out of the "five thousand yeahs of suffering" angle.

A hassid ic man with a frog on his shoulder walks into a bar in Montana. The bartender asks him "where did you get that?" The frog replies. "In Borough Park, there are lots of them there!" Two men from Arkansas get off the bus in Grand Central Station in New York. They see hassidic men dressed in traditional garb, One asks the other "Do you see them. What are they?". the other answers " Hassidim" . the first says " Ha see them too but what are they?"

sorry, not a good delivery in the bunch. This presentation REALLY lacks focus. Why spend the time? What's your point? To be waiting to pounce the second someone finishes a joke devoid of timing? Trying to outdo each other? It's a different kind of 'me too' phenomenon going on here. There seems to be no higher level awareness here. Just extemporaneous remembrances of stuff they ran across in their pasts. No scholarly input is discernible to me. "Distinctly unenlightening"
@jackkomisar458
@jackkomisar458 4 года назад
I think there were some interesting ideas mentioned here, but I agree about the lack of timing. My father used to tell two of the jokes that were told in this presentation, and he told them better. He was a psychologist and university administrator, not a comedian, but he knew what makes a joke funny and he got the most out of each one.
