서늘한 여름밤 (Lee Seo-hyun) is a South Korean writer and psychological counseling planner.
She received her Master's Degree from the Department of Psychology at Korea University in 2015, and then became a counselor at a large hospital. She soon began drawing and recording her thoughts before then uploading them on the internet. This led to her also starting a popular podcast and authoring 3 different books. In 2017, she established the psychological counseling center ‘Every Mind’. Today, her Instagram and RU-vid content reaches countless thousands, providing solace, honesty, and the message for Korean people that, "It's okay".
We spoke with her about her recent appearance on Mark Manson's RU-vid video declaring Korean people to be the most depressed in the world. We then spoke about trauma, anxiety, perfectionism, the self, fear of failure, micro aggressions, and much more.

Once upon a time I had a sense that physical and cognitive work were in sync. My father got some wood, planned out how to build a shed, built it then used it every day after. The physical work and the cognitive work seemed sync’ed into something lasting. Now, there seems to be some large complex entity behind us taking all of our small pleasure throwing it into a sea of society that can’t be individually made sense of. The ego is still a great source of energy for the task that you’d like to think you can achieve. The ego also seems to be a good companion when dealing with nihilistic individuals. I’d like to think about how compassion compersion can work with tit for tat ( be kind, fight back, forgive) as some of the code for love.

Having just come from responding to a comment on the episode with Tanner about Irish Marxism, I can't help but see the concept of alienation in your description of the change between the shed we build ourselves and the large complex entities leaving us together but alone...

It’s most likely their highly competitive society, superficial obsession with beauty, materialism and huge wealth gap that is making Korean people depressed. Even though trauma from war can affect generations, it’s probably not the cause of unhappiness today. My grandfather was in the Korean War, my grandmother was a refugee of war traveling south with her children to escape the battles. After the war my grandfather built a modest home in the mountains of Buam Dong and it was the happiest season of my mother’s life. Her parents were loving parents. She always longed and had nostalgia for this period in her life.

Thank you for sharing your family's experiences. It's really hard in the present day to imagine just how hard life must have been back then. By the same token, 서밤 suggests that mental health issues are a modern 'luxury'. That the development of the nation has given people the time and 여유 to look inside and contemplate things. And what we find there is not always pleasant.

What would you ask 서밤 about mental health? How do you think Korea is coping with all these changes?

This problem of the Transgenerational effect - where trauma is carried across generations is little appreciated .✌️🕊️

Yes, and interestingly, its a well-known concept in the west whereas here in Korea, a place it is perhaps most appropriate because of all the recent turmoil and tragedy, few have ever heard of it...

If you’re triggered by terms like “trigger warning” and micro agression, you’re too fragile
