The Anaheim Police Department is leading Orange County with a pilot program to test the Tesla Model Y as a patrol vehicle to ensure the agency is equipped with enough police vehicles to properly serve the community.
National supply chain issues, aging patrol vehicles, and delivery delays of newly purchased patrol cars have caused a significant vehicle shortage in the Anaheim Police Department’s fleet. The department sought out a creative way to quickly acquire patrol cars. Tesla presented a unique opportunity to procure six (6) Model Y’s from available inventory and upfit them for patrol duty through their associated vendor, UP.FIT, a division of Unplugged Performance.
The Tesla Model Y was selected for its advanced features, including rapid acceleration, ample storage capacity, affordability, and low maintenance requirements, all of which are integral to police operations. With state-of-the-art technology and safety features, in addition to an expansive supercharging network throughout the city, these vehicles will enable officers to respond swiftly to incidents and effectively engage with the community.
Throughout the pilot program, APD officers will closely monitor the performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of the Model Y in various operational settings. Data collected during this period will help guide future decisions regarding the integration of electric vehicles into the department's fleet.
“Due to our patrol vehicle shortage, we had to seek out alternative vehicle options, which led us to explore utilizing Teslas as police vehicles,” said Chief Rick Armendariz. “We are enhancing public safety for Anaheim by getting patrol vehicles into service faster."

What’s the cost per vehicle?

Is there some special software for use as a police car? I mean, if police need to do a pit maneuver, wouldn’t standard Tesla safety features prevent that?

@ Driver always has full control of the vehicle. Warning lights and sounds may still go off during a PIT.

If you plan to pull me over, please do it at the end of your shift when you are out of battery charge. Thank you.

This is AWESOME! I'm now wondering if Tesla is welling to customize the software and infotainment system to include law enforcement "apps" for navigation, accessing DMV database to run license plates and perform daily tasks all in one screen!!

Model S, with bigger range, quicker acceleration and higher top speed would be better for day to day police work.

30 min is a long time to wait, if it is a busy shift, but it may work with a small area to patrol

About 20 minutes to charge with a Supercharger. Enough time to do end-of-day paperwork.

One half hour is and could be much needed lifesaving time, especially when one never knows the time that it will need to be out charging, that an officer will be unavailable and off of the road, unable to assist a fellow officer, or maybe provide lifesaving aid, assist in a fire, or back-up a fellow officer on a call as serious as a bank robbery. In the case of multiple emergencies, your 911 responders will face unrelenting calls from the public, while half the shift is out charging. I can see the calls backing up now from charging issues. And what about PIT maneuvers? Can a Tesla perform that? Can a Tesla have a push bar installed on it? If so, how much will that increase the weight of the car, and decrease the length of their charged time? Has that been tested and evaluated yet? I think electric vehicles, as a total response to a problem, for LEOs anyway, would be a failure for the community that chooses to exercise that decision. JMHO

@@blondeblue156 30 minutes is the charge time approx from 20% to 80% so if there were to be an emergency after 5 minutes of charging youd still have 25-30% charge available which is more than enough, yes a push bumper would be able to be installed, weight increase is negligible (under 100lbs)

Teslas won’t last with how long these high speed chases go. The technology is not ready for that yet. Sad when you see these things on the side of the road dead and a gas vehicles comes to tow it to a charger.

Someone is going to get killed if the patrol car gets rear-ended and it is going to short circuit-out if it gets submerged in water in a heavy rainstorm.

@@russellmcdonaldjr2123 Well, at least it won't be ME because I will be getting away in a Dodge Charger HEMI which APD put up for auction and I purchased.
