Ancient Ink Reborn: Revitalizing Traditional Inuit Tattooing

Great Big Story

For thousands of years, Inuit people have marked themselves with tattoos. While designs and meanings vary, tattoos remain a vital part of the culture. But a century ago, the tradition was nearly lost when missionaries came to Inuit communities and began colonizing. Now, artist Marjorie Tahbone is intent on reawakening this ancient art using the traditional techniques of her native people.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

as somebody living in Canada I think it is extremely important to acknowledge that part of our history. Things have been done and can't be undone, but the way people think about First Natives and the rights we give them, can change. It's great to see how this helps reviving these ancient cultures and how it helps this woman identify with her heritage!

Wow ❤️ such beauty. I'm a 15 year old Inuk from Iqaluit Nunavut, and have been thinking of getting traditional tattoos for a while now. Seeing this video makes me so happy and extremely proud of my culture. All these years that have taken away our culture, and all the pain we have felt as a community by residential schools is a lot to think about. Even I, one of the youngest generations feel the pain of it but to have these tattoos come back and not be a taboo anymore is so amazing. I'm in tears just thinking about my future tattoos and how much they are going to mean to me. Not only because they will be forever on my skin but they will be a permanent symbol that I a Inuk woman am strong. That I'm still here, my people are still here and we are very proud of your culture. That never again will we let anyone tell us we are wrong or that our culture is not right. I'm very excited to be getting my tattoos. Thank you for this beautiful video ❤️❤️

Maori Woman in Aotearoa (New Zealand) has also experienced a similar situation. Ta moko (pronounced as Tar more core} declining as an art form during the 20th century, now in recent decades there has been a revival. Each moko contains ancestral tribal messages specific to the wearer. These messages tell the story of the wearer's family and tribal affiliations, and their place in these social structures. A moko’s message also portrays the wearer’s genealogy, knowledge and social standing. Replanting Ancient Traditions

a tattoo is a tattoo is a tattoo. so lets just freely sin. I feel sorry for future generations. its sad. tribalism is a form of paganism. like my people of Papua New guinea. face tattoos is also a thing, scarification, blood letting, cutting into flesh to look like a crocodile, eating of enemies flesh. I'm a saved Christ follower. I follow the Lord. I'm not about to go back to my roots. in fact in some places,if my island, a pastor has to keep preaching the word, he needs to keep leading his people to the Lord, otherwise future generations may forget, and go right back to the killing, cutting, and tattoong. missionaries really did help parts of my island. I wish more missionaries would go there again and remind the people. otherwise you fall.

The word Pagan literally means tribal folk of or perhaps more accurately local. It is rooted in the old Latin word Pagus (pah'- Guus) which can be roughly translated to country or something akin to city-state. You are misusing the word. Christian Latin and Germanic influence likened the word to heathen which is the word you mean. Christians did not understand colloquial Latin and a number of words in Latin have been bastardized because of this much the same way Catholicism changed Irish Gaelic and convinced people the PAGAN (see local) religion of the Celtic (see Kealtic) tribes were animalistic, barbaric and murderous. When most were largely more peaceful than Judeo-Christian and other Abrahamic faiths. This is not a slight on said faiths as I am apart of one. I'm simply making a plea for you to do a little history study outside your comfort zone. Especially if you are from say... The Cook islands where 'Christians' did very little good and vast amounts of harm. Fun fact. The word Barbarian is also hokum. Look it up, it will make you laugh. Also, Christ may or may not have been against Tattoos depending on translations and definition of defiling of one's temple. Remember that to Hebrew peoples and Muslims that means things like eating pork or shellfish and drinking alcohol. Or even in some stricter denominations, wearing denim, and silk. Or... Polyester which literally means Many (Poly) compounds (sic)- probably from ancient Germanic for acid) that sounds like mixed fabric to me. Just try to be nice and not judge others and their faiths. It is not for us to judge but to love unconditionally. Hot coals and all that right? ✌🖖
