Can you imagine, after enduring years of mental and physical abuse, completely ostracized by society and by self, finally coming to the realization (delusion) that you're actually above all of these people who tormented you so much, that you're a god among men and have power over life and death, only to have someone call you the Tooth Fairy?

Will Graham's comment about Francis in the book has always stuck with me: "As a child, my heart goes out to him. As an adult, he's irredeemable." I feel like that sentiment can apply to so many people - trauma profoundly shapes a person, but it's what you do with it that proves what kind of human being you are.
@sevenproxies4255
@sevenproxies4255 2 года назад
The thing is though, it is hard to imagine for a sane person the kind of destructive and compelling influence an insane mind may exert on someone afflicted. I don't think Francis was "merely" traumatized, since most traumatized people pull themselves up from it into normalcy again. His issue with Schizophrenia ran deeper and controlled him. How can one demand morals and ethics out of a person who is born to be unable to exhibit these abilities? It's like demanding a person born without legs to walk or run. That's not a defense of Francis' actions, and ultimately the world is a safer place with Francis being dead. He probably had to die, or at the very least be locked away from society forever. But at the same time, I think it's more fair to say that his condition was terrible rather than he being terrible. Had he been born without his mental deformity, things might've turned out differently. I think true evil comes more from those who are certainly born with the capacity and ability to lead good lives, but choose evil just to satiate some perverse urges or desires.

It just tracks better in a story. Making a big dragon into tiny flying around harmless fairy. Media not getting him that much is like ultimate disrespect in his mind. I'd almost agree with you if it wasn't for the fact that the writers had to include the backstory to Misha, which I believed ruined this whole concept. Because, while both Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs do go into great detail about the pathologies of Francis and Jame Gumb, explaining what made them resort to their actions, with Hannibal's case what makes him work is that he DOESN'T really have a pathology, let alone is suppose to have one. Sure, his certain traits such as his distaste for discourtesy and being a very picky eater. But why Hannibal is a cannibalistic psychopath is never really explained or really even hinted at, in the original first two novels, which was THE WHOLE POINT. He was written as less of a fleshed out character and more of a manifestation of evil itself. Kind of like Judge Holden (Blood Meridian). Someone who's beyond logic or explanation, not a puzzle that can be solved, he just is who he is. Lines like, "The psychologists call him a psychopath, they don't know what else to call him. (Red Dragon)" and "He's not some kind of vampire. They don't have a name for what he is. (Silence)", were meant to sum up who Hannibal is. Therefore, trying to make Hannibal Lector on the same league as Francis and Jame, strips from Hannibal this disturbing ambiguity, contradicting the entire essence of his character.

I loved the novel. That being said, two scenes from "Manhunter" are seared into my mind. Francis's reaction to Reba stroking the tiger. His expression is pure orgasm, seeing her acceptance and love for an apex predator. In the hotel when Will figures out that The Red Dragon has seen the films, his confidence, the inevitability, when he tells the evidence guy to peel back the label. Crawford reacts to Will with fear...and awe. Effing stunning acting! And the novel was not a page turner, it was a page burner. Compelling from cover to cover.

@@LadyAstarionAncunin I think it may be my favourite adaptation of the whole bunch, and that includes Silence of the Lambs. A lot of people criticise it for stripping back the novel to the essentials and not including some of the nuances, but I actually think it benefits the film in some ways, there was a reason they cut the Red Dragon tattoo for example, and I agree with that reasoning completely. Micheal Mann knew exactly what he was doing and he did a masterful job with it. Best Will Graham, best Francis Dolarhyde, and the best Hannibal -Lecter- Lecktor for my money, just slightly above Hopkins (who while I absolutely adore as Lecter doesn’t quite scare me as much as Cox’s more realistic and straight approach to the character) for me. And I don’t mind the changed ending that much either, the final climax is brilliant! If people really want to see the ending of the novel in a 1980’s film, then they should just watch the end of Dario Argento’s Opera because by his own admission he took it straight from (after apparently being frustrated by Manhunters ending) the Red Dragon novel haha!

Yeah there's a lot of contention in the psychiatric field regarding the two terms, but the general consensus comes down to the nature vs nurture debate. Essentially, psychopaths are born while sociopaths are created, a product of their environment. Making them more prone to impulsive behavior and emotional outbursts, so yes they are capable of empathy, albeit very selective. Psychopaths are completely devoid of empathy altogether.

Either you hide it because you know it’s wrong or you don’t because you don’t think you’re doing anything to be punished for. We all deal with urges of all kinds, my current urge being how delicious cinnamon rolls are, but even with something that mundane I can’t say it isn’t my fault if I grow a huge ass from eating too many. I know it’s wrong, I know there are consequences to my actions. Silly example but from the characters perspective, he had the urge to commit these crimes and let that urge win out over his conscience. And tried to hide the crimes. That’s what can be so fascinating about criminals, and I think as a society we want to blame something we can’t control because the idea it can be controlled but people do it anyways is really the true thing to fear. What a great movie. And Edward Norton is always a treat.

And, Frank Costello would be a great subject, as it’s easy to write him off as evil and profoundly amoral, given an early scene where he shoots and kills a man and a woman and then laughs because the woman “fell funny.” BUT, clearly Costello has some sense of morality given his interaction with the priests and his anger over the abuse of children by the clergy. Maybe that’s where it all started for Frank, abused by someone he was supposed to trust, a person held up as a pillar of the community. Perhaps he dealt with all the pain by becoming desensitized, not only to his own suffering but to the suffering of others.

