Ancient Tibetan Singing Bowls Part 1, Himalayan bowls Bill Cael
Tibetan singing bowls originated in the Himalayan region thousands of years ago, and were used in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and Mongolia; thus they are also known as Himalayan bowls. Although some historians speculate that the bowls were brought to Tibet along with Buddhism in the 8th century, others believe they originated in northeastern and eastern Tibet much earlier and were used in the shamanic rituals of the pre-Buddhist, animistic Bon Po religion that was practiced in the area.
Today, Tibetan singing bowls are used for a variety of purposes-to enhance healing and shamanic states, deepen meditation practice, facilitate shamanic journeying, clear negative energies from ritual space, and simply promote relaxation. Depending on how each individual bowl is played-whether rubbed with a stick, gently tapped, or struck more forcefully-it will exhibit different tonal qualities and help achieve different results.
