Yes, this drama is quite underrated and the main male leads are both very good looking. I was quite irritated with Zhan shi qi characters though at the beginning. Because most of typical Cdrama always portrayed a strong female fighter that strong in early episode but became really weak and clingy but in the, it exceeds my expectations because Zhan shi qi character aren't like that. She maintained her reputation as the best assassins till the end. Anyways even from episode 1, I already guessed that the main lead that was investigated the mystery actually the key of the mysterious itself and the ending for it quite good although I do wish for more excited adventure and journey but I guessed the writers wanted to keep it that way. The drama concept is almost the same with Detective Samoyed who in the end, the main key of the all mysterious that he himself been investigating but in the end it just remain hanging. The bromance in this drama are good too. Between the weak and fragile detective Jian bu zhi and his strong muscler sworn brother Zhao Wo huan. It's funny how Zhao Wo huan always getting jealous whenever Zhan shi qi get close to Jian bu zhi. He will always making sure that he the one who protect Jian bu zhi. They are like in triangle love. As much as I admit that the story are quite weak but I can still considered it as a good one. First found this drama from RU-vid about their funny clingy bromance 😂
BuZhi sounds like “don’t know”? Does that make Jian BuZhi a John Doe? I get the assassin names but wish I knew the puns of other character names. Sima Dang…something about dead horse? They mentioned it.
I started this drama wanting to waste time, I honestly thought i'm gonna drop it right away but surprisingly I kept watching! The visuals were so pleasing to the eyes, and i'm the type whose usually more interested in characters than the story so those guys really grew on me with each episode. Glad you reviewed this drama hope more ppl would watch it tbh 💙
This is by far, the best drama out this year. I'm so sad that it's basically disregarded and pushed to the side in China. I agree with you about the lightning, the frame, the characters. Everything was just so well done that I am amazed that it was a low budget drama. I loved everything about it and I really wish more people would watch it. I really want season 2 but I know that it might not happen because no one is talking about it. It's truly sad that something this great is shadowed by all those new dramas with young idols. Another great thing about this drama that you did not mention is how there is no annoying character. I hate it when the 2nd female lead falls in love with the male lead and just becomes super evil. There was none of that in this drama. Everything was straight to the point. Every characters were 3 dimensional and loveable. Praying that someone famous would advertise this drama so that it could become a hit like it deserved to be.
i'm currently watching episode 12, and just now came across this review. watching this makes me appreciate the drama even more and makes me want to rewatch all the previous episodes just to appreciate all the cinematography and small details like what you had mentioned. this drama truly is a hidden gem and i'm super glad many people agree.
I think its a very original story....No copying nonsense. I like the lightingting too. Am impressed by the plot but not really with the costume. However, its not a period drama so I can ignore that. The 2nd male lead actually made it interesting for me in the first 10 episodes. It started out at a rather quick pace but later dragged a little. I LOVE THE WATER COLOR black and white effects at the beginning and THE BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC which just sets it apart from other dramas. By the way, its not a BL drama right. Am tired of every drama trying to be portrayed as BL 🙄
Season2 pleaseeee....cant wait..like seriously after THE UNTAMED this would be my next favorite...how jian and zhao interact each other...remind of lan zhan and wei ying of untamed...please season 2....
Ahhh I’m so glad you made a review of this drama. I started this drama without knowing anything...I’m a sucker for detective dramas and I was pleasantly surprised. You are totally right about the cinematography and lighting in this drama. I love the look and ambiance of this drama. I love the characters and I agree it takes a couple of episodes to find out about them. I’m 10 episodes in and love them all now. I’m curious to see how it ends...a total hidden gem in my opinion. I want to check out some of the actors other works as well
I really loved this drama , I loved the cast especially the main actor & his friend they were so cute, I don't think it was draggy at all, it was well written I mean much better than my roomate is detective & many dramas last month, it was the best & despite the low budget their clothes & set were very elegant & expensive looking
I'm up to ep.15 on this drama & I was very pleasantly surprised at how pretty everything is: the colours, the costume, cinematography etc. It was nice to watch something that is not blinding you with their colours & lighting 😂😂😂. The actors and actresses grew on me. I started watching w/o the actors & actresses irritating me with their face or voices. They didn't bore me or drive me up the wall. I always have problems watching c-dramas because I find actors+actresses are not aesthetically to my taste. I love the actress playing Zhan Shi Qi. I like that she doesn't look like most of the c-drama actresses. ITA with all the points you made. I'm no film expert but my 1st thought was Zhang Yimou when I saw Zhan Shi Qi's beautiful red dress popping up against the backdrop of those beautiful tones of greens of the bamboo forest, the beautifully filmed fight scenes. So pretty, the colours, the actress. There were lots of similar kind of those scenes that remind me of ZYM's Hero etc. Omg when she twirls with her umbrella, the angle of the camera 😍😍 I'm not a Chinese film buff, but I'm just saying that that was my first impression when I started watching yesterday. It's a pity it's not more well-known. Kudos to the team and to the person who had the artistic eye. And the ED of the drama OMG I LOVE IT. IV HAVE IT PLAYING ON A LOOP.
Female lead is gorgeous IMO. She gives me a Prettier version of Chiaki Kuriyama. I always stare at her pretty eyes (No wonder hero is so smitten). Therefore she is very convincing as a capable assassin and fighter without losing feminity and allure. I like how she is not scared of expressing jealousy towards hero at some instances and how she loves fashion and nice dresses/jewels. Tim Yu is well casted as the hero because of his background. Timmy aint the typical flower boy beauty. He is not the traditional handsome type (even he got a nice smile and nice high cheekbones). Therefore he is perfect to represents the character dichotomy: a very polite gentleman and a harmless detective with a dormant beast in the eyes. The ending revelation did not surprise me too much cause at several instances I was catching something not so "innocent" in his eyes. And his expression and line when he woke up in the bathtub stressed the idea in my head.
