Just before the pandemic hit, we launched our Save Our Severns Appeal to extend the lifespan of these amazing lifeboats, which many of you generously supported. To show our thanks, we want to take you inside our All-weather Lifeboat Centre and update you on how the project is progressing.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need. Whether you're stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.
But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.
If you spot someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

The ships' crews get a lot of attention, being the nexus of the all the RNLI team and the individuals y'all help out at sea. It's exciting to watch a successful rescue. Backing those crews are thousands of others like this engineering team. These folks ensure the crews have the best equipment to carry out the often dangerous and arduous rescues the RNLI performs. Great to see how the engineering team is refitting the Severn class.

Awesome boats in these rough waters. Hull design is key for sure. This is where the word "pride" comes into its own. Good job!

Hi Jason, an ex-service Trent Class costs £110,000 and an ex-service Mersey Class costs £75,000. If you’re interested in purchasing an ex-service Mersey class or Trent class lifeboat, please email our Asset Sales Manager Adrian via adrian_frogley@rnli.org.uk

Just a question on the overall design, I doubt the hull form was designed with absolute speed in mind, but are there design considerations to help them maintain their speed as sea conditions worsen? From the outside these seem like the maritime equivalent of a trophy truck or rally car; not the absolute fastest, but much more tolerant of conditions than more lightly built vessels that would otherwise dramatically outrun it.

Hi Griffin, yes the hull design is a compromise between speed and seakeeping. As with most boats, maintaining speed in heavy seas is achieved through powerful engines rather than hull design - that said the safety of the crew is vitally important and the boat will need to slow down in heavy weather. The full design speed can only be achieved safely in calmer conditions.

A chemical head, not the composting type then. Still far better then the now outlawed sea flush ones, very embarrassing if flushed in port and a 'floater' appeared alongside.
