[Try4ce] Something that has been brought to our attention - the reason composite video looked much worse than the 2017 Nt mini is because of enabling the "Dejitter" feature. Turns out, Dejitter should only be used with component, RGB, and HDMI. Composite and S-video are MUCH less noisy when that feature is left alone, and seems to be very close to 2017 Nt mini and a real NES once again. I always thought the look of composite was one of the coolest features of the Nt mini because it made the video output feel so authentic. So I'm glad to stand corrected on this!
Analogue needs to get it together... They never respond to the community and they need to release a normal version of the NT mini, like the Super NT and Mega SG. It is starting to get ridiculous... Seems to Me that more and more they are turning into Apple than a retro gaming company.
Love the video as always guys and I would love to buy products from Analogue. The problem with that is it would seem they only make limited edition products. I say this because nothing ever comes back in stock when sold out.
A great look at the system. Shame no one can get one really. Analogue so focused on accuracy they're even emulating Nintendo's false scarcity of products
@DEAD CHANNEL For the MiSTer, I would check out Digikey New Zeland for the DE 10 Nano. Only other "Required" part for some of the cores would be the Ram expansion board. You don't need the I/O board, and you can use a cheap OTG USB Hub or a USB Hub with a USB A to USB Micro adapter.
For anyone in New Zeland, here is the link to the DE 10 Nano on Digikey New Zeland www.digikey.co.nz/product-detail/en/terasic-inc/P0496/P0496-ND/6817231
@DEAD CHANNEL if you don't own cartridges and you are mostly playing emulators currently, then maybe you should consider MiSTer even if it is expensive, simply because of the high number of systems that it simulates. There is a difference between a conventional software emulator and MiSTer :). Analogue products and original hardware are mainly targeted towards audiences that have game collections and/or space to store them. If you don't have any of that, MiSTer is definitely a better option if you want to experience those old games as close as possible to how they were intended to be experienced.
I'm still hoping Analogue releases a cheaper, plastic version of the Nt Mini that matches the aesthetics of the Super and Mega Nt. I love the NES but the Nt Mini price and looks never did it for me.
Yeah, it never made sense to me as to why they couldn't release a 200$ Nt. Also the cartridge issue that Try has with the 2017 model is simply unacceptable, they should have replaced his unit or at least repaired it, especially after shelling out 500$ on the damn thing...
@@joysticksnjukeboxes My TV doesn't handle 720p as properly as it should as if I get subsampling on that resolution and it shows up in scanlines which is my prefered way of playing these games. For me personally until either the AVS has an updated unit which can do 1080p+ or there is a reasonably priced NES FPGA From analogue I'll just stick to real hardware.
For those playing Final Fantasy 3. The airship disappears when you enter a town or cave. The glitch could only be fixed by changing the speed setting to fully buffered. This happened to me with Everdrive and the original FF3 cartridge.
I don’t know if you guys will see my comment, but I really appreciate all the effort you put in for the community. Your videos are always extremely logically assembled, and the production value is honestly ridiculous. I’m sure your viewers appreciate everything you do.
At 24:00, you show the jitter in the Noir's composite video and later S-Video. That extra jitteriness is present when the enable dejitter option is turned on, as explained in the manual. Turn it off under Video -> Extra Features for composite and S-Video video and you should get an image identical to the 2017 Nt Mini.
The retro gaming community has so much damn elitism for every single way to play, it's good to see this channel being so unbiased since they give everything a try (no pun intended)
5:00 that's so you can turn your console on remotely from the controller. You turn on the controller, then hit Select+A to turn on the console. I think this is a great feature, the less i have to get off my ass, the better ;)
The MiSTer does have an Intellivision core but it's not part of the main MiSTer cores. It works really well. Every game I tested with it works as you expect. The 7800 core to my knowledge is being worked on and in the future we should see many more cores like the X68000, PC-8801 and hopefully FM Towns, PC-9801, Atari Lynx, Wonderswan and Neo Geo Pocket but we'll see. Thank you for another awesome video.
The sprite number limit is used in some games as a way to display only part of sprites. For example in the dungeons of Zelda, Link walking through a door will be wrongly displayed if you disable the sprite limit.
@@MrAdam802 If history is any indication there could be another "one final run" since that seems to be a marketing gimmick at this point. If it happens they'll announce it on socials.
I noticed in this video you talked about the Analogue DAC, however, I don't recall you making a video about it. I would very much enjoy that, even if it is just a short overview of the device, since knowing even just the basics about it would be better than knowing nothing.
