The thing about Dr. Anderson’s testimony was that the accusation of violence by JD only came up when she was seeing the therapist by herself, which was never brought up or confirmed by JD either in joint sessions or his solo sessions. She also noted that AH had asked if she would have an advantage if she called the police before filing for divorce and was noted to be strategizing. Personally, I think the “gave as good as she got” referred to verbal arguments, especially if he had no idea what AH had said in her solo sessions. The incongruent bruises that showed up less than a week after AH’s musings about calling the cops seem to point to the probable hoax. AH has been caught in too many major lies in and out of court to not at least consider that these abuse allegations are completely false, or she’s distorted his attempts at self defense.

Probably money? Or access? Or also being manipulated by their celebrity clients to keep working for them in exchange for all that. It's probably the same principle behind how some otherwise professional people turn into enablers for celebrities because it's basically the job they got hired for. Person that comes to mind is the doctor that regularly (& illegally) administered anesthesia drugs to Michael Jackson because he asked for them. After MJ died, that guy went to jail and lost his license. Basically, I think if you're in the orbit of a celebrity that big, they pretty much ask you to do anything and everything for them and you pretty much end up doing it even if it violates your practice's usual standards and ethics. Not giving an excuse. Just theorizing on what leads some people to do certain things.

One point I wish you had brought up… actually two. One, that the therapist stated clearly that amber only spoke of Johnny’s violence when he wasn’t present. And there was no mention of them talking through it in couple sessions. Not to say it didn’t happen, but it was not mentioned or clarified to the court. Two, the fact that mutual abuse is something that rarely happens. There are victims of abuse who do engage in maladaptive behavior because they have been pushed to their limit and need to either defend themselves or try to self preserve the best they can. But there is going to be someone who has more control/power over the other person. That person is clearly Amber, as basically agreed by the therapist herself. Johnny was triggered by Amber’s abusive behavior, he didn’t cope with it well. Because no one who is subjected to abuse does.

Dr. grande, I would like to respectfully disagree with some of your conclusions. 1) I do not think that this trial is going better for Ms. Heard. Up to this week, through the mas media and the Uk libel case, she has cast her self in the role of blameless, perfectly innocent victim, who was under the control of her tyrannical husband, who would terrorize her and abuse her, while she was too frightened and small and week to respond. After this week and Dr. Anderson deposition, it is clear this is not the case. She was the leading, provoking, aggressive, more frequently violence initiating part of this couple, if not the single aggressor. On top of that she was strategizing and already preparing herself for filing a domestic violence report to gain upper hand in upcoming divorce. So, although, Dr. Anderson’s testimony was damaging for both of them, she did not say anything about Mr. Depp that was not already discussed in the public and many new, unfavorable things for Ms. Heard. 2) When discussing whether an actual malice can be reasonably inferred from her behavior, please consider the fact that if Mr. Depp’s side demonstrates that she faked bruises, altered photos and described events of domestic violence and injuries, which objectively could not have happen, then actual malice is definitely present. These would be actual acts of fraud, hence actual malice is inferred. 3) And the most important thing, I completely disagree with your qualification of this trial as a show or movie or gig. It is about domestic abuse or alternatively false accusations of domestic abuse and their impact in the persons life. Disregarding Ms. Heard and/or Mr. Depp and their suffering from the first resp. the latter, only because they are rich and famous, is simply wrong.

Do not weigh in on something you're neither academically nor professionally qualified to weigh in on, please, you are here dealing damage to victims with those conditions. Both men and women. I wonder what the odds are that Johnny Depp changed who he was; his character after meeting Amber? It's been known for a very long time that Johnny has substance issues, but no previous partner has ever said he's been physically abusive, even while intoxicated. Amber however has been previously arrested for domestic violence with a prior partner. Psychologically it doesn't fit that his personality would completely change. I can see a relationship where one partner thrives on constant drama and the other partner only being able to take so much. I myself was in a relationship that was verbally and physically abusive. I would sometimes fight back after being hit and we'd end up in a brawl with one another. I never started the physical aspect but I would engage after being hit or thrown. Since that relationship I have never been in another relationship like that one, because it isn't who I am or who I want to be.

