And after that, Creative assembly (the developper of total war) made Alien Isolation a true love letter to the first Alien movie and a great survival-horror.
I refuse to call the 360/PS3 retro. My definition for retro is if games were made for arcades in mind. The market shifted drastically to console development after that. We need a new term for the 2000's.
That one's actually true to the technical manual for the Aliens franchise. The mags for the Pulse Rifle COULD go to 99, but due to feeding issues its suggested to only load them to 95.
the pulse rifles in game are a different variant with more power but less rounds in the can BUT you can find hudson's pulse rifle which has 95 rounds in the can and 5 round burst
It's hard to express just how mind numbing this game was on stream, but I'll try by explaining the fact that for a large portion of the stream the chat stopped caring about the actual game or anything relevant, and instead started to debate which alien in sci-fi would give the best b---------.
I got it for five bucks on steam many years ago and it supported game pad so I enjoyed myself. Certainly not appreciable as an aliens game but as a way to waste some time it was fine.
@@battlion507 duke nukem forever, isn't his fault they took it over to release the game. so they could stop the studio he used to work for from going out of business. Duke nukem forever is solely the responsibility of the guy in charge of it for 20 years.
4:50 The demo you are showing I believe was revealed in E3 2011. I remember being amazed and so hyped for the game to be released. Years later I learned that the "gameplay" was actually pre recorded and the person was just acting like they were playing the game in real time.
Not to defend the dumpster fire, but pre-recorded demos aren't that unusual for E3. A funny side-note, I remember Uncharted 4 had a live E3 demo that bugged out as soon as it started so they had to switch to a pre-recorded version.
The mismanagment and redirection of funds was so disgusting and a disservice to gamers, and fans of the alien franchise. I guess its fine if you like border lands but it is still scummy.
@@josesosa3337 looking into this, I do feel sad for Alien fans. Why is it so hard to make a good Aliens, or AVP, game? And looking that they took the money to make Borderlands 2 and DNF, makes me guilty. And look how that turn out. DNF bombed so bad that it is dead. And seeing that Gesrbox won't give up the IP for some reason, good luck seeing a revival.
@@pancholopez8829 the best we can hope for is better games by better developers and support the good games that are coming out. Sadly, being dissapointed is part of life.
@PUPPET MASTER yea. Duke, while a product of his time, can be resurrected to show why he was awesome. Look how it turned out for Doom. I would say Wolfenstein, but Colossus and Youngblood did do way to much damage for the franchise. And then there's the PC culture around Gearbox, but correct me if I'm wrong. I don't trust them with another Duke Nukem game AT ALL.
If you want a good aliens game but are nit picky about old graphics, definitely give AVP 2010 a go, its a hidden gem, despite its obviously glaring issues.
I am going to say we have gotten slow due to people losing interest but if you are active others will be active. Here is the link for anyone who wants to join. discord.gg/NZZ39xx
You should review Brothers in Arms Hells Highway. Its underated compared to the others. Also Troy Baker voices the main character. I think it was his first big voice gig?
@@DCGMatthew1 He did? I'll have to go back and see. I wonder if Nolan North is in there somewhere? Also now that THQ Nordic own Gearbox. We might finally get a Brothers in Arms game.
Same i might get some hate for this but when I got this on 360 it was my favorite game and still is to this day. I also met my friends on that game too tho
Same with Duke Nukem Forever. No, it's not a particularly good game and certainly not what we were expecting but believe it or not, there is fun to be had with DNF. I think the reason why it got so hated aside from the overwhelming hype is that people just simply weren't interested in Boomer Shooters as the time. The late 2000s and early 2010s was when the Dude-Bro military shooter genre completely dominated the market. If you weren't playing Call of Duty, then you were playing Battlefield and vice versa. 2011 just happened to be the year where Military Shooter peaked in popularity with releases like Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
I think part of the reason why DNF failed aside from it being a mediocre shooter is that it came out at the exact wrong time. The late 2000s and early 2010's was the era of Dude-Bro monster energy drinking military shooter. This was the era where Call of Duty and Battlefield just completely dominated the market. It was just unavoidable. 2011 happen to be the year where the genre peaked in popularity. 2011 also had Call of Duty: MW3 and Battlefield 3.
...my parents did the same with Pac Man for the Atari 2600 when I was a wee lad. I'm not sure whether you or I got the worst end of the stick with that.
I love play it too. But that game is buggy. Not that I am saying something new. Actually I do enjoy it. If that game wasn't handled that could have been much better game.