I think someone like Syndrome from "The Incredibles" would be a good one to analyze. People tend to get a lot about his backstory wrong (namely they claim Mr. Incredible said that you can't be a hero without powers when he never did) but there's a lot to the character all the same. I second that, he's definitely one of the greatest monsters from manga/anime, that is a regular human. If we're discussing manga villains, Shira from *"Blade of the Immortal"* (one of my favorite mangas, second only to masterpieces like Berserk, Vagabond, Akira...) would be a good one... Plus he got some attention semi-recently, since the manga (that is sometimes called "The Inhabitant of Infiniti: IMMORTAL") got a relatively solid movie adaptation by the great Takashi Miike in 2017, and a new anime adaptation from 2019 to 2020. The first anime adaptation, that only covered about a 1/4 of the manga, was released in 2008, and even if it was kinda tame, it's still the most faithful so far. The latest anime looks good, but it rushes through the entire manga in only 24 episodes, which is an insane pace for a manga that is 30 volumes long, and they're not exactly short volumes... To take the Hannibal trilogy from this video as an example, it would be like if someone made a movie in which he tried to cram all 3 books of the OG trilogy (I don't like "Rising" all that much) *FIN*

I loved everything about this apart from the comment about Dolarhyde being a 'schizophrenic'. This is incredibly unlikely. At the age of 42, he remains a highly intelligent, highly organised individual. Active episodes of schizophrenia (known as psychosis) are toxic to the brain. Thus, every episode of psychosis leads to a brain injury and a subsequent loss of function. With repeated episodes of psychosis or prolonged periods of psychosis (during which an individual might experience auditory hallucinations) comes further loss of function. So, by the age of 42, if Dolarhyde were to have experienced auditory hallucinations for the past ~ 24 years (assuming onset at 18) then his brain would be heavily impaired and he would typically function like many of the individuals I have cared for in this state - these are not people you would describe as remotely organised and would be assessed as falling well below the average IQ. A delusional disorder may be more appropriate, and such individuals can typically function quite well in society with the exception of their particular delusion (which causes great dysfunction in that area of their life. It's true that Dolarhyde is blunted in his affect (restricted facial responses) but could be better explained by a need to mask his emotions to protect himself. There is an old question: are the action of the insane evil, or symptoms of their illness? A person who kills for money is a hit-man. A person who kills because of the voices is a serial killer. Both have killed as many people, which one is more evil? I say that the insane aren't operating under the same sort of rules as you and I. There are always people opposing the system of morals and traditions of their time/country, but that doesn’t change the fact that morals are an highly subjective construct wich is determined by the time/place and the majority of people. In history are countless examples of humans doing things we would consider as evil these days, but back then they are acceptable to the set of morals they lived by. Excellent work. The only detail I think you missed, and something that I always found interesting, was that the families Dolarhyde killed had the exact same structure as his mother's family excluding him; a mother, a father, two sons, and a daughter. I always interpreted that as him thinking that the people he needed to kill had to be, what was in his mind at least, a "perfect" family. To me at least, it felt like another manifestation of his trauma. Also, neither here nor there, but Tom Noonan has always been easily my favorite portrayal of the character. Even though I don't really think any of the adaptations of 'Red Dragon' have properly lived up to book, 'Manhunter' is easily my favorite because it has the best Will Graham, a very effective Francis Dolarhyde, and so much tension and atmosphere you can drown in it.

I always felt like, if Francis could have waited - held back the Dragon a little longer, until he met Reba - he may have been in the clear, and may have enjoyed a normal adult life, or as normal as anyone has. The first two villains in the movie "Manhunter" were never equaled or surpassed. They set the gold standard. In addition Michael Mann was the genius behind it all.

May I make a suggestion on a villian that exists and has a movie titled after him Bronson. Britains most violent prisoner. Edit: Another suggestion is the movie Naked (1993) with David Thewlis as Johnny. He's the most fascinating character although a couple other characters are too.

Red Dragon, and Dolarhyde, are Harris’ best in the Hannibal series. He really did peak immediately.

Love your analysis of all these villains, including ones that I'm not necessarily familiar with myself. Given that No Way Home home came out, I'd be curious to see a video of Dafoe's Green Goblin, since most people would consider him the best Spidey villain, and a possible contender for best MCU villain.

I wonder if this guy will do the TV series version of hannibal. He's a bit different from the movie and book counterpart

the red dragon is a great book...thomas harris is a brilliant writer and his stories arent as scary as they are viscerally disturbing..like the nick name the kids give dolarhyde in the orphanage...i read the book over a decade ago and yet the scene where his grandma comes to meet him for the first time in the orphanage is embedded in my brain...when she meets him for the first time his grand ma asks him if he knows his name and dolarhyde gets excited...he knew the answer...the older boys had told him...he looks her in the eyes and says "cunt face"

I would like to recommed reading the manga "Monster" and analysing it's main villain, Johan Liebert, and his relation with other characters in the story. There are many who analysed him before, but I would like to learn about your interpretation.

Ralph Fiennes is a fine actor, but wayyy too good looking for this role. Frankly, so was Richard Armitage. Tom Noonan was much more appropriate.

But when Francis was in the army, he got plastic surgery to correct his cleft palate and a nose job, so he did eventually look relatively "normal". But the psychological damage inflicted on him was too severe.

Amazing idea but that probably won’t happen unless Blood Meridian gets an adaptation, which is never going to happen, or if Vile Eye starts covering literary only villains.
