Additional tip: If the SD card that you got with your device is a Kioxia card, it's okay to keep it, as it is a Toshiba brand. Still, you have to watch out for the no-brand SD cards; those are the ones that are prone to failure.
Similar to some of the other commenters, my RG353PS setup also got stuck at the ArkOS logo at 6:09, however, I managed to fix this by clicking the Reset button on top of the device, then after resetting, the setup proceeded normally (WARNING: Be careful when you plan on doing this as the guide mentioned to not touch anything during this step! But for my case, I was willing to try anything and it did work out for me, so maybe it's worth a shot 😅) Loving ArkOS more than the stock one so far!! My favorite improvement so far are the improved Ports, I'm finally able to run and utilize PortMaster and play some PC games such as Undertale. I wasn't able to do this in stock before. Gonna try Stardew Valley soon. Thank you for this guide!

Thanks for the guide. In the end your reviews on G353PS tempted me and I think I'm gonna order it. After having MM+ for a few weeks I decided to get rid of it. It's a nice little console, but for me there's certain amount of compromises incompatible with it's current price (mediocre speakers, closed source MainUI OS that limits Onion OS development, weak PCB based Wifi antenna, weird charging indicator and, most of all, "by-design" PWM noise). If I already spent ~65$ on MM+, I could add ~15$ more and get RG353PS with better grip, better screen, wifi, OS and ability to play some PSP games.
This is a game changer for me and this unit. Sitting down now to go thru this and will begin to perform this awesome update. Will keep you posted and would love to send a "Thanks" to pay you for your efforts. For someone like me who is NO WAY as techie as you...I/we greatly appreciate your due-diligence!! Awesome finally after over two and a half years of watching numerous people with platforms making videos claiming they are helping us especially those like me that know nothing. This man actually helps us understand how to get our handheld to give us what we desire. All the others say nothing and speak to us if we actually know something already which why would we be watching them? I need to be spoken to as of I am 5 years old and have brain damage not a computer wizard. I bought my first handed finally after this guy had enough balls to say for the price that the 353 is the best. I have no idea how long it will take to arrive. Hopefully I will understand how to back up the rom card and also do this arkos thing and get good RPGs to play
I got the RG353P model and I am sure this will work on that, but I decided to stick with the official firmware as it does a pretty good job as it is. I have ArkOS installed on my RG351MP and have used the update feature many times in the past, but when I tried to update yesterday by selecting the update option, it just went to a black screen for a couple seconds then back out to the main screen so I guess I'll never be able to update ArkOS anymore. Oh well.
Hi my original sd card that came with the device became corrupt and I prefer that same program again since with this one the f button doesnt work anymore. Could you tell me the name of that program so i can search for it? i have a rg353p
I bought a brand new RG353PS, however, once I received it, the unit itself is not turning on and i'm not able to charge it as well. I tried some of the steps here in utube using the reset and power button but no luck. Are you able to help me sir? Just incase you also encountered the same issue. Thanks for the video, super helpfull! Your videos made me choose the RG353PS model as my first device, and I'm not regretting it! Question though. With the native Operating System, the small 'F-button' opens a quick menu with handy features. After getting ArkOS on the device, the button becomes useless. Is there a way to map the 'RetroArch-settings' or any other input/quick-menu to the F-button?

You have ArkOS running on the PS model? I couldnt get mine to run ArkOS it gets stuck at the logo screen. I was told from a group on discord that ArkOS will not run on the PS model at all

I just posted a this video of yours and asked how it is possible then 😂 I did however run into that problem that others have of being stuck on the ArkOS logo screen. It’s a bummer. I used a 16gb sandisk ultra for the OS and 256 sandisk extreme for games :-) those are the one i had lying around spare (16gb comes with every raspberry kit and 256 from upgrade of phone to intenal storage one) so i think 16gb (or is it that even 8gb) is enough for os and 256 is good for adding more and more roms later? Thanks for a great guide, it really made this ambernic perform better than it does out of the box, night and day difference the way it feels.
A known issue with stock roms that come with the device is saves getting deleted, or not working, most of the times found through people playing Pokemon. Has nothing to do with stock firmware.
Good stuff...can't wait to optimise my GBA and PS1 library and add some PortMaster games. Crash Team Racing keeps freezing on the "loading" though. Would you say DreamCast and N64 are worth it on this device?
Depends. If you want perfect compatibility without compromise, then no, but if you want to play "some" games then yes. Personally, I'm not a fan of it for those systems
Just tried this, mine absolutely refuses to boot with ArkOS. I tried three different SD cards and then even flashed the original Kloxia that came with it. It'll launch into Android but it won't install Ark or boot into Linux. The cards are Sandisk extreme or PNY. Not sure what I did wrong. EDIT: Mine is the P model, rather than the PS.