I demand a SECOND SEASON !!! Drama is flawed. Ok but maaannn after such a long time I can at least get a cdrama where I care for the female lead ! Yeah !! I also care for the male lead and the supporting characters ! Yeah !! plus this drama got Joy of Life aka best drama of 2019's OST ! yeah ! This is predictable but still decently done and for such a low budget work the cinematography is great ! Yeah ! Thank you Avenue X for introducing me to the drama 🙏. Now I demand a second SEASON !
I wonder if someone who work for Joy of life work in this drama too. It is sometimes reminds me of Joy of life. Then i also hear the same music that used in Joy of life too in this drama. I REALLY want the second season. I want to see how they gonna unfold his identity and how his friends going to accept that. Is he gonna stay good or turn back to what he used to be. Aarrrrgggg so many things that i want to see. The cliffhanger also reminds me of Joy of life cliffhanger ending 😂
Really underrated drama series. It is one of the few drama series from 2020 that I actually finished watching. There's enough of a cliffhanger at the end of each episode to keep me going to the next. And it left me greatly thirsting for Season 2 (praying hard there would be one; I need to know the whole story behind the mystery massacre 8 years ago!!!!). Although the small cases are not superb but they do enough of a job to keep me interested. Of course, it helps that all these cases are related to the main mystery that the male lead is trying to unravel. It is also a plus that the series has only 24 episodes and the pace is decent without much fillers (compared to many other dramas). Most of the characters are interesting or of significance to the overall plot.
I honestly had no idea it was a web drama! Like you said, the cinematography was so lovely I thought it was a fully funded drama to be broadcast on the big screen. I actually enjoyed the mysteries and I really love wuxia, so I'm glad there was something working off original source material that worked very well! I loved the supporting characters. I actually went to look up Huang Ri Ying's dramas after watching this. Sima Dang was also an unexpectedly loveable character. The final reveal was incredible... It makes you wonder so many what ifs, what is going to happen. It's a real pity if no one picks up this drama in China... I think it was wonderfully done and would love to meet the characters again in Season 2.
Yo finally! I love this series so much. Became part of my top 5 favorites of all time easily. Even though so many things about it are average and okay, there’s just something charming about the series. Compared to so many other, higher budget Wuxia esq shows that came out 2019-2020 so far, although slow paced, made me enjoy every second of it. I know It will probably stay rather hidden, but who knows. If season 2 happens, I’ll be more than ecstatic.
I started watching this with no expectations thinking I would drop it after the first 4 episodes.( the amount of dramas in that list) but I was pleasantly surprised I wanted to see more. 1. This is a beautiful drama I didn't know it was a web drama the production value is just superb. 2. The characters I'd have to agree in the beginning they seamed like your typical 2 dimensional characters but how they grow and you get more personality. They are a breath of fresh air. 3. The character dynamics, wow. The romance btn the male and female leads was nicely done. It wasn't forced from the get go it was a really pleasurable slow burn. The bromance was very endearing. This need more recognition, It was a gem for me. Usually big productions or big names don't make me finish a drama its how the drama makes me engaged. And this really engaged me. Saying that there might not be a season two just shows how underated this drama is. Praying something happens so that it blows up. I season 2 is badly needed.
I would add a beautiful cold but layered pretty heroine that never lets rigidity stopping her from expressing love for the hero. No 2nd lead syndrome here I simply cheer for the OTP. I like Mr Ye, Mohan and Jian brotherhood. Wanted to add the "most handsome" writer boy here too.😁 but he is more of a recurrent character as the doctor girl that likes Jian. And good fighting scenes ! I demand season 2 !
I've just finished watching it. I have to say that I watched it after your review and the other video about the scriptwriter. I was of course influenced by your thoughts regarding its flaws. For example, I kept on cringing about the framing. Each time there was a shot where the head was cut, I would be like: "Ugh. AvenueX was right." It was just so awkward. I would have noticed it without you pointing it out, though. It's just that, I would have disregarded it. I'm not Chinese, so I rely on subtitles. But with this drama, I had to backtrack a lot because I kept on focusing on the images that I get distracted too much to actually read the subs. LOL. This drama was funny without the actors actually trying so hard to act and deliver fun lines. It just came naturally. (E.G. The part where Zhao Wo Huan had to pose so long because he had just defeated the assassin and Jian Bu Zhi had to remind him not to over do it. hahahaha) I loved all the characters too. I don't nitpick on things like framing, lighting and whatnots when I watch foreign dramas as I have to be mindful of the subs too much to actually notice things like that. But I did with this series because you pointed them out. The colors, the lights were amazing as you've said. They looked so natural and not faked like some dramas that I watch. Kudos to the team who made it. I hope there's a second season for this drama. I would love to see how the characters' stories develop. Especially if the production staff are the same minus that director. Thanks, AvenueX for pointing this drama in my direction. PS: I laughed so hard when I first saw the hopping corpse on episode 1. It reminded me of 1991 film "The Gods Must Be Crazy 3: Crazy Safari. LOL.
If The Untamed's visual production teams were like this Ancient Detective's visual production teams, The Untamed would be greater Cdrama. Everytime I see The Untamed, I'd like to cry...🥺☺️😅...Great storylines, nice & perfect chemistry from MLs' acting...yet quite poor in visual productions. Esp it's 21st century. They even can do better than that.
Watching this drama with a playback speed of 1.25× helps ❤ I tried watching this a year agovand stopped in the middle cuz it felt draggy, but now that i tried it thia way it was surprisingly enjoyable 😂. Hope it helps someone