Colonial Marines made me really appreciate AVP 2010. That game has it's flaws, for sure, but I really enjoyed the Marine campaign in that game and there were parts that actually had me scared. Ok that's not a super difficult thing to do, but Colonial Marines never came close to unnerving me.
Borderlands 2 was made with the funds of this game... A soul by another soul. Gearbox makes really good games but this was so fishy from them. I do not wonder why sega must hate them too much.
yeah. A shitty game is unfortunate, but a shitty game that started out on track to be a really awesome game, and was killed by mismanagement? that's a tragedy
@@maboilaurence8227 Duke nukem isn't gearbox's fault. They took over a project that was 10 years past due finished it, put out the door to stop a studio from going out of business.
@@RusticRonnie That's not an excuse to take its budget away from it. Yes, the game had few chances of succeeding, but that doesn't mean you can just half ass it and still sell it to the market, it's just wrong.
@@RusticRonnie no lies detected. The original creator should've just released regardless of whatever state it was in n call it a day. I doubt it would be a terrible experience have it orginal released was back in the early 2000s
Another thing about the gunplay is that the muzzle sway doesn't matter, because all guns shoot to the center of the screen and not the crosshair. A LOT of games do this, and i don't know why.
I was a total sucker and an Aliens simp, so like an absolute mug I bought the special edition with Sgt Apone and Drake as multiplayer skins. That was the last time I ever pre-ordered a game. Despite everything I actually had a lot of fun with the multiplayer... for about a week before the player base nosedived.
funny thing about the weapon sway, where the reticle/sight is aiming isn't where your bullets will go. they'll simply go to the center of the screen, so when you readjust your sight to compensate for the weapon sway, you'll miss.
I love Aliens as a movie as it is an awesome sequel to a classic, though over the years I wish there had been a couple of changes such as no queens and just egg morphing instead (it makes the creatures just more alien). My major complaint with it however is how it changed the creature, by making it more like an angry bug and cannon fodder I think it reduced how threatening it is. Now it could be mowed down by the dozens. I don't think all future games should be like Alien Isolation which was a pretty good game at the time in which the creature is invulnerable. Rather I think there should be more a middle way between Alien and Aliens when it comes to game portrayal of the creature. It can be wounded and even killed, but it takes a lot of effort as the creature is cunning, fast, and will retreat when overwhelmed. If you actually want to kill it you have to chase it down but this only increases the chances that it will ambush you. So you have to choose between keeping it at bay but it slowly wearing you down, or try to kill it permanently but risk facing it in a place where it has the advantage.
I remember seeing the trailer for this game on Adult Swim in my middle school year. At the time, my stepdad had gotten me into the Alien films, I had AvP on my PS3, and I played Aliens: Infestation on my Nintendo DS. When my stepdad saw the final product of this game, he was upset that it ruined my love of the franchise
Great job with the review. This is one of the few reviews out there that I feel like properly addresses the problems with game and disappointment without overly exaggerating how bad the game is. It’s really tiring to hear the “worst game of all time” narrative that completely ignores games like hunt down the freeman. I’ll always agree with it’s the most disappointing game but it’s so mediocre it doesn’t even make me directly angry. To me it’s such a boring game that “worst of all time” implies that it’s remarkably bad and it’s not even that. It’s just flat out bad and boring.
i would really love if the team behind isolation made an colonial marines-type game. or one that was more action heavy. imagine the a.i. alien from isolation but with a pulse rifle. i think they would nail the whole, holding off until you barley escape and your number thin aspect of the movie.
damn speaking of passionless games you should do a review of RE3 remake, clearly a somewhat decent/ok game that had absolutly no love and personality put into it. well, compared to the original
I traded Halo 4 for Aliens Colonial Marines at gamestop upon release which I don’t regret til this day. Aliens has always been in my top 3 favorite films since I was a kid.
@@Jarekthegamingdragon I played the game’s multiplayer in its prime and the community was great along with the modes plus the customization was fun to mess around with. not to mention the added bonus that i was apart of the Roblox colonial marines at the time so I also played with a few of the members of that group on the xbox 360 port and met one of them irl after we would play A:CM daily because he lived a town over. We always had fun finding bugs on our own in the game like clipping out of the maps. As for Halo 4 I still can’t play that wreck today on MCC. I had to play it through with one of my friends on legendary in 2019 and couldn’t stand it. It’s a big rivalry for me on if Halo 4 or 5 is worst because the multiplayer on 5 is amazing in it’s current state but the story is 10x worse. while 4 to me seems depressing and void of life at every turn.
