Funny thing about this game: I had no idea what was outside the 1st city because me and my sister had literal hours of fun just riding around on top of the cars, and the boss was too hard to beat.
In Mario 64 me and my sister were convinced bowser had to be outside over a hill that is too hard to jump over. The main game was far too hard to children, so we made up our own fun
My little brother with a broken hand beat that boss while I was grinning over how hard I thought it was gonna be for him. So it's not that hard. Just a matter of perspective 🤣
@@Hedgeyy It got close at times, but I'd say it didn't have perfect voice acting - not that Legends' voice acting was incompetent, it was great for the time. From where I'm standing, the only PS1 game to have perfect voice acting (that I've played, granted) was Metal Gear Solid.
@@hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853 Well there is The Legacy of Kain series, which I would even argue did a better job in acting and writing generally than MGS.
that's bc Legends was dubbed in Toronto just like Resident Evil 2, and not with baka gaijins like Resident Evil 1, SotN, or X4. Toronto's voice talent was in countless cartoons from X-Men TAS to Total Drama, even a handful of anime dubs like Sailor Moon, Spider Riders, Beyblade, Bakugan and Medabots. Metal Gear Solid, on the other hand, went all out and got actual, honest-to-Chin-Chin, Los Angeles animation VAs like Crash Bandicoot Warped and Spyro the Dragon had done.
@@HedgeyySusan Roman's a legend but she was horribly miscast as Rock. I'd've gone with another kid (Michael Cera, perhaps?) or a man who can do boy voices (Rob Tinkler or Lyon Smith, hmm...)
Similarly played the series growing up (started from classic). I'm over the cancellation. Just waiting for the eventual collection to test if we still want it. Definitely getting it if ever.
@@gokajern the Megaman series along with Dead Rising and Dino Crisis particularly seems to get shafted the most in regards to the rest of Capcom’s IPs think about it DMC V and Resident Evil 2 remake was released not that long with widespread approval even got a Street fighter 6 announcement just a week ago at this point I see it as intentional spite nevermind the zero and x collections anyway
Those JPEG faces hold up amazingly well, so much better than more realistic ones just plastered on polygonal mannequin. Really surprised that hasn't seen a retro revival like the polygonal ones kinda have.
Absolutely agree on the dungeon design problem. MML1's dungeon felt REAL because it was one big interconnected nightmare. Breaking it up got rid of a lot of the charm.
But the interconected dungeons wouldn't work in Legends 2 since we explore diferent islands. Having one big interconected undeground structure on the psone would have several limitations because of the hardware, and it would make the world feel small because of it. So it made sense of each island to have their own ruin structure (the sub gates are more neutral in design compared to the main ones and resemble the ones in 1 more) and since we needed specific ones for finding the keys, having them more varied in theme was a nice touch. I personaly like what they tried to do in 2, but they played their cards with the story to early. 2 should have just set up the mistery so 3 could deliver the answers. The way they did the story made it very hard for making a sequel like Kbash said. There's still things unresolved, but since they spilled the main lore details in the end I don't know how to top that lol
@@elenavaleria9943 I think interconnected could work even more because the dungeons are all underwater connecting to different islands kinda like how MML1 did with some towns right?
Having OSTs on the regular dungeons in Legends 2 made it less dark to explore. The water dungeon has it's creepy moments but remove it and just have ambiance of an underwater world would've made it more nerve-wracking.
Megaman Legends was the original prototype open world game. Riding on cars. Climbing in top of building. Kicking vending machines to get free soda or destroy them. Turning random junk into special weapons for you to mess around with.
Absolutely obsessed with this series. I got Legends 1 as a little kid and wandered around that city for countless hours. To this day it still has one of my favorite art styles in video games, period.
This was the first Megaman game I ever played, it fucked my expectations for the entire series and thus ruined my life forever. Also the design of the technology, the trons and the reavers bots, is absolute perfection both stylish and alien. And getting to experience this early fuck: you got cute (top tier) waifus, you've got a big creative arsenal of weapons, a city to explore and soak in, a huge interconnected underground mystery murder mine, dancing monkey, oh too good.
Felt the same, i was spoiled with my n64 having both zelda's and megaman legends even though the n64 version ran like ass. No game has ever came close to the charm that is legends.
@@snatcherofpeachs c'mon, let the megaman legend game get praised for a second, the game is underappreciated, it deserved love. you don't need to bring out another game title to compare or convince anyone to play a specific game title, don't ruin the moment, it's rare moment, just let people appreciate the game.
