@@thegreenmanofnorwich Yes, it felt weird seeing a 'Sulaco' landing in Alien 3 when I saw it in the cinema. Funnily enough it was one of the major gripes amongst fans at the time as well.
@@ptonpc oh I never knew it was something people particularly disliked! I get it as a cost cutting measure, but it's a pity we didn't get to see anything new
I was in the Marine Corps in 79 when Alien was released. I loved the movie! Soon after seeing the movie I visited one of the San Diego Museums and was thrilled to see the nostromo used in the movie on display as I first walked in. It was about 5 feet long or so, as I recall. It was a thrill for me. Had to either be in late 79 or sometime before August 80.
Proudly ex South African Navy...served aboard Strike Craft as engine room rating imagination could run terrifyingly wild on night watches down there...also big aliens fan since I shat myself as an 11 year old when I first watched Alien ...been a big fan of the franchise for years now...
These videos are why I am certified obsessed with this channel! The work that went into making this is awesome! The movie clips and art images and subtle background music just suck you right into it. This channel is life
Alien Theory no problem. I wouldnt say it if i didnt mean it. I cant wait for the next movie to come out. Waiting to watch the space jockey get revenge on david
@@AlienTheory It's true, I've seen content here shown nowhere else- and I own ALIEN VAULT, ALIEN: THE ARCHIVE, ALIEN : The Weyland Yutani Report, ALIEN: The Movie in Pictures Magazine and recently THE MAKING OF ALIEN.
..a question that bugs me is why does the Nostromo have guns as if it were a combat vessel or a military ship? When it was supposedly a civilian commercial ship? And the setting's milieu ( at least in the original first movie or even from the 2nd one ), the movie's story setting seems to not have included warlike established alien civilisations like Star Trek or a galaxy in conflict like Star Wars, nor was there even a hint of the presence of such dangers as 'space pirates'.. It seemed to me that there's an atmosphere or an implied understanding from the first 2 movies that the 'space setting' of the Nostromo was similar to the seafaring setting of the late 70' and 80's of the 20th century when one Superpower had effective control of the world's seas. The xenomorph was apparently just the 'first contact' as of the 1st, 1979 movie and 2nd, 1986 movie @@AlienTheory
The Nostromo is totally iconic. Even though she is not as maneuverable as say the Enterprise or Millenium Falcon, any sci-fi fan knows this ship and it's legacy.
Yea...The "Where the fuck did I go wrong with my life that I didn't go back to college and get a degree in engineering like I initially planned?" thoughts hit me whenever I see cool stuff like this!😉👍🏻(...seriously, PLEASE do more videos like this...and you can tell I'm being sincere. How? C'mon. You can hear it in my voice, I'm not messin with ya or anything...look into my eyes, and listen: Please do more ship/technology thingies as it'd be totally killer. If I'm lying, may all I typed disappear right...now! Well, there ya have it.😉👍🏻....again, awesome vids, whenever I talk to someone I remotely think they're into stuff like this, I send 'em your way, and don't think twice about it.😊) One last thing: Sorry for the length of this comment, but I only ramble on the channels I truly enjoy, as they're the ones taking the time FOR. Now I'll shut up.👽👍🏻
The Sulaco has always been my favourite, its design is great and has obviously influenced a lot of ships in military sci-fi. I like to think that, after Alien 3, it continued its trip to Earth and docked at Gateway Station with nobody aboard, thus becoming sort of a mythical ship to the USCM.
When I got the Alien Isolation game, my Alien fanboy wet dreams were answered! Just to (virtually) walk through those iconic corridors! Especially on the Crew Expendable and Last Survivor DLC, which took place in the Nostromo. I've always loved the ungainly design of Nostromo, and those interiors are such an iconic feature. I only have to see a dunking bird toy to envision them. In SciFi, there are so many nods to the interior of Nostromo, in the 1984 series of V, it looks like they actually used ladders, doorways and walls from the Alien set, to create the bowels of the visitor mothership! I actually think they did
I loved those DLC missions on the Nostromo more than the whole game with it's 19 missions on Sevastopol station. They were perfect, with last survivor being my favourite as it perfectly captured one of the best parts of the film where you are forced to run for your life towards the lifeboat, knowing the ship will self destruct while not knowing where the alien is lurking and you don't have the time to be careful or quiet. On top of that you have the exhaust fumes, strobes and cacophony of sirens just giving you this perfect tense headache of fear and anxiety while feeling utterly lost in the bowels of the Nostromo! God damn how I wish they had made the game more like that as a whole. Overall that and Dead Space are my favorite games and I'm crying for a sequel for isolation.
