My theory as to why Menken uses the minor seventh is because it's like you're reaching for the octave, but you just can't touch it yet.

Been watching your ANALYSIS videos for a few years now, and I think this is my favorite one! I really wish Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken would get to watch this!

OMG! I can't decide what I enjoyed more, the analysis of the song or the singing! I so love this! When I go back to Toronto, I will come and see your shows...

So I came to this video by two converging avenues: my love for this song vis a vis the live performance of it by a quartet called Ringmasters, and my love for the theory breakdowns that Rick Beato does. Love this analysis of the song. If you have a few minutes, I highly recommend looking up Ringmasters performance of their Notre Dame Medley because the arrangement does such an amazing job of vocally highlighting some of the great things you pointed out. Thanks so much for this video!

My favorite Disney song - I was so excited to see you covered it! Good catches on the internal rhyme and the parallels between the writers' other work!

Hi! I just want to thank you for sharing this analysis. I always enjoy certain songs and I get excited about how they progress, but I couldn’t really explain why, but watching this, I get it a bit now. This is amazing. Thank you.

Fantastic analysis. You put into words why I liked it so much but I could never really quite explain. I'm no musical theatre nerd like you. I knew that I loved the song, but I didn't know why. Thank you for breaking it down for me in a way I can understand!

It's such a beautiful song. One of the most complex musicals Disney had made. I'd love to hear you compare God Help the Outcasts and Someday, because they almost feel like they harmonize with and echo each other.

Although I had watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame as a kid, I had forgotten this song entirely until I listened to it on a Best of Disney complication CD. Not sure how because it's quite possibly my favorite Disney song now. Found this video because I've been greedily watching every analysis video I can find. Thanks for this one!

Thank you for sharing your amazing talent and knowledge! I am awed by your wonderful voice and musicality, and the intricate way you guide us through this, which is one of THE musical theatre 'I Want' songs and one of my personal favourites. Michael Arden of course sung this wonderfully and really embodied the hope and sadness of the character. I love your observation that Quasimodo takes something dark and turns it into something beautiful, and how this is so gorgeously displayed in the lyrics and especially the music. A new enthusiastic subscriber here! Best wishes for your own career and performances :)

13:55 It's funny that you say that, because I was thinking about this song earlier and the thought came to me that it was kind of like a male version of "Defying Gravity" in the way that it's sung.