M.M., I don’t see any need for more. Now I’m just stuck in the ongoing grind with this company trying to buy their more affordable products I *will* use, despite their every effort to not want to seek one to me. My mission for the last year plus has been to pick up the Super Nt. It’s been out of stock for over a year. They just got a very small replenishment but didn’t notify customers who had been signed up for notifications. I hear sales went live and were limited to two per customer. People struggled. Per usual, to snag one and check out before they were gone again in minutes. Long story short, we have another round of pushed off customers and a whole lot of scalper units listed on eBay. I have never once encountered a company who hates their customers more than Analogue.
As someone who just upgraded to the NT Mini Noir I kind of miss the turbo controller button customization and the built in game genie database for inserted carts on the AVS. Those are both really convenient features.
You guys are so knowledgeable and go in-depth. I’m not even gonna check the audio settings for now. I was so impressed of the sound already. I did have my everdrive crashing several times because it was tilted forward. But beside that, i’m utterly most satisfied with my purchase. I’ve also seen the rad racer glitches (way worse) on my original NES with everdrive. The Everdrive had some FW upgrades, and on the NT Mini it looks great now. I have a famicom pirate card that doesn’t work, i’m gonna test that 3.6 Vdc feature! Thanks a lot guys!
I caught the Xexyz sound clip playing for a few seconds. Nice! Not many people seem to know about the game, but I loved it when I was a kid and still own my original copy. I guess I was always into "underground" stuff even back then LOL.
I will likely never use one of these, let alone own one of them. But I just love listening to you guys talk about this stuff! It just expands my imagination -- all the things that can be done to enhance the retro-gaming experience!
It's more expensive than buying a famicom and nes both pre rgb modded from a good vendor ......, so I have no reason to buy it anyways, but amazing and really interesting video, as always. EDIT: Shipping from analogue to where i live costs 120 bugs extra and there are import costs to pay, that would come to another 80 bugs. Which is why I would really like to see an less expensive version of their solution similar to the super NT, which would've still cost me 350 bugs or a reduction in their crazy expensive shipping costs.
You're right that it's more expensive but the price difference isn't actually that great (unless you're really experienced at soldering) & there are compromises with the OG hardware. It's up to people whether or not those compromises are worth it.
There are around 200 NT Mini Noire for sale on ebay right now for not a huge amount over Analogue retail. Scalper's disappointment is your chance, so if you missed out and want one, this is probably the best time to get it.
I’m not personally interested in the NES beyond a few games so I’m not in the market for one of these, but I find FPGA so exciting and your coverage of it is universally brilliant. I just picked up an Analogue Duo despite not owning any PC Engine games a week ago, because it was exactly the product I was waiting for. Something that lets me collect the PC Engine shooter library and play them with low lag, without having to worry about addons, reliability and RGB mods. Analogue fundamentally are releasing products that people really need, and they’re executing them well (barring some QC issues with this damn disc drive). So it’s a damn shame that they feel the need to include so much FOMO in their marketing strategy. There’s more than enough of that in the hobby already, I seriously think Analogue wouldn’t struggle to sell twice as many of these if they just… made them. And they don’t have a wider brand image that they need to maintain like Nintendo. So it just doesn’t make any sense to me. And the way they’ve handled the success of the Pocket by cashing in on limited run colour variants rather than just working on maintaining availability is disappointing.
I’m with you in wanting a $200 NES FPGA from these guys. I recently got a Mega SG and I’m loving it. $500 or so for an NES machine is outside of my price range, especially since a lot of this is features I would never use. But hey, at least there’s the AVS for me to eye.
I'm really happy with my AVS. I'd be willing to bet Analogue is purposely not competing directly with that. Why would they? So many other consoles in need of love...
I watched the whole video, despite it being 98% over my head. I sincerely wish I could understand what you dudes are saying. And yet, I gather that if I did understand, I'd be heartbroken that I don't own one of these no-longer-available Analogue machines. Well, I guess it's back to my front-loading NES, hooked up via RF adapter to my 13" CRT that sometimes works, sometimes not, that sits right next to my 50" 4K TV.
They probably will in the future, it doesn't make a lot of sense in my opinion for them to add all these features and completely rewrite the nes core unless they have plans to release a more mainstream version later.
because the $500 ones sell out just as quick, with artificial hype and limited stock. analogue only does anti consumer practises to drive people to buy them or else they're paying double to people who are just flipping them
They *had* potential. They’ve been pulling this nonsense, and getting worse at it, for a number of years. They lose more customer faith every year with each blunder.
You can plug in original controllers just fine on the MiSTer FPGA, just get either, a LLAMA, a Blisster or a SNAC adapter and you are good to go, you can use LLAPI cores with LLAMA or Blisster for extra low latency (though regular usb protocol already syncs to sub 1ms).
