My Mister is my all-time favorite, followed by Mr. Sunshine, both of which I've written long articles about. In the My Mister essay I wrote of jeong, but also of han, which seemed to consume the Lee Sun-kyun character. I've seen My Mister three times, once on Viki and twice on Netflix. There were crucial moments when the subtitles on Viki were better than they were on Netflix, but also vice versa. Viki subtitles are a group effort, so it may be that one of the group found the perfect way to translate a particular line. Another series I loved and have written about was Beyond Evil. As for Liberation Notes, I was hugely disappointed. I found that the screenwriter Park Hae-young, was piling it on by having all the characters be relentlessly miserable. There was no subtlety, hardly any moments of relief, and in the end unbelievable. My Mister is a masterpiece. Liberation notes is quite forgettable, except for the extraordinary acting of Son Suk-ku. Still, given her brilliance with My Mister, I will always look forward to anything Park Hae-young writes.

@@elemental9578 I quite liked what I saw of My Liberation Notes. I didn't find it miserable but rather wonderfully encapsulating of the ennui of middle age and suburban life in Seoul. It felt very existential. It's great that, like Jeanie, your writing about these dramas and understanding some of the cultural concepts that lay beneath.

Decendants Of The Sun, Mr Sunshine, The Glory, some older movies like Old Boy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Love Korean dramas and movies.

When she talks about using K-Drama as a surrogate emotional release, I totally understood that. I got divorced in 2009, and I binged watched Grey's Anatomy through it. Being able to laugh and cry with that show helped me express my complex emotions. I always say Grey's got me through my divorce

I started watching My Mister after watching the first part of this video. Now my mom, step dad, and I watched 6 episodes on our day off and we are all very involved and love the show. Which is a miracle my step dad likes it cause he is extremely ridged about what he likes and doesn't like. I love it cause I find it relatable to the main male and his scenario. It is top 5 of drama's I've seen already. Thanks for making this podcast episode.

I enjoyed this. Your comments on Artists vs. Idols was interesting to me because it is a conversation I have with my wife about my creative desire to make a children's curriculum that resonates with Me (social circles) VS. Published Textbooks. My wife generally says that nobody has the luxury to do what I do because the purpose of the book is to "make money." I work hard to smile and sing to my own tune. We'll see. 새옹지마!

Hopefully you can get to the stage where you are able to teach and communicate what you want. One of the things that helps me most in terms of mental health and personal fullfillment is that I am able to teach whatever I want, whenever I want at university. This means that I'm constantly brining new ideas to young adults and seeing how they resonate. Making money is the last thing I consider. The podcast itself, for example, costs me money to produce.

On subject of 'customer service voice', IDK if Koreans get training on it, but as an American who teleworks in customer service, I never received training on my 'customer service voice'. It's more something that developed as a natural extension of both job and cultural expectation.

In the podcast we recorded today, Yunseo suggested that some foreigners have better Korean enunciation than locals when doing simple greetings because they put more effort into it lol

Cross cultural stuff is so hard for the human brain/genome. With increasing deglobalization > tribalization > scarcity.......suppose it will get even more problematic. Hope not. "Hope is not a strategy."

Curious - does having a psychopathic leader north of the border threatening daily nuclear annihilation, effect mental health?

It certainly affects gender - with all men forced to serve for close to two years while women do not. Han, often described as the result of separation and division, was certainly prominent in the mind and feelings of previous generations although students today, as Yunseo has said a few times on record, do not associate with it as such.

Fascinating richness - sadly alongside profound, constant stress/threat/trauma. Also, worthwhile to remember SK has has highest IQs of any society! Becoming a follower. It would help to have explanation/index of idioms, eg, Han, etc Personally, the the "heart of the heart of the country" - I find my Koren friends great fun and very sharp. Also more approachable than Chinese or Japanese...but all amazing cultures.@@DavidTizzard