@@jensenraylight8011 I see your point. Don't get me wrong, MML is great. I bring up MMBN and MMSF not to take away attention from or dismiss MML but because they mentioned it was their introduction to the Mega Man franchise and it sounded like they were a little let down when they discovered the rest of the franchise is not really at all like MML. I thought I'd mention Battle Network and Starforce as they are probably the closest you are going to get within the Mega Man franchise to Mega Man Legends, being more exploration-based, having a longform storytelling, RPG elements, etc. Having said that Legends is definitely completely unique and if you are looking for exactly the same experience, alas, humanity has been deprived of basking in more of its glory.
I still remember remnants of exploring the underground and knowing it's a whole different world down there was absolutely fantastic. A goddamn shame and a eternal grudge against Capcom for letting down such a masterpiece.
it's part of the genius of the timelessness of the games. rather than go for as realistic as possible, they decided to stick to an artstyle, and physically draw the faces on top of the models, so that they can make them look good from any angle and have the expressiveness they want. it's such an untapped goldmine of design i'm just waiting for the boomer gamers to quit with their crappy ps1 graphics nostalgia and start mimicking the GOOD ps1 graphics.
Funny enough, all the "Alterna-Verses" as you called them are actually part of one big timeline, with Legends being somewhere so far in the future that Machines and Humans are now pretty much one and the same and are called carbons. Was it all planned like this from the beginning? Of course not!
I mean, the Mega Man timeline was planned as early as Mega Man X. There’s a flowchart depicting all the major events of the timeline up to and including X from X’s development.
@@meathir4921 Really? I do not quite remember the flowchart but I know that it exists. Is it really already that old and did it already contain Legends?
@@Dragynn999 No but it did include everything up until that point. I’m extrapolating but if they had a timeline that early it stands to reason they maintained some semblance of one.
Not all. Battle Network and Starforce are a different timeline. Timeline 1 is Classic > X > Zero > ZX > Legends Timeline 2 is Battle Network > Starforce Arguably, timeline 3 is Pachislot Rockman Ability The X series itself kinda splits off at parts. We have Timeline 1 where from X7 we jump to Zero and Timeline 2 where from X7 we go to Command Mission and then X8 (we don't go to Zero here). (This bit is spotty because my memory sucks, so you might want to double check that). You can go check Reploid REVO's channel for that.
Not to be That Guy 0:21 seconds in, but the fact that MML ISN’T an alternate universe (nor any of the other games besides Battle Network and Starforce) but a continuation of the same timeline is a big part of the appeal of these games to me, and I wouldn’t have put off playing them for as long if I wasn’t under the misconception that they were in self-contained universes. The dark lore of the series is so much more significant when you realize this is the future Mega Man Classic was leading up to.
To anyone who tries Tron Bonne after playing legends 1, just know that the game expects you to lay all of your dps on the servbots. It’s easy to expect to skill through the big dungeon since it controls like the last game but nah. The second you start picking servbots with dedicated combat stats and using them to stun enemies, the hippul bot goes down easy.
How can I play without paying 500 bucks for a physical copy that I cant find available anyways, and no ps3? (Plus hasnt that store network shut down already?)
@@pianoman7753 I believe that decision to shutdown the store got delayed but I may be mistaken. If you’re not terribly opposed to emulation, I’d suggest looking into getting your hands on a PlayStation classic and getting it set up with project eris. Other people’ll suggest getting a vita but honestly jail breaking the classic was a better investment IMO and much easier.
Mega Man Legends (I had the '64' version specifically) is such a nostalgic title for me. When I was a kid, the only console I had access to for a long time was the N64. I was, perhaps, vaguely aware that Mega Man existed as a franchise outside of this one title, but to me as a kid Mega Man Legends was *the* Mega Man game. It was what Mega Man was all about. I loved playing it, but I never beat it. Exploring the old robot ruins underground was very scary for me as a kid, so instead I liked to hang out in the city and market area. I remember being endlessly amused by kicking the can up and down the hall, and watching the dog run around. That one little area is probably one of the coziest places in gaming to me. It seems silly looking back on all that as an adult, but perhaps I have something to learn from my childhood self about how the small things in life are often the most beautiful.
If they ever do a Mega Man Legends 3, I think it would be extremely cool if they did it in the PS1 style, blocky hands and all with the same amount of the perfect expressions
nah, that's lame. they should keep the aesthetic and _update_ it. imagine how good a game like this could look with the drawn on textures on the models but with better modelling, animations, and shading.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED THESE MASTERPIECES: They're all available on PSN on PS3. Let Capcom know we need more. I also heavily recommend EX Troopers on PS3. Levels up the Legends/DASH combat. Just take a week to learn Katakana first so you can read weapon names! Usually like $10 to import from Japan. 10th anniversary is approaching and I'm looking for Online CO-OP buddies!