I could not agree more! My sentiments exactly when I interacted with the 'Torrens' and felt I was sitting with the 'Nostromo's crew with Kane ready to be first time/last time parent...
Such an awesome experience, I remember the day I bought it from GAME (during a lunch break from work on day of release.....my god the rest of that day dragged!), and rushing home (fast, but safe as possible), and playing it.....oh my god, I was transfixed! Thank christ the following week was a holiday! I played it nearly every night. The atmosphere, hissing gas jets, lights, and knowing just somewhere in some dark area, that xeno was waiting...... The only thing that was a letdown.....no Jones! I'd have LOVED to have seen a DLC, called something like "Jonesy's Tail" which had you playing as the famous ginger cat, hiding and running, jumping up high, sneaking, finding cubby holes, but obviously no weapons, but you could do distractions like knocking things over, accidentally pushing buttons for alarms, that sort of thing to keep you one step ahead of androids and the alien. The fun you could have with sneaking etc would have been awesome, with a sort of "cat sense" game mechanic, tricky mini games, that would have been brilliant
When listening to your technical spec for the Nostromo, It reminded me of a Star Trek Enterprise Manual I once had many years ago! The tech manual had a verk dark red cover and was full of technical specs. Well done!
Another excellent addition to the channel. Your work deserves to be part of extra content on Blu Ray etc I have watched the documentaries, listened to the audio books, read the novels & comic's. But you're research is exhaustive, your channel is the only channel fans of the franchise need Keep up the excellent work!
A am partial to the Sulaco. It partially, in a strange way, influenced me when I joined the Marine Corps myself. I more modern version with today's effects would be awesome! A story on the Sulaco would be much appreciated.
Edown 101 For a second when I read your comment I thought you said you joined the Coloinal Marines as in the same ones from Aliens. I was going to say they don't exist in real life. Then I read it again and it just said Marine Corps. Silly me.
I think the Torrens is beautiful too. I'm fascinated with these star freighters for some reason. That includes the Anesidora which we never even see outside of concept art.
@@zantar429 We see/walk through some of the Torrens and the Anesidora in the game, Alien: Isolation. Granted it is just minute parts of such large vessels, but it was fun to do.
The USCSS "Nostromo" must be my favourite spaceship from the Alien franchise. After all it is the very first thing we see in the 1979 "Alien" movie! Thanks for another great video, sir.
I think because Alien had this sorta 'magic' too it. A concept that was unheard of at the time. The only other Sci-Fi alien/horror movie that I enjoy and sorta comes close is John Carpenter's The Thing. Whenever we see other sci-fi aliens acting like a hive, or bursting out of people, we always think of the original.
Thats a great idea! Cover films like Life, but also schlock like Inseminoid, Galaxy Of Terror, even the Italian knockoff Alien 2! It would be interesting to see the series influences too, comparing Alien to its filmic roots, with films like It! The Terror From Beyond Space, or Planet Of The Vampires
In science fiction i have four favorites. USS Enterprise, NSCSS Nostromo, Millenium falcon and original'78 Battlestar Galactica (in no order) All are incredible monunents to surperb production design and imagintion.
@@andrewandreas2625 LOVE the score for The Black Hole. And the Cygnus belongs here as well. I think if they would have went with a younger cast save for Forster at the lead, and I suppose Charlie (Bottoms) they could have captured more of the Star Wars magic that was all around at the time. Still, I enjoy this movie very much. Just watched it again yesterday in fact.
Nostromo is the environment of so many of my chilhood nightmares. Alien is my horror movie first love. Because it was the prime source of a majority of my nightmares growing up. Gotta respect that. Can't say any other horror movie ever had that kind of impact on me. No other vessel had the kind of ambiance that the Nostromo had. Remember this well Ridley Scott, the "Big Chap" is NOT over-done because nobody else could portray him like you did. You struck gold with the first foray into the series. It could be scary still, if only the formula you created were adhered to. Bring back the horror!
I always liked how the ships were given quite original names from Joseph Conrad's works. The Nostromo and the Sulaco are great ship names, same with the Marlow from the third Alien vs Predator game. Prometheus and Covenant on the other hand... just words taken out of every sci-fi ever made.
This is the video I've been waiting for: specifically the c- level or the garage level. In the movie, the landing struts suspended overhead when at rest, shows along the walls the counterbalances assembly allowing the viewer to at least speculate on the immense hydrolics power contained where controlling the huge struts are nessessary. And overall, it's a great video. And yeah, the Nostromo is my favourite ship.
My favourite spaceships in the Alien franchise are 1.The Nostromo 2. USCM Sulaco / drop ships 3. The Prometheus 4. The Covenant 5. The Betty Awesome Alien Theory episode as always !