25:47 I'm so happy to know that you guys are becoming more critical of sound accuracy for these old devices. So many retro gaming content creators seem to put an emphasis on video accuracy, often at the expense of audio. It really is about time more people cared about audio as much as they do video.
Great review and thank you for taking all the time to be so thorough with it. The original NT Mini is how I first found out about Analogue and I've not had to use my OG hardware ever since. It was that good. I pre ordered and got a Noir simply because I fear the day my original may fail so I wanted a backup. I use it constantly and am extremely thankful that Kevtris did all this incredible work with the cores. Next to my pc engine the NES is my all time most played console so I'm thrilled for it. So again really appreciate the overview as it makes combing through it later myself less of a chore. Being able to use my real controllers and accessories is a huge selling point for me so it's got a permanent place in my collection.
Exactly. Bought an AVS because they're available and Analogue's products, for all their premium status, might as well not exist. Covid-19 has thrown the state of bot scalping into sharp relief, with several lawmakers in the UK taking action, I hope the US follows suite.
I've had an AVS since the early days, yes it is great and I've loved it but it does not come close to this system in terms of features and quality. Everyone needs to stop pissing on other peoples' cereal just because you cannot afford it or missed out.
@@merlingt1 You got one? Good. I've got no beef with you. The manufacturer that based his original design on IRREPLACABLE NES parts and has found no substitute since to make the Nt mini reproducible forever? Yeah, you can say he foresaw it and did nothing for financial gain.
Now if only Analogue would restock their products or give us some updates. P.S. Still waiting on that gameroom tour, Try! I've been so patient and wanna seeeee iiiiiit!
[Try4ce] I'll definitely get to it next year! I've decided one major piece of furniture I want to replace sometime next year and then I'll be ready to make this happen!
The NES NT products look so awesome and I wish I could get one, but there’s no way I can ever afford it even for the incredible jail broken core software which is the main thing I want them for. I hope they do cost reduced future production runs of these someday.
I had the super NT, but sold it. I really enjoy the retro experience on a CRT with original hardware. But an Analogue product is so good. The NT mini is great too because the original hardware looks awful, even on a crt. I wish they'd release a cheaper NT mini
I have the 2017 Nt mini and it does not support the game To The Earth. The game loads but it won't accept controller input. I am surprised because this is a first party game. Knowing that the system is still not reference quality makes me glad I did not preorder the Noir when I had the change. Thanks for always packing so much information into your videos.
I'm getting really sick of Analogue's shenanigans. They can't add an NES core to the Super Nt, but they can add a Genesis core to the Nt (no SNES core though! LOL!). MiSTeR's sound replication is much closer than Analogue's, although I have to admit that I don't necessarily think accuracy is the most important thing. For someone that WANTS accurate sound compared to the original hardware, then it's nice to have that as your starting point, like MiSTeR has. But I can't say I dislike Analogue's sound, as I think in some cases it does sound better. Chalk that up to me not believing that the original hardware was perfection to begin with, and the ability to adjust to taste is, IMO, way more important than "PERFECT" audio out of the box. Having said all that, sound is but one example where I can't help but think that having so many people working on the MiSTeR project is a huge advantage. Not only do you have multiple people attacking a project, with fresh eyes and unique opinions, but you also get the benefit of continuous updates. The last jailbreak for the Super Nt was in August of 2019. Does this mean that the Super Nt is already perfect and requires no more tweaking? Of course, maybe Kevtris doesn't have the time to work on a new jailbreak firmware for the Super Nt when he's working on the latest limited edition super expensive Nt firmware? Obviously there are priorities, and I'm sure the expensive box gets precedence over the less expensive boxes. Don't get me wrong, I love what Kevtris has done and I respect the hell out of him. And the Super Nt is pretty awesome. I think his work is outstanding. But I can't fathom a universe where one man working on many cores will be able to keep up with an entire community working on those same cores. MiSTeR is just the far better option for anyone wanting lots of FPGA cores in an affordable device. For playing on a CRT, there are so many different options for the real hardware that I already have, including component, which will likely be the way I play most of my old games, whether I use MiSTeR or not.
I have both this and a av famicom with the nesrgb and the famicom is equal or better factoring in the minor audio inaccuracies in the noir. So id say the nesrgb is best for crt users or those with an ossc setup. Barring ossc or need for crt support, I would honestly recommend the avs over this. My controller ports on my noir have some issues, not to mention the shitty nes cartridge slot wiggle issue.
Looks like this video is finally applicable to me lol. I don't know if I should be ecstatic or horrified that this $500 NES is sitting on my desk right now, but here we go!
