Dr. Harold Jaffe (Charles Martin Smith): Every blood bank in the country has known for some time that some of the blood that it has been using for transfusions is contaminated. We've been unable to get them to start any testing or take any precautions whatsoever.

blood bank executive #1: We've had extensive discussions on the subject and as of May 1st, Irwin Memorial will begin testing for antibodies to the core of the Hepatitis B virus.
Dr. Dennis Donohue (Ken Jenkins): Good. Good! This is the test we've been urging you for a year to use, until a better test comes along.
Red Cross spokesperson (Jill Andre): Not good! That test is not totally effective, and you're forcing the Red Cross to start using it too. We can't compete!
blood bank executive #2: Absolutely. We are not convinced that it is transmitted by transfusions at all!
Dr. Dennis Donohue (Ken Jenkins): Well, what does it take to convince you? The CDC confirmed that the number of transfusion cases has quadrupled over the past eight months.
blood bank executive #3: You know you can't prove that.
Dr. Dennis Donohue (Ken Jenkins): Technically you're right, but 89% of severe hemophiliacs, the ones that got the most transfusions, have become infected. 89%! I find it very hard to equate these figures with a possible loss of revenue.
blood bank executive #4: I make a motion that FDA regulations require that Hepatitis B test be used to screen all blood and blood products before they're used on patients.
blood bank executive #5: Second. [pause] In favor? [pause] Opposed? [pause] Motion not carried.
Dr. Dennis Donohue (Ken Jenkins): Let me ask you this: When doctors start acting like businessmen, who can the people turn to for doctors?