For the record, this isn't an alternate universe. Classic, World, X, Xtreme, Zero, ZX, and Legends are all part of the same timeline. And then Battle Network and Star Force are in the same timeline as each other.
@@globster222 yeah, at one point you get a drill weapon, and that lets you go into secret areas that end up connecting each ruin together, well except for the beginning dungeon, but that was in a tower in the ocean.
Megaman Legends is so charming. Love the art style. And in the age where being able to just freely explore a 3D space was so much fun and made your childhood imagination soar, Legends' richly populated city (especially for the time) was leaps and bounds over any other game. The controls were stiff, but most 3D games were. Tomb Raider was far more stiff, but just exploring Lara's mansion was the most fun thing in every installment. Legends had that same spirit throughout most of the game with tons of charming characters to interact with. Games like Mario 64 controllee better, sure, but back then that didn't matter. The freedom and world detail for the time alone made Legends stand out above the others. The fun story and neat gameplay loop was a bonus to a little kid like me. Not everything holds up, but a good bit does. Love these games.
If someone could hack together the Legends 2 engine with 1’s levels/content, it’d be a certifiable classic. You could hand it to almost everyone and they’d have a good time.
A nice video but just to put it out here Megaman legends is not an alternate universe like battle network or starforce The timeline goes from Main universe: Classic - X - Zero - Zx - Legends (An alt timeline after mmx7 that leads to Command mission) Alt universe Battle Network - Star force
The series that got me into Mega Man as a kid, before I played X and the classics... these days I play the other series a lot more consistently, but I still have a ton of nostalgia for Legends 1 and 2. I had never played a game so "cinematic" at the time, it felt like an adventure. I remember watching Legends 3 get announced and I was so happy, but that entire project was iffy from the start. When they cancelled it, it dealt a serious blow to how I view Capcom, and made me really realize how dead in the water Mega Man was as a series.
So I like mml2 more even though what you said is right they sort of added too much and all that but I really liked the strange villains and their story. It was extremely weird in a way that was almost disturbing. Think of mml like ocarina of time and mml2 sort of becomes almost Majora's mask like towards the end. Of course the rest of the game is pretty silly and all so maybe the ending would feel jarring but I really liked that feeling especially playing it as a kid in the 90s when it came out. As far as the misadventures of Tron bonne, um. It was more or less just what you said. It tried but got boring real fast. That's why I never replayed it but I have replayed mml and mml2 as an adult and still love them
Came back here after the Capcom Surveys this week. Everyone do the survey! Your comedic line deliveries are so tastefully hilarious and you made this Legends veteran-fan realize that "it's okay" to not love 2. I've been realizing for a while that Tron Bonne is my favorite game after Legends so far. God I love the spin-off-spin-off energy of Tron Bonne...
If you ever decide to play Tron Bonne again, here's a little tip for the Hippo boss. Throw Servbots into his nostrils to force him to open up. Makes an insanely hard boss a cake walk.
I own a physical copy of 1 and 2 that I bought in 2020. They are by far my favorite games that I own and I was nowhere near alive when they originally came out
This game has never left my mind. Def one of my most influential games. Also....Tron Bonne is one of the best game characters EVER WRITTEN!!!! That slide down the pole after Mega Man saves her from the dog....heart meltingly adorable.
10:29 Listen, I didnt like that hit against elden ring cause honestly thats whats got me coming back to legends, I didnt know how much I loved the idea of a 3d dungeon crawler with difficult ass bosses> BUT UR SPITTIN Thank You for making such an amazing video
As a long time Legends fan, you’ve just earned yourself a subscriber. Extra points for mentioning TWEWY, Steambot Chronicles, Dark Cloud 2, and Assassin’s Creed being < MML.
My dream is that in my lifetime I can see the day Super Mario RPG, Mega Man Legends, and legend of the dragoon get remakes. Now in what seems like the age of remakes, finally after waiting for over 2 decades I got 1 of the 3. 🙏 here’s hoping for the other 2 🙏
Not a huge Mario rpg person but I'd probably pay full price for a Legend of Dragoon Remake. Going to play the OG later now you've got me thinking about it.
I played legends when i was 7 The tutorial dungeon had me absolutely terrified thanks to how they introduced the reaverbots at the first corner. never left the 1st city ever since reaching the area
I want the originals to come first. People deserve the originals as the first game is a perfect in every way. Then I want a full blown remake after the fact to modernize it. Bring on new fans and then hopefully... finally get a continuation.