When I was younger I worked at a few airports and had the privilege of driving a Airplane Pushback which was originally converted into the USCM's APC. That transport is a personal favorite! Choosing between the Sulaco and the Nostromo is a hard pic! The Nostromo is the scariest in my opinion :D
Thank you for making excellent videos. Your Alien videos help provide a therapeutic reality filter when I’m home that I’ve made into my aesthetic haven.
Just two days ago I was watching "Alien", and was still trying to figure out some of the ship layout and how exactly it associated with the refinery part of the ship. Alien Theory, as usual, does not disappoint!
can this man please record himself saying every word of the English language so even long after his time we can have voice overs like this?? Keep up the amazing work I love these!
The details of this piece are awesome! The background music really brings it together and there's no shortage of content. Would like to see more of these tech spec videos!
My favourite spaceships in the Alien franchise are 1. The Nostromo 2. The Sulaco / drop ships 3. The Betty 4. The Prometheus 5. The Space Jockey / Engineer ships 6. The Covenant Awesome Alien Theory episode as always !
Honestly, I would love to own and/or live these kinds of ships, especially the Nostromo and Sevestapol space station. Ships like these have always quite fascinated me because its size, characteristics, and the amount of material it takes to construct such a ship.
Hey thanks so much! The info is from 3 sources: 1. The Colonial Marines Technical Manual 2. The Weyland-Yutani Report and probably most importantly 3. A schematics sheet of the Nostromo that was included with a book called The Alien Vault. It also had nostromo patch replicas and posters and storyboards!! Really awesome coffee table book.
My favourite spacecraft is the Sulaco and the APC of it. I have a obsession, and the Alien movies are one of those who blown me away since 1979.Greetings from Germany (the weapons from Vasquez and Drake was a modified MG42)☺
I would love to live in this ship with a few others. Just having that isolation and huge space to play hide and seek would make life a bit more perfect! To be honest, I would love to own these ships and to have them for all my personal allies and friends. The Sulaco and the Panatra and the USM Auriga. Perfect ships to have.
You Sir, are a true sci-fi scholar! I love these videos! Alien is my favourite of all the films! I even have a Nostromo hat like Brett’s. God bless you!
Right at this moment I realized that the action in the movie was confined to the 4 levels of the small spaceship and not including the refinery installation that is towed by the Nostromo...
We subscribers appreciate all you do!! You should do audibles of the "Alien" story franchise...if you aren't already.☺ Honestly you could make the most boring tale utterly interesting. 😁 Thank you for your commitment to the franchise...You've almost single handedly reignited my interest once again.🤘🖤
Nostromo is a wonderful example of production design that combined a look and feel of lived in functionality. I prefer the Sulaco personally, but the Nostromo was almost a character in itself.
Brother, you have such a gifted voice for narration. I truly hope you look into marketing those golden vocal cords for narrating audiobooks and/or documentaries.
The Nostromo just has that Eerie dark feeling to it just looking down the halls in the pictures you feel like there's something behind you even in your living room it's a beautiful beautiful ship and I don't think it'll ever really lose its place amongst the top tier alien signature items so to speak
There is not a single bathroom on A Deck. No showers, locker rooms, or any place for privacy. No place to sleep, other then the hibernation pods. I suppose such amenities are on the lower decks.
This is such an amazing lore, i can´t believe how much i love Alien and i always will no matter what. The way you do these videos and how you narrate things is done to perfection, screw LuisDewitt, your channel is on another level. Cheers!!!
Thank you for your kind words! I love Alien so much too and it's in my head every day and doing this channel has been one of the greatest experiences of my life!
Great job. One mistake: When you discuss the cooling system at 3:28 you show the stored Landing Gear area. That huge black vertical structure is the Forward Gear folded up in the storage position.
Sulaco has been my favorite, but I believe it’s class of ship is why I love it. It military function and use is what gives it the aesthetic pleasing look. I would love to see a xeno use this ship as a nest in feature film
Yeah the Nostromo is the best looking ship of the bunch. The designs are just so right. Everything looks like its part of a huge operating ship. The dark reddish corridors of c deck. The landing claw bays, the golden garage, the lab. No other ship in the series showed this kind of attention to detail and immersion.
Oh I'm a definite a fan of that "Flying Gun" type of ship like Sulaco was!My favourite kind of ship! The idea of a weapon so massive that you have to crew it in order to use it at all!Built for pure out whoop-ass without the intention of taking names!
