Note: current recent release is Onion V4.2.0. Also, if you have a newer firmware than mentioned in the video, you don't need to downgrade. Safe to go ahead. HTTP and FTP have moved to Tweaks, Network. Lastly, you may need to format your SD card as FAT32 before doing the firmware upgrade.
same as MrSazimi here, right after the instalation is finished, it gets stucks on the boot miyoo mini screen and nothing happens :( my firmware version was of July but I even tried to downgrade it to the March firmware (the exact version of the video) but it didn't worked.
I'm an old man setting up his very first retro handheld. This video made a scary process into one that's very easy and the result is the machine of my dreams. Thank you very much for this. I really appreciate it.
Thank you so much for the guide! My dad is an old school gamer and I got this for him as an advanced Christmas gift. He was so excited when he found out that he had me set it up today. This is the most excited I've seen him in a while and I felt great seeing him smile. Needless to say Christmas came early for both of us this year.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds hi, I happened to see this comment and I have a quick question for you. I followed the instructions and unzipped all required folders into the same folder. When I unzipped the tiny best set go games zip folder, it asked if I wanted to replace or skip a bunch of files. There were 1800 or 1900. I skipped them but not sure if I should have. I did the 128 GB set so it said to download the folder I just mentioned plus the 64 and 128 expansions.
Likely didn't hurt. In all honesty, I don't personally use the tiny best set, as I have my own curated roms, but shouldn't be any reason why you'd need to overwrite them, so you should be fine.
I just wanted to come back and say thank you so much for this video. I was extremely nervous about doing this since I have almost 0 computer skills and have been putting it off for a few days. I started this morning and took me less than an hour. Thanks for all the hard work you do. Now I have the handheld of my dreams!
Thanks for this - something that might be worth pointing out (especially if you're using 128+ gb micro sd cards) is that you have to format the SD card FIRST before upgrading the firmware to ver. 202303262339 otherwise your Miyoo Mini will not read from the SD card when you plug it in to the charger.
Can you explain this further? I need to format the sd card before upgrading the firmware, even if I haven't inserted the sd card into the Miyoo? I just cracked open the brand new Miyoo plus, and I have to wait until tomorrow for the SD card, so I'm wondering what I can do today before it arrives. I was going to upgrade the firmware, but your post made me hesitate. All of this is new to me.
@@BloodShotChrome For what it's worth, for anyone else following, you just need to format the SD card correctly before loading anything on to it. You can have ROMs/BIOS/Onion/other stuff on the SD card during a firmware update and it still updates fine and retains your data. So in my case I had the SD card a week before the Mini+, I preloaded everything on to the SD card, and a week later used the SD card updating the firmware/installing Onion and now playing games. No need for an empty SD card to update firmware.
Another small update with the more recent versions of Onion, you wont see the FTP and Web necessarily in the apps anymore, however, once its enabled Via Tweaks > Network, you can then navigate to the IP assigned to your unit (check Network again for the IP) and you'll still be able to access the browser the same way. It confused me a bit at first until I realized I toggled the option on and to just try the IP assigned. The more you know :)
@@Cheese_crackers it's definitely not EASY easy, unless you're already familiar with software/hardware terms and behaviors (my case). Totally ok to struggle and have to repeat few of the steps if needed =)
thank you for this solid guide. i personally use a retroid pocket but i got a miyoo mini + for my gf's xmas gift and i really wanted it to be ready to go for her. This guide was perfect.
Thank you for your help, I found all the other videos I’d watched on this to be a bit of a nightmare and being new with emulation/roms/bios you made it very simple and straight forward for me to follow.
Mine came last week with a Lexar branded card. I think maybe they were hearing about failures on the generic cards and opted for higher quality ones for the more recently produced Miyoos.
This is the best guide for sure. For example, Russ from retrogamecore suggests using different software for formatting SD card, but that one doesn't even work on a clean Samsung 128 Gb SD card, lol! Also this guide specifies a way easier ROM/Bios approach.
Thanks for your useful guide. I followed it with very few problems (all of which were ahem... user error). I did download the box art packs from Tiny Best Set - much less painful than scraping and seem to be very accurate. I also agree that the included card reader is rubbish, it simply didn't work very well and has been consigned to the bin - what a waste of resources! The rom downloads did indeed take some time, but they say patience is a virtue!
Bought one tomorrow, so I am happy to get a miyoo, but awesome this guide, then I can already start searching for games I wanna play on it, and add them tomorrow 😁
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds way ahead of it’s time, the mini fishing game to this day haven’t seen a better one and while everyone was lusting over playing FFVII I was a BOF purist
Just got mine today, extremely helpful! Wanna put in some notes though. FAT32 works the same as LARGE FAT32. If you plug in the SD card and charger (after adding the firmware file to your card) and you don't see a rocket, just the charging screen, you're good to skip the update part as you can already just put all the Onion stuff on your formatted card (or this worked for me, got mine on 7/27/23)
this video was helpful in allowing me to install onion os to my miyoo mini plus, but I did have to watch it multiple times and redownload files multiples times to actually get it working because I have no previous knowledge of how to do any of this. The only problem I seem to have is that there are no games in my console. Everything seems fine with the device, but it has no games.
