Welcome back to this update! Lots going on in the third week with the Hans SL! Breaking in nicely at over 20 hours and we preformed some further adjustments to zero in on the perfect alignment, as well as dealt with the loading issue. The results are very promising, as I see lots of interesting records being played for the first time in years! I wanted to highlight a few discs I thought sounded amazing through the new set up. New addition to the setup is an Emmeline Nighthawk phono preamp that is on loan from Oz at Let There Be Sound, an outfit just west of Ft Lauderdale but in close proximity to Miami. This unit has opened things up nicely and tamed that early grit and glare I was getting in the first few hours of break in and incorrect loading. Hope to be able to give you a formal review of the Hana shortly and then move on to the next upgrade which will involve choosing a phono stage for the Hana (and other cartridges to follow.)

Good day Scott I finally got a chance to see and hear your first impressions of your new Hana cartridge. With 15 hrs in I see the smiles on your face when describe how nice the records sound. Wait until the 30-50 period and you will hear things unlike before. With my Hana cartridge , the one thing I noticed that quiet records where extremely silent and with records where the vinyl was noisy, they also quieted down as well. Now that you found the proper loading for your system and to your liking, I guess a new phono preamp is going to be an addition to your system soon. In the interim, Just sit down enjoy all of the good sounds. 😎

I hit it right on point when I installed the Hana EH today. My first moving coil with my new Zen and not a flaw to be found. The cartridge alignment was basically the same as the AT440mla I was using and it lined up perfectly with no distortion from beginning to end. I am on cloud nine now! Great channel!😊

So happy for you! Your going to hear it open up and relax even more over the next 30 hours. Was your AT440 at the end of its life? My Denon 110 was starting to go downhill. I couldn't wait to change it and the Hana was at the top of my list. Thank you so much for your comments. Your perspective is always welcome and your experience with the cartridge will be welcome on the two Hana videos and when I do the main review of the cartridge.

Hi Scott, Good to hear that you are enjoying the break in period on your Hana SL cartridge. You showed a couple of my Favorite records on this Video. The Genesis Trick of the Tale from Mofi sounds really good and the Joan Armatrading debut is also a wise choice. It is amazing how a new cartridge, triggers going back to the collection for a new sound experience. An exciting time for you , that is for sure. ENJOY!

Scott….I bought so much music lately..I can’t remember what I bought. I do have to say my Madonna collection of 12” vinyl singles have gone viral. Even Rhino Records have commented on them. I have a crazy good collection and…on top of it. The 45rpm Singles sound unbelievably good. Anyway hope you’re doing good these days and your house didn’t get flooded. Oh I did get my reissue of Frank Sinatra’s Watertown and it sounds beautiful.

I did survive the great flood, thank you! I'm curious about Watertown. I have never heard it. I may try the new reissue. Also thinking of doing a video on some great 45 singles. They do often sound amazing.

Hi Scott the best way to test your new cartridge is to see how it sounds on just regular average recorded LPs. Try blasting David Bowie's Station to Station or the first cars or B-52's and see what they sound like. All super well recorded are going to sound great but that's not the real test. Besides do you really only want to listen to well recorded LP's just so think you got a great sounding system
@ThePressingMatters
@ThePressingMatters 2 года назад
You're right, and I will test those three tonight Tara. I'd hate to be boxed into a system that didn't reproduce my favorite rock classics well. I'll check them out and report back. I have a good feeling they'll sound superb as well! Thanks for watching and commenting!

So you liked the Nighthawk, are you going to purchase one? Interesting how it fixed any issues you had with the sound with the load settings. It is unusual with the battery power.
@ThePressingMatters
@ThePressingMatters 2 года назад
I'll be comparing phono stages over the next few months, but I love having the control on the fly, but once you settle on the best setting , I suppose dipswitches are ok. I don't think the battery operation has to do with anything but providing a lower noise floor than a transformer.

Ray, I need a way to reach you! I just installed the tubes and the new Vishay resistors and am blown away with the sound! We tested my tubes and they were out of spec. The Golden Dragons tested much better and so we installed them. I usually don't change two things at once but those old tubes had to go! Thank you so much for turning me on to the tubes. Cant thank you enough!

I know you have moved onto the ML since then, but do you remember what loading you settled on with the SL? Hana only specifies > 400 ohm, which leaves a lot of room for interpretation. I have just installed an EL, which has the same spec so it would probably like the same loading as your SL did, that's why I'm asking.
@ThePressingMatters
@ThePressingMatters 10 месяцев назад
Good question! I probably would have liked the EL better than the SL. Good choice for a good price. The problem I had with the SL was it was too bright. So even though I tried to get around it by lowering VTA, moving to tubes, lowering gain, etc. I had to resort to dialing back the loading. 400 was still a bit edgy, and surface noise was an issue, so I settled in at 250 or 100 most of the time. Please bear in mind my example may have had some issues. I would start at 400 with yours and play a range if different records over a week or two. If it seems tipped up and you'd like more warmth try something lower as I did. If you have ability to change gain at the phono, consider that too. You want to select a gain setting where you are getting full dynamics but no harshness which would indicate too much gain. If that is the case reduce her gain at the phono pre and use your volume control a bit higher. You want a nice smooth range of movement on your volume control and not a sharp rise. All this tinkering changed when I got away from the SL. I'm enjoying the ML with normal gain and loading. I bet you will find the EL to work well at the recommended settings but don't be afraid to experiment if you have the flexibility to do so.

Hi Eric, I'm looking right now. It's a US pressing CBS FM 37827, dark green label with CBS repeated around the perimeter. Date on the back is 1983. Barcode is 7464-37827-1. Deadwax inscriptions: Side1 - MAL 37827 G1A Chet (in cursive script) D18 G1 Side2 - BL 37827 G1A G1. My copy has a paper insert with a bio and photo.

Hi Scott. Love your channel. Don't wanna be a partybreaker here but the Genesis Trick MFSL isn't that great. Please check the German or Holland issues. They blow the MFSL out of the water. Especially in the mids and highs. I know this for a fact as I've copy too. The MFSL from the 80s are a mixed bag anyway. A good friend had the Katy Lied from the Dan on MFSL and it sucked big time. Not to mention the Abbey Road version of MFSL. Btw, if you really want a jaw dropping experience, please purchase the 1st gen (Charisma/Vertigo or ATCO) CD from the 80s. Greetings from The Netherlands.

Hi Emile! Thank you so much. I have no doubt there are better sounding copies out there, and now I'm very curious to hear one of the pressings you mention. When I originally got the MFSL, it was noticeably better than any US pressing, and I stopped looking further. I could imagine there could be some improvements gained in the middle and highs. I know many MFSL from the early period do have midrange issues. I am just so enamores with the music on this record that I'm probably more forgiving of its weaknesses. If you could point me to a Discogs link for one of the issues you mention, it would be greatly appreciated. Now I want to hear what you're talking about! Thank you so much for the informative comments and thanks for watching the channel. It's great to have you here!
