(Note: this video was revised 10/7/17 at the request of a company for which Excel OEMs). Just before heading to Tokyo's Narita airport to go home, AnalogPlanet.com editor Michael Fremer stopped by at Excel Sound Corporation in Yokohama, which manufactures Hana brand cartridges as well as OEM-ing for many other brands.
He was met at the front door by publicist and president of Youtek Limited Hiroshi Ishihara and Excel Sound Corporation president Masao Okada.
As you'll see and hear during the tour of the facility, there were frequent translation issues that led to some humorous and/or frustrating communications.
Still, there was much to see and learn about a company that managed to survive the "death of vinyl" by expanding into low priced accessories until the near miraculous resurgence of interest in vinyl records.

Please, please, please, Michael. You have tremendous love, knowledge and respect for music on vinyl. When you talk passionately about records and transcription equipment we feel it’s greatness as a pursuit. This visit should have been a treat. These men have so much to say and could have raised our appreciation for their work as masters in their field. Why then, did you charge around like a bull in a china shop? You mocked, dismissed and belittled. From the get go you couldn’t even be bothered to try to pronounce your host’s name. You really insulted the gift of a visit and insulted us your audience members. If you are going to do this, do your research, have some questions that help us learn about the people you are introducing us to. You came off as boorish and gauche. Look at people’s faces in this video. They were visibly upset and surprisingly gracious. I hope you have the good grace to acknowledge how badly your antics went down with those very serious gentlemen.

After two years, I still have not heard Michael to apologize about his behavior, maybe he still thinks he was funny and that we do not understand his "sense of humor". Shame on you Michael.

None other than Okada San. He is revered as one of the best cartridge designers alive. I found it a real treat to see the inner workings of Excel and get an idea of the scale of operations there. I imagine the percentage of sales from cartridges has only increased since this was filmed a few years ago, which is a very good thing for them.

I find this video really disturbing. The interviewer is generally quite disrespectful to these guys who have invited him into their private business. He constantly makes flippant rude remarks, and gets annoyed when they don't understand his English expressions. He almost appears to treat them like children simply because they don't speak English as well as he does. The truth of the matter is very different. The guys at Excel are clearly very accomplished engineers and successful business men, whereas the interviewer is just some blogger with a mic.

Smart business man to diversify his business and keep this gem of an audiophile company afloat. Culture shock for the interviewer but he wasn't that bad.

This is such shameful behavior on the part of Michael Fremer. He’s incredibly insensitive and impatient with a guy who is interpreting for him. The Excel Audio spokespeople were annoyed. I appreciate that Fremer was a stand-up comic in a previous life and he was trying to spice up the video. But he showed his impatience and he just came off as being incredibly rude.

The turntable that Mikey thinks is broken (@10:00) because the counterweight is riding low probably has a special bracket that allows the counterweight to be positioned below the pivot point. Some audiophiles do this to add tracking stability and you can purchase special angled brackets for this purpose.

I just started watching Fremer's videos and reading his reviews. On the one hand I am thrilled at what I've seen but on the other I am pained and left cold. How can this be taken seriously? A video record of Excel cartridges is unique, and even historically important, (as are many of his tours) but it feels bittersweet, like a golden opportunity squandered on the whims an oblivious ego. Insensitivity and dismissiveness, combined with lousy camera work/editing and a general lack of focus seem to be Fremer's modus operandi. It's particularly painful since I share Fremer's love of analog sound reproduction, and also because there just aren't many of us analog aficionados with such a voice in the media. Ultimately I've concluded Fremer's style is doing no good for the hobby and I'm going to avoid him from this point forward. (Any technical problems could be forgiven if he were even slightly gracious). Perhaps it's just time for him to retire, but like so many members of his arrogant & privileged class of American baby-boomers, he won't.

I started to watch this w/o knowing who the reviewer was, other than 'Analog Planet'. Half way through I started thinking that the interviewer, whoever he was, is a complete and utter douchebag. No wonder Americans get a bad rep abroad. Then I find it out its Fremer! What the hell? If there is anyone who should know how to interview cartridge manufacturers it's him, but apparently not.

Saludos

Interesting. Just a couple of guys in a rather small sheet metal building (probably because of earthquakes) building cartridges. One tip, though: be a little bit careful with English idiom (such as the one about hatching, can't find it back now) because it's going to be difficult for a non-native speaker.

Well, vinyl is still a niche market. But one that has grown considerably since,say,2010. So much so that ever more companies try to secure a slice of this growing pie. However, this market is split in two very different pieces: high end and consumer class.

I know this is a few years old but I’m only now just in the market for a new cartridge. The Hana ML has been mentioned as one to listen to. So I watched this and I just don’t know what to say? I don’t think anyone come out looking well. Mr Fremer sounds tired and impatient and the hosts under prepared for the visit. If you’re considering spending £1000s on a premium product you don’t want to see boxes of crap imported accessories laying or hanging about. The most painful bit for me was the chat by the microscope. It didn’t fill me with confidence that once I’d handed over my hard earned cash that I would have something that worked and was aligned properly. I know this is the case with most cartridges but this video emphasised the crazy world and costs of cartridges.

Painful to watch. I know you could have done better, Michael--and you know it, too. Others have said it more bluntly with respect to the unfortunate caricature of "the ugly American" on display. When you're too tired to maintain a professional manner, it might be best to wait until next time.

I agree with you. I’ve watched and enjoyed a lot of Mr. Fremer’s videos but this one struck me as being disrespectful and to these polite and welcoming Japanese men. Although the video provides interesting information, it also reflects how someone can be condescending or insensitive to those of a different culture. In the video description, it states that there were “frequent translation issues...” (actually, it should be called “interpretation” as opposed to “translation” since the former involves the spoken word and the latter the written word) but the frequent use of colloquialisms by Mr. Fremer, whether he is aware of doing this or not, often confuse others who know English as a second language because they were educated in a more formal manner in that language. I know the importance of avoiding the use of colloquialisms in such a case because it can generate misunderstandings. I have for years taught students in medicine how to be sensitive to other cultures and how to accurately communicate with patients who speak English as a second language. It is particularly important in healthcare to accurately explain issues. In the case of this interview, speaking directly and plainly to the Japanese men would have avoided much miscommunication and the inaccurate responses from them as a result. It is not the primary fault of the interviewee for responding with a “yes” to some of Mr. Fremer’s questions, but rather Mr. Fremer HIMSELF not being able to make himself CLEAR to them. Therefore, they should not have need laughed at.