I started watching Ancient Detective with much expectations. I kept watching because of the interactions between the two main leads. I first thought it was based on a BL. I ended binge watching in a weekend. But I fell in love with the characters, lighting, color schemes, cheeky comedy, cinematography and fight scenes.
I just finished the show after watching it over two days. I thought the "detective" and "mystery" component of the series was the weakest part of the series - formulaic and predictable. The most drawn out and silliest bit was the story line with the ill rich man and all the physicians in the hotel. I appreciate that all these mystery story lines are necessary to introduce new characters but that particular story line was tedious. I actually enjoyed the underlying plot (lead's quest to discover more about his father's death and his father's murderer). I wish they had focused more on this. The ending left me really impressed and shocked. I did not expect to see the unmasking of Wang Hua and to discover his identity. I hope they make a second season that focuses on this plot. Also, the way they ended it made it seem like there is potential for another new "evil" character to enter the fold.

I think this show has got to me one of my favourites of 2020 already. Agree that the cases are a bit meh 🤣 but thought the acting was really quite good. I thought the Zhao Wo Huan character was hilarious and quite nice to look like 🥰
I love this drama. I was captivated right away by how it simultaneously brought something fresh to the wuxia genre but also reminded me so much of the better wuxias back in my heyday. It just gave me that nostalgic wuxia feeling again with the clans and the gaoshous that show up. The male leads is such BroTP and the assassin girl manages to bring life to her restrained character without being wooden. We’ve got some major talent in this one and I’m sad to see it go under the radar!
I started watching Ancient Detective on a whim and got hooked pretty quickly on (I haven't finished yet). I've fallen in love with Wuxia ever since I got into Word of Honor (big surprise) and detective fiction is a long-time favourite genre of mine so finding a drama with both at once is like the icing on the cake. It is rather slow and I agree they could have offered more complex, more intricate cases but they're still good enough to grab my attention. And I'm quite curious about the ending - I do have a theory that I have since the pilot and I can't wait to see whether I'm right... which makes me a bit sad that we might never get a second season because talk about a twist! Anyway, I'll see. I was quite taken with the quality of the Ancient Detective; some of the scenes are so beautiful! Same thing with the outfits which all good pretty good quality. It adds some layers to the storytelling, I feel. As for the characters, I also find them all very interesting (I might have been interested in them earlier than you did, though) and also very likeable, I do care about them all, which makes the experience even more engaging, obviously. Anyway, to answer your question, I'm quite a fan of Ancient Detective and wish it had gotten people's interest. I feel like it deserves more traction... life is hard for cdramas :/
I just finished the first season of Ancient Detective,. First a good and concise review. On my side I have been watching many Chinese dramas the last few months. On this one I agree a slow burn to fully developed character development, not necessarily bad for it is like a long novel that revelation comes the deeper you go. Instead of letting everything out right off the bat. Actors are developing through out the episodes. Timing was mostly good. The team should go forward and people will enjoy the continuation of the story and of the production . Just a quick thumbs up from an Expat in the Philippines.
I loved this show so much. Thank you so much for reviewing it. I actually really liked the male lead from the beginning, they styled him really nicely and I found him very good looking. I also love his slow burn romance with the female lead. The bromance was great with 2nd male lead and the cases were reasonably interesting. What i loved most was the character engagements and the lead up to the ending twist! I really really hope that there will be a second season.
This ! I personnally think it is the best cdrama of 2020 so far. I mean it is the only cdrama airing now where I never feel the need to slap the heroine. I cheer for the OTP and the respect they have for each other. The characters got a nice chemistry and I like how hero has built his own team with Mo Han 1st, then the beautiful fierce Zhan si qi and the charming capable Mr Ye. I like the camaraderie and the dialogue btw all of the characters. I love the "Joy Of Life" ost used here 😁 (a huge bonus!). I like the fighting scenes and the wuxia elements of that nice show as well. I personally think hero might have regain his memory tho (look at his word in the bath tub). I demand 2nd season