Hey. Hey, Jerek. Remember when you reviewed the Snow Wolf Pulse Rifle on your airsoft account and said you were excited for Colonel Marines? Good times.
i remember playing thru this game all the way on the PS3 a year ago. yeah it sucked, the weapons had too much sway and were very inaccurate. the sawed off double barrel shotgun was kinda fun, but you had to pay for it (it was only $1 though) and it fired both barrels at once, woulda preferred an option to fire one barrel at a time
I got the achievement for beating the game on the hardest difficulty by doing a true pro-gamer move; run past all the enemies. There are few moments where you actually have to kill the aliens or goons. The vast majority of the campaign is made on seemingly only simple triggers.
@@matteodelapaz1698 I did it on Xbox 360, so most likely not. However, if I remember correctly you should be able to still do it due to how levels are constructed. Most mission end triggers are simple waypoints (mission ends when the player is present in the trigger area). I don't believe the code patch addressed that, so I think only the enemies are more difficult.
I remember buying this game on launch and the guy at the counter reminding me that I had 7 days to return it, "return it..?" I said, "Yeah...a *few* people have been bringing it back" Oh god we played 30 minutes and took it straight back
After I watched those clips of AvP 2010, I checked steam to see what the price was and found out that the complete editions of both AvP and Aliens: Isolation were on sell together for about $15. I mean talk about a steal
This looks like a case of bait and switch. They probably had better builds of the game that once had all the demo elements but then they were like "nope, change it and cut costs, we dont want to spend too much on resources because we spent too much on paying actors!"
I have both Aliens and Aliens Vs. Predator 3. I play more AVP3 then CM, just cause I can have that Alien movie vibe while playing as the Rookie, the Predator and Specimen 6. CM just leaves me wanting more. Also, now that you said Bioshock, have you done a review of the Bioshock games? Don't remember if you did or not.
Yeah big difference in the lighting, atmosphere, and the bioscanner feeling like your heartbeat and a constant reminder that you are in danger, you could be surrounded.
Kill me on the spot but while everybody hated that game, I found it started draging me in after 2 hours of playing. I played it from beginnning to end twice overall with a 3-4 years pause between that. And I think honestly that -while it wasn't what we wanted- it is not a bad game overall.
3 things I remember from aliens colonial Marines 1.) The multiplayer was pretty alright. The escape game mode could be a lot of fun, or an absolute nightmare depending on the braincells of the randoms. The rest of the modes were OK at best and balance was good (except for the bull Xeno and smart gun scope for DMR). Player customization was pretty good too. 2.) The one level where you gotta be sneaky and quiet was fantastic on your first run. It was basicly discounted dollar store alien isolation. But unlike A:I, the first run is all you get. Absolutely no replay value for that level or the rest of the campaign 3.) Horde survival mode was God awful
I just finished this game for the first time. Difficulty: "Hardened". I am such a big fan of Aliens and I wished it was far better that it actually was. Forgettable and repetitive. They tried some new tricks but they didn't work for me. It had some fine moments and tense scenarios but overall I felt disappointed. In my opinion the game could have been better if: - you had scarce ammunition all around but the weapons were much more powerful - you had fewer xenomorphs but more intelligent and deadlier - they did something to show how vulnerable you can be without making the gameplay frustrating - if they had to add human enemies at least add some combat andriods
Back in the day, I played this one day before release day, I had an Xbox 360 with LT 3.0 and I bought a pirated copy, that was when I was at high school and it was impossible to afford an original copy, good that I only spent like 4 bucks on it
Acm overhaul did improve aspects of the game and make it better on pc. But it still could have been so much more and better. Its on sale now and potentially worth it just to experience it with the mod.
Sega launch Alien Isolation ... and the diference from colonial marines is so big... A isolation show love in that game... the atmosfere, the sound, and the alien... that how an alien game should be done
ah yes co-op... that will turn it into a real horror. the whole Aliens Colonial Marines looks like call of duty i mean... Call of Duty®: Black Ops II was released around 2012 so it was still very popular franchise in that time. they really tried to turn alien game into cod clone
I remember playing the multiplayer at PAX East one year. Honestly we thought it was just because it wasn't supposed to be a completed build. If only we knew.
I’m not going to lie I had a lot of fun playing this game on PS3 when it first came out. I got it on launch and beat the campaign on its hardest difficulty and put hours and hours into the multiplayer. It’s bad of course, but for some reason I just loved it.