I am glad you broke your cycle. I knew a man (he grew up next door to me in a large family and I was his next door neighbor, he was the first to marry. The couple then moved on the other side of me. I babysat their children. The wife spent a lot of time with me.. she constantly talked about her Italian temper and how it wasn't her fault. The man divorced her. He told people that she would throw her iron at him. No one believed him. She then married another young neighbor, who like the first man was a great passive man. It was a short marriage.. he talked to a woman at a party while she held court with other men. She started the fight as soon as they got home..she ended the argument by sticking her sewing scissors in his chest. He died. I was a close, overhead neighbor of one couple and then a young man hiding out while trying to divorce. First couple I would hear her yelling abuse at the husband and then it would end either much being thrown. The sweet guy who was on the run didn't live below us long. His wife found out where he lived. We witnessed her breaking in thru a window since he wouldn't open his door. It ended in a huge fight with her even smashing a 100 gallon fish tank. Ii was horrible. We couldn't call the cops. It was a time when the police would have arrested him. We saw the destroyed apartment in the morning. He then left and found a new place to hide and by night my now exhusband helped him move. We were sad to see him go. He was much loved in our apartment complex.

I don’t believe it was him changing his character, so much as him reacting to the abusive nature Amber had in the relationship. It triggered him, the therapist said that. Which in that case, leads me to believe he was the victim of the abuse. Yes, he may have reacted and tried to defend himself, but that doesn’t make him an abuser. A good way to think about it, is if the abuser did not act the way they did the victim would not have reacted. You kick a puppy enough times it will bite you… that’s not the puppy’s fault. The key to figuring out which came first, is who takes responsibility and how does the person react when called out on abusive behaviors? Do they lash out, blame the other person for making them act that way, belittle them and name call? Or do they apologize and take responsibility for their part in the action? There is audio of this playing out in their own words, and it is clear who the aggressor was… and it wasn’t Johnny.

Many addicts will actually stay in abuse situations because they have low self-esteem and will justify other's negative behaviors towards them. Throw a narcissist in there and they become an easy target to someone who preys on emotions and vulnerabilities. They can easily be gaslit & manipulated because of their altered states. I was in active addiction for over a decade and a lot of people (mostly other addicts, but some non-users) took advantage of me and others in the same situation. I've met a lot of violent and abusive addicts/drunks, yes, but I've also met many more who never fought back and let people steamroll right over them. Johnny said there had been "violence" and "she gave as good as she got". Having extensively read and covered the whole thing ( I mean all the court documents from Uk which was a crazy farce in that the judge decided to avoid all evidence and just decide Ms Heard was right) and much much more ; I have the following comments to make. I think he was actually trying to cover for Amber and protect her when he said there had been violence. I think 99% of it came from her. I honestly think she is borderline and narcissistic. I can imagine myself saying what he said having somehow got wrapped up in a toxic situation with someone. She worked on him to get him and rushed him into a mariage. She is outwardly beautiful and I believe is the kind of person who is appealing at first; but as you get to know them the craziness comes out. I am not saying Johnny is a saint. My reckoning is that he possibly slapped her once ; but to be honest she was constantly provoking him. The hostage situation and all of that have been shown to be total make believe. There are tapes of the situation. She had thrown a bottle at Johnny and cut his finger off. They had to find it to put it back on. It was Johnny who had to go to hospital and Amber though having claimed all sorts of abuse had no injuries. She has continually added to her stories of abuse with the latest thing being that there was also s*****l abused byJohnny. She claimed in many television appearances that it was not about money and she had donated all of her divorce settlement to two charities. This has since been proved not to be true. She never made a donation. The only donation they had was the first one that Johnny made before she asked for the money directly from him so she could donate but she never did. There is a lot more to this; she's a real piece of work. I agree that it is airing their dirty laundry. I think Johhny was seduced by her and it only evolved after some time what a narcissist she was. He actually said in the end that he realised that she was "never a real person". I have had the same traumatising experience myself but from a much younger age. I think he was manipulated by a borderline narcissist. He really loved the person he thought he had met and then to realise it was all unreal and that was not her ; that she just "an act"; I can relate to that, so I have sympathy for him. Whether the court case will work for him i'm not sure but this is evidence of how a borderline narcissist can wreck numerous lives and careers.