I had the N64 version as a kid and it was really good! I remember I was actually afraid of the reaver bots and ended up just wondering around the cities. Also if you didn’t know, at the part where you stop the pirates from stealing a bunch of money, you can actually steal the money yourself and mega man will get a ton of negative karma and his suit will turn black. I did this always as a kid cause I just thought the black color was cooler without actually realizing the implications. Btw the music has the most pleasant bops around, with the dungeon themes being straight up bangers sometimes!
I remember finishing Misadventures of Tron Bonne as a kid the first time with only the Search Cannon/Buster with only Servbot 1 as the Sniper/Favorite bot without getting to the end of Mission 4 and only finished Missions 1,2,3, and 5. It made the last boss grindy for having low damage. The fun about the Legends Series is that it can be finished without too much grinding but the exploration and money-making on the side is a bonus.
You have no idea how many hours of my childhood I spent playing these three games. I was absolutely obsessed with them. The lore, visuals, story, combat, humour, drama, just absolutely everything about them clicked with me in a way most platformer JRPG's simply didn't. Even Ocarina of Time and Pokemon didn't possess the things that these games did, and somehow they stood the test of time in my heart. i still play the other games, but this one will never get tiring for me.
Looks like I know what I'm going to play next! Also... "If the world chooses to IbmeSucpopomretimnygKeBnasehmJuysItBweicalulsefIiWagnhtetdlToiMkakeeIThailsPwaartyOsfThhaeVviedeoLonger" 🤣
Megaman Juno was legitimately one of the coolest characters out of the legends series shame he never got used in any other megaman games, just like Spider in command mission …. Sigh… Also the shining laser is so Satisfying once you’ve fully upgraded, it just moving it around murdering everything in sight with no energy drain, death by rainbow
@@jacksonbowns1087 they did confirm that an original existed in game since the transformation ability can only turn the user into someone they have seen
I 100%ed all three of those games back in the day. I was in my teens so I grew up with mad crushes on both Tron and Roll. When MML3 was canceled I wrote letters asking them to publish it. I bought a 3DS just for that game. Thankfully I ended up with the Ambassador games, which was a cool consolation prize. One more thing. These games DESERVE PROPER REMASTERS AND RERELEASES!!! All you need to do is update the textures and add the ability to move while locked on to MML and TMOTB. A multi-player mode could even be sick. Anyway, good video. Thanks for sharing.
Ive generally never really liked cute things. It's weird but it's true. One of the only cute characters I have ever liked are the Servbots. They are idiots and they won me over. For anyone who hasn't played these, KBash barley talked about the interesting things you can do in these games. It's a perfect blend of Non/Linear with really good side content if you are enjoying the vibe of the in game world. These games are simple-ish but so refreshing if you need a break from modern gaming. Truly a PS1 classic that has stood the test of time. Play them anyway you can because they ARE great. You don't have to listen to me, though. I'm an old, puckered asshole. Listen to KBash. He only played these games THIS YEAR and had a good experience. You would too.
A friend sent me this video simply because I love Dash/Legends a LOT. Thank you for the review! It was fun! Though I like Legends 2 a LOT more than you. I felt like it was a major improvement. And yes, my real name is Juno and as a child, I got obsessed with him. I would recite all his lines by heart. I later played in Japanese (my second language) on the PSP and learned his lines in Japanese, too. Lol
This was my first PS1 game and still love it to this day. Surprised he didn't mention the Servbots legacy of cameos in other games. I actually just bought a plush of one (with magnetic curry plate) and it arrived this morning fittingly enough.
The way how extremely 'animated' the conversation sequences look is really impressing me here. Are there more games on PS1 that had that level of detail to such sequences? I played so,e games on there but what I mostly remember is just some games having voice acting but not really like facial expressions on characters' faces as well as body movement being that expressive.
Played the first Legends game when I was 5(I'm 30 now) Glad to see another new comer enjoying the series. Really great review, was laughing the whole time :3
These games, lunar the silver star story, and dark cloud 2 were some of my most played games as a child and that one of the essayist that I respect most was inclined to leave such a favorable review makes me happy! You tha man kbash!!