Oh, god, Colonial Marines. I made the mistake of buying this poor man's F.E.A.R. earlier this year (IDKW, though). I actually began my attempt to play through this (after fixing the Teather bug) with Stasis Interrupted, the game's Downloadable Expansion Pack. Gameplay wise, it's a meh (definitely better than the main game), but writing wise, oh god. It felt like a butthurt Aliens fanboy's attempt to write the events of Alien 3 and the expanded universe material that followed out of canon by retconning the opening crash so that Hicks was replaced by some other marine, and that he attempted to save Ripley from committing suicide. As a true (read: sane and healthy) fan of the first three Alien movies, although it wasn't as insulting as Covenant, it still baffled me to no end. And then I tried to play the main game and OH GOOD GRIEF. Basically, you're better off playing Alien: Isolation and the Aliens versus Predator games than this. I know that the person reading this comment is a reasonable adult who knows not to buy crap, and so it's mandatory to stick to those. I only recommend Aliens: Colonial Marines if you're curious. Or if you're a butthurt Aliens fan, if you want to see canon take it up the ass. Or... for those of you with short attention spans, let me put it another way: *GET AWAY FROM THIS GAME YOU DUMB BITCH!!!!*
The thing about Gearbox is they didn’t reach serious praise until Borderlands and basically haven’t since. If games you publish receive better than games you actually develop under your main house that is a serious problem. Battleborn, Duke Nukem Forever, We Happy Few, Aliens Colonial Marines. Publishing games really helped them with me. It’s clear at this point that without Borderlands they’re just a one hit wonder. I would never want games published to be received better than games developed but that is exactly what has happened with them. Just saying
I played this game sooo much back in 2013 when it first came out...looking back, I really only enjoyed it because it was said to be "canon" to the Alien movies at the time, and I thought I had to like it in order to get the "whole story" or something...I was like 13 alright :D I just remember all my friends saying it sucked and never wanting to play this with me hahah
I see it now more than back then when I was kind of a white knight for it, although i clearly stated on the forums that there was so much more potential in coop mechanics and smart ai, i mean in 2008, an EA studio was able to make dead space where the necros were able to crawl into shafts and follow you to other rooms etc.. I wanted to like a:cm for some of it's atmosphere but to be honest, it was indeed underdeveloped and the aliens seemed to be made of green cheese, and the animations and gore came from a 90s classic. Lucky we had alien: isolation a year later and that was a total masterpiece! I hope aliens: fireteam elite will be a satisfying aliens universe recompence.
So I'm asking as a simple single player: is this game worth it? I've only played thru the AvP2 (which I loved with it's atmosphere, sound effects, lighting and gameplay) game but I just want to know if it's good, lamebrained fun. Same thing for AvP 2010, if anybody has an opinion to share. (EDIT); OK I coughed up a few bucks for it, so I will answer the question myself: the AvP 2010 is simply not as fun as the 2001 AvP2. The game is too hard to navigate and for some reason, the game doesn't seem to run very smoothly, especially when in contact with the Xenos. And I really don't like the 'melee' against the bugs. Aiming is a huge pain in the butt, too, and I don't recall any 'James Horner-ish' music either. I'm still early on in the campaign and I am not at all sure I'll press on.
Michael Biehn expressing foreboding about companies gobbling up beloved franchises to make money out of them without showing the love for the lore several years before Disney, CBS, Netflix, EA etc turned the dial upto 11 and declared F your feelings.
I remember reading magazine articles about this game... And that's about it. Funny how magazine articles and screenshots make even the crappiest games out there look far more interesting than they actually are.
I always try to see the fun in video games no matter how much the developers mess up with the story and even the mechanics. However this game tested my open mindedness. I don't think I even finished the game, it was the first time I genuinely dislike a video game.
I have a suggestion for a game: EA's Syndicate, released in 2010. Honestly I have really mixed feelings about it. It has a really cool visual style, the guns feel really punchy and the combat in general just feels heavy hitting and slick. But It's definitely not a great game; the story is... eh, the bossfights are annoying, etc, but it had enough personality that I figured someone who's as into shooters as you are might get some enjoyment out of it/find some charm that the reviewers back then brushed over.
About a month ago I played aliens colonial marines and at first it seemed like a great game. Until I saw how bad the friendly ai was in the campaign . I would be getting absolutely destroyed and the ai is just standing there shooting once or twice but not actually killing anything .I was the one doing all the work
Yeah the defence SECTION on hight dificulties was horrible, theses friendly are not very helpfull most of the time and the boss fightt with the mech was atrocious. i still like a bit the game.
I want buy it due to the discounts on STEAM, but I've limited money to spend and I always loved Alien saga. My plan is to buy Alien vs Predator and Alien Colonial Marines and I'm just checking if this game still alive its online servers