I don’t know. I think every personality responds differently to abuse. I thought she was lying until I saw the video of Depp before he knew he was being filmed. I think being in a relationship with someone like that can bring out really ugly things just to have to fight back or defend. I was surprised when I saw the video because everyone acted like Depp was so innocent and never violent, when in the video he clearly has a violent angry rage. Just such a short video reveals how emotionally abusive Depp was and the assumedly constant abusive dynamics in general. Heard might still be lying about some things but I get the sense there was definitely a huge amount of emotional abuse and that Depp was the one with the upper hand. This is very speculative, but I think abused people sometimes do messed up things to try to regain power or fight back and then they’re blamed for being abusive when really it was all in defense from the real abuse. Not that it excuses their behavior but often times in those relationships there’s no possibility for recourse and you just go insane if you don’t get out soon enough. I think she tried to stay too long trying to hold on.

Terminal victim is just a very ignorant way of describing someone with vulnerable narcissim or dependant personality disorder. These people classically end up in abusive relationships. They can be abused easily due to their self esteem issues, as well as other traits that make them more liable to domestic abuse. Her psych history, coming from an abusive household cements that. He has unresolved issues from previous relationships, and while I don't remember how he broke up with Winona, I remember him saying it was his fault. Seems like he thinks he's unworthy of love, meanwhile she'd cling onto anything just to get his attention and affection (Even when her actions are sure to result in the exact opposite). This was the definive conclusion of a relationship like this, where one partner is pathologically attached, and another is pathologically sadistic. Pain, in excessive amounts, was probably inflicted on her because of how she was wired. And he was never going to give her what she wanted, even though he saw that it was driving her crazy. He kept doing exactly the opposite of what was going to de-escalate. Because what she needed was excessive love and attention, and what he was doing was just telling her that she's not enough, is crazy, and then playing hero by "walking away" from her after metaphorically throwing a grenade at her. He's emotionally abusive, she's pathologically clingy, and they're both prone to physical abuse. Again, I've said it before, it's a match made in hell.

13:20 In any relationship both partners are partially responsible. If what Dr. Todd Grande said here were true, there would never be anyone who could claim DV of any gender. Everyone has the ability to leave if not at the time than after the very first incident. Just to be clear this is a one-way copout that he would never use on a female claiming DV. It allows him to say that in the case of a male being abused he is still responsible for the abuse. I wonder how many times Dr. Todd Grande has not used this line of 'reasoning' with male victims of female perpetrators and how many times he has used it with female victims of male perpetrators. He is arguing because JD isn't absolutely perfect, he on some level deserves to be abused. To be clear no one deserves to be abused even if on some level they are partially responsible for not removing themselves from the situation. If your relationships with one person is harming yourself or others, it is time to LEAVE IT! It is difficult to recognize sometimes, and no one is perfect. Doctors in the mental health professions should not be looking for ways to blame people who find themselves in such a situation. That is another abusive situation and no amount of credentials excuses it.