I know this drama has its problems but I just LOVE it! It’s been a year and I still remember these characters when watching this review video. Hope more people can see it. I totally agree the camera work is so good.
Just finished this drama yesterday and I really hope a second season is made. It was a pretty easy and sweet watch. As you said just flow with the story. Nothing really complicated but it was still a good watch. And I really liked the side characters as well. It was a good cast. I didn't went into it having any high expectations but came out quite happy with the result. Yes the script definitely could have been better but what they gave was no bad either.
I’m at episode 7 and thinking of dropping this drama. You were right, the biggest problem is the uninteresting mystery cases and male lead. I somehow felt that they miscast the male lead because he doesn’t have that smart vibe. Not everyone can pull off playing genius. But after watching this review maybe I should continue, since it’s not too long.
Just finished watching the series and I really enjoyed it!! 🥰 The drama had a slow start but won me over gradually. I really hope the 2nd season happens soon. The visuals were amazing 😍and the background music was beautiful and went well with all the scenes 🤩 BTW - the 1st ML's side profile kinda reminded me of Bai Yu... mainly due to his chin... and I was reminded of the mango meme... 😂
Just finished the drama. It didn't really get to me until ~Ep10, but does get better later on. Especially the last couple of episodes when all the supporting roles got together, I love Dr Ye & 黑雾娘娘, 小妖女&司马当, I think their acting is much better than some of the leading roles >_< Overall, the drama is more towards WuXia and not so much on solving cases - honestly, you could tell the final plot from pretty early on. The style of drama is more like the ones 10-15 yrs ago, it's soooo rare in today's world. Definitely much better visual effect comparing with other recent dramas, some of the shots were so beautifully done and can be used as wallpaper. The ending song is really good even though it was not from those high profile singers (like Zhou Shen, lol).
I'm in the middle of the series and I'm really enjoying it. The first episodes made me not only fall in love with the characters, but also with the mystery part of the action. It reminded me a lot of the books by Agatha Christie that I really like and the way she builds the story up until the moment the killer is revealed. I just thought that some of the cases investigated by the protagonist could have been shorter (at least in my opinion), as they greatly slowed down the narration and led me to lose my initial interest a little. But I'm curious to see the rest and follow the characters' psychological progress and the way they change and interact with each other. Thank you so much for your review!
“Because theres only one person doing this channel and I only have that many hours” now... that had me thinking hmmm it’s 20 odd episodes long so maybe Avenue X hasn’t got round to seeing it all or fast forwarded through chunks... understandable.... then the bomb shell “I binge watched the whole thing” had me like 😳 blink ... blink..... 😳....... 😳 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 meanwhile it’s taken me a few weeks 🤔 probably more like 3 to watch most of Day & Night which I love by the way 😁 so, doffs cap to you for the binge watching willpower 👊🏻
i felt like the aesthetics/setting gives me a vibe of the dramas in the early 2000s, but a modern take of it. The main character's acting reminds me of how people those days acted. i don't know if i'm making sense haha. I really like the second male lead and I felt like the female lead was pretty good at doing stunts