Something I noticed. Some of these RG353PS consoles are spec'd different than others, which causes problems when trying to load ArkOS. I discovered this when I bought 2x of these (one for me one for my disabled brother). One (purple colored) had 1gb or more RAM and the CPU + MOBO were a different version than the other (white colored). I tried all sorts of ways to get ArkOS running, including swapping in a SD that was confirmed to work on the higher spec'd 353PS. I eventually replaced the white version with another white version and encountered the same issue, which I eventually returned the white version completely and bought a different console. Maybe the colors have something to do with different spec'd devices?

Hey, tried looking again, still nothing. If you don't email them, I don't know of another way. Everyone uses CFW like ArkOS, barely anyone uses stock firmware.

Hi, do you open the cheat menu from within a game. The program that came with my anbernic had a retroarch setup where you had to press the f button . But now i can press whatever i want and no menu anymore to open the cheats.
Tried this using both ApplePi and BalenaEtcher and both times it gets stuck on the ArkOS logo screen during the initial boot sequence and goes nowhere after that. Any ideas? JelOS works fine but I can't get ArkOS working at all (>_

I have several handhelds and I've done these setups on more devices then I have fingers - ArkOS 2.0 does not work reliably on the RG353PS. If you press the reset button enough times you can eventually get it to boot but if you shut down it's a right pain in the arse to get it back up. Furthermore, adding a second SD card in the TF2 slot also causes problems. This is not a functioning OS for this device.... makes sense since it's not officially supported. Perhaps there are model revisions... and no, I'm not talking about the RG353PS and RG353P. I would not recommend anyone do this. Also, generally, it's really bad policy to urge your viewers to THROW OUT their stock firmware. Yes, the cards are usually garbage but, in the event that something happens having the original card to fall back on is a good thing. Not only that, but (at the time of writing) you can't get the stock OS on line so the only way to get another copy is by cloning your existing card..... had I not done so before I started down this risky path of loading an OS on an unsupported device I would've been up shartcreek. Don't urge you viewers to make terrible choices.
Firmware is right here my friend - win.anbernic.com/download/list_51_2/ It's not terrible choices, you just missed a Google. I'm also not sure what you're doing wrong that ArkOS isn't working reliably, seems like you're having some singular issues as you're in the minority with it.
There's an issue with the clock speed as it seems that on 1.8Ghz the system freeze... the ArkOS developer has released a boot DTB update that downclock the speed to 1.4 and the system is STABLE as I tried myself. I had the same issues you are talking with random system/boot freeze and now is superstable. Obviously you have to challenge with games speeddown but I see that is a bit slow with psp, all other systems seem to not be so affected (like ports such as HL, TMNT, SHOVELK, SONIC MANIA and so....) and arkos is for me the best choice for all the system it can play.
After formatting the 2nd SD card, my PC can no longer open it to copy files. I suspect this is probably a me issue, but surely I can't copy the files over first because the formatting wipes them, no?
Likewise... Tried flashing the latest ArkOS M build through both ApplePi and BalenaEtcher... Both just stay on the ArkOS logo forever during what should be the initial boot sequence. No idea why it's not working after multiple tries. Can anyone help?
i did everything but one thing couldnt find the bios folder on the sd card after going through the whole thing the qustion is can i just creat a folder and name it bios ?
Mine takes a few seconds and not long enough to be bothered. The start needs a long power button press. Ok think maybe 5 seconds and I just see 3 dots loading before the main screen comes on. If you ask about the installation boot... Maybe it took like 7 minutes
I need help. My Anbernic will not charge or turn on now. I was following the steps. After the first boot, I shut it off just like in your vid. Then after I put the ROMS over the micro SD, I put it back into the Anbernic and it will not turn on. I thought it might be dead, so I put it on the charger and no charging lite. Hhheeeeelllllppppppp
hey Joey, at 1:40 you mention that you "can't save games" like on POkemon for example. So with the original stock card, you can't save games at all? is that what you mean? and when you replace the original and install arkos, it resolved the issue and then you can save? How do you open the SD card at the anbernic? Because I start the console and the console have some games on it, but I contact anbernic and they they told me that there's more games in the SD card that they send it to me. But I don't know how to open it. Can you help me please
That would be awesome wouldn't it. How great it would be to be able to get a handheld and a card that doesn't crash with all the games from someone. I unfortunately know nothing about this stuff emulators roms. Can't figure out what sites are good safe and so on. It's frustrating. I wish I knew how to do everything these people know. My site would be awesome and I would help everyone get what they need. Everyone is so skittish it's annoying.