I think it is important to know that during the testimony of Johnnys therapist the following day, he lied to the therapist and said he cut his finger tip-off, and took responsibility for Ambers's behaviour. We know this was not true, witnesses confirmed that Amber cut his finger tip off with a bottle. . Given this, any projection of the abuse being mutual conflict should not be taken seriously. We know that victims are manipulated by the abuser into thinking that they elicited the abuse and "deserve it". There is NO history of Johnny engaging in physical violence with anybody at any point in time. We have multiple people conferring that Amber is physically abusive. Even her assistant was manipulated into working for nothing, and tolerated physical and verbal abuse and never participated in it. It seemed very obvious to me that Amber had engaged in manipulative behaviour with the therapist by painting a picture of this being a case of mutual abuse. She seemed very aware of how the therapy could play out in her divorce and asked the therapist specific questions about how this would all play out in her divorce. @@phoebe543 Welp, she may have not made an effort to de-escalate. But it sounds like he initiates or maintains topics that she finds painful. From what's discussed regarding her over attachment and desire to be "his one and only", seems like he really didn't wish to outwardly say that he loves her more than Winona or Vanessa. This is an issue I personally had with a former boyfriend. He knew it hurt the crap out of me, but he would always say that he loved his ex, and never said he loved me. It's also his fault that his former relationship ended because he was very abusive to that girl who was very sweet and patient with him (I was just too blind to see it, I wanted to believe that she was the problem and not him). So basically he abused the ex, and then used the ex to abuse me. It drove me bananas I swear. I genuinely loved him (I have never felt a deeper regret over anything I did, but hey I forgave myself!) and his style of being with somebody revolved around beating them down in a very sadistic fashion. He would remain calm and it would seem like he was trying to de-escalate, but it was like punching someone in the gut and then pretending like it doesn't matter and that I was making a big deal out of nothing. Seems like Amber really was desperate to be loved by JD, to have him love her in the same manner that she loved him. She's exceptionally beautiful, and is very charming. Thing is, seems like she has abandonment issues and he has a very unhealthy relationship style. Winona can say that he was great, but again I don't know what happened to break that relationship up. And it seems like whenever he messed up, he feels like somehow he's making it up to the people he hurt by acknowledging that he messed up to his subsequent partner (I guess it's guilt from moving on, problem is, those relationships are not about him). But imagine hearing that from someone you love, that the person they were with before you is the one they truly loved, and if they didn't ***k it up with them, then there was no way they would be with you. Like, why are you with me then? Go try to get that person back! Or is your ego so big that you'd rather torture yourself and me for mistakes that you made but your toxic masculinity wouldn't let you really try to fix?! Hearing that you're the one they settled for, even though there are people out there willing to step in front of a bus for you, while you are the kind of person who would step in front of a bus for them. Again, how gutting would that be? She may have abandonment issues, but he doesn't know how to relationship, and it's cruel. Edit: I actually thought their marriage was a sham PR stunt. No this was the real deal, they just have a lot of baggage. And imo, Depp is the more ***ked up out of the two. She just wanted him to love her, ironically even when they fought. Meanwhile, he was getting high and not working through his problems. I think the age discrepancy played a huge role there, Depp has had very serious relationships before that lasted long and failed; which he didn't seek therapy for after they ended (to my knowledge) but instead just became dependent on substances. Amber, was just too blind to see it.

@leen khlifat, liars always tell elaborate stories, and as a result have to get more and more elaborate, as they are forced to explain the inconsistencies that inevitably are a result of lying. You see this often when the real perpetrator of the crime is being questioned. This happens in everyday situations too. Children often automatically do this which is why it's so important to correct our children with loving firmness. Never let them feel you won't stop loving them, let them know about forgiveness, but that to speak the truth is always vital. I digressed, sorry, but in contrast to a liar, a person who speaks the truth usually has a far less complicated story, without lots and lots of details, and the story never changes, nor has contradictions. The liar tells a very, very detailed story, in the hope that by knowing all these " true" details, they will convince you. How often have we thought that someone must be telling the truth because they know soooo much, that is, sooo many details!

With all due respect Dr. Grande, your analysis has me questioning how much experience you have working with victims of domestic abuse, narcissistic abuse and sufferers of trauma from domestic violence. From the comments I've read thus far, your words seemed to have triggered anyone who has found themselves in such dire circumstances. I speak from experience when I say, victims of DV have all been told to just keep their heads down, just move on, don't make waves, put a sweater on to hide that bruise, and that seems to be your advice to Mr. Depp. Yet, from everything I have heard, he has been the victim of abuse and needs to be heard. We all need to be heard. That was the point of Amber Heard's Op-Ed, was it not? That DV victims should not be intimidated and silenced? When an abuser can no longer abuse in person, they will result to the smear campaign, of which Mr. Depp is fighting. If he does not speak up, he will forever be labeled the villain of the story. Those of us who have been unfairly labeled, who have suffered similar abuse, we are all cheering for him. Don't ever invalidate a victim of abuse by telling them to just move on. It just adds to the pain. Depp needs his day in court and he's getting it, and fighting, in a way, for every man who has been victimized by a woman who knows he would not strike back.