I managed to get Onion installed by watching this video so thanks for that, as for the Tiny Best Set of games, I clicked download on the 5gb file and it said it would take 5 hours so I didn't bother, it would take days for the 40+gb file to go on top, even slower than Vimms Lair.
Great, great video. Got one of these to give to my Mom for her plane trips while she travels because she loved playing Gameboy haha. Everything works except for wifi, for the life of me I can't get it to connect to my router.
@@JoeysRetroHandheldsI did that and it’s still not showing up in my package manager or apps, super weird. Thanks for the reply and guide though, got everything else working
Almost done setting mine up thanks to your video. But is anyone else having EXTREMELY slow download times of the tiny best set games zip from the website? It's only 5GB and is saying the download is going to take 1-2 hours. I have fiber internet and can download a 5GB game on steam in like 30 seconds.. lol
BEEN FIGHTING AGAINST IT ALL NIGHT, turns out it wouldnt install cause I named the sd MIYOO, and there was some kind of conflict with the folder in the onion package 🙃
As a Cybersecurity professional i'm neverous about plugging the OG sd card into my PC to even update the firmware. Is it possible to boot into Onion OS on my own SD card without ever touching the included one?
Hi! Super helpful video, it was easy to follow as well! But I wanted to know why I can't find any PS1 games in my console, don't know if this is because I bought a 32gb SD card?? And do you know any other place that we can get more games and more consoles like N64?? Thanks!!
Thank you for the tutorial but you may want to edit the order a bit. You need to format the SD card THAN do the steps for updating the Version otherwise it may show “unmounted” SD card
I'm extremely new to all of this and will be going through this process tomorrow. Is 7- zip necessary, and should I download it? Ty in advance for the video. It will hopefully save me a huge headache .
Hello Joe, I have a question, when you said copy all the BIOS files into the files on your SD card. I noticed that my bios folder in my SD card has some folders inside. Also in the tiny best set go it has as well some folders inside Bios. I should copy all the things that are inside the bios of the set to my BIOS folder of my SD card or should I delete the folders and let only the bios?
When i installed onion os, i had to go and turn on recents and change the power button press to standby so it can shut down with long press like the stock os did.
The tiny best set BIOS and Roms folders already come with both normal and zipped folders containing files. In the video, you say there should only be the files so should I remove the folders and take out the files in it or should I just leave it as is?
Thanks for the in-dept setup guide, highly appreciated. I have a specific question regarding the achievements settings - how can I log off or switch off achievements? Each time I play using without wifi on (to stop draining my battery), I get an annoying retroachievements text... How can I make it stop. I tried switching off the achievements - but it does not seem to work. Thanks in advance!
Thank you so much for the guide! As some people have said, the set up may seem scary but thanks to this tutorial it is perfectly possible and even easy for people like me with no idea of tech stuff. I have one question! Is it possible to install Nintendo 64 console and games in the Miyoo Mini Plus?
You're a great help, thanks. I set this up a month ago for my brother, and now my games have no sound. The device still makes sound in the home page, settings etc, but goes mute when I start a game. Do you know if there is a fix for this? Should I update or reinstall something? Also, the mame games have some sort of copyright menu that keeps popping up everytime I press the A button. I don't know what my brother did, I'm so confused by all of this. Any help would be appreciated.
Hey joey I followed tour steps but once onion begins downloading to the MM+ it will hit 11% and then the miyoo logo shows and im back at the stock menu with no onion love. Please help
Just got mine today with the 32 GB. The video recommended of getting a 128 GB Micro SD card. Would that cause any problems because it's a 128 GB not a 32 GB Micro SD card?
New here. Just a quick question, so I have this option stock os or onion os to purchase. Does the os version come with the SD card ? Or it's like built in to the device? Because I'm planning to buy stock os since it's more affordable and getting separate SD card with onion os installed. Tia
so you just drag abd drop roms in the rom folder??not the actual system folder example if i want dead or alive ps1 i put it in rom folder not the ps1 folder??? thank you
Please read this im having a difficult time right now. Before watching this i deleted all the base files from my miyoo mini plus before downloading onion os because my computer didnt have enough space. I cant figure out how to find somewhere that has those base files. Are you able to help me find some way to basicaily get all the files you would from normaly having the miyoo?
I did everything I transferred everything but the only bios files that got corrupted on the standard card where the mame 2003 plus bios files now i dont have them cant play those aracde games does anyone know how I could get those files i cant find them online