Agreed with the colour saturations, sets, lighting, songs, cinematography, built up characters, reminds me of another low budget drama "Bloody Romance" that until now still impressed me a lot.. Ancient detective is the first Cdrama I’ve ever seen and I loved it so much . I agree with your point of vue . But WHERE is the end😢 ??? We are told that there are two last episodes for this unique season , do you know how to get them ?
You are right it is a slow burn but more addictive because it makes one want to know more. It is unique in an unoriginal way which makes it so special.
Recently a lot of the dramas I have watched is all split into seasons..... Joy of Life, Hospital Playlist and now Ancient Detective. Yeah, I really like this one. The character dynamics is really great and the action scenes is done well despite the lack of budget.
I hadn't thought to watch this drama, but - it's beautifully/aesthetically filmed? Has natural looking light? OMG, I'm a sucker for those! It's a feast for eyes!!!! And the music is also fittingly used? I'm a goner. Also, I have no problems with slow burn, thus definitely gonna watch it now! :D
I really liked this drama, and would like to see a second season. I guess my taste in c-drama is undeveloped, but the unexpected beauty of some of the visuals here is worth a second watch, and the characters, though slow to develop as you said, are more interesting than most.

Thanks for recommending this show! I've binging it right now and it's pretty decent! I actually think the mysteries are better than the My Roommate is a Detective mysteries - they're more complex and take longer to resolve as well. My only complaint is that the second mystery on the Kui Lei island was a bit of a let down - so much build up and the story and the reveal both ended up being meh.
I do like this drama when I was watching it. While the cases are not phenomenal, it still catches my attention and holds it. The characters grew on me and I am interested to find out especially behind the main character’s background story. I hope they can make a second season especially with the way they hint of a second season.

Detective stories are always a bait for me, especially when they are combined with historical or fantasy settings, so I was thinking of checking out this drama when it popped up in my field somewhere. After your review my mind is set, especially since the show is relatively short at 24 episodes. Speaking of Gu Long, did you get to watch Handsome Siblings and if so what are you thoughts on it? I had finished a fan translation of Bordertown Wanderer before watching Handsome Siblings and I thought they did a pretty good job capturing the feel of Gu Long's narrative style, at least in the story progression (sadly this is the only way I can assess things, as have absolutely no knowledge of chinese adn thus no way of knowing the original language)
Christina Chrysogonou i haven't read that work before watching the 2020 version but i was convinced that it was closer to the original work... mostly because it was way more cliche but endearing than the other two versions i have seen.
@@RoseNZieg yes that's what I thought too. I haven't watched previous versions but tried watching the Zhu Yilong version of Border town Wanderer and handsome siblings felt to me far closer to the structure of the author's storytelling

After listening to your comments and observations, I feel compelled to rewatch this series and focus on the aesthetics instead of the subtitles. Do you know where I might find a list of the full cast? I tried googling for it, but none of the results give a complete list. I want to find out who plays some of the minor characters in the later episodes. Some of the actors play multiple characters, right? Or am I just imagining things?