She was saying things like 'it's a fair fight', 'i didn't deck you' and other stuff to him implying he was able to defend himself from her attacks. Now, I look back and realize I had a narcissistic mother & was imprinted with certain behaviors which I thought were “normal” but they were not & I was attracted to men who had those qualities (and abusive bosses as well). I also turned to alcohol to numb myself out from all the hurt inside me. Now, I look back & marvel at how I walked away from that relationship despite him begging me to come back & despite the fact that I still loved him. But I knew we were toxic. He was toxic. Reflecting what you said about Amber, and switching it round...if Johnny is partiality responsible then can he be the victim? I see how you missed saying that the therapist said, Amber admitted to hitting first. There's also the fact that DV can be just verbal. There's only one person who ended up in hospital, and no convincing photographic evidence of actual damage to Amber. Oh he hit as well. But I was told that we were as bad as eachother. He punched my stomach with both my pregnancies. Oh yes, I know what abuse is. My ex had a history of it from childhood. He would gaslight his parents, his siblings and his friends, none of them were passionately supportive like Isaac or Johnny's sister. With Johnny there's no history of abusive behaviour. With Amber there is history, her mother, her sister, her ex. She also tries to triangulate people, Jason Mamoa, Kevin Costner etc. I'm not a big fan of Johnny, and I thought him dreadful for beating his wife, until the words coming out of Amber's mouth convinced me that it's her. I listened to a reporter interview another reporter who is attending the trial. It sounds like there's a lot of alcohol abuse involved between the couple. So far JD has had good witnesses come forward with accounts. ie, JD's sister who said their mother was abusive and JD dealt with the mothers abuse by taking flight. It also sounds like JD has financial problems. It's a circus. AH claims she still feels love for JD. His behavior in the court room is stoic, she's more eye contact and smiles towards those in the court room. Both are putting on their best acting skills. it's too early in the trial to see where it's going.

To my mind, the most critical factor is that Johnny Depp's ex-wives came forward to say that he hadn't been abusive with them. I give that a high weight, because domestic abuse is usually a recurring pattern over the adult lifetime, not something that spontaneously emerges in middle age. In contrast, Amber Heard *has* been previously arrested for domestic violence in a prior relationship. This leads me to think that she's the prime driver of the toxicity in the relationship. Do you think Amber Heard could have Borderline Personality Disorder? Her intense fear of abandonment makes me wonder, because in that previously released audio of a discussion between them included a time Heard went ballistic because of Johnny Depp wanting to spend a few hours with a male friend without Heard being there. I'm not a psychologist, but that seems over-controlling. I suspect that if you did a Duluth Power and Control Wheel with each of them, Heard would be the one pinging a lot more categories than Depp.

What you say makes sense. Dr. Grande. However, Johnny Depp's career did suffer greatly as a result of Amber's op-ed. He was dismissed by Disney. So, at the risk of looking bad in the public eye, should he just take a back seat and not try to get justice for himself? To restore his reputation in his industry and recover some of his losses? I think you're wrong there. Also, I disagree that both parties were equally abusive. I think Amber Heard initiated most of the altercations and then cried wolf if Johnny defended himself. She also exaggerated and even fabricated his part in their physical battles. I feel this was deliberate on her part. Her intent was malicious and the desired result is definitely to damage her ex-husband's reputation. It's called revenge. Amber thought she could exact revenge with impunity. I watched her deposition of 2016 and have to say that she came through as a lying freak. As a victim of domestic violence myself, I could tell that she was acting a part. When you're abused, there is no way you can keep calm while describing abusive episodes. Amber did it like she was narrating a story of third parties. It was eerie to me and actually quite frightening. I believe the victim here is Johnny Depp. I hate to say it because I know that there are more abused women than men, but, yes, men can be victims of abuse, too. And, unfortunately, the scales tips heavily on the side of women when it comes to physical violence, so anything Amber says will be taken seriously while Johnny's would tend to be downplayed by virtue of his superior strength.