The Nostromo is my favorite. It is designed so well that it's entirely believable and it's hallways deliver truly claustrophobic and terrifying experience while retaining full believability as a real starfreighter with usable design features that make sense. Just you reading it's specs made me think that's why modern films fail to capture me, as they are so much more shallow by design. The Nostromo and it's crew was designed to convince the viewer they are real and on a real space haul mission. Without that believability, we don't assume our position among the crew as an invisible viewer who lives through their fearful experience with them, on the Halls of this ship. This is what Ridley Scott himself has completely forgotten when directing the prequel movies of late. Instead of creating a believable crew and vessel, he has unleashed designers who have been tasked to create futuristic and hollow shiny designs that do not convince the viewer the same way the Nostromo did. We do not spend the time on the new high tech futuristic ships hallways to get to know the character and function of them, and thus we don't care what happens to it's crew or the ship itself. Modern films spoon-feed us with flashy explosions and effects without believable substance that would ground us with the experience. When the crew enters the alien ship in Alien, it sends chills down the spine. It looks high tech and ancient, organic at the same time. Truly alien in it's function and design and we feel the mystery. In contrast when the crew enters in Prometheus, we feel absolutely nothing. No fear, anxiety, wonder or awe. It's due to the way the film is content just showing us things in their story context, without character or development that runs deep. A lot of things are just plain luck in Alien. They got Giger do the designs for everything alien, and pretty much the hero's of the time to do the other design's etc. Incredible cast without too much celebrity status apart from Skerrit and Kotto. With just one of those things out of whack, would have severely crippled the original alien experience.
Another good video, with a strong leaning towards the technical side of the Alien universe rather than the creature or the characters. Makes me wonder if you'll do follow-up videos on the Sulaco, the Prometheus, the Covenant, and even the Auriga. Always looking forward to your next release.
the nostromo, by far is my favourite.. because in the late 70's when this came out ,it was unlike any other movie I've seen.(sci-fi) even if you watch the movie today, it does not feel too out dated to me.of the first 4 movies it is my favourite
The Sulaco. It was armed, had a compliment of multi role drop ships (Bug Stomper and Smartass) and, as a sailor I have an affection for naval vessels. The Sulaco was basically an LHD in space.
According to a copy I used to have of “Alien, the illustrated story” translated into Swedish, it’s mentioned that Nostromo carries 200 million tons of cargo (and not 20 million).
The Company knew of the alien signal before the Nostromo launched, because the company placed Ash aboard the nostromo. The company probably also sent out the Nostromo with only one shuttle rather than two shuttles, to make sure that the crew would not abandon ship at the first sign of trouble.
I'm rather partial to the Cheyenne. As for BIG SHIPS only? Nostromo is my favorite, but, the Sulaco is far more universally recognizable, I might add. That's just me. Love your content, buddy. This is my all time favorite franchise (Aliens all time favorite film. By a country mile), and u more than do justice to it. I am truly grateful for all of your efforts. Well done. As always. Have a great weekend, errbody. 👍😁🤙💯✌
The Cheynne is cool. It's also the name of a prototype attack helicopter, the AH-56, and shares a similar tandem cockpit layout. Although I'd say that layout takes more inspiration from the AH-1 Cobra.
Would like to see an anatomy of the refining station that Nostromo was towing. Sevestapol gave some good examples in the Isolation game but a full break down would be awesome!
The scene from the film that is shown in the video @6:30 - where is that suppose to be? It looks too large and tall of a room (appears 6-8 stories tall and rather cavernous) to be contained within the Nostromo. I assume its the fusion reactor room, but again, looks larger than something the ship could contain. Looks more like something that might inside one of the towers of the refinery, but I am pretty sure there is not connection between the tug and the refiner that would permit a person to walk into the refinery or to a part of the Nostromo that could look inside it like that. Any ideas/clarity you can provide?
I love the Nostromo, there's something about the way the upper decks contrast with the lower decks. The warm bright lights and cleanliness of the upper decks compared to the florescent lights and the grimy overworked lower decks. Its the perfect balance for me, the other movies just went full industrial and lost that "organic??" feeling, like everyone was always uncomfortable and sleeping on sheets of metal instead of having an actual bed.
A nice video. I watched this movie as a kid and always thought the Nostromo was the whole ship, rather than the towing vehicle. I'm actually more interested in the much larger refinery, than the crew ship. I'm trying to find out what the dimensions of the refinery are. I watched those really well done videos that show ship sizes in comparison to New York. One of them did have the towing vehicle, but not the Refinery. I made a very rough estimation that the refinery was probably about 5kms across and about 2kms tall. It could be a bit less than that, but the diameter of the largest Oil refinery on Earth is about 6 kms for a comparison. Thanks again for a great video.