I really want something like this (well more like the Super NT Mini as US$500 is a lot) for the Playstation and Playstation 2. They're my 2 favourite consoles, so I would buy them immediately.
I own a Noir but my favorite FPGA NES clone? The RetroUSB AVS. Still available, nicely priced and the best physical design. It looks and feels like a real 1980s product.
[Try4ce] The AVS definitely hits this nice sweet spot of just feeling really practical and comfy. Some people don't like its design but I don't understand why. The Nt mini design isn't really for me - it's fun to shoot video of but I prefer my consoles plastic. Still praying for a NES from Analogue that matches their $200 units.
It would be great if Analogue and Kevtris could finally bring out an N64 FPGA, what with the lack of an N64 ‘Classic Edition’, N64’s absence so far from Switch Online, and with it being almost impossible to get hold of (the very costly) Ultra HDMI mod. I never bit the bullet for a Super NT or Mega SG, but an FPGA N64 with Ultra HDMI-like graphical improvements, that connected through HDMI to modern TVs and had the ability to play PAL and NTSC carts would be an instant buy for me.
Just got mine this week. It sure took a good few months but I am happy I finally got it. I couldn't waste the money to buy on the first release but I could this time so am happy I got it with the improvements.
I only ever used the CopyNES feature once, and that was to dump an exclusive Homebrew title I bought a while back called U.X.O., or Unexploded Ordinances. It's basically a unique version of Minesweeper for the NES with freaking fantastic music! Figured I would dump it so I didn't have to pull out the cart every time I wanted to play it, as it's not a publicly available ROM and hasn't been dumped/shared online before. And no, I am not going to do that myself.
Very informative video. Unfortunately it was above my budget at pre-order and even more so now. I'm having a blast with the MiSTer FPGA though. I'm more of a NeoGeo fan than NES. EDIT: I had a change of heart on the cost and grabbed three of them during the last release. Now if I can find a decent price on the Mega SG.
I just popped for the Retro USB AVS - I’m not going to try to convince people that it’s better than the NT mini, but it does a great job at below half the cost (Analogue have hidden costs like crazy shipping prices, especially over seas which is me). It would be nice to have the extra cores, though I’m only really worried about the Atari one - I have the Mega SD and Super NT which give me the others. For NES games themselves I don’t feel you need all the features of the NT mini. When the new run came out I did consider it, I could have sold the AVS to cover some of the cost, but I just decided it wasn’t worth the trouble and money. I’m excited about the Duo thought, I will be doing my best to get hold of one of those, I just don’t understand why Analogue have to do limited runs of consoles now.
The N8 Pro, when set to the "Famicom Original" preset for expansion audio balance, performs the same as the Noir's simulated expansion chips. Now, can't really say which one is closer to the real hardware, perhaps the Noir's is a bit better for some chips. For FDS and Namco expansion audio games via N8 Pro, you'd want to enable the filtering for cartridge audio.
“Disable Looped Noise” sounds like the way Hi-Def NES originally shipped. I even have a video of it where the dog only barks once in Duck Hunt (supposed to bark three times). Kevtris fixed it pretty long ago but I don’t think he fixed the issue I showed near the end of Ninja Gaiden.
I realize this will probably not be seen, but does anyone know if you can use the SNES30 8bitdo on this? Its surprisingly difficult to come by a snes to nes controller adapter, and I've heard mixed things elsewhere.
Mine arrived two days ago and it's absolutely brilliant. I honestly love it. Watching now, please don't ruin this for me! LOL EDIT | Finished watching. Whew. That was fun. Also, used your suggested settings and even made this beast a better machine! Thanks guys.
Can someone post a list of the featured games in the video? There are some i never seen before, and i can't find a list of the games in the description links
I really don't understand Analogue over the past year. They continue to design great products. But seem to intentionally short the stock for some reason. Like I get that you're a boutique company that can't afford to overstock your products, fine. But A) That's the whole point of pre-orders, so you can increase your run size to match demand and B) They sell out within an hour of opening so clearly they aren't producing enough.
I really hate it. But they seem to be taking more inspiration from "Supreme" than "Sony", to put it that way. They want their brand to be scarce, limited, only short runs to a few "lucky" people who managed to grab the product before they move onto the next. Limited runs at premium prices. Build up a reputation of being exclusive. It really sucks. Can't think this is driven by anything else than arrogance and greed.
@@odinsplaygrounds I'd be willing to bet they don't want to grow out of control. We've seen other startups or Kickstarters etc. where they did a little too well and couldn't keep up and disappointed people.
I noticed that you have a 8bitdo 2.4ghz dongle connected to your MiSTer. Can you use any 2.4ghz controller type with it or do you just use it for the m30?