My experience with Legends/64 is an interesting one. I was in my Mid-Teen Years when I beat it for the first time. The save file I used was one, one of my relatives created and had got about half - way through it I.e at the Dock just before the Tron Ship Battle. I took over that Data & completed it all the way through about 3 - Years afterward. (As an older Gamer I intend to complete Legends again, and beat 2 - for the first time sometime soon)
It was only a matter of time until you covered this and I eagerly awaited. This game was my childhood and I will forever be furious that they canceled Legends 3 with all the hype they were building up. I really hope that they decide to bring it back in the future. Thank you for the video and I'm glad you're still keeping it up!
Most megaman games are in the same universe. They aren't "alternaverses", they're just in different time periods. It goes as follows Classic Series ➡ X ➡ ZX ➡ Legends. The Battle Network and Star Force are apparently in another universe.
I'm SEETHING because you called my favorite subseries "some other ones", can't believe you >:( But really though great video, I'm glad you looked at one of my other favorites
Man, I'm really glad you enjoyed the Legends series. It's an imperative part of not just my sensibilities as a gamer, but me as a person as well. Megaman Legends (very unimaginatively renamed Megaman 64 on the N64 which was the rendition I played growing up until I purchased the PS1 original in my early adulthood) was the very first Megaman game I ever played and needless to say, I was hooked on the franchise from then onward. I remember how excited I got when I checked your Twitter feed and saw you were working on covering these games. They catch so much flack and are so often chastised for their clunky controls and are subsequently written off as bad for that alone, it's fuckin criminal. These games are special for many reasons to the fanbase and for GOOD reason. I admittedly thought 2 was a bit of a letdown given the impact that Legends 1 had on me, but still definitely worth the romp, if only once. Great video man, love your content so much. By the way, happy belated birthday dude. I hope you had an awesome day and I can't wait for your next upload. Cheers, bro.
Great vid Kbash, I absolutely agree there should have been a follow up with Megaman Legends 3. But perhaps now you can go to the other side of the spectrum, to a time when Capcom dug too deep, got too greedy with sequels, and subsequently buried a series in gacha hell. I speak, of course, of Breath of Fire.
Never played Misadventures of Tron Bonne, but I grew up absolutely loving both Legends games and I'm still mad we never got MML3. We did eventually get Megaman 11, so maybe there's hope, but man I just dont see them ever doing a third game and it is a goddamn shame. These games have an intense charm to them that I have never seen replicated and I just want to feel that again.
I love the reward you get for exploring and following up on everything in Levends 1, Legends 2 has that, and I think it's gameplay is much better than the first's, I do also see that slight shift in the intent in 2, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I think it was good that they made the dungeons more Zelda-esque, because that's how the gameplay would naturally evolve, it's megaman, without a huge genre shift, he's always gonna be Mr.jump n shoot, which granted, gets boring, and giving enemies weak points, and needing to deal with them in ways that aren't JUST jump n shoot is a natural progression. I think their plan with Legends 3, starting off controlling a new character was a great idea, it would have allowed them to introduce new mechanics in a natural way that would have carried over once you got back in control of Volnutt. I think they were leaning MORE into that Zelda angle, and I think that's great, more tricky enemies, force you to move, put you on your back foot so you can't just jump n shoot. I hope we see Legends 3, eventually, I think it's too charming and fun to explore to let slip into obscurity.
No matter their slip-ups I genuinely believe capcom is the greatest video game developer of all time and Megaman Legends is just one of the myriad of examples of why. No one else managed to capture exactly that feel of a 90s anime as a video game the way they did. Game's a massive, somehow underappreciated achievement of its era.
Fantastic reviews, love your over the top style, it fits MML very well. And I agree with just about everything here, the first game will always be the better of the 4(3) games and I hope that one day, we may get a revival of the series, but only time will tell. Just a shame that we didn't get a third numbered installment to wrap up the series...
I fell in love with this series after I had watched the DYKG video on it. I had already known who Tron was beforehand because I played lots of mvc tho. I really wish we can get a conclusion one day, even if it's not in a legends 3.
Okay, this is eerie. Get out of my head Kbash. Dude I literally just finished Megaman Legends 2 the other day; the original Legends is one of the first video games I ever played and one of my all-time favorites from childhood. One of my first thoughts after beating it was "I wonder what Kbash would think of these, they seem like the kinds of games he'd cover on the channel." I don't know why but I just *knew* that I'd see a Megaman Legends retrospective popping up here someday... Which is weird. That's weird.
You definitely have primo taste for covering these games tho frfr. I been doing a lot of thinking about Megaman Legends lately so the timing of this really is weirdly serendipitous though.
Hi Kbash! Will you ever cover Alundra? The first one is a zelda-like masterpiece, the second... Well... It sucks, but kinda reminds me of Megaman Legends, dunno why