I actually love this drama, especially the music and the esthetics. Having to read subtitles I focus more on the sounds of what is going on. That is because I might be doing something else so plan on watching it again. Since I haven't found a lot of dramas I like, I just watch the same few over and over. Like Imperial Coroner, Detective L, Qing Qing, love Guardian, sometimes Once Were Married. I'm new to all this so not too much experience even looking for ones to like with subtitles. Not a fan of women crying and fighting over men. Especially screaming so-and-so's name over and over when they are hurt. I wish there was a chart to fill in which I could tick which boxes I like. Save me a bunch of time, so what you do is brilliant in helping in my search!! Thank you so much!!
Honestly, I was not a fan of the length of each case and the way the drama transitions immediately to the next case without any breathing room (and the cases itself aren't that great), which made it exhausting for binging purposes. However, I couldn't stop watching because the cinematography of it was amazing and the soundtrack/sound editing is also brilliant. I'm also personally a fan of the murderer in a group of individuals, each with a secret, Agatha Christie type mystery that was the set up for every case. The characters do become more interesting as it goes on (although I found it hilarious that every character here fell in love quicker than a disney princess). It's shot as a slow paced suspense old mystery movie and the low lighting is just so soothing and blends so well with the bgm that it's the kind of drama I (usually a binge watcher), watched arc by arc or just an episode at a time with a cup of tea in bed. For some people it might be kind of scary at night, but for me it was the perfect comfy, relaxing "before sleep" drama.
I had to pause at episode 3 to come and watch your review to see if it’s worth continuing...after watching your assessment, I most definitely will ! 😇🙏🏻

I would love to see a second season, because I want to know, how the story between Zhao Wo Huan and Ming Yue , the handsome warrior (who could be a twin of Xiao Zhan) and the fairy, is developing. She refused to give him back his bracelet, so... So many dramas I want to watch... I am very thankful to AvenueX guiding me wisely through the universe of chinese productions. I would love to understand the original language, some words I have already learned, although I don't know how useful the vocabulary from period dramas could be in modern times, but that doesn't bother me... :-D
I've done watching it... I really loved the drama.... Technically everything you mentioned I loved... rare a rare piece of work I would say... I wish more and these kinds could come out more.. Everything was beautifully placed and came across later... Bcz I watch and read a lot of detective work some of it I did get bfr revelation.. But it did surprise me quite a few times.. It's one of the few shows that I didn't skip scenes.. I usually don't do that.... Whoever was in charge... And the whole team did genius and magnificent work...

I really like this drama, bcoz it gave a good explanation in the end and detailing of every character in the end is good ,tho the starting is a lil bit slow,and I'll be waiting for the second season
I haven't watched a lot of cdramas, but as someone who's sort of watched cdramas mostly for the cool wuxia elements, this is the first one that truly drew me in in terms of storytelling and character development I'd say. I stumbled upon it by chance and clicked because it was sort of short, but as someone who's dabbled in filmography- I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about the aesthetics of the drama. That sort of lighting and the angles are very difficult to nail unless you have an eye for it or are very experienced, and the vibe that it created was one of the main reasons I watched this! I agree in that most of the characters seem "standard" or "regular" at first, but the storytelling as it dove deeper into the different facets of the characters and how they didn't remain static really drew me in and I found myself binge watching despite the slow pace that it set at the beginning. For me, it was a hidden gem and it left me wanting more, and wanting to watch it again. I was taken by complete surprise when I heard it was a web drama, and while I know realistically there wouldn't be a second season, I find myself just hoping so much for more! I adored the whole cast, which was rare, and I want to see how every single character is developed further! Also, I love the bromance so much between Jian Bu zhi and zhao wo huan!!
I watched before seeing your review and agree that the beauty of the shots drew me in more than the story. I did like how the other numerous characters were each unique and I wanted to know more about their stories.
Love your reviews, as always! I watched about 3 minutes of your review a few weeks ago and then stopped so that I could go binge this drama. I mean...24 episodes is a drop in the bucket compared to other dramas (I just finished Princess Agents...don't get me started) and that alone was enough to convince me to give it a chance. Now I'm back to finish watching your review and I agree with everything you said. I just loved the cinematography, and the overall visual appeal of Ancient Detective is really in a new league. I wish I could say it's setting a new bar for Chinese dramas in general but as you said, unlikely. I marvel at how little it takes to appease Chinese drama consumers. There are just so many badly filmed, badly scripted, badly acted, etc dramas that get all the attention! Here's hoping for season 2!
I really enjoyed this drama. It’s one of 2 dramas I’m chasing ....the other being “The Legend of Awakening.” I really hope there will be a second season. Otherwise, is there a novel (translated in English) I can read. I really want to know what’s going to happen. The last time I chased a story this much was Harry Potter.

Just finished it today. My god, that final revelation although I’ve had my wild guesses at the beginning of the series. Need a season 2 ASAP. Haven’t felt like this since Princess agents’ finale.
I have it for awhile on watchlist of Viki, now will surely will watch it . Will try to combine it with "Legend of Awakening" , that I'm loving it. Thank you for the great reviews ♥️