Vulnerable narcissist probably, those people often end up in abusive relationships because they really want to be loved. It's hilarious that everyone has been calling her a narcissist, but missed out on how this can be abused by a sadistic partner with unresolved issues from previous relationships. This is how it's coming off from what we're hearing now. I think this actually surprisingly makes her case better. It does prove that she's flawed, but in a manner where she can be taken advantage of. Her behavior is due to a desperate need for love and attention, to the point where she'd keep fights with him just to keep him engaged with her. With him, it does not sound like de-escalation anymore, it sounds like sadism, where he says something hurtful or initiates a fight, and after seeing how much in pain she is and that he did get a rise out of her, he'd walk away because "mission accomplished". Doesn't matter that he's calm, that actually makes it seem more sociopathic and deliberate. I don't think people ever considered that, but it honestly sounds more like a classic "battered wife" situation now. If he hadn't used substances I would have been more inclined to reconsider, but that's the thing about substance use, it can turn you into a really bad person. I don't think that's how he normally is, but he definitely has baggage that he needed to work through before marrying a woman who's so vulnerable she'd do anything to get his attention (Even when her efforts seem to clearly result in the opposite effect, or maybe the desired effect if hurting her was what he really wanted, consciously or subconsciously).

Sometimes I think victims of abuse end up subconsciously seeking and creating toxic and abusive relationships as adults. It goes back to Freud's theories on how our desires in a relationship reflect our childhood experiences as that brings us comfort in our adult lives. This could explain why two people who experienced bad childhoods often result in a bad romance.

It's called codependency, which is very common in unhealthy relationships. The difference is that Amber is a codependent narcissist. Depp is also codependent, but does not appear to have a toxic cluster b personality disorder like Amber does. This is also a good example of how not all people with an unhealthy childhood turn out to be intentionally abusive, but rather people who react to those who are doing the provoking. Narcissists are notorious for provoking people on purpose until the victim ends up reacting to the aggressor, so the aggressor can find a way to flip the blame around and onto the victim. Too many people use cases like these to show how women (men too) can lie about abuse so, we can not trust someone else’s experience. When I think back to how little support I got when I came out, I almost feel this hurt more than the abuse itself. It keeps future victims silent and even more opportunities for abuse occur bc these abusers go without punishment. We have a hard time being validated by society and Amber didn’t help.

i disagree completely. I think Johnny's side are presenting evidence and testimonies that shows amber's propensity to lie. Which could be the reason why their therapist testified that amber would only mention alleged abuse by johnny when she would visit her alone. She never brought up anything about johnny hitting her when they were BOTH there and johnny has a chance to address or deny. edit: one of their bodyguards has said that he found it odd that once he cooked a dish for thanksgiving dinner at johnny's house and amber was accepting compliments on that dish pretending she made it and never mentioned to the guests that someone else cooked it. another occasion was on her 30th birthday when johnny had a meeting with his financial advisors and texted amber that he would be late and was apologetic. More than one guest at party testified in the uk trial that when they asked where johnny was, amber told them that he was "upstairs refusing to come down" for her birthday. They testified they were confused when johnny eventually arrived through the apartment's door and not from "upstairs." Amber just had a habit of lying about small and insignificant things like cooking a dish as well as a habit of purposefully lying to people to make johnny look bad like when her guests asked about where johnny was during her birthday. Dr. Grande's analysis would be accurate if amber was someone truthful, but only mentioning abuse to their therapist when johnny was not there to defend himself, In my opinion, is just another snaky example of wanting him to look bad in front of others.

But I think Johnny Depp is the type that finds stability boring and in pursuit of something more exciting wound up with amber heard, someone who's had a tumultuous relationship history.
