That’s the most educational anchor haul ever. You showed realistic how it go’s. Lesson one derived , take your time and stick to the plan. I use anchor alarm as my plotters does know the chain length deployed. Obviously it’s a tool like doorknob to open a door. Not a primary device to trust. Sound of the alarm doesn’t wake me 😂 so I need my wife or daughter to call that there is something beeping.😊 My waking device is a wave or movement that is not normal.

The more I watch you guys, the more I've learned, it isn't as easy as it looks or sounds. Planning, Team work, no distraction and nothing breaking, makes for a good anchorage. thanks for showing and describing steps and why.

It's a funny old thing. On the one hand, sailing isn't rocket science (the sailing bit is the easy part). On the other hand there's an awful lot of stuff you need to know. Practical experience is the best preparation! Liz 🙏

That was interesting. Thank you. Recently read your article from a few years ago on age and cruising. I am 57 (and English) and fully intend to get a yacht as soon as I am free… I look after my aging mother as she has no one else. I also watched your ‘Cruising tips’… fascinating and some great advice. I am probably not unusual in that I am an experience sailor from 5 years old… but it’s all dingy and beach cat based. I have crewed on bigger boats but never been the boss. So I aim to do an RYA course. Some very interesting advice… I think some of it I have already realized for myself… like I started looking at boats at the full end of my budget… but have readjusted to 33% of my budget being for the boat… and the rest kept for fitting and cruising. I will be cruising with a friend not a partner as after 31 years my wife left me and one of her trying to help me comments was: ‘and now you can get a boat like you want to’. Love how you have stayed in a region for so long. When my friends ask: ‘are you planning to sail round the World?’ My reply is along lines of: ‘getting the boat and getting to Caribbean and then South Pacific is my round the World… if I eventually circumnavigate then so be it.’

I made a dyneama soft shackle to attach to our snubber bridal for our mono. That way I can bring it all the way back to the windlass so there’s less chance of my falling over. Every now and again it pinches in the chain (got a system to sort that) but it usually works a treat and strong as. Great to see you back in the water and happy with the job.

Really interesting your procedure and how sure you need to be so as not to drift overnight. A bit more technical than parking a narrowboat 😀
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 7 дней назад
Yes, it's quite a different world! I'm hoping that if/when we end up on a narrowboat we won't find anchoring such a daunting prospect. But, for me, it's being close to the UK's glorious natural world, and being able to continually cruise that really appeals. Cheers, guys! Liz x

Put out another 5. 😂 I watch many sailors who back down on their anchor prior to attaching the snubber. Like you said it puts a lot of unnecessary strain on the windlass. Maybe some of those channels will check this video out. Thanks for sharing. ⚓️
@followtheboat
@followtheboat Месяц назад
We're pretty precious about the windlass, and agree that backing down without a snubber means more stress than necessary. Cheers. Liz

May I suggest... attaching your chain hook on a bite in the middle of your snubber line, then taking each end to separate (port and startboard) cleats! It shares the load, reduces hunting, and adds redundancy! :)

We've tried various methods and are pretty happy with the way we do it now. Thanks for the suggestion. 🙏 Liz

Nice remark, I noticed one guy to use hoist slings as snubber loop. It’s everyone their way. Obviously a v shaped version is more work. My way is to use the snubber to pull anchor on deck. If the anchor is set then apply the snubber overboard

I'm almost at the start of the anchoring learning curve. Only done it once on my boat, in light winds. No winch, single handed but I do use leather gloves (paranoid about fishing hooks). Thanks for the Anchor Lite tip.
@followtheboat

Two key things: setting it properly, and being able to get it up in an emergency, especially in foul weather.

So for monitoring ashore, we have what we call our "boat phone." It's an extra cell phone that has Anchor Pro on it. We can get alerts and check position by text message or email (not sure which....the Admiral is in charge of this part of the program lols). We're relatively new and it does provide a measure of confidence as you mentioned. Cheers.

You guys are such a good inspiration and have such nice "TV personalities". I have watched another couple (by coincidence also sailing an Oyster and also British) named "Sailing Florence". Not sure if all Brits are so nice as you guys but I like to think so. Do you guys know them or have you met them? They spent a few years near where you are during the lowdown. Not sure if you guys connected or not but they remind me of a younger version of yourselves, or at least what I imagine you were like..

I like that knot you showed us all a few episodes ago for the snubber. The knot has not failed me yet. Whereas the chain hook (not sure what type) has. The chain hook only came off occasionally when the anchorage was calm. Then I saw you using the knot on the snubber and l haven’t looked back. So thanks Cheers Glyn
@followtheboat
@followtheboat Месяц назад
Yes, I loved the knot, but Jamie wasn't so keen because in an emergency (we've had them) it takes longer to release. He's got a point... Liz 🙏
@followtheboat
@followtheboat Месяц назад
Just to add: the knot was an icicle hitch, more effective than a rolling hitch. And we've had snubber hooks come off the chain in bad weather, but there's hooks and then there's hooks. The Mantus is the best one we've used.

My neighbour went drifting through the anchorage yesterday. And he was on a mooring :) Luckily the locals rescued his boat and I don't think there was any damage. But anchoring here is difficult. There isn't a great deal of room and with wind and tide the boats can be pointing in any direction.
@followtheboat
